Wow! Awesome local find! This place doesn't really look like much on the outside (or the inside for that matter, haha) but what they offer is something really genuine and delicious. I went on a Monday and had the red beans and rice lunch special - just awesome flavor and for $7.50 you get a huge serving, a big sausage piece, and tasty cornbread. I'm really looking forward to trying more things and the poboys looked really popular too. Looks like they have breakfast as well - some standard fare. Anyhow, this is a West Bank gem and a solid choice for a quick lunch on the go.

Man, sandwiches were awesome. On point. Any of the po boys are a winner, but please do give the sausage one a try.

Good breakfast sandwich's. Ham, egg, and cheese on bun dressed. Don't let this hole in the wall fool you.

Let me tell you something. We just finished a swamp tour in the Louisiana bayou -- gators, cypress…read moretrees, Spanish moss, the whole magnificent thing -- and we were hungry, a little wild-eyed, and in desperate need of a meal worthy of the morning we just had. Restaurant des Familles delivered in every single way. We ordered the crab cakes, the turtle soup, and the étouffée, and I am not being dramatic when I say all three were absolutely out of this world. The crab cakes were perfect -- crispy outside, sweet and fresh inside, no filler, no shortcuts. The turtle soup was rich and deeply seasoned in that only-in-Louisiana way that makes you close your eyes on the first spoonful. And the étouffée? Silky, buttery, loaded with flavor. Every single dish tasted like someone's grandmother made it with love and a lifetime of knowing exactly what she was doing. But beyond the food -- this place is just beautiful. Tucked right into the bayou, quiet and unhurried, with that warm Louisiana hospitality that makes you feel like a welcome guest rather than a table to turn. We walked in as road-tripping strangers and left feeling like we'd found one of the best kept secrets in the whole state. If you are anywhere near Barataria, whether you just came off a swamp tour or you made the drive specifically for this -- stop here. You will not regret a single bite. Restaurant des Familles is the real deal.

Racism Alive At This Location: Worth Reading and Please Share…read more At 56 years old, and the mother of 2 bi racial children, and nine bi racial grandchildren, writing this review brought me to tears. Not because my family has not endured lots of racial issues with challenges, and lots of hate, but because 30 years later it still exists. We are locals and have been coming to Jean Lafitte our entire lives. We were in fact looking to move here but after Katrina decided to visit regularly instead and charter guides when affordable. We have several friends here and have posted great reviews for many other places and people. Perhaps this was indeed an isolated issue, but it is one I am not willing to let go. In fact I was told by the harbor that telling the office of the mayor here would do no good. That alone tells me there is an issue. So by now your asking what happened so here goes the short version. We wanted boiled crawfish and had been told this restaurant had good reviews and not to judge the book by the cover. They said it was an old family business, that looked like it. They were correct as it looks like a shack in the swamp. We called and the lady told my daughter Monica that yes they had them. Monica was given a price and told they only took cash. Monica said ok we will take 10 pounds and placed the order, got directions, and the cash. Then Monica loaded all the children and babies in the van and drove to pick up our dinner. We were excited and ready to share our meal during family time. Monica arrived at the restaurants and said OMG this place looks like a real shack. Regardless I've taught our children to embrace life and use your best judgment. Once there Monica went inside and said she was treated with such a rudeness that it made her skin crawl. Monica said the older white lady looked her up and down and said we're almost closed. Monica said I placed the order for the 10 pounds of crawfish fifteen minutes ago and by the way your directions were great. Then after continuing to look at my daughter with what she says was pure hate, the lady said Oh your Monica , well hum, I already sold the crawfish. Monica said but you told me to come and I placed the order specifically telling you I was on my way. Well I sold them and that's that. Monica said mom I wanted to cry because this caught me so off guard. Instead I said thank you and have a good day, to which I got no response and we left. Monica called me and I immediately called Higgins and stated I wanted to place an order for 10 pounds of crawfish and could be there in ten minutes. I acted like a local and was told and I quote, Oh yeah come now as I just had an order cancel. I WAS FURIOUS! As a business owner it is your right to refuse service to customers but what does this Racism say for a town that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourist every year. I am hurt for my daughter who is soft spoken and has a heart the size of our universe. This type of racial injustice is just why we protest and speak our peace. When will this type of cruelty stop? When will our children and there children's children be able to walk in an establishment, and be judged for them and not the color of there skin. So to tell you if the food at this location was good or not, I can not tell you and never will. People of color bring your business elsewhere. In fact not a few miles up the road with no advanced order, Monica walked into Boutte Restaurant and had a totally different experience. The crawfish and potatoes were EXCELLENT and the Customer Service was even BETTER!

All the dishes were flavorful and delicious. The only issue that I had was there were only 2 people working in the entire restaurant and we waited for a while for our food to come out. We were only 1 of 2 customers in their restaurant. This reminded me of my parents when they ran their restaurant by themselves, but they were a lot faster. I also got charged for a Combination Pho when I only got steak and brisket. The guy who was the cashier/cook/waiter, apologized and told me he forgot my meatballs, but still charged me a Combination. They didn't even have tendon or tripe, and when I asked, he said they give it by request. If that is the case, that is not a Combination Pho and I shouldn't have gotten charged for that. Pho broth was clean and made very well. My large didn't have that much rice noodles so I felt I got a little ripped off. My son had a medium and he had the same amount of noodles that I had. It more seemed to be if you want more broth vs the portions being bigger. Otherwise, the food was flavorful and delicious. If they can speed up their service and if someone ordered the Combination Pho and they actually gave them what they ordered, then I think this place would go places. The staff are friendly. Service is slow. They have a lot of tables to dine on. Their parking lot is super small, but it wasn't busy so I don't think you have that issue.

Could tell they might have been a bit busier than expected, because some of the tables still needed to be cleaned. With this in mind, service was still very good. Waitresses were tag teaming the tables, which I love to see - customers before egos. Drinks were brought quickly and never ran dry. Chips were good, though we added salt. Salsa was very good - flavorful and not burn your mouth - and when our cheese dip arrived, I was in love! :) I'm not a big cheese dip fan, but this white dip was just SO good. Husband got 3 shredded beef tacos ($2.50 ea) with usual toppings ($.35). They were nice size and tasty. I ordered the Louisiana Burrito ($10) and sides of rice and beans. The rice was good, the beans I could pass; just not the texture I like. Now the burrito...my husband saw it coming first, and I heard him say, "Oh my God." I didn't know what he was talking about, then I saw it. It was HUGE - literally as big as the plate. They warn it's a 12" burrito. I really, really enjoyed it, but I took 1/2 home. Even reheated, I couldn't finish it. (NOTE: If you reheat, remove the potatoes/french fries or add salsa - they dried out in the fridge.) Check out was quick. Did we like it? Yes. Did we return? Yes. Ordered take out later in the week with beef tacos again, cheese dip, and the pork tamale. Now this tamale I like! It didn't have the traditional corn husk exterior that tends to get soggy or dry. I don't know what it was made of, but it was totally worth the $3 a la carte price. My next trip I'm going to try the chicken tacos with pineapple. Yum!
