Pretty good place for a simple burrito. I had a classic burrito with sauteed chicken, rice, refried beans, and Pico de Gallo. Good, filling portions but a little pricey in my opinion. I paid almost $15 for a single burrito with no chips or drinks or anything else. The fillings were also not very evenly distributed - I did go during a busy lunch so perhaps it was just bad timing, but it would have been nice to get a little of each in every bite. We stopped in during first Thursday and since everywhere else was much busier than here. There was a lot of people waiting for food but there was no line to order. We ordered food and got a seat towards the front of the restaurant. The super quesadilla with chicken and spicy salsa is what I went with. Although it wasn't cut like a normal quesadilla as a half circle and cut into triangles it was still very good to my surprise. The shell was nice and crispy and the seasoning and salsa was great. Advice to the owners - this isn't getting lost on locals. We can make or break you. Would rather support you but if you cheap out you won't last. Do better. Strong start and you've cheapened out. At work over the holiday shutdown time, had to find a spot close to work and Mexican food was the consensus. Ordered the carne asada fries... but I think I should have gotten a burrito or something like that. I ordered through one of the food apps for pickup. Both their online menu and the app state the chilaquiles entree includes sour cream. Mine was missing sour cream and by the time I got home, I couldn't go back because they were closed for the evening. I could've used the sour cream because they were spicy for me. I can take some spice (I love Tapatío, but can't eat too much jalapeño). But I could've really used the sour cream to cool the heat. The beans were at least on the sweeter side so that helped. The description also says it comes with avocado. I ordered extra for $1.50 to take advantage of their discount on the app. I got around 1/4 of an avocado so it makes me wonder how much avocado you really get when you don't order extra. Also, there wasn't much queso fresco. It was sparsely shredded over the chips and beans. The scrambled eggs were fine. It's more on the hard-scrambled side. The chips themselves weren't very crunchy, but I understand that it happens since it is fried with salsa. And it could also be due to the thinness of the chips. However, my favorite chilaquiles place has chips that are always crunchy because their chips are thick. I can't comment too much on the service but I will say that the gentleman that gave me my order was nice and answered some questions I had about what's available on the app versus what's actually on their menu. Because I got this to go, I can't comment on the ambiance. The inside looks nice, though. It's a small space but there's enough tables and chairs to accommodate several parties of 4. The perfect place to treat yo self to a quick/cheap breakfast burrito! Their breakfast burritos are a decent size and a steal at $3.99 - especially for being downtown. I used to hit this spot up a bunch when I worked in FiDi (Financial District!). They especially come in handy when you're hungover lol and need a greasy pick-me-up before heading to the office! Taste-wise I would say it's not amazing but they're good enough lol. I prefer my breakfast burrito from here with a bunch of salsa. The mild salsa is a pico de gallo which I love! During non-pandemic times, they would have a salsa bar on the side and you can pour yourself some salsa. These days, you have to ask for it on the side. I'm a #SauceBoss so I want like 5 containers of salsa ideally lol but I feel too greedy to ask for that so I only asked for one the other day and it was definitely not enough! Anyway, I really do think the burrito is bomb when you add salsa or hot sauce- it provides extra flavor and juiciness that really takes the burrito to the next level! I usually get the chorizo burrito, but they have a bunch of different kinds. I always feel good supporting the ladies that work here, so that might be one of the main reasons I like coming here. It feels like a family business. Because of the downtown location, during non-pandemic times, there is often a line in the morning - but it goes by quickly enough. Found a piece of wood in the food (I think it was in the pico but not sure... had to spit everything out of my mouth). Told the cashier there was a piece of wood in it, they happily gave me a refund. Unfortunate that it happened, the food looked good and tasted good (minus the wood) however, I had to return to work empty stomach. Red Pozole with pork! Not on the menu! I was freezing walking around the neighborhood looking for soup around 10am. All the