With less than 36 hours left in my rental car I went to this place feeling totally defeated by the process and a little bitter after receiving less than acceptable service at another prestigious big namer in town. But that all changed when Reggie and his big grin walked up and took over. I went in not really knowing what I was looking for and make no mistake, Reggie didn't know either, but he helped me figure it out. This was a no pressure, no haggle pleasant md quite fun process. My son turned 17 and I think I waited as long as I could to buy him his first car. Lets forget the fact that I drove my mother's 69 Buick LeSabre before I drove her pimped out LTD. After that, my twin brother and I shared a 67 Mustang before going off to college and sharing a brand new Toyota truck in 1983. But I digress. My son was convinced he wanted a truck so we looked long and hard both in person and on internet. With a budget of about $15k, it wasnt going to go as far as we thought it would. That kind of money will buy you a 2005-2008 Toyota Tacoma with about 100k miles on it! Anyway, we decided to walk some of the lots in our area on a Sunday and pickings were once again slim. Either too old with too many miles or too expensive. While walking the CarMax lot we actually saw a four door sedan that we liked. I called a salesperson on the next day and he said that he would hold long enough to come take a look at it. He stayed in touch but wasnt pushy. He was fine with me texting him to keep in touch and when I told him that I had my own financing, he didnt protest. He shared openly ( I think its the law ), that the car had being either a fleet or a rental. I didnt car because the car had low mileage, was clean and the price was right. He also shared that the car had a couple of cosmetic repairs due to fender benders and offered to have the used car buyer come out and try to show me where it might have happened. This was right before the first of the year, yet I never felt the pressure to purchase before the end of the month like some dealers. I came in once and drove it in the rain. The next time I came, he didn't presume that I was going to buy but had it ready for me to take an extended drive and look. I told him I was ready to buy but that I was going to pass on warranty because of past experience. I fully expected pressure to upgrade with other options including financing and warranty, but it never came. Without a doubt, this was the single easiest, no hassle, no pressure car buying experience I have ever had. No sales manager. No F&I guy. No tricks. No lies. Just straight up service and information when I asked for it. Unethical company. CarMax is advertised as an honest service with no haggling and easy purchasing. I had no difficulty with customer service before purchasing. During my purchase I was pressured excessively by the salesperson to purchase a warranty (which upon examining does not cover anything that actually breaks down often). It was an equally uncomfortable experience to any dealership I have been to before. The car was advertised to come with bluetooth and does not have it (although every model from that time period should be manufactured with it). I tried to make an appointment to get this fixed and they only take appointments Monday-Thursday during business hours; however, they are open for sales until late every evening and throughout the weekend. My work at the time was not flexible and I could not get this fixed within 90 days of purchasing the car despite speaking to multiple representatives about this. The people I've spoken to now say it's too late to fix this and I have not heard back from a manager. This is clearly false advertising and this company could easily accommodate my situation, but has chosen not to. Additionally, the car was sold to me as non-smoking and was scented when I bought it, but now the scent they put in it has worn off and it smells like cigarettes. I am extremely unhappy with the service provided and the vehicle. I will not be purchasing from any CarMax in the future and especially do not recommend this location. read more

I traded in my volvo of 12 years because the repare costs were become more than the car was worth. I received a suprizingly nice trade in offer despite its issues. The thing I was most impressed with was the wealth and depth of knowledge my sale associate Ryan Layfield had of each of the 5 possible make and models options that woud fit my budget before I zeroed in on the Hyundai Elantra. By the way, after tax, title an licence he was able to predict my drive out cost within $15. Unfortunately I ran into some issues with the alarm going off the next couple of days after purchase. I realize when you are buying a used car not everthing is going to work like a new car. After trying to resolve the issue I decided to use their 5 