I was hoping to give zero stars, but that's not an option. This place is full of crap, they told me that I needed an oxygen sensor and it was going to cost me close to $400 unless the warranty company was going to pay for it then they would have charged the warranty company less. What's with that, why charge me more? Anyway the problem they said that existed did not exist a clamp just needed to be tightened. So these guys thought they could take advantage of me, which I was ready to have them do the work until I found out otherwise. I will be reporting them to my warranty company. 5 stars doesn't do these guys, nay, professionals justice. I came in with a flat tire, and I drive a sports car. This winter hasn't been the most friendly with record lows and piles upon piles of snow. I came in and was immediately greeted by Rich Balwin, the manager, with a smile and firm handshake. I could immediately tell he wanted to help. Upon further inspection, I found out I needed a total of 3 tires replaced, and the rear brakes replaced as well. Rich and I started talking asking about my car (it has a rotary engine) and how it's been handling. I told him the heater hadn't been working and other issues. Rich said let us take a look at it and see what we can find. His sincerity calmed my nerves. He told me the story of him riding his motorcycles in years past, and the way he told the story made me not think of him as a mechanic. It was something I never had in mechanics prior to today. We began looking at tires and he was extremely knowledgeable and gave his recommendation. I know there is a stigma with mechanics, but these professionals were different. I was informed the tires would need to be shipped in, but it would be a few hours before they arrived, but immediately afterwards, Rich offered me a ride to either work or my condo so I could pass the time. Flabbergasted, I accepted. I had never been offered this kind of service from any dealership (I am 1 in a family of 6 with 7 cars 5 of which are luxury). Rich just let me know that he was going to accommodate the other customers prior to taking me. While Rich was hitting on all cylinders with the other customers, I went to the garage to grab something. I believe it was Mike Doman who was working on my car, saw me come up and assisted. He could tell I was a little flustered and made a small joke. He made me laugh a little bit which only made me feel better after the bad luck I was experiencing prior to entering the shop. Fast forward to Rich driving me home, I felt so impressed and astonished that I called the shop to let them know I had ordered pizzas for them. Rich said I didn't have to do that, but I was so grateful for their service. I got a ride back in to the shop. Again, Rich greeted me and said my car was all set. They had fixed a bunch of issues with some kind of magic. The dealerships couldn't fix some of these issues. I was impressed, no, beyond impressed. Having worked in customer service before, these professionals treated me as if they came up with the entire concept of "customer service" itself. The car runs amazingly now (just shy of 100k miles and with a rotary engine). The cost was less than other places for similar repairs. I have already begun to spread word of these guys to family and friends. The professionals here have a passion for their work, and it is easy to tell. These people were very honest with me - especially Mike. I had brought my 10 year old 73K miles Toyota 2002 Rav 4 in because it was having problems with the tranny (jerky shifting in lower gears) -later learned this was a very common problem for this model year not revealed by Toyota until many years later - ( shame on you Toyota!). I dropped the car off and returned to work and the shop did a thorough check of my vehicle. They not only spotted and verified the tranny issue, but two other problems previoulsy pointed out to me by other shops - leaking shocks and uneven wear on tires. I received no charge at all for the diagnotics and written recommendations - and this shop really helped me in finalizing my decision to finally trade this old boy in. read more

First, I'm real skeptical of mechanics since like most have been burned before. Based on these reviews alone, gave Rich and his shop a chance. Brought in my car for a muffler and oil change but knew there was underlying problems with the front end. Used car so I expected it. He fixed my car perfectly. Yes it was $1,200 but I knew the street value of the repair and here's the difference. He checked the whole car and pointed out the obvious and I felt comfortable with it. My sons car would not start, wouldn't even turn over. After going online we trouble shot everything that was recommended. Over the next three weeks, we checked the fuses, put in a new battery, new negative ground, new ignition switch and finally a new starter. After all that, it still would not turn over. I recommended that my son take it to a dealership where they work on the same type of cars day after day and could figure it out. That didn't happen, as he wanted to take it to Car-X in Wheeling, as his single previous experience with them was positive (they put in a new power steering pump) in the past. We had the car towed to Car-X and informed the manager, Ken, about the symptoms and all the work that had been done prior to bringing it in. I was floored when he called and said the car was ready to go. When I arrived to pick up the car he showed me a blown neutral safety switch fuse that was located in the trunk of the car. The fuse was less than $2 and the hour long diagnostics