Very disappointed with my experience at the CarMax Gaithersburg location on Shady Grove Road. I completed an online appraisal for my vehicle, which had been in an accident, and received an offer of $1,500. Based on that offer, I paid almost $200 to have my car towed to their location. Once I arrived, I was told they needed to perform another appraisal. After reviewing the vehicle, they reduced the offer to only $200. It was very frustrating to spend money towing my car there based on their original offer, only to receive a drastically lower amount. The situation became even more upsetting when they kept my vehicle and promised to have it towed first thing the next morning. Instead, I had to call repeatedly throughout the day before they finally returned it. The manager Justin was sarcastic, and unprofessional. This experience caused me unnecessary stress, wasted my time, and cost me money. I would not recommend this location and encourage others to be cautious before relying on an online appraisal. It took roughly 1 1/2 hours to complete everything before I was out the door. Unfortunately that car experienced some mechanical issues within their ten day guarantee so swapped it out for another vehicle on the seventh day. I've had good experiences here overall across two purchases and one sale. Last summer, I bought a convertible that was hard to find here in the DC area, so I had it shipped through the Carmax network from a few states away. I knew going in that I would pay more at Carmax than at some other dealerships, but in the end, the extra cost (the shipping fee plus Carmax just being pricier in general) was worth it. My salesman, Marcus, was super nice and chill. I didn't feel rushed or pressured at all. The sales staff let me take a longer test drive than the normally allowed 20 min, and I appreciated their flexibility. After all, if I'm going to drop thousands of dollars on a vehicle, I need sufficient time to test drive it, visually inspect it, etc. I also appreciate the fact that Marcus and the crew did NOT drill license plate holes in my front bumper (the state my car shipped from does not require a front tag). He knew the car was looking sharp, and he guessed correctly that I would want to avoid drilling holes if possible (I found a magnet solution). He handed me my front tag as well as an order for Carmax tag installation if I changed my mind. That is good customer service. Now to the reason why I don't regret having paid a bit more at Carmax. My car ended up having two issues: an engine emissions issue (check engine alert) that required Carmax to update a couple of parts, and a paint bubble on the rear quarter panel. I'm thankful that I noticed both issues within the 90-day warranty period. For the paint issue, I brought the car back in, a service manager looked at it, and he said right away they'd cover the repair (either through a repair shop of their choosing or of my choosing). Again, I appreciated the flexibility. I was a little surprised they didn't write up paperwork promising to cover the repair, but sure enough, at the designated time, my chosen repair shop called the service manager, and the service manager made the payment. How about that? A handshake deal that came through. But seriously, Carmax, the paperwork route is the better one. Some pro tips: Make an appointment online. Unless it's a slow day like a Monday, do not just stroll in and expect quick service. I made two appointments (for two separate test drives), and a salesman greeted me within minutes of my arrival each time. Another tip: take longer than 20 minutes for your test drive if needed. They are flexible (and they do not ride with you during the test drive). I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because it's a bit disappointing to have to bring a new (to me) car in twice for repairs, but they did live up to their warranty. I'm also just a tad bitter that they offered me a low price for a trade-in/sale a few years ago, but, hey, I didn't have to take their offer. All in all, I would not hesitate to shop here again. You might pay a bit more, but at least you get a 90-day warranty. Some other local dealerships offer nothing after you drive off the lot. My only other piece of advice (not Carmax-related) is to shop Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) if possible. I went to Carmax to get my car appraised. The process was quick and easy. I had a wonderful service staff person. It took about 30 minutes. My issues were with actual appraisal. I know my car is not in perfect condition. But, some of the things they wrote down seemed like they were really stretching. I was told that my roof had some hail damage. Even with us both looking at the car,no one could see any damage. I was told that they do this, so the appraisal is less money. I can not say this for sure, but I was disappointed in the results. Pro: big Parking lot, vending machine, outside table. Con: long wait time. Came here on a Sunday to sell the car and we already had the carmax paper for price. After checking in it took about 20 minutes for the car to be taken into the garage and the license plate to be removed. We saw the staff member place the plates with the paper work and it sat on the computer area. We had to wait another 50 minutes to be called and sign the paper. All in all, wait time here is ridiculous and you have some staff members standing around doing nothing. I wouldn't recommend anyone come here but they are the only carmax here in Montgomery county so it sad. read more

