It's been a while since we ate here. I tagged it, but was upset with what we had and figured I'd give it some time to cool off. Well after looking back at it, I still remember it being terrible. First off the chowder was like mashed potatoes and the crab roll was nothing more than a lettuce sandwich. I had visited the website before going and the prices were reasonable. When we got there I didn't check the prices until after ordering.....it was twice what the website said. I definitely will not be trying this place again. read more

This place is amazing the crab cakes are wonderful and packed full of crab. The clam strips are also tender and tasty. We highly recommend this place to anyone traveling to Long Beach, Washington! Amazing smoked salmon chowder. (We recently tried with hot sauce-- game changer)! My husband and I make it tradition to stop at Bob's every time we're in town. This is 100% my favorite seafood restaurant in washington state. The two people( I assume are also the owners) are amazing! Super friendly as well. I had the crab roll with the bowl of Clam Chowder, and my wife has the fish sandwich with steak fries. The price is super affordable for the fantastic quality of food! It came out to $45 plus tip. The wait to order the food was about 15-20 min but it's worth every minute no doubt. The crab tasted fresh from the ocean. Non of that cheap crab imitation. I rate this 5 stars. Excellent lunch of chowder! After spending the early afternoon exploring Ilwaco, we stopped for a "light lunch" at Captain Bob's. We each got a bowl of chowder (16 oz) - one of clams and one of lobster. A bowl of this chowder is not a light lunch. I have never eaten that many clams in one sitting, in any form. Many spoonfuls were just soup and clams and the clams were large pieces that you needed to chew. I was in heaven. My wife had a similar experience with the lobster chowder. I like my chowder fairly salty so normally I will be adding it to the soup. not here. It was plenty salty already, so be sure to taste first, then add salt. read more

Really yummy! Just a small 2 person show run in a little place along the main drag. Nothing fancy, but the food was fresh and delicious. I had the clam chowder and a crab roll. The chowder was thick with potato and had a good amount of clams. The crab roll was lightly coated in mayo with celery and a sprinkle of old bay. Just simple and fresh how it should be. My only suggestion would be to provide a bigger garbage can and a clearly labeled spot to return trays. Yum! read more

We found this place on Yelp. It sounded very good. IT WAS! We had the crab roll and the clam chowder. The crab roll was absolutely stuffed with crab. The sandwich was more crab than bread. Every bite you could enjoy the crab. The clam chowder was awesome. It was very favorable, lots of clams, thick and rich. Service was very quick. The weather was great so we ate outside due to Covid. Had a cup of clam chowder and a crab roll. Both were great, and I lived in Boston for a time, so I know my chowda'! My husband had a fish sandwich with fries. Fries were just plain, boring fries, but the fried fish sandwich was a star. So many times fried fish is too oily. This fish was perfect - not oily at all, but with good flavor. Batter was also flavorful. Not many places to sit, and limited menu, but the 8-10 items on the menu have obviously been honed over time to be the best of a small selection instead of a large, mediocre selection. Other reviewers remarked they thought it was unsanitary. I didn't see this. Everything looked clean. The kitchen has no walls to divide from the seating area, so you'd really notice if anything dirty was happening. Gloves were worn when making food and removed to handle money. We were satisfied with the food but the experience was not so great. My cousin Nate has severe autism. As we were finishing up our food, Nate got close to this statue outside the restaurant (it's a fisherman holding a pot with a sign that reads "do not touch"), and captain Bob yelled at him not touch the statue. My aunt was mortified and immediately told the owner "I'm sorry, my son disabled". The owner Bob barked at her that he "didn't care" and that this "statue gets broken 4 or 5 times a year". I couldn't believe it. 1. If the statue was broken, we would have paid for it- no questions asked. Having a disabled person in our family we realize that sometimes accidents happen - and we are mortified if something does happen - but to have the owner act that way even after he knew my cousin was disabled left a sour taste in my mouth. 2. Yes, the statue is clearly labeled "do not touch". Ponder me this: what good does a sign do if someone if someone is illiterate? What about a child, or someone that is so severly disabled they are unable to read? If you're that concerned about your statue, put it somewhere else. I'm waiting until the statue falls over on someone and the business get sued for it. Overall I wouldn't recommend. Not friendly to families with disabled people. read more

We were turned away the first time we tried to go. We arrived 45 minutes before closing and despite the open sign being on we were told they were closed. We assumed they ran out of food and went back the next day. When we arrived we took a minute to look over the menu but were pressured to hurry and order with no one in line behind us. We order food for five people. After getting our food, 2 of our kids were eating donuts at the table, and we were told we couldn't eat at their tables since the kids had donuts and they didn't want people to think they sold donuts there. The food itself was ok, the crab cakes were oily and the chowder was potato heavy. We were very disappointed given the cost and treatment we received. read more