was around $50. WOW!! I'm not so sure I would have had the same experience and costs at a dealership. Listed are a series of repairs and events that have taken place primarily over the last 2-3 years due to service at the CarX in Wheeling on Milwaukee Ave. The first incident is my last experience with them. I want to make this review as objective as I can, while adding some personal thoughts at the end. My family and I have been bringing our cars here for almost the past 10 years. I had a new right - upper and lower ball joint installed by CarX in April of this year on my Honda Accord. Just over a month ago, I had driven off to meet clients nearby. While I pulled out of a subdivision, my front right tire caved inward, my car was immediately immobile, and I was stuck literally in the middle of a busy residential route/street during oncoming rush hour traffic. I am extremely thankful that I had not pulled out onto the street while an oncoming car was close by. Otherwise that car would've slammed right into my driver side door going 40+ mph into my "parked" car. I had to call 911 to get it towed, and tell my clients that I couldn't make it to our meeting. I called CarX, and the manager said if it's something they did, they would "make it right." CarX found that it was the lower ball joint they had installed in April that had failed. They said it was due to the part failing and not due to faulty installation. Although I have heard from an Acura dealership mechanic that this was likely due to a bolt on the part not being torqued the right amount during installation. But because I'm not a mechanic, I cannot comment further on this. After 2-3 weeks of follow-ups with the manager and General Manager, then follow-ups and some haggling on who was to pay what and by when (regarding fees on the rental car, towing and storage yard fees, and the body work that needed to be done), the car was finally going to the body shop to get repaired. After getting the car back from the body shop (around week 3 or 4), the car's alignment was slightly off, pulling to the left a bit. So I called in and they asked me to bring it back to get it checked out, but only on the following Monday (it was a Friday when I picked-up my car, and their Saturday was apparently booked). Also, the body shop that they used did not fix the numerous marks on the bottom section of my bumper from the towing of my car. And the front edge of the front passenger door would scrape against the right fender that they did work on, making the door difficult to open. None of which I bothered to address in the end because I couldn't waste any more time on the matter. My father had purchased a new set of Kuhmo tires from CarX for his car about 2 years ago. His front right tire had been leaking ever since even after he brought it back. During an oil change at a local Acura dealership. They had found a cigarette butt lodged in between the tire and wheel that was causing the leak the whole time. They said it must've been lodged in there somehow during its initial installation. My wife's car was brought in to have its brakes done probably about 3 years ago. Right away after the work had been done, the brakes were squeeking very loudly. I took it back I believe within a couple weeks, and they said it was fine. Just this past month, we brought it in to an Acura dealership and they found that it has been wearing unevenly. Because of this, it needs to be replaced again very soon. It's still squeeking a great deal today. CarX gave me four new tires, 2 tires at a time. The second time I went back, they put on different model tires than the first 2. So I went back to have this taken care of. The check engine light on my car had been going on quite often earlier this year. I had CarX replace the evaporator coil on one occasion, a new catalytic converter was put on a couple years ago, I believe a sensor was replaced as well on yet another occasion, due to their recommendations each time. And yet my car's check engine light still comes on and off. I had work done on it, then went to get my emissions test done, only to find the light come on just before I got there. So after failing the emissions test, I needed to bring my car back to CarX, then run to the emissions testing again. The light is still on to this day. And while they were repairing the front right lower ball joint, they looked at what was causing it and said it is now the catalytic converter, which they replaced just a couple years ago. Suffice it to say, the manager, General Manager and staff were very kind throughout all these incidents. Despite some haggling with the major incident on who was to cover what, they did take care of things and did their best to "make it right" in the end. I just wish they'd "make it right" the first time. This would've saved lots of time and money, from being without a car, waiting in their waiting room doing work off my phone, and potentially being in a dangerous car accident. read more

Rich has no idea what he is doing. He lost his cool with his multiple times. They broke a piece of our car when we were doing a routine oil change, the 45 minute oil change turned into 9 hours. They had to scramble to find a new part, they stayed 2 hours after closing because they could not fix the car in time. We found out when we went to buy new tires that they striped the lugs on the car and now we need new ones. The shop itself smells, its tiny, its cold. They are unwelcoming. There was an older white gentleman that works there and I asked for a price for an oil change. He was incredibly rude and acted like I was wasting his time. I was told by another person not to go there as well, but I was driving past and thought if they could do it, but the customer service was horrible and he didn't seem like he knew what he was speaking about with the few words he did speak. read more

