Did road trip to pick up something in the area and saw this on yelp. Reviews were generally positive so figure we give it a try. Look at how generous of the portion. We paid $22 vs when we were up in Maine a few years ago and paid $20 lobster roll on a hot dog roll with barely any lobster meat which was full of mayo and no fries. Now on to the taste test - The lobster meat was amazing with just enough of mayo and the bread was soo buttery that it melts in your mouth as we took each bite. Normally I am not fan of homemade fries because they are too thick. But this fries were like shoestring fries and it has a perfect texture of crunchy and starch. We stopped at Captain Jacks Roadside Shack for some bites on our way up to Mt.Snow. One of the girls on our trip raved about the fish tacos and lobster roll so we knew we had to make a detour. We were a little confused because the photos of the shack looked quite different in the past so they definitely changed something as there used to be a big wrap around porch and they added the trailer in the parking lot of the Coop. The food was good overall I had the fish tacos and fries which I found the tacos to be a little bland but someone else had the lobster roll and I tried a bite and it was incredible. Holy Wow! This place is a do.not.miss! As others have mentioned, it's a little tricky to find. It's at the local food co-op. Park and go to the front door of the co-op and then you will see it between there and the road all the way toward the back. There is an enormous amount of outdoor picnic table seating. We ordered the famous lobster roll with fries and a clam basket . The Lobster roll is enough to feed two people, especially with the fries. We saw many people order food to go, but proceeded to eat there and take the rest home. The clam basket was also fantastic-- whole belly clams delicately fried-- so fresh and delicious! These were my favorite but only because it seems to rare to get such high quality whole belly clams. I do wish they had cocktail sauce, but they do not (and honestly, wasn't really missed). We ordered the onion straws with the clam basket, and if I lived near here, I would order them once a week just to sprinkle on vegetables, salads, etc. Soooooo good and light. The above with two drinks and a 20% tip came to $65. Considering that if we weren't just passing through town we could have easily had 4 meals from this, it was such a great deal! It's been a while since the last time I've visited MA/C.Jacks, 6years to be exact and let's just say that things have drastically changed, The stand/food truck looks great and welcoming but it wasn't my favorite meal. The day after I felt absolutely terrible and was bed ridden the day after. It was the only thing I eat that day so I know it wasn't anything else. I expected great food, service and cool eaters because I was a regular back in the day but got just the opposite. First off I didn't feel well, I felt ill, the service was pleasant and nice but the crowd was at another level. While I was Speaking with my mother on the phone I'm Spanish, who is 3,000 miles away, I heard some guy behind me say "speak English' talking about me to his wife and kids . It was followed by chuckles in the crowd. "Where am I?" I said to myself. Lol Yikes it's 2021!! Just remember that there are 24 million Latinos in the US workforce which makes up 16% overall. 25% of the restaurant workforce is Latino in the US (this does not include agriculture and other forms of hospitality) so if you don't like Us, then I wouldn't go out to eat just sayin'. Was looking for a spot to grab lunch after scoring some...'stuff' at the NETA dispensary up the road. So we 'Yelped' the area and found this place! Pic's had me looking for a ...um, shack! Instead it was a big red food wagon. One of those things you would see parked on the side of the road serving hotdogs and things, and, well, indeed this was serving hotdogs and things. Guess the shack is undergoing some kind of restorations or something. Got some wholebelly fried clams, on the mid size, no huge, gory, explode in your mouth ones, ( actually sometimes a clam fan really needs to go for it, ignoring the " who was the first person to think of eating a friggin' mollusk" and get that ancient caveman wholebelly experience) these were just kinda user friendly with a decent batte, just enough 'belly' and a wholesome crunchy goodness going on. Onion rings were not rings per se, they were the straw type version, really thin and greasy. My kind of yum. French fries were thinner than Micky D's, I mean reaally thin. Overcooked a tad, also a GOOD thing. Cole slaw on the side was nothing to write home about, but did the job. Read some 'smack talk' on here about a rude crew, but I didnt see it. Everybody seemed happy to see us, and service was right on. Food came out quick, the person handing it to me was polite. Next time I go up north in search of smoke, I will stop by again. read more

I got the lobster salad with mixed green salad. Comes with balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the side. The salad was very fresh. The lobster salad was nothing special. It tasted watery like it was sitting too long and was starting to go. Just found out they use frozen lobster which explains the weird texture. For $22.46 it's def not worth it. The amount of lobster isn't comparable to Webster's Fish Hook in Northampton was only $16 and came with alot more lobster and taste better. Lobster roll was pretty hearty but the fried scallops was not that impressive. Outdoor seating was not really comfortable as the tables are really old and felt like it was going to fall apart. Finally and most importantly, we did not enjoyed by yelled at by the staff to not stand in a straight line. Waited over an hour for a plate of scallops and fries. Took my money and never told me that it would be an hour wait. I went to ask how long it would be before my meal came out. I ordered a lobster roll. And all I got was attitude. Let me explain. Saturday (6/13/20) was a beautiful day and I took a road trip from Connecticut to Vermont and back. I went up I-91 in the morning and came back home along Route 10 from Northampton. I intended on stopping at Captain Jack's for a lobster roll and specifically skipped lunch so I wouldn't be full. I'd never been to Captain Jack's before but had read some positive reviews and have always wanted to try it; it looks like the kind of roadside food joint that appeals to me and I do try to support small independent businesses. I pulled in the parking lot around 5:45p and got in line. After waiting - and socially distancing for 15 minutes or so - I placed an order for a lobster roll and a Coke. That's it. The order came to the $25.14 and with tip