Went in with high expectations and to have an oyster cocktail for dinner later in the day- my wife had never had one of these delectable meals!Investigated our choices and found that there were unshucked oysters from the Pacific Northwest and Gulf oysters in an open bin in the refrigerated showcase. I asked where on the Gulf Coast and the reply was that the clerk did not know. Purchased several pieces of fish and then ordered the Gulf Coast oysters as I did not feel like shucking any!! I grew up in Galveston Texas and have eaten a lot of seafood- these oysters were inedible and could have severely injured an individual! Sad to say but I could have gotten better oysters from the Houston ship channel than these! The young man that waited on us should have trashed these oysters earlier. The guy running the place was awesome, personable and really helpful when helping me out with some advice and selecting some seafood. Of the 2 lbs of snow crabs I purchased one of those pounds had literally no meat in them. It was the strangest things I've ever seen. Was like a tiny string in the eggs and claws. I paid over $150 for a sack of crawfish that was half dead. UNACCEPTABLE. I had to go to Fiesta to get fresh, live crawfish that was caught the day before. I have been coming to Captain Dave's for a few years now for my crawfish orders. They always tell you how this years crop is before ordering. I ordered 50 lbs this year and they were large and very tasty. Please remember to bring in or have your order number to expedite your check out time and those behind you. They do charge a bit more than you grocery store but the quality is worth it. I also bought a pound of crab dip that was so good with just enough spice. The store is really pretty small so there is no safe way to protect against COVID transmission in this environment. It was scary to see a food provider consider pathogen prevention so carelessly. I'm originally from Louisiana and been in Texas since 2003, Captain Dave's is a great place to get fresh Seafood. They have a huge variety of seafood items. The catfish filets are always so good. Purchased somewhat live crawfish on June 26, 2021 that were supposed to be washed and graded for $148.00 but the crawfish were neither washed or graded. The crawfish had a thick build up of sand and mud they would not come off so we could not eat them. Spoke with Captain Dave the following Monday regarding the crawfish I purchased and he basically admitted that he knew that 2 or 3 sacks of the crawfish were not washed but still charged me the washed price. He also stated that there was nothing he could do after the fact. Don't waste your time or money at this place. read more

This has to be the best seafood market in Dallas, and I have been to most. The selection is outstanding and everything I have bought here has been as fresh as if it were swimming the same day. The prices are extremely fair and much cheaper than several fish markets in town. My only complaint is that it's a 30 minute drive from my house and 30 minutes back, so I always buy as much will fit in my freezer. What a gem! I've been looking everywhere for a market that sells fresh oysters in bulk. They happen to sell it by the dozen or by the case (100 oysters/case) at a very reasonable price. They also sell them year-round. I feel like I hit the jackpot on this one! It's a very small little shop, but they do have a variety of fish and other seafoods. They had Louisiana sausage as well. The scallops here looked humongous, so I might snag a few of those for a dinner one of these nights. read more

I bought some wild caught shrimp (50-60/lb) from Dave last time I was in town to make my mom's fave: "Aw Shucks Shrimp Cocktail". When I bought it, Dave said he could get me the smaller shrimp similar to what Aw Shucks uses (over 90/lb, except that it wouln't be farm raised) if I called ahead. When I came to pick it up, it was not the fresh, smaller shrimp expected, but the frozen, Asian farm raised shrimp bags I generally avoid and can find at any supermarket. (I ended up buying the frozen, small gulf shrimp at Kroger and all was well.) I will try again on my next visit, as I really prefer to frequent the individual businessperson for seafood rather than the large supermarkets. Dave does have a lot of good seafood (outside of the farm raised shrimp) at his store. read more

Woah nelly, prices are high! I really do not see what people are talking about this place being fresh--and eating fish as sashimi from here? I wouldn't feel comfortable trying it. When I walked in, there was a definitely smell of fish in the air. Fresh fish does not smell. Now, I'm not saying there wasn't some fresh fish there, there was, but most of it wasn't as fresh as it could be, and some looked downright off. I got some crazy expensive clams, $14 for one meal's worth, for one person, to put on the grill. Those were good, but I could have gotten clams for two at the local Asian market for much less, and been equally good. Guy behind the counter, (Dave?), had a bit of a snide attitude. Cap'n Daves is a seafood specialty market just west of Hwy 75 off of Plano Pkwy in Plano. This smallish store with limited display casing has a pretty comprehensive frozen stock in the back. I like to get the flash frozen shrimp there (9-12ish count) and their fish is usually very fresh. This is also a good place to order sacks of crawfish- they only get the top quality varieties. Their prices are much better on average than Central Market or Whole Foods, but they're pricier than the Asian markets. I give four stars instead of five because their selection is somewhat limited and once, about seven years ago, I got some tuna steaks that weren't spoiled but they got mealy on the grill (probably frozen/thawed too many times). read more

I recently visited Captain Daves for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I was so excited to find a wide variety of fish. Being from New England we were really craving fish. However, I was disappointed to find that most of the fish was frozen. We decided to purchase the fish. What a bad choice. This was the most fishy, off putting fish I had ever had.