I had my 2007 Subaru Outback with 140,000 miles / six-months service on Saturday. We arranged to drop it off on Friday so they could work on it on Saturday. I had four new Goodyear tires shipped in to be installed and it it need an oil change and the oil in both differentials to be changed (original). They did a great job as scheduled and and managed to find a coupon to save me $50 to boot. The mechanics have a wealth of experience and i believe are very good. We have three used cars that we plan on driving forever so knowing that they are safe and reliable is as important as is receiving value when servicing them. Rich and his team meet my requirements. I have been to this location at least 3 times now, and every time have had great service. This most recent adventure found us at 4p on a Saturday with a broken sensor on our tire. I called and they offered to fix it same day!! The part took longer to get delivered than expected, so they had to stay late to fix it- we were so appreciative and impressed! I had called another garage earlier (only because it was closer to where we were when we discovered the issue) but they were rude and told us they were closing and couldn't help us until Monday morning. As this is our main car that we use to transport our family, waiting was not favorable. So we were particularly grateful that this location was willing to help! Really, this is a great place to take your car. I sometimes wonder if I'm getting a good deal, as I always wonder when having work done on my car, as I am completely clueless about these matters. This place is the worst. They told me over the phone when I called to schedule that an oil change would be half what they actually charged me. They could have very easily asked me what my vehicle was and given me an accurate quote. I could've gotten cheaper service at a dealership. Plus, they told me my tires need to be replaced and estimated $700 to replace them. There's nothing wrong with my tires. They also did an oil change, which was ok, but then they lost a bolt and put the shield under my car back on wrong. So it was catching the wind and scraping on the ground. They are incompetent. I ended up buying a new bolt and fixing it myself. I came here because reviews were good. But seems like the owner or manager has changed since most of those good reviews. I took my car in here for a second opinion and the moment the one of them got in my car and heard the noise it was making he's like its gotta be the barrings & he was right. BUT somehow two other places couldn't tell me that!? The manager Rich, is great! very friendly- from the first time I called for information. When they were done fully inspecting my car- he took me to the car and in detail explained and showed me what needed to be repaired! Def. a thumb up! even for someone who knows about cars i think its great that he will take you around and show you what they are going to do to your car! very happy with the service to my car & customer service to us! A good and trusted mechanic is hard to come by. Rich and the guys who work here do a great job of fixing cars at reasonable prices. They have repeatedly fixed both my car and my son's car many times over the years and I have always found them to charge fairly. This is an especially good place to come to for a second opinion when your dealer is telling you they need to do some repair for an exorbitant amount of money that you may be suspicious of. As an example, on a recent visit, my Toyota dealer wanted $949 for a new set of back brakes on my 2006 Toyota Sequoia, and also insisted I needed a complete brake flush. It sort of staggered my imagination that routine brake jobs could cost a grand now, and that you would only get half a set of brakes at that. I took the Sequoia to this CarX location and Rich and the guys did the same brake job (and with a lifetime guarantee on the pads - much better than the dealer) for a total out the door price of $383. They also did a test of the brake fluid with litmus paper and said it wasn't even halfway dirty yet, and that I had many, many miles to go before a flush was needed. I love it when they walk me out to see under the car for myself what the issue is and explain everything, something the dealer rarely does. There have been several times where there was no charge at all on minor issues and they fixed my car and sent me on my way in minutes. This alone leaves me astounded and as a result I am extremely loyal to them and keep coming back. My son does too, and he is a Milwaukee police officer who lives in Milwaukee. He drives all the way down from Milwaukee to get his car only fixed here, which says a lot. The shop does a brisk volume of business so it is best to get your car in early, as walk-in traffic is heavy and goes on all day. People who wait will get faster service than dropoffs, and about the only suggestion for improvement is that they seem to need more mechanics to increase their throughput. About half the time I come in they seem short-handed as they seem to frequently be down to only one or two mechanics. So, allow for extra time and patience here as they don't have the depth of talent that the dealers do, but ask yourself if paying 2x and 3x more for the same repair is worth it just to get your car turned around a little faster. The shop will provide