day, no questions asked return policy and within an hour I hade exchanged it for a simular equipted elantra and was on my way. The bright side, the experience was like having a 3 day long test drive. My customer service was excellent and beyond my expectstions. I have purchased 4 prior vehicles with carmax and all were smooth plesent transaction. It is nice to see when things don't go as planned, we can resolve the issue and receive the same outcome. After shopping online for several months .... Car Max was one of our first stops so we could look at several different cars to make our final decision. Not even intending on test driving until we had decided on a car. We saw a Lincoln MKX and we liked it, but we were still leaning towards a Honda Pilot. After looking at several other dealers that day we decided on the Lincoln. The price was right, lower mileage and cleaner than any we had looked at. Reggie was very helpful and not pushy. I really want to applaud the CarMax team for working quickly, efficiently and with so much kindness. Saturday my previous vehicle stopped on me on the side of the freeway. It was a very stressful situation to deal with. That night I began to search for dealerships and browsing cars. My heart was set on a Civic from the start but of course within my personal budget. I submitted my pre-qual application and called it a day. The next morning Angela from CarMax reached out to me first thing. She was very friendly over the phone. We didn't have to talk for long before she helped me find what I needed. That day I spent my time browsing cars in other dealerships and it was so stressful. My last stop that evening was at CarMax. I went here to get my car service on Tuesday 5/28/2020 for the acceleration, my car would stall like it's stuck in gear, which is what I told their service department. Elian the rep that helped me check my car in was sweet as a button. I checked in and left my car for the day. Long story short they found something wrong, they got me in a rental for a couple days. My car was ready Friday. Saturday morning I went around the corner and I notice my car was having the same problem plus a noise that I never heard before, so I took it back to car max 5/6/2020 after several hours they said they didn't find nothing and I had to pay 119 dollars for testing the car which they found nothing. I talked to the manger for over 10 mins trying to figure out what exactly why I had to pay for a diagnostic test that doesn't even detect transmission in the first place. They made my car worse than what it was and Jamal(Manger) wasn't sympathize of my concern. My car wasn't making a noise before I took it to them. So now it's still acceleration issue with a rumbling noise that THEY created. So think twice about taking your car here! read more

This is a classic case of "If I could give it less than one star I would." What an awful experience through and through. My girlfriend and I went to this Carmax to look into trading in her 2011 Chevy Cruze for a 2014 Chevy Volt they had on the lot. The first red flag appeared when our consultant took us out on the lot to see the vehicle and it was absolutely filthy. She apologized naturally, blaming it on the rain when we all knew it hadn't rained in at least a week. Not sure how that would have affected he interior of the car which looked like it hadn't been cleaned since it was brought in. The most concerning issue was the overall lack of knowledge our consultant had on the vehicle, and cars in general. We asked where the electric charger port was only to realize our lovely consultant was unaware of the fact that it was a hybrid car. She mentioned "yeah I should have done my research...." UMMMM YEAH NO KIDDING ISNT THAT LIKE YOUR JOB OR SOMETHING!? Anyways as soon as we start the car up I notice right away it sounds very loud. Contrary to what I've always heard about the low volume of electric and hybrid cars, this one seemed to be making a strange buzzing noise that we of course weren't able to get any insight on this from our consultant. Frankly I'm surprised she was able to remember the test drive route. Which reminds me, the test drive was very brief and we were told we weren't allowed to drive on the highway so apparently getting the car above 35 mph just wasn't something we should be concerned with. When bringing this to the attention of our consultant as being concerning, she snapped at me, making me feel rude for raising any concerns in general. And finally a very typical low-ball appraisal for our Chevy Cruze was all we needed to be sure that coming to this place was a major mistake and not one we or anyone should have to make again. I was having issues with my car and it arrived at this location on January 4th. I was told it wouldn't be able to be assessed for a few days due to COVID which of course is