I had a an auto transferred from Georgia to Gaithersburg. It was a 2022 ford Mustang Ecoboost Premiumn MANUAL TRANSMISSION convertible w/ 10000 miles on it. I was notified when the car was be shipped here. I received NO notification since. I started calling the dealership about a week after my notification and received the same automated message. 'We see you had a car transferred to us', 'it is being prepare for sale, we will notify you when it is ready'. I got that same message every time I called. I did not have an extension # and therefore could not reach anyone in customer relations I finally reached a remote salesman. He kept me on hold for 46 minutes. I finally got the answer that the car was sold! (probably internally), I'll never find out. A 'sales supervisor' reached out later and said they tried to call and text me 3 times. before they sold it to someone else. I have no messages on either my land line or cell phone, or my e-mail. They have ALL my contact information, we did purchased a car and sold a car to them in mid May 2023. I believe when someone saw this car at Gaithersburg , they thought it was a good deal, (like new) and snatched it up. They made a haphazard attempt to reach me to cover their tracks and snatched it away from me. They never called and said 'sorry' or offered to refund my fee for having it transferred If I had not been persistent I probably would not have received my $99 credit . Why would a customer have a car transferred from Georgia and not go to the dealership to see it? This was a completely shady deal. I will tell everyone I know never to deal w/ CARMAX Gaithersburg. I bought a car a year ago . Amazing. I love my car and the sale advisor was really nice. I forgot his name but he really helped me with the car buying. No rushing. He let me try out about 5/6 different types of cars and wasn't pushy . Unfortunately today, my experience was different. My boyfriend is in the look for a new car and we randomly decided to just check the cars out since I had an amazing service last time. We walked in and checked out but the gentleman who was helping us this time wasn't as nice. We walked in looking for a different types of cars, not knowing exactly which one. Wanted to test drive it and was told that it didn't make sense to test drive different cars other than the one my boyfriend asked for because they're based on commission. First off, we have to test drive different cars to feel and make sure that's what we want. Second, I work retail and I for sure wouldn't tell that to my clients. Even though I work for commission , I wouldn't make my client feel bad. I don't want to sound like a Karen but I will for sure go somewhere else unless I know the client advisor who sold my car last year is there. Then I'll come back. read more

The vehicle we were told we would test drive was actually located in Michigan. The person we spoke with to confirm the appointment could have told us this, but did not. They told us we could only reserve one vehicle at a time for a... let's say 10 minute drive?... but that we would need to bring our own insurance, which makes no sense. The attendant we spoke with was extremely distasteful, downsplaining the reservation policy and definitely not making any effort to assist us in finding a vehicle that suited our criteria. The lot has vast space, suitable for hundreds of vehicles. Overall, we both didn't find the explanations persuasive, the staff helpful, or the prices and offerings suitable. If I had ten thumbs, nine and a half of them would point down. THIS is exemplary of the changes in the United States that many find extremely distasteful. read more

We didn't know what to expect going in. I was unfamiliar with CarMax and it's process/policies. I have friends in the car dealer business. CarMax beat their offer on my trade in, they beat my bank on interest rates for the 48 month loan and had a much larger inventory to choose from. Gordon (in Rockville, MD) was super helpful and responsive. We had an issue (alignment) with a car we were interested in and they ordered parts and fixed the issue without it costing us a penny before we bought the vehicle. They even gave us a wonderful "loaner" car to use while they did the repair. I would definitely recommend CarMax for your next used car purchase. read more

