Popped in here while in Acushnet for my son's baseball tournament. The inside is a small pub/bar that was very clean and quaint. The bartender/server was the most friendly/helpful I've come across in years if not my life. What a refreshing bit of positivity and kindness during these times. She helped me understand what they could make quickly and what would be a good option for a portuguese specialty. The beer was fresh, tasty, and inexpensive and the pork cutlet sandwich was tasty and just the right portion. Would love to try it again as their menu was vast and clearly thoughtful. I ordered the chicken Mozambique, the rice was not very good, the singular olive in the rice had a pit in it, the chicken itself was juicy but the sauce was very watery (not sure if this is normal, it is my first time trying this meal). The sauce had okay flavor, I could see what they were going for but it was a very distant flavor that I don't think soaked into the chicken very well. I dipped the bread we got in the sauce and was able to taste it better there. The service was very fast and the waitress was very kind. There were a lot of people at the bar which was very welcoming, and the general atmosphere wasn't bad. Maybe the food was just not for us. read more

we stopped in for the day and tried a few different things on the menu - my favorite with the cacoila sandwich with fries. in my opinion, it is the best around! i really enjoyed the clams casino - super flavorful i would definitely order again. i didn't love the shrimp alfredo but i will say that it is a big serving! finally, grandmas pudding was highly recommended and i was glad i tried it because it was delicious! we had great service and the place is nice too read more

This is a total win win restaurant no matter which dish you choose. My husband had a sole special and I had codfish. Both were melt watering entrees. We engaged in conversation with many people around us and every one was singing their praise on what they ordered. The people of New Bedford come here! They know good Portuguese food, and moderate prices. This is the real deal. Shrimp Mozambique huge plentiful shrimp, and excellent Sa use. We split a $6.50 salad. Went extravagant with the bottle of Dow wine $35 It was good though. I had Gomes de sar....pulled cod and spices and cut up pieces of potatoes. Huge. The Portuguese soup was excellent. Edit to add: I called to rectify the situation at the suggestion of my husband, who's far more patient than I am, and was promptly told to just take the egg off the food as if I can suck all the yolk off the damn rice and steak. As a business owner myself I'm going to be damn sure to let every single one of my clients know about my awful experience. Never again. I definitely won't be going back. I tried ordering over the phone and whoever was taking the order couldn't hear anything I was saying so I had to repeat myself several times, then they handed the phone off to someone else for a total and when they read back the order it wasn't what I wanted. After clarifying that I just wanted a surf and turf plate and a steak dinner with NO EGGS, I pick up my food and it's literally covered in egg yolks. I can't even eat it the food I just paid like $50 for and I don't even want a damn refund or a new plate. I shouldn't even NEED one after clarifying and repeating myself as many times as I did. What a waste of money. Never going back, nor will I suggest them to anyone else. I'm so beyond upset right now. read more

After a cranberry bog tour in Acushnet, we asked some locals to recommend a restaurant for a good lunch. Luckily, we were directed to Captains Place. The food, hospitality and service was absolutely outstanding. We tried several appetizers and each perfectly suited our tastes. Fantastic. We opted for some of the entree specials (grilled octopus, rabbit and sea bass) and they were better yet. Best of all, we had the pleasure of meeting the owner (Joe) who could not have been more welcoming. We felt like we were chatting with an old friend. We HIGHLY recommend Captains Place and hope to return there in the near future. For us, it was well worth the drive from Narragansett. Top shelf! read more

The food is always delicious. The service is always fast and on top of it. The owners are always so kind. The cooks do a great job!

We have eaten at this restaurant numerous times. Sometimes the food is exceptional, and other times it's bad (I can count 5 times). For example; the steak kabob is usually excellent, but once it was bad. Even got very sick from it. Another time we went with a party of 8 and most of the meals were not up to the level of what Captains Place usually serves. One thing we noticed: If you come here and it's very busy, usually the food is better. If you come on a slow day or order a meal they don't usually specialize in, you are rolling the dice. The last time we went was another bad experience. An expensive meal was served with food cooked the day before and passed off as fresh. Haven't been back since. The worst part is, even if you bring it to the waitresses attention, she tells the owner and absolutely nothing ever gets done about it. Other than that, if you go on a busy night, chances are you'll get a decent meal. Stick with their popular best selling items. read more

Is true gem of Portuguese cuisine! Stopped by this place for lunch and it was great! The food was very good, and they have a fairly large menu, broken up into seafood, cod, beef, and chicken dishes, all reasonably priced, most dishes $9-15, with some getting up there. They also have a specials board of true Portuguese special, Chafana, stewed rabbit, roasted goat. The menu combined with the price makes this place that I will be returning too. Minus a star for the fact that although our server was great, another one severely messed up the table's next to us order. Didn't have to wait long, once ordered, for take out. Parking lot was jam packed .... tons of people eating at outside tables. Ordered a cacoila sandwich which comes with fries. Fries were only slightly warm and on the dry side, seemed to be just rewarmed. Person who took order on phone was very pleasant. They do not have ketchup packages, nor did they offer it on the side. The meat tasted nothing like cacoila. Was not marinated long enough for sure. They cooked the meat with bay leafs and did not bother to take them out while making the sandwich (so it included 2 firm bay leafs, 1 small and 1 large .... with the stems). Good thing I peaked in the sandwich before I ate it. Never had this happen before. I've had these sandwiches a few times and they are not getting any better, in taste. Even though the price was reasonable, will not buy a cacoila sandwich here again. Tons of people go here, so they must have some really good meals. Just don't get the cacoila sandwich. I did not include kale soup in this rating..... which I have ordered in the past. They always change the ingredients.... sometimes macaroni, different type of beans, and I think they even have put a small amount of cabbage in it. This weekend we had dinner with family at Captain's Place. This was the first time we have dined at this restaurant and after our meal we may make it one of our go-to restaurants in the New Bedford area. We started out our meal with an order of calamari which was delicious. The serving size was massive and the dish was not overly greasy. When it came time for our main entrées my dobrada was incredible and my wife enjoyed her steak and shrimp Mozambique. The only issue we had with the food was that there was way too much to eat in one sitting, which as you can tell is a huge struggle. The only genuine critique we had was the fact that the plates were broken and the cups were cracked. If it wasn't for the broken plates, then this restaurant would have easily been a five star experience. read more

Absolutely amazing lunch with my family . Wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Appetizers were excellent . Kale soup was as good as my homemade soup. Captain seafood was a huge pan of shrimp, scallop , little necks and linguica in a garlicky Mozambica sauce . Hubby had steak and shrimp with garlic wine sauce . Well we stopped in here for lunch on a spur of the moment kind of thing. We were very disappointed. We had a tuna melt...how hard is that? The bacon was raw, the chips were soggy, and I ate the tuna out of the sandwich. What does that tell you?? I will say the wait staff was great. The french dip sandwich that my wife had was basically deli meat with juice on it. Flavor was aok. Anyway, i do not know why this place is so busy. Maybe because it is the only choice in the area.