understandable. I received a call on January 6th detailing the issues with my car and continued to receive consistent updates for about 2 weeks following that. Unfortunately, after those few weeks of consistent updates I began to no longer receive any updates regarding my car. I had to start calling to get any information about when the repairs on my car would be completed and ultimately started receiving insufficient information. After stating my concerns with customer service via email and Twitter, when I had to go back to the location to get a replacement loaner vehicle I was met with backlash. This entire situation has been stressful for me through my last few weeks of pregnancy and I hope to have this situation resolved before I am due to deliver my baby. read more

This particular CarMax is the most unprofessional place to deal with. We've been wanting to downsize from a Dodge Ram Laramie (it has every bell & whistle you could imagine - & my husband has taken impeccable care of it) to a Toyota Tacoma. We wanted a used 2014 or 2015. My husband finally saw a 2015 Toyota Tacoma available with less than 15k miles at this CarMax. We even contacted the original dealership and found out about the life of the truck & and why it was traded in. CarMax valued our current truck & it was much higher than the Toyota Dealership was willing to give us - & pretty much what we would have put it up for sale on Craigslist - so we decided to trade in and save the headache of selling it ourselves. The trouble started when they found out we weren't going to use them for financing. They wanted to lower the price they were giving us on the Dodge at that point. Then, they proceeded to make it as difficult as possible for us and our credit union. We have bought 4 vehicles using our credit union - and all from out of state where the credit union is located - never a problem. What should have taken one afternoon took almost 1 week. When my husband would call they would say it was our credit union & try to convince him to use their financing. However, our credit union kept us in the loop and it was CarMax giving wrong forms, forms with incorrect math, & doing what they could to make it more difficult for our credit union. The emails from CarMax to the credit union were very rude and condescending. CarMax told us several lies: Texas law prevents out of state financing (not true)/ Texas law requires out of state lending institutions to be licensed in Texas (not true), Texas law prevents an out of state lending institution provide paper check & not a draft (not true) - all in an attempt to get us to use their financing They wanted check in hand within 24 hours (they refused to accept a draft which would have been done in hours - they said it was Texas state law that they had to have a paper check and couldn't release the truck until the check cleared. Again, another lie - and another delay.) Our credit union gal received their final demanding conditions at 4:30 her time - and within half an hour - put everything together and overnighted the documents and the check to the dealership - which they received at 10:30 the next morning. So, my husband calls the dealership and asks if they have everything they need? They said yes, and that when he picked up the truck that evening - it would take less than 20 minutes (we had an appointment to keep elsewhere). Lo and behold we show up at the appointed time - & wouldn't you know it nothing was ready. My husband had had enough at this point. He asked for the manager and said - we're done. Just tear up all the documents - return the money to the credit union and we'll go elsewhere. HA!!! That's when we were told that we couldn't do that - against the law - we signed a contract to trade in our truck - yada yada yada. I myself, was ready to tell them to do what they had to do. The manager promised we'd be out in 30 minutes. Of course we weren't. It was a good hour and a half. We missed our dinner engagement. It doesn't end there. We purchased leather seats - supposed to be done when we picked up the truck. Not done - and another lie told to us. They told us to bring it in Aug. 1 and they would have loaner & we could pick it back up on Wed. Aug 1 rolls around my husband calls to confirm the appointment & leaves a VM. He gets an email that the office messed up & could we bring it in Aug. 8 My husband asked about the two tone leather option & was told that there was no such option (it's in their video in their showroom). He called the factory they get the leather from - guess what we paid the higher two tone leather price. Aug. 8 - husband confirmed the appointment to drop off the truck. The sales manager assured us it was set up, they had a loaner for us, etc. We drop off the truck - the sales manager isn't even there - the service guys have no clue & make us fill out a drop box