almost $29. I was given a slip with "12" printed on it and a time stamp of 6:00p. I joined the crowd of about 20 others waiting in the parking lot for their number to be called. Basically when the food is ready for pick-up, a worker either puts it on a plate or in a bag, they call your number and you walk up to a table and pick it up. They were in the low 80's and calling out an order number every 2-3 minutes. After about 10 minutes of standing, staring at my phone and waiting for my number to be called, I headed for the nearby picnic tables and sat down. I had chosen to eat there and was already realizing this was going to take a while. So I caught up on email, downloaded some podcasts and tried to keep myself occupied as I waited for my number to be called. At one point, no numbers were called - maybe for 10-15 minutes - and realizing I had been waiting 45 minutes and they were now calling customers with tickets in the 90's I got up and headed down to the truck. It was pushing 7p, the sun was going down, it was getting cool and there was no prospect of getting dinner anytime soon. I went back to the woman taking orders and told her I'd like my money back. She wasn't pleased. I told her I had waited 45 minutes and was done waiting. 45+ minutes is a good 20 minutes longer than I'm willing to wait - at Captain Jack's or at almost any restaurant. If it were a sit-down restaurant I would have gotten up and left. But since I pre-paid, I had to get my money back. If it were $10 or so, I would have just left, but $30 is considerable - especially in today's economy - and I wanted to be refunded. She told me that they had already made the food; I told them that wasn't my problem. It's a lobster roll - they make it in batches, fry up some fries and put it on a plate. Why is this taking close to an hour? She had to ask the "boss" if she could refund the money and he mumbled something and she asked me what I had ordered. A lobster roll and a Coke I told her. I showed her my ticket with "12" on it and she told me she found the order and refunded me. OK. Normally in a refund situation with a credit card they give you a receipt showing the refund. She didn't. I had to ask her for a paper receipt showing the money had in fact been refunded; she handed me a slip of paper, showing lobster roll and Coke refunded with note on bottom saying "to long of a wait". She never apologized for the delay (nor did she ever thank me when I ordered the food.) And to add insult to injury, I didn't ask for a refund for the tip - even though the service and experience was nothing short of indifferent. She did, however, make a point of telling me customers know they have to wait and do so willingly. Perhaps. Though I did hear grumblings from others who were waiting by the picnic benches about how long it was taking. I left, drove home and got dinner at another restaurant in Connecticut. After getting home, I checked my phone for indications of a refund. I had paid with my Apple Card (MasterCard credit card) and sure enough, no notice of a credit. So I pulled out the receipt - the one I insisted the woman give me showing a credit - and noticed that though the order she credited was indeed a lobster roll and a Coke, it was also for one with onion rings instead of fries (a .50 cent upcharge) and not my order. My meal cost $25.14; the amount credited was $25.68. And it wasn't credited to a MasterCard, it was credited to a Visa debit card. So someone got their meal for free and I still got dinged for nearly $30 for a dinner I never ate. That's sloppy business and shows callous indifference to customers. I called the number listed on their Facebook page and no answer plus no way to leave a message. Great customer service. Here's a couple of suggestions for the owner/managers of Captain Jack's. - Hire friendly people. - Thank customers for the their time and money - especially after standing in line for 15 minutes - just to order - and waiting around 3 times as long to take delivery of their food. - Give customers a copy of their receipt when they order food so they can confirm the order. - Tell them how long they'll have to wait. read more

Unbeatable and very eatable. Everything is fresh and tasty down to our side of barbecue sauce. Perhaps it's homemade! Can't say I've finished a side of fries in quite a while until coming here. Also can't say I haven't been able to finish a whole lobster roll in a while either. It was the biggest I've ever seen. Well worth every penny. We have enough leftover for another one! Although, I wish they had CT style hot n buttery lobster rolls. The bun itself was toasted and buttered but they need to bigger. The lettuce was a big help. I just prefer hot lobster! The season begins! Our first visit of the year did not disappoint. We had the chicken BBQ sandwich topped with dill pickles and heaped with their amazing onion rings - thin, crispy and plentiful - and the crispy chicken sandwich with lettuce and tomato. We sat in the car 'cause 39*F with a 10 mph wind was a bit too nippy, but we were just plain happy to be there. Captain Jack's is darn near perfect on a mild night. Their burgers are inexpensive and tasty. Their lobster rolls are piled high with some of the best lobster around (and I try to get to the Maine shore whenever I can). Their fish and chips are so large that we split them sometimes. All of their seafood is fresh - they don't even have a freezer! It's a drive-in, you order from ever-friendly window help, choose your picnic table and a short wait later you're in Roadside Shack heaven. I wasn't sure what to expect coming here as this was my first time, but holy moly it was so good! I got the lobster roll which was $23 for the roll and fries. I thought it was on the pricer side but then I opened my to-go container and saw a mountain of lobster! I had to eat some with a fork before I could eat it as a sandwich there was that much on there. I brought my daughter to western MA to see some colleges and to visit my son who was living in Northampton. Having lived in New England many years ago, I couldn't leave without introducing my children to foods only available in the NE - lobster rolls and clam strips with the belly. I was turned on to this unassuming food cart after learning that it had won Best Lobster Roll according to an article in MassLive.com. The food was everything I had hoped it would be. The clams were flavorful and perfectly seasoned. And the lobster roll - the meat itself was delightful, but eating it in the grilled bun with some romaine lettuce took it to another level. Found this place while camping in Massachusetts. It seems like it moved spots from the pics on google and is now a good truck. They have picnic tables set up spaced nicely apart.
