Absolutely love this place! Anytime i'm in the mood for "just like home fried seafood", this is my spot! The food is always hot and fresh, made to order. The portions are just right as well as the seasonings. The staff is always friendly. I've gone here multiple times alone, and feel right at home. This is a true Houston jewel. Worst dinning experience I have ever had. Waited 45 minutes for my appetizers. Never came out so we asked for the check. When we were paying the appetizers came out and the man serving us proceeded to eat our appetizer and then shared some with his friend who was sitting at the bar. I was shocked!!!! I wasn't sure what to think of this place when I first saw the building when I pulled into the parking lot. I thought to myself, "A boat - really?". I came in though and was welcomed by the warmest smiling staff. When we sat down to order, the waitress immediately pointed us towards the thursday special - whole catfish with shrimp, fries, and hushpuppies for $13. Needless to say, my friend and I immediately jumped on that without hesitation. Also got an order of calamari to split. If you haven't been to this place, a forewarning - be prepared to leave completely stuffed with fried goodness. The calamari was good, though the crisp wasn't what I'm used to. It's a little crisper than most calamari places. It does have a great bit of spice though. The rest of it was plentiful and good, but not fantastic. I've had better. Catfish was a bit oily, and the shrimp batter/fry was slightly off. Some of it kind of crumbled apart instead of sticking to the shrimp. Still it was a good meal at a good price, and I'd gladly come back. Fried seafood? That's a winning combination right there. read more

This is a pretty good seafood place. It's not too expensive. The gulf oysters are so fresh, the gumbo was so good my daughter stole my bowl away), and the fried shrimp were just right. We had an excellent experience at Capt. Benny's. We are visiting Houston for a Drs Appointment for our son. We had two adults and a five year old. Seating was sparse but we didn't mind. I understood it was a small place and it was evening rush. Our server was everything you would want in a great server. The lady who was serving a huge group next to us was great too. We ordered raw oysters, twice, baked oysters, stuffed shrimp, fried alligator,popcorn shrimp for our son. Everything was fantastic. The raw oysters stole the show, though. Beer stayed filled up. The food is miles apart from the fried seafood,gumbo,Cajun stuff in Louisiana. I looked the place up and thought I had pick up some for my parents... But the food is just NOT good and they charge a hefty amount for the stuff they serve. The 13.99 crawfish Ettoffe was full of hot green peppers and hardly and "crawfish". (I had one just last week in Baton Rouge for 9 bucks and some change for a container that's 3 times the size with authentic flavor) The seasoning for the gumbo is just wrong. The piece of fish I got in my capt platter was tiny. I had to tell my parents... This does not represent cajun/southern seafood what so ever. I will have to take you guys to get some real stuff after this disaster. Oh wait did I mention some items they charge you a different amount for take out than sit in? There has been a change in staff. Today made the second visit that I noticed a change in the foods taste along with the staff. If the food isn't the same great flavor that it used to be, I see no reason to go back‍ I will probably try one more time just to make sure I didn't catch them on two off days. Called in for an order of boudin balls, order was ready in 15 mins. Each time I've been here the food is always good. The service is quick and the staff are friendly. After three dozen oysters last week, Benny's were the best. And that was compared to a popular baton Rouge place and an even more popular metarie restaurant. Fresh, bright, served on ice, cold, with a good set up of horse radish. Also shells were very clean. The eutofee was excellent also. What a rare find Captain Benny's is! This diner-style eatery is a hole in the wall that was unexpectedly tasty and FRESH. My meal began with a spicy michelada style Corona served in a cold mug followed by a dozen very plump, succulent Gulf oysters on the half shell served with lemon wedges, cocktail and horseradish sauce, and saltines. My oysters were shucked right before my eyes. I then enjoyed a half dozen broiled parmesan oysters, which were cooked to perfection, served on a bed of rock salt. This tapas style meal concluded with an order of crab fingers perfectly broiled, garlic toast, and sweet potato fries. Everything was delicious, and the wait staff was attentive. This is not a fine dining environment, but it certainly delivered on quality, freshness, flavor, and whimsy. Thumbs up! read more

