Good food but slow service during lunch. We had a lunch reservation for 5. We wanted to try it for the Houston Restaurant Week. When we walked in they couldn't find our reservation and the girl went to help someone else. The other lady there helped us and found the reservation but she said she couldn't sit 5 only 4 inside. We could sit at the bar or outside in the 100 degree weather. We sat outside near a fan and it was semi shaded. It wouldn't have been bad if it weren't for the humidity and the long periods of time we'd be without help. I got the watermelon appetizer, chicken kale salad and tres leches. The food was all very good even the tres leches even though it came with some weird fruit on the side. I would have given more stars if the service had been more attentive. read more

We want here for our anniversary during houston restaurant weeks and it was spectacular! Their happy hour is a great deal, we got the dozen raw oysters which were smooth and fresh. Highly recommend! The service was on point, just enough care and space. I highly recommend the meats here, we had both the ribs and the pork shank were both cooked extremely well and fall off the bone. For dessert, they were accommodating with my diet restrictions (no gluten or dairy) and had a great sorbet. My husband got the churro and he said they were the best he has had in his life! read more

I really enjoyed my experience and the food here at caracol! This is by far my favorite restaurant of Chef Hugo's that I've had so far and if you go during happy hour, which is daily from 4-7pm, it's pretty reasonable for the budget conscious. We ordered several of the small plates and one large entree to share and loved every bite of each one. CROQUETITAS DE YUCA Y JAIBA (crab fritters) - 5/5 YUM Trio de Quesadillas - 4/5 tasty, but nothing extraordinary Tortita de Langosta (mini lobster roll) -3.5/5 a very good lobster roll that can unfortunately be consumed in one bite because that's how small it was. Ostiones Asados (wood roasted oysters and waiter recommended) - 5/5 I could probably eat 12 of these on my own Tuna Belly tacos - 3/5 probably wouldn't order again, wasn't a huge fan PATO EN MOLE DE HIGO (crispy duck leg, and duck breast) - 4/5 very good but mole wasn't that flavorful. The duck was very fatty which is to be expected but still tasty I will definitely return to try more of their dishes and want to try their El Coco dessert when I'm not so full! read more

Pros: delicious food. Free parking. Con: waiter sucked and brought out the wrong orders, forgot my drink order, etc. We ate until we couldn't eat any more. We came for restaurant week and got more than we bargained for. Happy hour on top of a full meal was very filling and we came back with leftovers. Just check out the photos. I highly do not recommend the raw oysters. I do recommend the cooked oysters. Everything was just delicious. read more

Great hidden gem in the Galleria area. From the moment you enter the restaurant it's amazing. The aroma of the grill cooking steaks is so fragrant you immediately can't wait to try the food. Our waiter's name was Felipe one of the many great waiters at Caracol. He explained the special of the night and the wine list. There are so many great choices of meals at Caracol. Felipe our waiter was always there ensuring we had what ever we needed along with several other waiters and staff. The scallops on a piece of cornbread was to die for. The scallops were melt in your mouth and the cornbread was awesome. The dessert menu was amazing we decided on the EL COCO and it's a chocolate ball that you break open with a little wooden hammer. And the most surprising thing was when we got our check we were expecting to play $300- $400 for the food and the excellent service received and was shocked on how inexpensive Caracol was. I strongly recommend Caracol for a place to take family and friends for excellent service and food. read more

Golden state warriors - champs! First time here, came in w my fam for a Father's Day brunch buffet running you $37+. First off, I must say, most of the things I ate were of quality. A lot of good flavors from a place that serves upscale maybe fushion-ish Mexican food. Second, service was great, can't tell you how many times my waiter folded my napkin or pushed in my chair. Service similar to what you would receive at a steakhouse. Ok onto the food itself. It's a very limited buffet, here's a few of the items: 1. Oysters 2. Some kind of scallops 3. 3 kinds of tamales 4. Couple egg Benedict dishes 5. Bacon 6. Masa w retried beans 7. Bacon wrapped quail 8. Couple other pork options 9. Rice 10. Mac and cheese 11. Prime rib 12. Salsa 13. Various desserts 14. Waffles 15. Lobster bisque 16. Veggie enchilada Tried most of this. Like I said, pretty good quality. I was just disappointed in lack of options for brunch. Would hope for stuff like scrambled eggs, sausage, queso, tacos, fajitas, 5 kinds of enchiladas, tostadas, etc. But since I'm the #1 value rated yelper, I can only give this place an overall 3. Vegas buffet prices but limited options. I've heard this place was good for dinner. It's definitely worth a visit, I just wouldn't come back to brunch. read more