Wow, so I can't believe that I got treated worse at Carmax than at a shady dealership. I signed in at the front desk to do a quick test drive and waited for about 20-30 minutes. Then the sales rep (Tony or Thomas?) told me not to bother with the test drive because I had no intention of purchasing the vehicle that day. There were 3-4 associates just lounging around so it wasn't too busy. I would be okay with it if I was told upfront that they were too busy before making me wait half an hour. While I think it's one of the better places to buy a used car, you are still dealing with shady salesmen and it's still a business looking to move you through quickly, get their money, and sell the next car. First, the good stuff - you pay a premium buying a used car at CarMax but I believe it is worth it. Most used car dealers will sell you the car on the lot, as-is, and that's all you are told to expect from a used vehicle. With CarMax, they will work with you to get the car in the best condition possible to make you happy with your purchase. That's great. I had a lot more very friendly "we'll take care or it" responses here than even when visiting dealers for new car purchases. Second, my sales rep Joel was an *ss. Clearly his goal was to spend as little time as possible with me, talked the "sure anything you want" game, but didn't deliver on it at all. There were several times I was supposed to hear my car was back from shipment, inspection or service and he wouldn't tell me. I'd show up on my own and find it sitting in the lot. I had some pre-sales service items that I was told would be taken care of, but when I followed up with him he'd just say, "no problem, they'll take care of it," but refused to pass on specific items that were agreed to. In the end, at least one item I was told would be addressed was never taken care of prior to sale or in the 30 days after sale. They seem to wear you down knowing that ultimately, the inconvenience of bringing a car in for service will get the problem out of their hands after the 5 day return or 30 day fix period has expired. We all have careers and families and let's face it, can't spend our time running back and forth to CarMax. My 30 day service was met with similar results. The service department was very friendly and makes good promises. However, after the fact I would find the service performed by their vendors to be sub-par. Clearly they are moving cars through quickly at the lowest repair cost possible. I had an OEM windshield replaced with a non-OEM windshield, I had a part broken and covered up by the body shop, I found an item I was told would be looked at, ignored, and I don't have confidence that the repairs made will stand the test of time. They did take care of some large items for me, without argument, that I was appreciative of. My advice is that as you are quickly being told, "no problem," you have to be VERY SPECIFIC on what they are repairing, how they are repairing it, and put it in writing. If it isn't typed on the printed form, it doesn't count. That's true prior to sale also. They know once you find the car you love, it's practically sold. Don't be in a rush, Don't hand over $1 until the car is where you want it, because once you sign the papers the 5-day/30-day timer starts and it goes quickly. Like any sales arrangement, your best negotiation tactic is to be willing to walk away. If you go in needing a car immediately and needing service quickly, you may find that your expectations were not met when you finally have the time to examine what you paid for. read more

This place is a disaster. Tried to charge my down payment because they only allow debit up to $2k or cash/check but for whatever reason They couldn't do it the charge card. Came back from 2 hour drive one way with cash. They failed to mark the $7000 cash down to USAA so that was an issue. Not sure how that was overlooked. Then, when tags were getting ready to expire I tried to find out why no tags or title came to me yet, they never sent title to MVA so now we have to wait for that and unable to drive car with expired tags. They aren't rushing the work either despite not doing it the first time. Word to the wise, avoid this location and use Frederick where the staff is pleasant, thorough and no follow up is needed. Follow up, now they can't find the transaction and no title in the system. read more

Bottom line: this is where you go to sell your car when you don't have the time or patience to sell it on your own. Going into it, you HAVE to know they're not going to give you what your car is worth, because then they obviously wouldn't make a profit. So yeah, I knew beforehand that I wasn't going to get the max blue book value for my car. (I was just selling it, no trade-in.) Blue book value ranged from $1600-$2500; my car was a fully functional 2009 Hyundai Sonata with barely over 100k miles and some noticeable but fixable scrapes on the exterior. I was expecting at least somewhere in the $1800-$2000 range for it. I got $1200. Cathy was great to work with and seemed like a good person, but she was not up for any negotiations. Maybe she would've been had I been trading in. Overall, I don't recommend. The only reason I came here is because I didn't have the time, energy or knowledge to sell it myself. Convenience comes with a price. If you sell your car here, they're going to rip you off. If you're fine with that, then go for it. read more