you with free WiFi, but the customer waiting area needs it's own snack and cold beverage vending machine for waiting customers. Unless you want to get harassed into getting work done to your car, STAY AWAY!!! First of all, it shouldn't take an HOUR to get an oil change down with an appointment when there are no other cars and 4 guys working!! They were so busy 'looking' for something to be wrong that they took an hour get my oil change done. Secondly, their manager Bob, WOW!!! I mean what an absolutely unpleasant man to deal with. Talk about belittling me!! He told me to "call my husband" and ASK him if I could get the work done. Then when I told him I just wanted the oil change and would be back at a later time to get the other things done, he literally harassed me saying that my car was going to breakdown THAT NIGHT and that my husband would be pissed off at me because I knew about it and didn't get it fixed!! Seriously?!?! He went on and on while rolling his eyes and using a very harsh tone of voice. I usually never leave reviews because lets face it, things don't always go as planned and it's not always their fault and there is always that one person that is never happy with anybody!! BUT he left such a bad taste in my mouth that I wanted to warn EVERYBODY!! I should have just stuck to my guys at the Honda dealership. What a total JERK!! I brought my truck to this shop to have the exhaust system repaired. Paul, the manager, was very friendly and professional, as were all the other employees I met. The shop was clean and neat too, always a good sign. The technician performing the work was enthusiastic and took pride in his work. They were able to order the eparts in and have the job completed the same day. The pricing for labor was fair but the mark-up on the parts was a bit high. Still, I would go back there again because of their high quality work and professionalism. read more

These guys were great! I went in with a flat tire on a Friday eve after work. They got me right in and diagnosed the problem. They offered to fix it within a half hour for a reasonable price. As it turns out, my husband's friend owns a rim shop and would fix my tire for free if I could make it back to Chicago. They offered to put on my spare tire and send me on my way so I could get my tire repaired at our friend's shop. They did not charge to diagnose the problem or put on the spare. Something has happened to this location since my last visit in early 2013; the service is not the same and workmanship has taken a nosedive. I made an appointment for an oil change at 11:00 AM on a Saturday. The whole idea of making an appointment is to not need to wait an excessive amount of time before getting the process going. I was told they were 15 minutes behind and not to worry; it was close to an hour before even getting in the bay and another hour before the oil change was complete. Also, they left the engine compartment covered in oil; which I did not discover until returning home. It does not appear any attempt was made to correctly clean any items under the hood and left pools of oil on the air filter box flange. This is a new car with the first oil change at 1000 miles to remove the metal particles during the break-in period. This is the last time to ever visit this location, which is a shame since very convenient and had superior service, now just another slop shop. It is time to start changing my own oil again; it seems no one takes pride in good service or workmanship. read more

This was by far the worst experience ever when taking my car in for an oil change. They had the car the entire day and were supposed to change the oil, check tire pressure and rotate the tires. I arrived to pick up my car when they told me to. The car was still in the dock and hadn't been worked on. All four mechanics were out smoking on a break and no one's car was being worked on. After waiting an hour and a half after they told me it would be done, I realized that the tires had not been touched and my tire pressure was still low. I am not even sure they changed the oil. Great Friendly and honest. I have been to other places (non Car X Chains) to get simple oil change done and they found a way to mess that up. Took car to Car x and they checked over everything and let me know what really happened. I have been a cusotmer for years. Got breaks done, brake line, power steering, oil changes and much more and never had a issue. This last visit was for a oil change. My Honda Odyssey side power door got stuck and it wouldn't close and I was desperate. Called this car-x repair nearby and asked if they can at least take a look. It was one hour before their closing time and even though they couldn't promise they can fix it right away they will take a quick look for me. John was the one who answered the phone and I appreciated his kindness and professionalism. I drove my odyssey with the side door half open with the hazard light on and got there before their closing time. Mechanic Gary checked the car and explained to me that one of the power cable was cut and it was wrapped around the door. He simply cut the cable for me which allowed me to close and open the door manually averting the emergent repair. And he said it was no charge even though I knew that I took up their busy time. These people are really good at exploiting people!! My wife had gone in to check a weak battery and they convinced her to change the alternator as well. They charged $800 for the service that should not cost more than $350. The cost of alternator was charged as $425 which 2.5 times the normal price.