Undoubtedly an extremely inspired and refreshing view point on Mexican culture and food. Hugo is a visionary at work in Houston. I've only been here once but was blown away by the food we had. The mariscos al ajillo was one of the best dishes I've ever had to be frank. Perfectly seasoned and cooked proteins and a bountifully flavored sauce. The charred oysters were good but nothing revolutionary. The salasas and guacamole were stellar. The hh menu was good as well we loved the quesadillas and rice and beans. The only detraction with it being very steep. If you're wanting rice, beans and chips and salsa, expect to add essentially 20$ to your bill. I'll definitely be back for special occasions. read more

Love caracol! Great for Houston restaurant week. The berenjena is SO GOOD - honestly the best item I've had on the vegetarian menu. I had the deconstructed enchiladas as well and they were not as good. Lobster taco is expensive and small so not best bang for buck. My overexposed photos don't do Caracol justice. The flavors are bold, the drinks are strong yet balanced and the service is top notch. Fresh seafood with a Mexican influence. The Whole Roasted Snapper is the way to go. I've been a few times and enjoyed pretty much everything I tried. I highly recommend you try for yourself. Let me know what you think. read more

Interior decor is very nice and fancy, great ambiance. We truly enjoyed every single dish we ordered: The wood-grilled butterflied fish is so perfectly cooked: buttery, tender and flavorful. Great portion too. The oysters were great to share! And the Mariscos al Ajillo is very uniquely seasoned with everything in there: scallops, frog legs, lobster, abalone, clams, mussels, octopus, shrimp etc. The only reason I'm not giving them a 5 star is the service. It started out really good, but then it went down gradually as our server found out we weren't going to order drinks and desserts, and the attitude was very obvious. We understand the reasons, but we still would like to be treated as valued customers regardless and we still tip well. read more

HRW 2018 DINNER $45 - WINE OF MEXICO MENU HAPPY HOUR M-F ( 3-7 PM ) My second year coming to Caracol for Houston Restaurant Week. This time was much more memorable and tasty than my previous experience. There is FREE PARKING in the garage. Just get your ticket validated when you leave. (4/5): OSTIONES EN SU CONCHA: Dozen raw oysters. Fresh and nice size. Decent priced during happy hour. (3/5): OSTIONES ASADOS: Half dozen cooked oysters. Very sweet of the manager to send this to our table since it was some of our first time here. Our table commented that it has an Italian/pasta taste to it? Not sure what is on top. I believe it could have been breadcrumbs which would explain the flavor. (3/5): SOPA DE CHILE POBLANO: Roasted poblano soup. Nothing too special. Used tortilla chips to dip in. The tortilla chips were great. Multicolored corn chips that were thick and crunchy. Made the soup better. (5/5): COSTILLAS A LAS BRAZAS: Surprised how generous the portion was. 3 ribs that were very tender. Nice smoky flavor (4/5): LOMO DE RES: Beef filet was well cooked. Filling entree. The smashed crispy potatoes were soggy but everything else on the plate was good. (3/5): CABALLEROS POBRES: Mexican style french toast. Heavy dessert for an already dense menu. The cherry and orange notes played well. Not a dessert I would get again. The Wine of Mexico menu had the biggest portions. Red meat heavy but very delicous. Great experience. Nice happy hour. Alright, I'm not here to bash anyone or make anyone lose their job- bc let's face it ur working valet for a restaurant ur most likely going anywhere in life. I had a party of 10 at this place, everyone in my party valets. We go and enjoy our meal (barely) 1. Food is overpriced and dishes are overrated - if u want authentic Mexican food there's plenty of other places to go. 2. Service sucks - it's literally ppl who can't speak English. But who I am to judge. 3. Valet is filled wit morons. So I'm leaving this over priced restaurant and they lost my keys lol who cares right? Valet attendant comes and has the audacity to say "I'm sorry for Inconvenience but we lost ur keys can you come back tomorrow" My initial response is "what the fuck? Overal story is valet lost my keys. Ruined my birthday night for my friend and made me waste money on an Uber not only from there but to come back the next day. I wait 24 hours plus for my keys yes I'll give credit - they gave me a free bullshit Sunday buffet meal to me and two other ppl. I waited two hours for my keys to show up. Joshua was barely pleasing and the other GM was nowhere to be found during all my issues. Long story short is if u want over priced Tex mex food. Go somewhere else. Caracol isn't the place to go. read more

