My husband is Guyanese and moved from Canada to here. His mom used to make him Roti and Curry that he loved. We got the polourie, curry chicken, roti (reg) tamarind balls and some plantain chips. Polourie and the sauce that comes with it - HE LOVED. So did I. Curry Chicken- Loved , I don't like spicy and this was not spicy. So it was perfect for me Roti- he said taste just like his moms and he loves it. It was really good I liked it. Plantain chips- they were ok. Not crispy. But not bad. Tamarind balls- idk bc I don't eat them and he hasn't had them yet. But they look so fresh. The Roti here is so fresh, made to order. My husband don't like trying new places. We lived in Kissimmee and he found Golden Krust and stuck with them when we moved here. I've been wanting to try this place and good thing golden krust didn't have roti. Caribbean Crown Restaurant is holed away next to a barbershop in a generic Tampa strip mall off of Busch Boulevard. But unlike the strip malls of Tampa, this joint is something special. A few tables and a large refrigerator take up a small dining room with a cashier counter. We sit at a four-top table by the wall. The place is quiet and empty on a Thursday afternoon. From 11am-3pm Mondays through Saturdays there's a $5.99 lunch special that's worth more than the price. (There are also $5.99 dinner specials from 4-7pm but I did not come for dinner.) On Thursdays it's beef? There is also a breakfast menu, a vegetarian menu, a lunch and dinner roti menu, and a menu simply called "menu." In addition to food, Caribbean Crown offers fresh, house-made beverages. I get the potato and channa curry roti, an earthy blend of chickpea and potato with a hint of spice, wrapped in pliable, flavorful flatbread. My roti is comfort food out of the ordinary. The mash can be folded into the bread or eaten by the forkful. I try to hold it like a sandwich but it's way too big. Be advised that when trying this dish, you're going to have to employ the fork at some point. There's so much of it! Hard to believe it was only $6.25. My husband has the curry beef with white rice and salad. A good deal, flavorful, but I like my roti better. We also order a side of large and nectarous plantains. Taste matches texture in quality. Must try. On our way out we pick up a red homemade juice. It's sweet with a hint of tang. I don't know if I'll order this or try the homemade ginger drink on my next visit. I have little (and by that I mean no) experience in Caribbean food, but what better way than to jump right in, amirite? Don't be off-put by the plaza this restaurant is in, it is very cozy and clean inside. I've had roti before, so that was my go-to: curry chicken roti. It seems like they make everything fresh and to order. They can make it spicy or not spicy; I was intimidated by ordering anything "spicy" here because I feel that could have ended badly for me. The aroma and flavors of the curry were really great, but the highlight was the roti skin! It was a bit thicker than the roti I have had before, with a nice stretchy quality and just addictive! Even after sitting in my car for 15-20 minutes, the roti was not soggy at all! I wasn't planning on eating the whole thing, but it just happened naturally. My Americanized palette was confused with the bone-in chicken in my roti, but it looks like that's the more authentic way to serve roti. But I will say that I am not used to picking out bone and gristle, let alone crunching on it when I'm trying to enjoy lunch. That being said, it was still tasty despite my American tendencies and preferences! Overall, I would totally come back and try some of their other specials. Omg! Found this place on accident, I was looking for a coffee place around here and for some reason this place was in my search results, I was not mad about it! Authentic West Indian food. I got the curry chicken with dhal roti on the side and it was deeeeelocious! The curry had so much flavor. I even drank the broth when I was done, that's how good it was! Yesterday I was craving roti and curry chicken. There is a popular Jamaican restaurant that I normally would go to but I didn't feel like driving that far. I looked on yelp and saw that Caribbean Crown had fairly good reviews. My son and I went to this restaurant and the lady that took out order was very nice. Once we got back and started eating I was immediately disappointed in the curry and roti. The roti was dry and the curry didn't have any flavor. It was very basic. The fried rice and collards were just as bland. I wasn't able to eat the rest as I was so disappointed. My son is a teenager and will eat almost anything so he finished the rest. I've been coming here for almost three years and I can't believe I'm just getting the opportunity to write a review. This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Tampa! Every time I come I get two doubles (yes it's necessary). I love their sorrel drink. It's very balanced and not overpowering with ginger. I've also had their soursop drink and peanut punch which were nothing short of amazing. Most of the times I come I order a soup which is always yummy. If you don't like your dumplings on the soft side request that in advance. I've had both the chicken and fish soup but I like the fish more. The pholourie and guava cake are a must. They fry their sweet plantains really nice (not too much oil which I love). Some of my favorite entrees are: curry goat, stew chicken (probably my favorite they season it soooo well), and curry shrimp. I respect their endless options of vegan and vegetarian food as well. The potato and channa curry has the right amount of spice and the aloo pie is very well prepared. I never feel heavy after eating their food and it's always an overall great experience. The roti side order and the round pillow shape fried drought (Bake) were so good. They tasted better than those from Indian restaurant. This was my first time trying saltfish and ackee, Very impressive, fish meat wasn't so salty, stirred fried with onion and ackee, wonderful flavor and texture. There were 5-6 kinds of chef special made drink in the beer cooler. They all look foreign to me. The girl behind the counter patiently explained to me what they are and their flavors. The inside looked clean and the service was good. Large selection of food items and drink, affordable prices, delicious food and fast services. I will come back and try other dishes. I like it HOT and this place serves it that way! I love Caribbean food! Well I love all food really. What's great about this place is that it serves almost every dish you can think of. From Jerk chicken, salted fish, red snapper, vegetarian choices to curries all the way to their homemade beverages and pasties. You get a taste of the island life off of bush blvd... Also grabbed a couple Jamaican beef patties for the long ride home. They were even better than the ones we had when we vacationed in Jamaica....so good! Being 100% Trinidadian my expectations are high going in. I've been here quite a couple of times. Their doubles is good. The owners/cooks are Guyanese who's version of Caribbean cooking is not as tasty as Trini food, however, the food will do. It's not the best but better than the rest. I really like this place. The owner is really nice! The portions are large and they are priced very well. I've had the stew chicken and curry chicken and roti and I wasn't disappointed. The only thing that really takes one star is that the plantain has been overcooked every time I've ordered it and the I would have like a little more seasoning of the chicken. The Caribbean crown was good. I would say that the jerk chicken and the fried plantains were my favorite. We were traveling and decided to stop by. It was very busy and they ran out of almost everything. They only had a couple of things from the menu still in the kitchen. This is the first time I had seen a place run out of almost everything. I felt the portion sizes were not big enough. The lady who worked the register was overwhelmed and kept telling people to wait. Most people waited around 45 minutes to get food. Great portions and very well priced, which is really appreciated in a college area. I came here for Lunch with a friend. Very friendly lady was working. I asked for recommendations and she mentioned oxtail which I picked. My friend on the other hand got the lunch special which was chicken stew for 5 bucks! And with the oxtail being one of their higher priced items we could get a feel for the range of quality. My friend loved the side of cabbage. I wasn't impressed, but we both love my rice and beans. Very yummy. The meat of both dishes was generous but nothing amazing. I highly recommend the lunch special if you want a generous price on a home cooked meal.