I had an interesting experience. I ordered a vehicle from cross country, and when it arrived and was inspected, it was discovered that it was not as advertised. So this would be a strike against Carmax. However, this review is for the Gaithersburg location. It's frustrated as I was, they handled me with care. Yet, a sales rep, took it upon herself to follow my replacement vehicle order. The manager, despite my frustration, and probably with Yet's persistence, offered some compensation. Another two star review here, which is better than the many one-star reviews. I am writing this review to warn others about CarMax Gaithersburg. I purchased a relatively new German car with less than 10,000 miles on it. After driving it for several days and to another city, we got an alert on the dashboard. Turns out, there was a coolant leak in our new car. We did not own the car CLOSE to the 90-day warranty. When I called Carmax, the first representative told me it would take five days to make an appointment to get this fixed back in Maryland. We were in Boston at the time! A coolant leak can basically blow up your car, but the snide and snarky Carmax assistant did not care. After a lot of phone calls and a few tears, we were finally told to bring the car IMMEDIATELY to an Audi dealership since the situation was dangerous Guess what?! Audi rolled out the red carpet, fixed everything for free, and informed me that I had more than two years of Audi Care on my basically new car! When I bought the car from CarMax, I was told I had NO coverage remaining from Audi, so I purchased CarMax's extended warranty for $40 a month for the entire length of my car loan. This is fraud. I had no luck with phone calls trying to get CarMax to resolve this. Finally I went to Carmax Gaithersburg in person with my documentation and had to deal with the worst snarky customer service person ever who smirked at me and told me several times that he was one of four managers so I could not speak to anyone else. He refused to cancel the extended warranty payments - I'm not sure if that is legal - and wanted to give me a partial check to reimburse me. I know we all want/need used cars. It's a tough time to get a car! I'm hoping my post will help others if they need to deal with CarMax, which was once a reputable business but is really scummy now. Do not trust anything. The salespeople have no training and are desperate to churn sales. Please check everything. Warranty. Past owners. Past accidents. My car literally has mold spots on the back number since I guess it was stored in a Florida garage. Oh! If your car is listed as perfect and then arrives with dents, that's your problem. However, I wasn't certain the online questionnaire was detailed enough to capture my car's cosmetic condition so I followed up with an in-person visit to confirm the quote. There were 50+ employees and customers inside this large CarMax Gaithersburg location and a clear information desk in the center with no line. When I explained my situation and asked if he could confirm the online CarMax quote, the receptionist cheerfully directed me to a lady at a table who could help. After sharing my quote details and leaving my keys, the lady warmly asked me to sit at the lounge and watch some TV or grab some free coffee for 30-40 minutes while a technician confirmed my quote. 20 minutes later, the lady came to find me and handed me an official inspection paper confirming my online quote, with notes that they factored in my car's cosmetic condition. Easy! One week later ready to sell my car, I come back to the busy but oddly relaxing CarMax Gaithersburg. The information desk pointed me to the same friendly lady who I saw last time. I knew the drill, dropped off my quote and keys, and sat in the lounge. While waiting, I see my car being taken into the back for diagnostics. 30 minutes later, a different lady calls for me, asks me to sign 2 forms, patiently waits for my co-owner to come over, hands me a check for the agreed-upon amount, and I'm out the door. I cashed the check later without a hitch. Very easy! This was a night-and-day experience compared to what I encountered at the Carvana down the street. Then went through 2 weeks of quality control. So amazingly on the 29th day. I got a text saying the vehicle was ready for me to come see. I purchased my car from CarMax on Friday and the bumper came off on Saturday. I dud the express pick up on Thursday. They made certain I sent all the necessary documents to finalize things. When I arrived at CarMax to pick up my car I waited over an hour. Next, I finally get my vehicle and it smelled like mold. It was late and I had the kids with me I wanted to go. The next morning I'm driving to work and the bumper cones off on the highway. It reveals underbody damage and the right rotor is froze causing smoke. Three days ago, they cashed the check that was supposedly voided. Every time I call, the staff is clueless, claiming they're "processing the refund" and escalating the issue, but nothing has been resolved over a month later. The business office is incredibly slow, and no one ever picks up the phone. Terrible management and poor administrative execution. I should've known better. This is the worst Carmax I have ever dealt with! My experience with Carmax overall has been a good one however this location is horrible! They never pick up their phone and when I made the 40min drive because I HAD to speak with someone, I saw that they'd taken the phone off the hook. The service department told me that they were too busy to look at my car but they only had two appointments and the staff was just goofing off with each other while continuing to ignore phone calls. Brought car for estimate to sell. They required an additional document that the lien was paid off (even though it was financed through Car Max). Had to order the form, which arrived about 10 days later in the mail. Literally did not drive the car at all in those 10 days. The second estimate was $500 less. They said the original estimator wasn't as accurate and the second estimator found some more damage. I asked them to honor the original estimate, especially since the car did not move in the approx 10 days. They declined to honor their own original estimate. Also said it was all because of the market, as if they received not profit from the deal. Feels very underhanded. Definitely will not be doing business here in the future. read more