I came here for a work lunch. The valet guys were very nice and helpful. They are free and paid by tips. Inside was very nice. Waiters and waitresses are very attentive and make sure your water glass never goes empty. We ordered some guac and salsa with chips for the table. Guac was alright. Nothing super special. They have a really good buffet with a variety of dishes to make it easier to find something you like. The service was really good as well but I was most impressed by the fact that they kept fresh food on the buffet at all times. Beautiful outdoor patio that is ideal for brunch. Definitely a see & be seen type of place. Inside is clean & modern, but at this time of year, the patio is perfect. Service is focused on the presentation factor. They make a point of presenting the food in a good way. I went a couple of weeks ago for brunch. I had the fish tacos & a couple of margarita. My friend had the ceviche & a side. The drinks are a little more creative than the typical margaritas in town. The fish tacos were nicely done. We skipped dessert but the presentation of the churros & hot chocolate is impressive. read more

We came here for a friend's birthday durning Sunday Brunch. There was 5 of us. The food was very good. The live music was nice. The waiters were very on top of their service. The only thing I would say is it felt very basic to have that generic birthday card on the table. For a restaurant of this caliber I expected more, not a free dessert or anything like that. I expected that intimate *touch* that makes it THEE place to go. For example, like telling my friend happybirthday instead of just placing the card on the table. Or, when you send that thank you email for visiting, dont advertise your next event. It just feels insincere. read more

Highly recommend this amazing restaurant with great service & "fancy" atmosphere. Especially on Sundays for their breakfast buffet. They have everything from multiple options of tamales to seafood on deck! The staff is friendly & the waiting are super attentive. This place is high end so be prepared to bring your wallet. We came in starving not knowing what to expect but left content & super full. Their desserts are delicious & fresh. They even have hot "abuelita" chocolate that's "all you can drink" along with churros & conchitas. The food was absolutely amazing! We got ostiones asados, mariscos Al ajillo, papas martajadas, scallops, and this one other appetizer, it was rice and beans wrapped in banana leaf. The appetizer was such a unique concept and tasted fantastic. Everything tasted so so delicious! We also got the churros and the French toast for desserts. Again, everything was just mouthwatering. It's the perfect date night restaurant. The ambience and music is very romantic and up beat. The one thing my husband and I did not appreciate and the reason for 3 stars is because our waiter literally left for a good 30 min to introduce some guy to two girls sitting at a table across from us. It's inappropriate and unprofessional. As a professional on the job, this should not be allowed especially at a high class restaurant as such. It took almost 20 min for us to get our bill. If you haven't been to Caracol you must come have a meal here. I've always had great experiences whether it was for brunch, lunch, happy hour, of the Sunday brunch buffets. They have a garage you can park at and will validate your ticket which is my preference because the valeted cars are still parked out in the sun. The seafood here is fresh and the dishes they have are amazing. The all you can eat Sunday brunch was a nice experience. I usually always come here for Houston Restaurant Week as well. If you have not tried their ceviches I recommend the snapper with the spicy yellow sauce. Their wood grilled oysters are also a hit and you gotta try their spicy palomas to drink! read more

Hugo Ortega's second-best restaurant (after Xochi) in Houston did not disappoint. The coastal Mexican kitchen has delicious ceviches and crudos. Delicious and flavorful food. Great service and ambiance. We each got a homemade spicy ranch water that was to die for. Then we got the guacamole and pork quesadillas on the HH menu. YUM. Came with 3-4 different sauces that were all incredible! Chips are thick but super fresh and crunchy. Then we shared chicken enchiladas and pork flautas. Wow. Very tasty. I don't ever eat rice when it's on my plate but happened to taste my husbands and it was SO good. Can't describe the flavor but it was delicious. It is a very awesome atmosphere. My Flautas where luke warm, so was the side of beans and rice. My friends said their tacos were okay. My friend who got the Caesar Salad, there was no dressing on the salad not was there a side of dressing that came with it. We had to ask for it. I did not have the energy to try to keep wrangling the waiter. If you want to shut the kitchen down early because the day was long I get it. Let the customer know, I get it. I used to wait tables to but I would never give people luke warm food or luke service. The staff seems not to have one anothers back. I did not eat my food, I took my food home to reheat it so I could eat it at the proper temperature. My friend took his salad home because he had more Caesar dressing at home. Left a bad taste in my mouth and very disappointed. The service and food from the last time compared to this visit was night and day. Total miss. $200.00 thrown away. I paid because I could not let my friends waiste there money on someplace I raved about. Maderas is really a small cute spot. It's rare I have bad service when I go out to eat because I am not a difficult customer and I know I am not the only one they are serving. I will wait for good food and sit back and enjoy the atmosphere and my friends until it arrives. I would not put pressure on the staff or the kitchen. Also I will not arrive just before closing and make a resteraunt and it's staff stay open late because I am hungry. I rather come when the staff and the restaurant wants to recieve customers.