I needed a new SUV quickly and this was the first place I went. Since my vehicle need arose unexpectedly, I had neither the time nor the patience to deal with the haggling or pressure from traditional dealerships. Plus, Carmax has their inventory posted online, so when I arrived, I knew exactly what I was looking for. I was paired with Jacobo (who was new) and his manager. I showed them my short list of requirements, as well as the vehicle that I wished to test drive. After a quick review of my requirements, they grabbed the keys to the vehicle and we were off. Jacobo and his manager were chatting with me as I did the (very short) test drive. Despite the conversation, I could hear that something was clearly wrong with the vehicle. First, it was having an audibly difficult time shifting gears. For most of the test drive, the truck whined very loudly as it struggled to get out of first gear. They two sales guys just kept right on talking as if nothing was wrong, even after I mentioned the whining. Second, this truck was in desperate need of new brakes (and possibly new rotors), which I discovered as we nosily ground to a halt. The test drive was literally around the block, and it was hardly enough time to really get a feel for how the vehicle performs. And having a sales rep (or two) in the car talking your ears off doesn't really give you the opportunity to get comfortable with the vehicle or clearly hear anything that might be wrong with it. While the sales reps were nice enough, I was not pleased that Carmax would have a vehicle in such poor condition on the market to be sold. Moreover, the 10-minute supervised test drive made me feel like they might have something to hide. My experience here made me leery of purchasing a vehicle from Carmax at all, and as a result, I decided to take my search elsewhere. read more

Went to have my car appraised and sold and the entire process took an achingly long 3.5 hours. This is after a Tanya had informed of a much shorter time for the entire process over the phone (prior to my showing up at CarMax). There were two gentlemen who spoke to me and helped with the process who were very nice (I don't recall their names). However, a Greg in the business office was continuously rude and had an attitude the entire time I was speaking with him. He also questioned a form that had been provided by CarMax themselves. She asked me why I was Selling my truck so I told her to get an appraisal first. Then I told her I was going to buy at another dealer . We had a horrible experience at this carmax. We came in looking for a truck, we found one online and it was transferred to this location. We received a call from the sales associate letting us know that the truck had arrived. We came in for a test drive and we decided to move forward with the purchase which went smooth with the exception of the finance lady which had a very nasty attitude. We drove the truck home we took it for inspection at our local GMC dealership, long story short the truck is rusted, the whole frame is rusted very bad, we are talking about a 2015 vehicle, according to the tech that inspected the vehicle, the rust they discovered is typical on a car/truck that has been on the road for 20+ years. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place, I believe the sale of that truck was unethical. read more

I just sold my old car here and the process was about as painless as I can imagine. They messed up our appointment at first, but the customer service recovered well and they offered a fair price. I made an appointment for 10a on MLK day and showed up a few minutes before. It was bitterly cold and they didn't open the doors until 10a, so we just waited outside in the warm car until they officially opened. Once inside, I gave them the keys to the old car and they said they'd do an inspection, get us an appraisal and get back to us in 40 minutes to an hour. So, we went out to run a few other errands in our other car and came back 55 minutes later to find the car hadn't been inspected yet and, in fact, hadn't even been entered into their computer system until 10 minutes ago. To their credit, they then bumped us to the front of the line and had the car inspected in about half an hour. They offered us what we thought was a fair price for the car and we sold it in another half hour. Altogether, we were able to get in, get the car inspected, sell it, and leave with a check in about two hours. It's really hard to complain about that. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking to sell their old car. read more

We purchased a 2011 BMW there yesterday and wrote a check for it. We drove it straight to a mechanic friend, who had cautioned us that CarMax cars sometimes have hidden problems. Sure enough, our mechanic found over $2,500 worth of issues with the car, including power steering problems, and a leaking differential seal that had been well cleaned, probably to hide the problem from an unsuspecting buyer. We went back to CarMax to see if they would fix it. They told us they couldn't even look at the car until Monday and that it might take "quite a while" to repair it. We decided at that point to return the car and were told we could expect a refund in 7-10 days. Not acceptable, considering our check hadn't cleared yet. We had to stop payment on the check. (The manager advised us not to, but their paperwork actually says a customer can, and they will refund the stop payment fee.) TL;DR: CarMax sold us a defective car and hassled us over getting our money back. read more

