Absolutely terrible service, I orderd the "beef brisket". The served me the exact opposite. It was shredded bbq beef, and it was burnt from sitting in a steam table all day. They obviously were not following time as a public health control.It looked like the frozen stuff you get at the grocery store. I pushed the plate of food away from me to the edge of the table, and was obviously not eating it. The server walked by our table 5 times and seemed to be avoiding us when she finally came to check on us my friend was finished eating. The server finally checked on us and I told her what the problem was and sent the food back, when the manager finally came to the table he explained to me that "it was an end of the night thing" implying that the "brisket" is normally burnt at the end of the night. This is mediocre at best. I don't know how they take the flavor out of everything, but they did. It is really expensive for what you get. A little below Bob Evans quality, but with Cheesecake Factory prices. Skip the carrot cake-no spice, no carrot taste. Many people have dinged them on service, but our server was very good. A generally nice spot for dinner and wine before a movie. They have excellent specials, but consistently run out of them, so we find we are often disappointed when we eat there. I havent sampled much of the menu at Carlyle Grill but what I have had has been very good. Looking at the extensive menu I will give the benefit and assume it is all good as well. What brought us there first was probably what brought many...the Dinner and a movie special. We ordered one of their daily specials and got 2 movie tickets for a great price. The atmosphere is pleasing with outdoor seating, we have always gotten good friendly service (though we have heard some say they have experienced the opposite) and the food is solid. Now we often get an appetizer and sit outside...and I must say they have one the best Calamari I have ever had. I've sampled many versions around this great USA and between Stone Fire Bistro's in Brighton and Carlyle Grill's, Id be shocked if any others rival theirs. Check this place out. On a weekday its not busy and its a great starter before catching a flick. *Cost Cutting Secret Alert* Go on a Tuesday and get the Dinner and a movie special. Excellent!!!! The previous night we went to Zingermans Roadhouse and we were disappointed. Tonight we had a wonderful meal and wonderful evening. The service was excellent and the food was superb!!! This was not a great experience. We chose this restaurant because they marketed that they are a "from scratch kitchen". Their web site states: "All our menu items are made to order and can be customized any way you wish." We thought they would be more accommodating for our daughter who has food allergies. Turns out a lot of their items were prepared ahead of time (with butter) and they did not offer any "from scratch" options. Even the plain burger we ordered for her was not very tasty. read more

Sat at the bar, had a gin and tonic (great) bowl of broccoli cheddar soup (fantastic) and a Cobb with avocado subbed instead of bleu cheese. (Very tasty) This place is professional and clean, but the staff is fun and doesn't mind if I sit at the bar in cargo pants and a tshirt. read more

We have dinner at Carlyle's frequently & note that there seems to be a new - excellent - chef. Always predictably good, a recent pork tenderloin special was exceptional, as was pan seared whitefish. We sampled grits, & they were good, though not Paula Deen variety. Salmon was excellent, good quality & cooked. Peanut butter pie was delicious! Always good service. Call ahead to be put on the list, as there care no reservations. Ask for a table up top if you want semi quiet. read more

I ate at Carlyles about 2 years ago and had Parmesan crusted Salmon and couscous, it was wonderful. They have never had that on the menu again unless its once in a great while and have now taken couscous off the menu???? They leave Grits on and take couscous off? Not sure what that's about. The only time I go there now is because our department has our holiday lunch there and they offer a private room for us all. Probably wouldn't just go there for a family meal being the prices are high for what you get. read more

The stars are for the happy hour only. The restaurant is way overpriced, but the happy hour is the best in town. The flatbread pizza with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, and reduced balsamic is excellent, as is the happy hour salad. Great place to meet up with friends and hang out. Recently I had gone to the Carlyle for a private party. When I first walked in I noticed that the place looked really nice. There were several hostesses that greeted us at the door and were nice enough that to show us to the room where the party was. We had told them what time we needed everything to be set up since it was a surprise for someone. I had gotten there a bit later and they still were setting the tables up. We had a pretty good size party. At first we had two waiters. They were pretty slow about getting all of us a drink. When a lot of us had just gotten water. For at least two people we asked for their waiter several times. I and another girl had shared an appetizer (the spinach and artichoke dip) which was just meh. We got our appetizer even before my friend had gotten her water. It just seemed like the wait staff was running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Then they started taking orders. The menu is a bit odd. They have some dishes that I would never put items together. I finally decided on the Pasta Carlyle. The whole time it seemed that it took them a good while to get us more water. Our main course came out pretty quick. Though when they came to the table they were not even sure who had what. It was a bit confusing at first. Looking at the pasta it did not look that great. Was very disappointed in the taste of the pasta. The chicken had tasted like odd and had an odd texture. It honestly tasted like the turkey from a banquet dinner. Then there were barely any mushrooms in it (which was my deciding factor in getting it in the first place). I could go on forever what I did not like about this dish. The rest of the dinner seemed like one of the waiters just disappeared. So we were down to one waiter for like 20 people. I had ran out of water as well as the other people around me. Finally I just go up and went to the waiter who was just standing around and asked for a pitcher of water. Luckily was able to get a pitcher of water. Towards the end it seemed like it took a while to get our bills situated. One of the guest had gotten their bill and was charged for two drinks when unfortunately she did not receive it what so ever. Right before I left I had forgotten that I asked the waiter to store my leftovers in the fridge. I tried to find him but could not. I had saw a manager and told her about my left overs. She seemed distracted and did not even look at me when she talked to me. She was very short in her response. Later talking to the other guest at the party other people had said that she was very rude and short with them as well. Never in my life have I gone to a restaurant that I have had that bad of service and experience with the food and wait staff. read more