Houston has some of the greatest Mexican food in the world, and for me Tex-Mex never compares. A little higher priced and higher end than some of the busier and more well known local chains, but similar in quality and bland taste. The Fajitas are my fave thing on the menu, but nothing to write home about. The reason I took off a star (was going to give 3) is because of some personal issues I have with them. When picking up an order here, you get a notification to say, come to the store. That happens to me when I pick up take out in a lot of places, these days, and when I do, it is either ready, or it takes 5 more min or 10 more min (because they mark it ready when it is not. Generally I'm okay with it, if it's less than 10 min. Candente? 20 min or 30 min. Even when it's not busy. They'll mark orders as ready (to make themselves look efficient I imagine) even when they are completely dead, and then will not actually start cooking the order until you get there to pick it up (I know, because I see people come in at the same time I'm there to pick up, order a similar thing, and 20-30 min theirs and mine comes out at a similar time). So just frustrating, is all. The owner is a Texan guy from Kingwood, he also owns the Pit Room BBQ nearby, which is similarly very fancy and successful. Don't let my bad experiences here put you off from trying it. If you want a list of real Mexican gems (and mostly dirt cheap), ask me, but you won't find any Tex Mex on there at all, to be honest. Just not my thing, in the same way that I think American Chinese take away has nothing on Chinese Chinese, such as Sichuan or Xi'an or Hunan cooking.

There are tons of stuff on different plate all very fresh and warm. Non of them are dry or hard to chew. I have never written a Yelp review, but this experience was the worst I've had in Houston so I feel compelled to write. It was my buddy's bday and I have never been this disappointed at one of Hugo's restaurants!!!! We were seated promptly, which was the highlight of the evening. It took 20 minutes for our server to come to the table. He took our food order, and we also ordered the sangria. He did not show up again until the end. We had to ask another server to refill our water because our server was MIA. We then sat there waiting to order entree's, but again our server never showed up. I had to go to the Host stand to ask for our bill. The host realized how upset we were, and sent a manager over and all he said was, and I quote, "sorry for the wait, the sangria is on us."I will never come back, nor will I recommend this spot to my friends or my clients!! I manage a restaurant in City Centre and my wife is also in the restaurant business, and we were both left bitterly disappointed. I was brought here for a business dinner. I don't know whether I should categorize this restaurant as a seafood restaurant prepared Mexican style or a Mexican restaurant that serves a lot of fish. Either way, the food was very good and unique. I ordered the striped bass served with a wonderful sauce. The bass was good, but not great. The appetizers were excellent, especially the lobster bites as was the toquitos. The brussel sprout kebobs were fabulous and I simply rave about the mushrooms. Others in our party had the steak and loved the preparation and the taste. We all tried the tres leches cake which is absolutely sinful. Wine list was great. Our driver, was prompt and courteous. Food was great and packaged appropriately. Definitely will use this service again. I had tried a few food delivery services prior to trying this for the first time. Online ordering was a simple and seamless process. . However, I wish I had the option to tip the delivery. However, this is not an option. Customers are only allowed to add tip money to the total before the food is delivered. Why would I leave tip money for a service I have yet to receive? I feel bad because the delivery guy was really nice & I on had a couple of dollars on hand. I will definitely recommend to family and friends. Thanks you are awesome! read more

The restaurant is located ideally in the middle of the city. While there, you shall have an opportunity to view the central city park without any distractions. But wait until you get there, let you not be deceived by its location. Everything from the door to their services to their meals is awful. I ordered fish and some chips, which were brought soggy, and as I tried to chew them, I felt my eyes watering up. Not only the staff is professional, but also the servers are extremely responsive and helpful with ever query we have. To be honest, I never expected to find such a fairly-priced menu. Checked out Caracol this afternoon for a lunch meeting. Definitely a nice spot for a business meeting, but not so much for a family gathering. Has a very office-like vibe to it. I had the Tacos De Pescado Al Pastor (which are fish tacos) that was good, but a little bit too salty for my taste. I think the best part of the meal was the churros which were really incredible! Overall, I'd definitely consider it for a meeting in the future but it won't be my first go-to spot. read more

I come here all the time for brunch because I love this place so much and they have great oysters. It is usually topped with mango pico on some of the oysters and they also have oyster shooters as well at the oyster bar. They have a wide selection of desserts and other amazing options for their buffet-style brunch. I would definitely recommend this place. I started my meal off with the ensalada de casa, the salad. I really liked this salad. Then I had the enchiladas which were very good. I love enchiladas and these were amazing. Then I had the churros. I'm usually not a fan of these but they were actually very good and I would recommend getting them. This restaurant had great service and a great atmosphere.