I don't understand one reviewer's comment that this isn't as popular as Captain Tom. Captain Benny's has only been a Houston institution since 1969. Oh well, to each his or, as in the reviewer, her own. I pretty much love Captain Benny's. They made me fall in love with fried oysters when I was a kid. It took me a while to love taking the risk in eating raw oysters years later. ;-) Nowadays, I'm banned via my dietitian in eating the deep fried stuff. Although, I have to admit that I do sneak a couple of bites. If y'all know my dietitian, don't tell her. ;-) Anyway, I now order the broiled seafood platter. It's "the alternative for fried everything," as it says on the menu. It consists of a fish filet, !/2 shrimp skewer, 1/2 scallop skewer, shrimp seasoned rice, coleslaw and garlic toast. And, it's totally yummy! If you want your food to-go, online ordering is available. It's run by Living Social and it's very easy. As for this location, I don't think it would have mattered whether you ordered online or in person because you would have to wait a while to receive it anyway. So heed the old saying that patience is a virtue. Seating is limited both inside and outside. Parking is limited, too. You can probably take the risk of parking next door at the Target and walking. The staff is friendly, courteous and very understanding. Especially with the lunch time crowd. I don't have a bad thing to say about them. I'll always will go back to this place. I think when I have a day off, I'll take time to experience the oysters. read more

I was advised this place had good seafood by our hotel, so I decided to try it out. Being from Florida, we love seafood. This place wasn't very good, and we left disappointed. The fried catfish wasn't like catfish I'm used to. It seemed like a low quality fish. If you go here, I would think their fried shrimp or oysters are your best option. I wouldn't stray far from that. The broiled platter was mediocre. The fish on the broiled platter didn't taste great. The seafood rice was decent. Supposedly they won't let you substitute your sides if you order a fried plate, and don't want to eat only fried food. We won't be returning. The seafood gumbo at Captain Benny's wasn't bad though. read more

Went here after the Texans game was over! Was craving seafood and saw that this restaurant was close by and so excited to eat some good food. Unfortunately, I never had an opportunity to eat because a hour passed by and I never received my food. The waitress that waited on us made eye contact with me and gave me a smirk and left the restaurant because her shift was over. My wife and I have been coming to this location for s couple years now. The food is always great with the best gumbo around. But recently they've added new faces to the waiting staff and the waitress ignored my wife completely, attended to me exclusively even though she was the one paying. It really incensed her and made the experience bittersweet. Capt Benny's is honestly one of my favorite causal seafood restaurants. We decided to go with this location since it's closer to home than the regular one we go to, it was a horrible decision. The restaurant is pretty small but they do have 6ft sitting distance. There was little to no greeting we didn't know if we could sit anywhere we like or have someone seat us. It took them 15 to 20 min to get our order even when there wasn't a lot of people. While waiting for the food , I could see employees without any energy attending to customers. Seems like the manager and two employees were having trouble with a ticket. The waitress was non attentive at all!! The dishes were not removed when done, people kept waiting a long time for their orders. Food was okay, some of my boiled shrimp were over cooked and given hot, which usually they are given over ice. Appetizers arrived at the same time with our plate, it was okay just Never again coming to this location. read more

Maybe we went on a bad night but dinner at Captain Benny's was disappointing. They were very busy due to the rodeo crowd but it could hv been better managed if they were more organized. Nobody at the front to greet you and show you where to sit and when the 2 of us found a table after some patrons left, a waitstaff said we couldn't sit there cos it was a table for 4. All the while she was shouting to the customers walking in not to come in cos the place was full. Very chaotic. To be fair when we finally sat down, our server was very nice but told us the food will take 45min since they were very busy. It didn't take 45min more like 30min but the Raw Oysters appetizer came out after we were done with our Broiled Seafood Platter. The fish was fresh but the shrimp and scallops were rubbery. I like how the food is not overly salted. The sides of shrimp rice and coleslaw were good. The Raw Oysters were smaller than expected and we didn't like the fact they rang up to be $11.99/doz instead of the quoted price of $10.99. It was a messy establishment and the place had a weird smell, smells kinda like bad breath. Def won't be going back. read more