I found a car on line in another state and ordered the transfer to Gaithersburg location. Prior to confirming the order, I chatted on line with Carmax agent who answered my questions. He wrote to me that he checked with the shop and the car doesn't have spots or any visible damages or smoke smell. Carmax website says the cars are cleaned and disinfected. I had to wait for my car almost for a months. The last ten days it was sitting in Gaithersburg with online status " your car is being prepared". When I picked the car..... I have no idea what they were preparing. The car was dusty and DIRTY inside , nobody cleaned it from the previous owner, they didn't even vacuum the food cramps or wiped food spots. I had to run through several cars before I found one that was even halfway decent. After I drove it off the lot there was some vibration which went away after I inflated the tires which CARMAX left under inflated which caused a vibration. My final complaint is that I'm getting letters now from the motor vehicle administration on why I don't have insurance on a car that I had returned to CARMAX. CARMAX never did the proper paperwork to close that account out because I happen to have the bad luck of a lazy person over there. Should be zero stars-why we can't submit zero ratings is beyond me. I Bought a car from the Gaithersburg location after going to other locations where qebsote said cars were on the lot but were not. Same thing happened at Gaithersburg but we were finally able to find something to settle for as we needed a car badly. Drove it for two weeks and decided it was suitable (discovered the oil was virtually empty about 5 days into ownership and had to wonder what else was wrong if they didn't even check the oil, I get buy as is but seriously?!). I returned the car on October 16th. Their return policy says you'll receive refund check withing 10 to 14 business days. After 18 business days I finally called to follow up giving them the benefit of the doubt that usps might very well have delayed receipt of check. I spoke to rhe business office manager who told me they didn't know the status because home.offoce dealt with refunds. She said she would call.me back this past Monday to update. Today is Friday and I spent an hour getting bounced around their bs phone system but finally got to someone at home office. After being put on hold several times I was finally told that she could not find any notation of any refund at all. She told me she would create a new case today and some will follow up in 24 to 48 hours which is really in 3 to 4 days since they're not in the office over the weekend. I told the representative today as I had a week ago told the business office manager that I expected an interest payment added to the overall since they have been holding my 16,500 for a month now. No other instance on the planet would you return something and jot get your money back immediately. Their policy clearly stated 10 to 14 days so I clearly didn't have a choice. But they never even processed the refund! The business office manage really didn't seem to care, was just following a scripted response sheet. The home office person at least seemed to sound like she cared a little but again mostly was following a script. Buyer beware on carmax everyone! I've bought and sold a ton of cars via CarMax, thought I bought and sold my last cars via Carvana. I've gone here twice so far and not been impressed. Sales people are OK. Lot and selection are OK. Getting in and out for test drives a little hard with packed parking lot. I came here to try a car and figure out if it's something that I want to buy. Prices are still high from inflation and pandemic shortage. I sold my last car about 8 months ago for 50% more than I bought it for a year and a half earlier. It was PHEV and prices were going insane b/c of gas prices and I was/still am working from home - though that is about to change, hence the car shopping. Had a good experience at this location previously but after what happened yesterday evening, will not be returning. Came in for a test drive and had made an appointment. The guy at the front had a rude demeanor from the get-go but we shrugged it off, and when we specified our reason for stopping by, he told us it would take 15-20 min to get the test car ready and that we'd receive a phone call. He told us we can browse the lot while waiting, so we did just that. It was pretty cold outside, but we managed to pass half an hour looking through the lot. We even found the test car and checked it out before heading back in. We hadn't received a phone call yet but we noticed the guy from earlier was lounging around with another worker at the desk by the entrance. In our previous experiences, it was usually the employee who meets us at the front (who I guess gets assigned to help you) who goes to the lot to retrieve the test car and drive it out to the front of the building. But not this