form - & no loaner for us. They tell us CarMax doesn't do loaners. I had followed in my car so we had that to go home in. This morning he gets a call from a girl at CarMax, she has nothing about us getting leather - and it doesn't take 1 day - it takes 3 (we're out a vehicle for 5 days total not 3). They had no idea we were dropping the truck off. My husband sent her every email which shows they made the appointments, the different lies we were told, etc. We gave them a chance to split the cost with us for a remote start (less than $100 on their end) because of how difficult they've been - and we got a less than nice email telling us no. Meanwhile - they made $3,000 on the sale of the Tacoma - and have our truck listed for $8,000 more than what they gave us - and they can't spend $100 to make up for their deplorable customer service? read more

About a month after buying the car, I was stopped at Border Control and told that they detected the residue of illegal substances in the trunk. Happened about a year ago when I was selling my truck. Went to CarMax and got kind of a lowball offer sighting some hail damage as the reason. We were promised the offer would increase if the damage was fixed. Got it fixed that weekend, returned the next and the offer remained the same, they said they could tell it had been damaged. The only reason they knew it had damage was the computer system told them. Obviously disappointed we went to Texas Direct Auto, they offered us 4000 more than car max. Getting the car and the buying experience was great but i started to notice things after. I bought the car at night while it was pouring rain the next morning I noticed that it was filthy on the inside and i had to have it detailed. On the 30th day after purchase i noticed a loud noise come to find out my back brakes are BAD! I called to get it serviced and they were closed at 2pm! I call the next Monday morning and they told me that BRAKES are considered wear and tear i have had this car 33 DAYS!! I went in Monday after work and looked at the specific make and model I wanted. When I found the one I would eventually purchase, the battery was dead. My knowledgable and friendly sales rep, Brad W., said he would get it checked out and hold the car. I returned the next day, and true to his word, Brad had the battery replaced and ready for a test drive. After a 30-minute wait for the financing to go through, I drove off the lot in my 2014 fully loaded car. Brad W. explained everything about the full warranty, which was included in my payments, without pressure or the 'hard' sale. In addition, the signing of all the paperwork was easily handled and fully explained. This is my third vehicle from CarMax, and will always recommend them to my friends. read more

This will be the first and last time I buy a car from Carmax. I was sold a Dodge Charger, which advertised a remote start. However, after purchasing the car and being told they would configure the remote start for me...they realized it did not come factory installed. Their solution, exchange the car for another car of less value and more miles or put a 3rd party remote on the car which would be an additional remote. Nii, the Regional Manager, avoided all my calls and visits to the dealership multiple times. He never once returned a call. Please note, that Andy Garcia, Services Manager, was nothing shot of being absolutely wonderful, however, he had no control over the decisions of Nii. I will start from the beginning: I have brought my Kia Soul to the Carmax location at 19500 NW Freeway, in Houston Tx many months ago. I had had my oil changed 3 days prior, and noticed the car was making a sound I was unfamiliar with. I made an appointment with Carmax @ 19500 NW Frwy in Houston, Tx. (as it is 9 minutes from my home and location wise very convenient) and explained that I had just gotten my oil changed and it was now making a sound. I brought the car in, got a call 1-2 days later saying that they had changed my oil... and there was nothing else going on. They charged me $100, I had just had my oil changed 3-5 days prior at that point. I get the car home... my A/C no longer works. Now... I am not a "Karen" so I called and explained that my A/C now didn't work when it had before, and nothing was done except to say I could bring it BACK in, pay a deductible and get that fixed. To which I said, why would I take it to you to fix it, you broke it. Second encounter with Carmax @ 19500 NW Freeway... took the car in for an ABS & Traction Control light... few days pass.. pay $250 deductible & pick up the car...now the electronic functions of my mirrors do not work. Never had any issue with the mirrors before (or the A/C). Call up there, am told the same thing as before... I could bring it back in and they could look at it. NO TY. At that point I begin to take my car