I went down to Long Beach with my two daughters for some spring break getaway time. As we wandered the streets looking for some decent food, we walked right past this place. If you blink you could miss it. Except for the sea captain holding a steaming bowl of chowder (actually a small fog generator) that instantly catches your attention. We took about 10 steps past the place but then turned around and gave it a chance. It is really intimate with only 3 tables inside and a couple outside when the weather is good. We instantly tried all three chowders that were cheerfully offered as samples by Bob himself. There was the traditional clam, seafood medley and Salmon. We decided to go with the Salmon Chowder. Both my kids loved it as did I. It was rich and creamy with a deep salmon taste. All their chowders come with a long breadstick for dipping. I also decided to try the salmon burger. It came with red cabbage coleslaw. The salmon burger itself was wonderful, except for the bun. I am not a big white bread fan and the bun was a large white traditional hamburger bun. It could be dressed up a little better with a smaller bun that would highlight the salmon burger itself. All in all a great experience. When we go back to Longview we will definitely stop in and say hi to Bob as well as partake of some of his delicious creations. read more

My girlfriend & I were waiting to check into our hotel, so we popped into town for a little lunch at Captain Bob's Chowder house. Very small but definitely not a hole in the wall. The staff was very friendly & even explained what a "crab roll" was on the menu. They only have a few chowders that vary every day & a few staple items, but everything was delicious! I ordered a cup of clam chowder & a crab roll, my girlfriend ordered the crab cakes with cole slaw. Our bill was around $25 I think but like I said, it was all delicious & the atmosphere was nice. Why the 4 stars then, instead of 5? After I was finished with my meal, the woman working called her husband & said that she was down to two more crab cakes, so please swing by & drop off more crab. I assumed it would be fresh crab meat, but he came by & dropped off a few cans of crab meat. Now, I'm sure it's locally canned crab meat, but still---kind of ruined the illusion. A tiny, unassuming space that isn't even open on Wednesdays doesn't inspire a ton of confidence, but the food at Captain Bob's is en pointe. In fact, it's the best seafood chowder I have ever had. As a clam hater, I was thrilled that they had a shrimp chowder, and it wasn't tiny bay shrimp either; we're talking about giant, fresh prawns. AMAZING. The crab roll was outstanding and chock full of crab, and the coconut prawns were crispy and satisfying. So what prevents this from being a 5-star review? The service. I understand that Long Beach is a small, tourist town, but to nickel and dime even for an extra paper plate (for my young child) is kind of overkill when you're spending $40 on lunch. The owners made no attempt to engage with my family, either, and yet talked at length to a pair of women who were clearly locals. But my biggest qualm is the the way the female owner speaks to her husband -- Captain Bob, I presume -- is nothing short of uncomfortable. She was snarky-borderline-nasty to him at least five times during our meal. I get that working with your spouse could be a hotbed for tension, but keep it away from the customers. If I wanted to listen to bickering while I eat, I would go over to my parents' house. read more

Perfection!! Super friendly Captain Bob does chowder, that's his bag - and he does it right. Not a complicated menu, restaurant or man. Small operation, perfectly appointed. Chowder in big pots, ready to serve. Minimal to no waiting for food. The day we were there he had Scallop & Mushroom Chowder ... a revelation. Absolute chowder perfection!! Fresh, creamy, warm, scrumptious. DO NOT get a "cup" ($4.50). I am telling you, you will regret it. Its not enough!! He also serves Crab Rolls and they were absolutely fresh and delicious - toasted, buttered roll & a ton of fresh crab with romaine leaf ... so good. You can get a bowl of chowder (6.50) and a Crab Roll (7.95) for I think $13.95. Best lunch on the peninsula! We also got a quart of chowder To Go for $11.95. Like I said its small, and there are few tables. There is some seating outside, but not much. We were there in February so we got a table, but I bet during the summer there's a line out the door. Captain Bob's Chowder is a complete failure. Chowder is the name of the restaurant; however, on Saturday August 21 it ran out of chowder at 1 pm. In a little beach town that relies 100% on tourists dollars, it needs to deliver during the busiest time of the year. The town was packed with beach goers and kite fliers (big contest on the beach), every restaurant had lines out the door.....and Captain Bob Chowder ran out of chowder!!! How is that possible? The beaches are always crowded in August, the kite festival is the same week end every year. Captain Bob should have known that they need chowder to sell. How can you say you feature a particular type of food and fail to have enough to sell? So what did Captain Bob do? It sold some marginally poor fish and chips (until they ran out of cod) then it closed for 30 minutes until it made a new batch of chowder. Here is a suggestion, make several batches, figure out how to keep them warm, then satisfy your customers during peak tourist season. read more

Discovered Captain Bob's six years ago when he did weekends out of a little house on the Main Street. He has now moved to a larger facility and expanded his offerings. We came in two times the week we stayed at the WorldMark Timeshare. Both chowders were excellent! We took home a quart from each visit.