time; this guy did not give a damn and paid no care to us clearly waiting on him. My gf approached him while I went to use the restroom, and he was chatting away with other employees. She asked why we haven't received a call yet and for possible updates (since it was clear this guy wasn't trying to help with the process). This guy (never got his name) proceeded to give a snide comment that the 15-20 min wait is referring to the call and that he "can't speak on behalf of his colleagues" as to why the test car wasn't being prepared yet. Sure, you can't speak on their behalf, but maybe you can speak TO THEM to get the process going, or maybe you can get the car yourself if you stopped chatting with your colleagues about non-work related matters. My gf told him she didn't appreciate his attitude, but the employee who was chatting this guy up interjected, repeating several times that he "is the manager" and that they were talking about "business". OK that's fine, but this manager (an older black man), who wasn't wearing a name tag and conveniently didn't introduce himself by name but by his authority status, told my gf that he "would not tolerate her being disrespectful to his employees" and to go "sit down or talk to him in his office". Mind you, she only said that she didn't appreciate his attitude, so why is it a problem for the manager that customers articulate that we aren't satisfied with the service (or utter lack thereof) being provided by the employee? No one was cursing or shouting, but this manager got triggered over her voicing her opinion about this employee's obvious rudeness. She acknowledged the manager and stated that her frustration wasn't towards him, so she asked if he could let her explain what the issue was. This "manager" proceeds by cutting her off and talking over her when she was asking him to calmly listen to the whole situation and not blindly defend his employees when the employee was blatantly being snarky and disrespectful. Managers are expected to deescalate situations, but in this case, this manager was quick to do the very opposite and vilify her. She said she thinks his approach is wrong for immediately siding with the rude employee and although she wasn't intending to get a a manager involved over a small attitude issue like this, she was shocked that this manager verbally ambushed her at the first chance he had. There was no open dialogue; only a power trip from a man who enables his employees to be pricks to customers without any recourse. The manager completely lost it after she voiced disagreeing with his approach, and he basically gave us a if-you-don't-like-my-way-of-doing-things-then-fuck-off disposition. Butthurt man with fragile pride who can't handle even the slightest of criticism. So we said, "OK no need to worry about the test drive. We won't be doing it after all," and this manager decided to be haughty and told us "GOOD, Leave." How unprofessional and tactless. He probably felt like he was being a badass standing up for his employee, but he ended up just being an asshole. What low quality service from a man with abysmal managing abilities. I wish we had gotten their names, that's a whole other ordeal. We called the Gaithersburg CarMax line and they directed us to the business office, where the phone rang incessantly with no one ever picking up. We know not all of the workers there are like this, but unfortunately, we drew the short end of the stick yesterday and ended up dealing with Rude and Ruder. I recently sold my 2016 Volkswagen Passat as they offered me a great price for it. I decided to trade the Passat for a VW Altrack. Process took about 1.5 half with appraisal and financing. The only issue I had with the car was that the battery that was in the Altrack died on me on 5/22/21when I was on 270 the other day. So I had to take my car to king Volkswagen to get a new battery which cost me $228 dollars. So I feel I should be reimbursed for that. They should at least run battery test on cars before selling them. I had a an auto transferred from Georgia to Gaithersburg. It was a 2022 ford Mustang Ecoboost Premiumn MANUAL TRANSMISSION convertible w/ 10000 miles on it. I was notified when the car was be shipped here. I received NO notification since. I started calling the dealership about a week after my notification and received the same automated message. 'We see you had a car transferred to us', 'it is being prepare for sale, we will notify you when it is ready'. I got that same message every time I called. I did not have an extension # and therefore could not reach anyone in customer relations I finally reached a remote salesman. He kept me on hold for 46 minutes. I finally got the answer that the car was sold! (probably internally), I'll never find out. A 'sales supervisor' reached out later and said they tried to call and text me 3 times. before they sold it to someone else. I have no messages on either my land line or cell phone, or my e-mail. They have ALL my contact information, we did purchased a car and sold a car to them in mid May 2023. I believe when someone saw this car at Gaithersburg , they thought it was a good deal, (like new) and snatched it up. They made a haphazard attempt to reach me to cover their tracks and snatched it away from me. They never called and said 'sorry' or offered to refund my fee for having it transferred If I had not been persistent I probably would not have received my $99 credit . Why would a customer have a car transferred from Georgia and not go to the dealership to see it? This was a completely shady deal. I will tell everyone I know never to deal w/ CARMAX Gaithersburg.