restaurants in the area were closed for a holiday, so I decided to give them a call, luckily they were open. I asked them if they had soup, Pozole to be exact. The lady on the other end said yes, so I hurried to the restaurant for pickup after placing my order with her. When I got there, there were a few people around enjoying breakfast burritos. Small, quiet, but cozy space. After I paid, I scanned the menu and realized the pozole wasn't on the menu! They were able kind enough to whip up a batch for me, no questions asked or anything! Love that! It was a perfect, hot, spicy, herbaceous with lots of pork and hominy that fell off the bone! *drools*. It came with salsa and chips too! Happy they were able to accommodate me. Also, I've had the tacos before for lunch and they were pretty good. I've been meaning to go back for their breakfast burritos! Overall, easy, quick, authentic mexican food. When I used to work in Downtown SF, this was my favorite go-to spot for a morning breakfast burrito. I could go in and order my breakfast burrito at a reasonable price and you see them make it on the spot. It's absolutely delicious. After a few visits to Caramba, their worker remembered me and my order so the second I walk in, my food is already being prepared and all I have to do is just pay. Paired with great customer service, this is an amazing spot to kick off my morning. Occasionally, I do come in during lunch and it is jam packed. So, if you're in a rush to head back to the office, don't count on this place but if you got time, it's worth it. I don't work in downtown SF anymore but I still think about this place and do visit once in a while to get my breakfast burrito fix. read more

If you're in the mood for middling-to-mediocre Mexican and don't mind a line at lunchtime, then Ay! Caramba!... this must be the place for you 'cause I ain't that impressed, gringo. I was wondering why nobody around any of the offices I worked at in the area ever talked about this place. Ever. After all, there aren't that many Mexican places in this part of the FiDi where you can grab and go unless you count the 360 Degrees Burritos in the Galleria. But come on, you can't count that, can you? Granted, I have to give credit to the owners of Caramba for trying to open a Mission-style taqueria on Second, but unfortunately, I just wasn't too impressed with what I had. I thought I should take advantage of the $5.99 Chicken Salad which was admittedly a good price for the portion. The bed of spinach was a nice choice, but then there was the chicken - charred, dried out and hardly edible. It must have been sitting in the warming tray for quite some time to achieve that kind of rubbery texture. The tomato salsa and chip strips did nothing to hide the petty poultry problem (see photo). But hey, of course, I sat there and ate the chips. The people at the other tables didn't seem to have a problem gorging on their burritos and chimichangas, but then again, they looked like they slept in their tattered Macworld T-shirts. FOOD - 2 stars...dried-out chicken is just not cool...the Instagram photo makes it look far more appetizing than it was AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...crowded at lunch and tables don't get bussed too quickly SERVICE - 2.5 stars...they look tired TOTAL - 2 stars...need to satisfy my Mexican cravings elsewhere read more

Seekers of the Mission Street Mexican food experience are likely to encounter a sour note here, since Caramba serves as a "settling" lunch destination more so than a hot spot for cuisine south of the border. Most of the food I've sampled here have been mediocre, leaving me saying "caramba" far more often than "sabrosa!" Service hasn't been real hot during my last few visits, sometimes the lines get a little out of hand and it becomes a mini human conveyor belt of order food-pay-load up on condiments deal. There haven't been too many smiles from behind the counter, though I imagine I'd be the same way if I were serving this food. While I've had pretty decent results with their breakfast burrito, all else has become leftovers / scraps on the plate otherwise. I've had soggy tacos dorados on more than one occasion, a few bland and wet burritos (which are not euphemisms for anything other than messy food), and a super sad string of salads (being healthy never tasted so meh). The prices aren't too terrible, it can get way spendier in this part of SOMA. I wouldn't be surprised if tourists surveying the scene may be mislead to believe this place is a legit Mission burrito spot, but I implore them to head south and don't look back till the street sections become 16th and beyond. When it comes to straight Mission Mexican, Caramba is among the pobrecitos of the bunch. read more