Start to finish, a phenomenal, well-organized experience--dare I say selling and buying here were almost fun! Abib helped me sell my former car and then buy something new-to-me. The trade-in was more than fair and absolutely painless, which was a lovely surprise. Buying was also a great experience. The car I wanted was in Texas. It was transferred to this location in just more than than a week and Abib called to let me know it was in. I went the next night and he had it running, warmed up, and underneath a large light so I could see everything. We had a great test drive and he answered all my questions. Sealing the deal was painless--they even put on regular license plates and saved me the return trip I would have had with temp tags. And at the end, the car was shined up (again) and waiting for me underneath another big light, this time with a big bow on it (which is a gimmick but I will admit--super fun!). Came here to sell my car and was pleasantly surprised by the service and how much $$ I got back for my car! As soon as I walked in, there was a greeter who asked how they could help me. Sat down with an employee and got to work. They quickly assessed my car and there was a short wait period. Afterwards, they came back to me and gave me a quote that was only good for a week. All in all, a place that is MUCH better than just getting your car sold for a trade-in at the dealership. There's also vending machines in case you get hungry. Plenty of parking in the front of the building. Now that is my car is sold... how am I supposed to get outta here? Dang, I should've planned a little better..... read more

The guy helping me was extremely nice but their appraisal process is a complete sham. They told me the appraiser found evidence the frame had been repaired which CONVENIENTLY made the offer $2-3,000 less than it normally would have been. My car had never been in a accident that caused frame damage and had never had the frame messed with at any point in time. I told the guy as much and he just said "The appraisers know what they're doing so if he says he found evidence of frame repair then I'm sure he really did." Yeah...... okay Carmax..... the dealership where I ended up buying my new car gave me a much more fair offer and said nothing about any frame damage repair. read more

I sold my sixteen year old car here over the weekend, getting a fair price. If I had had time to sell it myself privately, I would have gotten more for it. But they make it totally smooth, friendly and easy by giving a fast appraisal and then giving you seven days to think about it, if you want. The process for sale is easy as long as you have clear title and registration and they unscrew your plates and give them to you, along with a bank draft for deposit (no cash) for the car. Sad to see my car go to auction, but maybe there's a buyer out there and these folks know how to find him or her. read more

The car shipped and delivered Saturday, yet when I spoke to the rep yesterday (Tuesday) he said the car wasn't delivered yet. He doesn't return phone calls and for some reason has insisted on not meeting at Carmax until the car was delivered. My husband, being the nice guy he is, has been patient. His patience has run out. Horrible experience. We bought a 2015 Fiat Pop and it was horrible from the first interaction. Sloppy buying experience. Finally we have the car for a week and the check engine light pops. CarMax suggests that we go to the dealer. Despite the fact that we have a 30 day warranty from Carmax. We push on the idea that we have a warranty from them. So they delete the code - it's "historic" they say. Check engine light came back a week later. I'm fairly convinced they cleared this code before they sold it to us. We had a fantastic experience here with Bob as our sales consultant. The second we walked in, he was very warm and friendly and didn't redirect us to anyone else. He stayed with us from check in to walk out. He was cognizant of us needing to get out ASAP to get our kids, despite us being walk in customers and at the end of the lineup. We came in to get a car appraised, and it was such a simple process. While we waited about 20 minutes for our car to get appraised, he chatted with us about Carmax, cars that we were potentially interested in and never pressured us to buy a car there. It was like chatting with our friendly neighbor about car options and our families. He kept checking in on our appraisal updates every couple of minutes and even went out to make sure they were taking care of it. He also tried a couple of outlets to track down a vehicle we were simply curious about (not even seriously buying) and went the extra mile to do that. Once the appraisal was finished, he quickly printed it out, gave it to us and we were on our way. No issues and no pressure. A week ago Friday I took delivery of my used 2011 Cadillac CTS sedan. This was the most pleasant Car purchasing experience I have ever had, and being 68 years old that says something! My Sales Representative was Danny Muboyayi and this young gentleman is a true professional in all ways. He is a non-pressure type of person and after asking some very pointed questions he assisted my Wife and me with making a car selection that would fit our needs and our budget. The car has actually exceeded my expectations and is as close to a new car because it has only 21K miles on it. Yesterday my Wife and I had to go to NY and drove the Cadillac, what a comfortable car plus we averaged 31 MPG. I have a 2005 Cadillac Deville that next year I will be in the market for a replacement and Danny at Carfax will be my first and only stop. read more
