I'm intrigued by getting a full belly clam roll here, but I've been spoiled by eating at Bob's up in Kittery, ME. So rating on the Chicago dogs - hit the spot. Great find in Northampton. I'll be back for the kraut - and maybe a clam roll.

Ahoy Matey! If you're looking for one of the best whole belly clams or fish tacos then welcome to Captain Jack's Roadside shack. I've coming here for a few years already and finally decided to officially review it. Whole belly clams are plump and juicy and the fish tacos are delicious. Plus you get two tacos per order. What a deal! I love the contrast between the cold crunchy cabbage/cilantro and hot crispy fish. The belly platter comes with a small side of coleslaw and fries but you can substitute the fries for the onion rings for only $.50 more. It's worth it! Their haystack style onion rings are super skinny and tasty. Portions are generous too! Lobster rolls are great with nice large lump and claw meat. However, I would recommend to go when the lobsters are in season between June and December so the meat is sweeter. Outdoor seatings are plentiful but in the winter, you can sit inside the river valley co*op market next door. Service is friendly, quick, and simple. One window for ordering and one to pick up. I always come here once or twice a year when I visit my Northampton friend. Highly recommend this place for comfort and casual dining!

The lobster roll is absolutely amazing! There's so much lobster in it that we got an extra roll and my husband and I split it. The onion strings are to die for!

We were looking for a spot to get a lobster roll while we were traveling through the area, and we chose Captain Jack's. It was DELICIOUS! So good and so glad we stopped. The roll was packed with lobster, and the fries were great too. You order at the window, and all the tables and seating are outside. They call your name when your order is ready. We didn't have to wait too long, and it was a beautiful day so it was nice to sit outside. Definitely stop here for a lobster roll!

One of my requests during my visit to Massachusetts was to visit this place. We lucked out and it was empty. Plenty of outdoor seating and no line. I knew I wanted the lobster roll. My husband went a little crazy and ordered fish tacos and fish and chips as well. Daughter in law had the clam sandwich. So much food! Expensive but I feel like it was worth it. Quality seafood. Delicious! Perfect visit. So glad we came.

There's a certain romanticism behind the idea of being in New England, stopping by a roadside seafood shack, ordering a Lobster Roll and sitting outside while enjoying the Summer breeze. Actually, that's probably on a lot of people's bucket list. I only recently found out about this place thanks to Yelp, but it was a little confusing because even though there was a sign for Captain Jacks, we couldn't visibly see it from the roadside. All you could see was the River Valley Co-Op, and even while driving around the parking lot, we had to ask someone to find out that it was located behind the building. An additional sign in the parking lot would've been helpful. You form a line and order at the window and wait for your number to be called. Depending on what you order, it could be a good deal or very expensive. On this visit a lobster roll was $30 and it came with hand cut fries. I never finished the roll even though I ate from it and both my mom and dad ate from it too. The scallops were good but being a Floridian and having had many scallops in my lifetime, this wasn't the best I've had but again, it was good. We also had the fish and chips and those were just ok. I wish the fish had been a little bit more crispy, or maybe that's the NE way? I think the little onion rings were better than the fries. Overall the food to me was just ok. The ambience and setup they have is very nice, especially on a cool summer day. I could see myself coming back here sometime if I were in the area.

They didn't have clams at Captain Jack's Roadside shack because prices had gone up 70% last week, so I settled for the best lobster roll I've ever had, anywhere. The onion rings also were the best, thin, sweet, crispy. My lemonade too! I have had lobster rolls from Maine to Rhode Island, but this beat them all. Why? Generosity. The sweet lobster meat was loaded onto a buttery roll then placed on top of a pile of the most delicate onion rings imaginable. The guys inside the shack deserve applause.

    An amazing lobster roll!

Sunday lunch at Captain Jacks exceeded all expectations! Went there for the lobster roll substituted onion rings for fries. The Lobster roll easily had enough lobster to make rolls, delicious and so generous on the portions. The onion rings where thin shoestring which I absolutely love. Jacks is in a small building, with outdoor seating only which is shared with neighboring Ri er Valley Coop; the dining area is covered which is nice as it was very sunny the day we were there. I will be back again!

Seriously fresh and delicious lobster rolls! Light mayo so the flavor of lobster really shines through. The buttered up roll compliments the lobster's flavor! Service was quick. Also you can choose to eat outside or inside the Co-op. And there's clean restrooms and plenty of parking. Definitely coming back !

What can you say ? Hands-down my favorite lobster roll ever. But that is just the beginning. The onion straws/rings are out of this world. They are worth the trip by themselves. Keep up the good work love this place.

Been going here for years. Food is always good. Service is good. Tends to be a little line so make sure you get there early.

Ask the Community - Captain Jack's Roadside Shack

    Is the food fried?

Some is and some is not- you could probably call them and they could be more specific about non-fried choices

    Do they have fried shrimp?

I don't think so, but, why would you want shrimp in Mass? Get the the lobster, it is local, fresh and...amazing!

    Does this restaurant have alcohol?

No! Soda, Lemonade and Iced Tea.

We had our pup with us, so spots where we could sit down were even more limited, but luckily, a lunch at Familiars was only a very long line away. While the group waited outside at one of the sidewalk tables, I went inside to order at the counter. I got the chicken salad sandwich and have to say I was so surprised by how delicious it was. I'm not from here, so from just the outside and where you order, I thought they were a cafe first with food options, but nope. Definitely wrong, they make a great sandwich. And the coffees were also delicious! Baristas and team were all friendly, the space inside was very cool, cozy and comfortable and they had plenty of outside tables as well. You order at the counter and they will bring all of the food out to you, you also grab your own waters inside. A nice mix of casual and service. If I was local or visiting when I needed a space to bring my laptop and get some remote work done, this seems like a great option.

First, tons of outdoor seating, the outside is gorgeous and so welcoming. I got one of their spring specials, the Sugar Bush Latte. The latte had the perfect amount of flavor and not too much sweetness (which I prefer). Before I left, I also got an iced black tea and an iced americano for my husband. The iced black tea was perfection, flavorful yet still bitter. The iced americano (unsweet) confirmed that their espresso was DELISH.

When we went in for a tasting, we had lunch first. The Bbq pork sandwich was one the best sandwiches I've ever had. We also got a tuna melt and a quiche which were both delicious. When Daisy came out with the cupcakes for us to try they were so helpful and I felt so confident that they would make everything run smoothly for delivery and set up at my venue. The cupcakes were beyond any expectation. The lavender cake was delicious, better than any other floral cake I've ever had. My fiancé who is a frosting critic couldn't get enough. I've tried a few other bakeries in the area and this cake blew them away. We are going back tomorrow to pick up more pastries to bring home. The bread itself is average to above average depending on the loaf of the day. But its consistently troubling issue is the large amount of flour caked on and baked on the outside of the loaves. They use an extreme amount of flour on the raw dough as a release from their baking baskets, and after the bake they just leave it all stuck to the loaf. When I bring a loaf home I often spend a few minutes smacking it and scraping it over the sink where I dislodge so much raw flour from the outside of the bread. Sometimes there's a rind of undercooked flour cemented to the outside of the loaf. This is wildly unacceptable.
