My boyfriend and I were vacationing in the area, using his family's beach house, and wanted to try a chowder place. We'd never heard of it before setting foot inside, but it was small, cozy, and immediately inviting. We both ordered clam chowder bread bowls, and were served generous portions of food as one of the two owners chatted with us about a variety of things as we sat and ate. The food was absolutely delicious, abundant with flavors galore, with perfectly tender clams. I have to lay constant praise upon the level of customer service I received. It was just so wonderfully inviting and she sat down and chatted with us for the entirety of our meal, as we visited in the off season and she had few customers. Very pleasant conversation. She even gave us free samples of the lobster chowder! We didn't ask for this: she just offered it, and we tried it, finding it utterly superb. I only have one complaint about my visit: I didn't have more of an appetite so I couldn't try more of the food! Oh my goodness it was easily the best chowderhouse I've ever been to, and I will happily visit it again the next time we're in the area. read more

Being a former Bostonian, I get a little weepy for good seafood. Though I prefer my crab with butter instead of mayonnaise, I took a leap of faith and got the crab roll. It was good, satisfyingly so. Crispy-toasted buttered roll on the outside, loaded full of good fresh crab meat on this inside, and thankfully very little mayo and celery, so the flavor of the crab totally shone. I think I got a little misty-eyed eating it. My hubs got the chowder, and he said it was worthy; his spoon stood up in it (his test) and it was quite flavorful, if not perhaps a bit strong on the onion. Tips for coming here: get here at least an hour before closing if you love chowder, because they sell out. Every batch is made fresh daily. This is a family-owned restaurant run by a husband and wife--not a chain. Once the chowder is gone, it's gone. If you don't want to be a chowder chump come the busy summer season, get here early. We wanted some chowder while in Long Beach. Yelp took us here. Captain Bob's Chowder. The staff was courteous, which is to say the Cap'n and his crew were very nice. I don't think Bob talks much, I can appreciate that. They are doing things real small time here, and that's good. We had chowder and fish and chips. The chowder was thickened with potato buds, I'm pretty sure. Which is weird, but wasn't horrible. The clam pieces were huge and tasted fresh. The fish and chips were hot and fresh when we ordered them, and they were not stingy with the cod. Good steak fries. Overall, the chowder was ho hum though. The thickness really kind of threw me off. I'm from CA, I'm used to the chowder in San Francisco. Nice folks though. Real small operation. Support small business. read more

My family is on vacation in Long Beach. We stopped here for lunch. The service was very rude. The man behind the counter looked annoyed with us. My kids are both under the age of 10. They happened to be out of chowder when we were here - we'll just have to try it next time we are in town because we will definitely be back. This is definitely a grandma/grandpa run place. When we walked in we were greeted with a happy "Hello". This is by far not a big place as there are only a few booths and a high top table. I had the fish and chips which was different kind of breading I ever had and a plate full of steak fries and a little rib of coleslaw; which I devoured. Got into town and wanted seafood for lunch. Wife had crab roll sandwich with cranberry slaw. Sandwich was huge and good. Slaw was great. I had fish and chips. Cod with light batter and a huge batch of fries. Added a bowl of chowder. Fish was not greasy and was flaky. Chowder had lots of clams but was a bit too potatoy for my taste. Fish and Chips were huge so in hindsight I would have just shared with my husband. Bob is lovely, kind, friendly, and accommodating. We have a licensed emotional support dog that is allowed in any building by federal law. All we wanted was 2 cups of clam chowder to go and the lady that worked there gave us the hardest time about it. Asked us a bunch of questions on what he is licensed to do. Pulled up the "law" on her iPad saying she is allowed to ask us these questions but we had already answered the question she was asking MULTIPLE times. We ended up just leaving because she made us feel so uncomfortable. We have never been treated that way before. We have brought our dog on a plane TWICE and we didn't get asked as many questions as she asked us. read more

While some may make claim to having the best chowder or fish and chips. No one comes close to Captain Bob. We have been coming here for years now and the quality of each item is amazing. Make sure to check the Facebook post for the daily special chowder served that day and make your requests early if you are coming into town. Bob and his wife are amazing at how they can pump out the food and it i can't say enough good about the qualify and freshness. And just as a bonus the chowders are gluten free which means no useless wheat filler. You won't regret going or even waiting in line. So go early and enjoy where the locals eat. read more

The food was good. All the seafood was fresh which I am a stickler on. I would call this a $$ and not a $ though. Traditional chowder is my preference being a west coaster and he delivered. Bob talks up a storm and can entertain you with convo while you eat (at least in the off season). I'd give the chowder an 8 personally. While the clams were there, the flavor was more potato heavy. Worth a shot if in the area and need a decent cup of chowder. He also shared thay if you see a place that says "award winning chowder" for that year, it means they're the worst in the area and it's the Chambers way of helping their business. read more

We have always enjoyed the chowder and crab rolls at Bobs. This trip to Long Beach we had been looking forward to grabbing lunch there again. As usual we ordered the crab roll and chowder combo. They chowder options vary daily and the offerings on this occasion were clam and salmon. Both were delicious as always. Unfortunately the "crab rolls" contained no actual crab, but were instead made with "Krab". They used to have real crab so this was a crashing disappointment. I don't want to come all the way to the beach to eat pollack and I'm really not happy with the false advertising. If that's the kind of crap you want to serve, fine. But please don't advertise something as what it is not. $6.95 for a hot dog roll full of dyed, processed imitation crabmeat is outrageous. Call it what it is, and lower the price or serve REAL crab(or even shrimp!) and raise the price. Just don't be dishonest. The food here is great. The chowder, fish & chips and baked potato soup were all delicious! So was the seafood chowder that we sampled. The fish was lightly breaded and a big piece. Captain Bob was great too. What a great guy. A MUST stop! read more

We stopped in here on our drive from Seaside because both Yelp & Trip Advisor gave them high ratings. Unfortunately we did not find this to be true. I have never had such awful chowder before. It was so salty & had a pasty consistency that the four of us couldn't eat it. And I'm a lover of clam chowder. We also shared a crab roll which was pretty good but again it had way too much salt. So incredibly tasty! The fish and chips were lovely, my favorite part however, and this is odd- was the tartar sauce! It was so tangy and creamy, definitely a good pair with the flakey fish.