I'm really surprised by other reviews of Carlyle Grill. . .we've been there several times and had consistently excellent results. Slight preference for the bar area as we like the atmosphere. Their great happy hour deals make it very crowded early evening. In fact, we've found the restaurant to be busy every time we go, so others besides us seem to really like it! They have amazing burgers. The asian inspired dinner salad is one of the best I've ever had anywhere (including J Alexanders and Cheesecake Factory). Homemade salsa is delicious. Prices are quite reasonable. Overall I find this to be one of the best reasonably priced restaurant on the west side of Ann Arbor. Hmmm.....maybe I shouldn't be saying this so loudly as I don't want it to be more crowded than it already is. . . read more

Disappointing meal, mediocre service. The vegetables with my meal were overcooked and cold; the salmon was greasy and poorly-prepared. My husband's pork was under-seasoned and dry; the polenta was cold and the texture was all wrong. I would expect a higher level of competence from their kitchen, especially when they are charging more than $25 per entree. Went in for Restaurant Week about a month ago and the experience was exceptional. Our server, Brad, was incredibly attentive and the food was delicious. The Manager came to check on us despite the fact that the restaurant was PACKED and genuinely seemed interested in my Husband's bad jokes. We were leery to return after having an unpleasant experience about two years ago but, we are delighted we decided to go back. As a bar area customer....The food is never disappointing, but the service is...the bartenders only acknowledge the "regulars". I have waited and waited and waited as the bartenders just stand and chat with no regard for the ordinary patron. As a customer from the beginning, this has been going on for the past 3 yrs or so. Every time, I say I won't come back, but I give it another try just to be disappointed again. Today might have been the last time. Hosted a rehearsal dinner for 46 here. Used their private dining room in which they provided napkins to match the wedding colors and a customized menu with a choice of three entrees. The service was outstanding. The guests raved about the steak and mushroom ravioli. I had the salmon which was also delicious. Served the dessert we brought in a beautiful manner. Dinner, drinks and serving dessert averaged $46/person. Highly recommended for any group dinner. read more

I have only good things to say about Carlyle. The food and service are extraordinary. I have never had anything there that was less than top-class; cold plates for salad and other cold foods, nice, hot plates for soups and hot entrees. The people who have written less-than-stellar reviews must have been on some other planet. The Carlyle here on Planet Earth is a great bargain for excellent food, decor and service. The thought and effort that their (real) Chef has invested shine through. People who need to have their food in a jiffy can just go to the McDonald's drive-through window, where they probably belonged in the first place. Would for sure go again! We have been here twice and both times were very busy nights but seating was plentiful and we were seated immediately. I had the chicken sandwich with a side of broccoli and had only one complaint as my broccoli was barely steamed and pretty raw tasting. The sandwich was very good however and had a lot of flavor. My husband ordered the margherita pizza with a caesar salad and both were delicious. Service was great as well as atmosphere! read more

WAY OVERPRICED for Mediocre food. This is the first time I've ever written a review good or bad. JUST had too!! About fell off my chair when I looked at the prices of the steaks. NO TBONE, NO PORTERHOUSE!! Food at Golden Coral is better. Will go to Lonestar next time I want a steak. Everything was generic in taste. Complained about hair and fuzz that was cooked right in theese super thin fries they serve you that all you can taste is the grease they fry them in and they gave me a half slab of ribs that I threw away they were so flavorless and generic tasting. The assistant manager does a nice cover up job for the bad servcice and mediocre food but she's just earning her paycheck. Can tell it's about as fake as a used car salesman. We are not picky people and can give a lot of leadway but this place takes the cake. (Which is all they offered at first for a discount LMAO!!) I guarantee the place won't be in buisiness in 5 years. In the meantime save your money. It wasn't even worth the half price we still ended up paying. Wish I could rate them at half or quarter of a star. Nice Idea to the owner but next time try having a chef who knows what he's doing come up with a menu if you want to be that high end of a place. read more

I've been here multiple times but my last experience was by far the best. Our waitress(who's name I've unfortunately forgotten) was extremely personable and quick. We ordered an appetizer and then our entrees. The entrees actually came out before the appetizer did(which was fine because we were starving).We then said something to our waitress who had forgotten to bring it out. She was extremely polite and apologetic about it even though our entrees came out very fast. She spoke with the manager and they offered us free dessert and the appetizer for free. We ended up not getting a dessert and they gave us the appetizer for free and a 25% discount after the manager personally came out and delivered the appetizer to us and apologized again. I was a waiter for a summer when I was in college, it's a tough gig and out waitress couldn't have handled it better along with the management. We were very impressed. read more

We have been to this restaurant a couple of times before and it was just okay. My husband likes it there, my meals have been okay, but our children have never liked the food or atmosphere at Carlyle. We went to an early dinner (5pm) on a holiday and were told it would be an hour wait (there was no one else waiting!) but they ended up seating us in 3 minutes. However, the balsamic vinagrette on my salad was the worst ever. How can you mess up such a basic dressing? It was drenched in garlic and was crazy spicy - bleh. Then, one of my children ordered the noodles with pasta sauce - she could barely eat it because the marinara sauce was so spicy...so we asked for noodles with butter. The server brought her replacement and it had alfredo sauce on it instead of butter. We weren't about to tell her about the mistake because my daughter didn't need 3 noodle dishes in front of her. Additionally, the our waitress seemed cold. All in all, it could have been a lot better and we don't plan on returning. read more