elsewhere and pay out of pocket for any repairs... as their service department clearly does not know what they are doing, why would I allow them to continue to break things with my vehicle. Third encounter, to avoid paying out of pocket to repair MY A/C... I once again take my car into 19500 NW Freeway to get a new A/C and to address another ABS/Traction Control issue. They have had my car for 23 days today. I have heard EVERY EXCUSE IN THE BOOK from: "the parts are in" to "the parts are not in", "my service guy had a family emergency and cant do it until after the weekend", "the wrong parts were ordered"-twice... I have LITERALLY tried my VERY BEST to be kind and understanding. Yesterday to call and spoke with a female to tell her that I don't know why I am having to think outside the box and do other's jobs, but someone needs to go to a part store and PHYSICALLY PICK UP MY PART SO I CAN GET MY CAR BACK.... I spoke with someone else earlier in the day yesterday to get the CEO's contact info so that I could speak with him. Go figure, by end of day yesterday, I get a call from Eli in the service dept.(after I had called and spoken with the female about SOMEONE THAT WORKS THERE THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE BOX AND PHYSICALLY GOING TO A STORE TO GET MY PART) , stating that "they thought outside of the box and sent someone to get my part so that my car would be fixed by today. THESE FOLKS SHOULD BE ASHAMED at how deplorable all of this has been. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. PLEASE, FOR YOUR OWN GOOD JUST AVOID IT. Take it, LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE. Don't buy a car here. After getting finance approved online and picking out 3 cars to check out and drive, with only one allowed to hold, and requested another one from another dealership (which never arrived), my husband picked a car from one of two models/years/mileage I wanted. FIVE hours later, and a redo of the credit check which knocked our credit scores down for the SECOND TIME, system down, and major hassle with paperwork, my husband arrives home with the car. He was wiped out from waiting FIVE HOURS for the process to be done, and did not notice some MAJOR issues. I sat in the car -- reeks of smoke. Scratches on areas, and DIRTY inside. I mean filthy. Never cleaned. Remote to lock the car would not work. Windshield wiper bent. Tried to return it according to State law within 7 days -- there was NOTHING TO exchange it FOR -- told to come back when "something is in." On June 28, 2016, I purchased a 2012 Dodge Charger, VIN# 2C3CDXBG7CH162912. Sales department says that CarMax guarantees that all cars are fully inspected for damages etc. With this transaction, there was a $10,000 check and a debit of $2,000.00. On Monday, June 30, 2016, I had the car inspected by an ASE Certified Mechanic that I have been using for 10 years. The Carfax did not show any collisions reported. The findings were amazing. The Carfax did not show any collisions but my mechanic found the following: 1 Electronic power steering making noise due to a collision repair 2. Front engine cradle had been replaced 3 Lower Splash Guard repainted 4. Front bumper repainted. This was very obvious to a novice mechanic even though I was ensured that all vehicles are checked. Returning the car was fast however, I could not obtain my $2000.00 debit card transactions returned and was told I had to wait 10 business days. After buying a $32,000 Lexus, 4 days later the electric went out, tried to trade it for a Cadillac, only to find out 2 hours later it was Pending, finally after 7 hours we chose a BMW for the same $32,000, but 1 hour later, the A/C stopped. Took it back and all they did was recharged it. To begin with our sales person was Tammy. She done a fantastic job. However, when they appraised my vehicle they low balled me! Another lot had already offered me 1500 more! Second when I took the vehicle I thought I was going to purchase, they took my vehicle. Immediately it went to another lot to get ready for auction. When I decided to walk away from the deal (because the NADA value on the car I was goig to purchase was under the asking price) the manager Frede treated us crappy. They told us to wait 1 more day because my vehicle was at another lot and they would have to bring it back. The next day we took the vehicle back to get ours....they had lost our plates and the back latch was gone off my vehicle. Then they tried to screw my bank over by not giving the check back to void. They said they would tefund the money my mail, however they were trying to refund 1500 less then what the check was for. The are crooked and careless. The business department and manager are ridiculous. I will NEVER do business with them and I am glad I walked awaybfrom the deal and took my business else where! read more
