My boyfriend and I went in yesterday to get a price on his car. The guy who helped us was very helpful and professional. It took about the amount of time that he said to get the appraisal, which was 40 min. It did turn out to be less money than we still owed on the car, but whatever. It happens. The thing that made us really not want to come back was that when we got into the car, it smelled soooo bad. It smelled like burnt metal and rubber, like they drove the hell out of my boyfriend's car. My boyfriend was very disappointed. When he shifted gears, the car shaked, which I can attest that it has never done. He said something like they burned the shifter,? or whatever that part is called. If you like wasting a whole LOT of time dealing with "miscommunications", lies, excuses, phone messages being ignored, lack of responsibility, passing the buck and other nonsense, then this is the place for you. We had the unfortunate experience of purchasing two cars from this location. We owned the first one for 6 months and actually were able to drive it for about 3 weeks. The rest of the time, it was in a service bay at CarMax. We purchased a second car and, once again, it spent more time in the service bay than in our possession. In the end, they made it right by refunding ALL of our money but they wasted so many hours of our time with their complete and total inability to understand what customer service should be that it is not worth dealing with them. The only bright spot was Tanya Mendez who actually tried to help us and seemed to make some progress. Of course, she was only there for about 10 days and then just disappeared. My advice to anyone wanting to buy a car. Go anywhere but here. While we were waiting (and waiting and waiting) to pick up our refund (even though we were told it would be ready for us and we just needed to sign a few papers and pick it up), we spoke to another customer who had also had to return the car she purchased for major mechanical issues. CarMax is a pretty cool spot, not going to lie. I came to the Irvine CarMax to sell my 03 Infiniti G35 coupe. Such a sad day seeing my car go away :( Anyways, I made an appointment for an appraisal. My appointment was on time, I handed over my keys and they said that it would take about an hour for them to check out the car. Awesome, 1 hour was no big issue for me. I just used the time to check out each car in the lot. Sat in a few cool cars and day dreamed that I would be able to ride in some of the luxury lines. My initial thoughts about CarMax was that only Lemon or cars-that-nobody-wanted would be sold here. I was wrong! I saw a line or Porsches, a line of Lexus, about 5-6 BMW M3s, Corvettes, Lexus ISF, Camaros, etc... They actually do have some pretty nice cars here for sale! About 35 minutes in, I had just walked the entire car lot. Moments later, I get a call saying that my appraisal was done. Bam! it was that easy! The appraisal stood for about 6-7 days. I then drove to the LAX CarMax to do my actual selling since it would be a shorter drive for me parents. I arrived right when it opened, showed them the paper work and I was out in about 20 minutes. The car appraisal, the selling, and the signing of the documentation was a breeze. Bought my truck here in March of 2012. Great service and easy to buy. The poor rating is with the Service Department. Since I bought my truck I have brought it in three times for the same issue. I even bought the CarMax warranty for $2,500 or more when I bought my truck. The first time I brought it in they were helpful and told me that it could take 2-3 days to fix so they set me up with a rent-a-car that was covered under warranty. Same issue happened shortly after and they fixed it. This week I took it in for the 3rd time. They are so backed up on customers I had to schedule over a week in advance for my windows that would not go up. How difficult. Once I dropped it off I asked for the rent-a-car. Isaac told me they have to hold the car for atleast 24hrs before they can give me a rent-a-car. I told him this was not the same treatment I had last time and I knew they would not get it done in 1 day like he stated. So I went and got a rent-a-car on my own. Sure enough, they not only held for more than 1 day but will end up being atleast 3 days. So Steve has been communicating with me every step of the way and informed me I could have gone to Hertz and the warranty company would have reimbursed me, but Isaac failed to inform me this as I went to Enterprise. If you want bad customer service, a long wait to get your vehicle in to fix, a long wait to have it actually fixed (1 day to diagnose issue, 1 day to get warranty confirmation and order parts, and 1 day to fix) then this is the place! We might try the Costa Mesa location from this point on. I would never recommend anyone to buy the warranty or use CarMax service dept. read more

I was looking to sell my car quickly and without any hassle so I took it to CarMax for an appraisal, it took forever. The sales guy made up an excuse, saying that the computers went down for a while. Yeah, sure. When he finally showed me the appraisal it was an obvious low-ball offer. Never again, CarMax. If you're looking for somewhere to sell your car go to Adel at Trade-in Solutions. It's like a quarter mile away from CarMax. Look up Trade-in Solutions here on Yelp and make an appointment. They'll treat you right and give you a fair offer for your car. So many negative reviews but I decided to give CarMax Irvine a chance. Low and behold, I left disappointed not only once but TWICE by CarMax. I went car shopping and found my dream car in the lot. Of course, I wanted to go home and check its history and do a bit of research. After confirming it had only had one owner, I went back the SAME day to purchase and they told me the car was being transferred? I left upset but decided to return the following week. I found a new dream car in the lot. This time to avoid what happened the week prior, I left the lot and did the car history/research check on my phone outside. After confirming all looked good I returned to the lot to purchase and they informed me the car was being transferred to Buena Park? I was there and ready to buy! I'm annoyed that my time was wasted and extremely confused why vehicles that are meant to be transferred are kept in the lot for perspective buyers to get excited about only to have their dreams crushed. I noticed the next day in the sun it was dark blue! This place is a joke! Carmax will buy your car even if you don't buy one of theirs. I had a very pleasant experience here. Diana was awesome to speak with. I was selling my 2000 Infiniti G20t with over 144K miles on it. Carmax gave me double what the dealer offered for my trade-in. Done! I was very happy to get the appraisal which is good for 7 days. I was also able to sell it to a different location because I had to drive to a dealership in the IE and it was easier just to sell it out there after purchasing my new car. Great experience. Wow its not even 2 months after I bought this car and less then 1000 miles look what the BMW needs now.Ms. McKeen, As I just informed you, our technician found the right rear window motor and regulator in failing condition on your vehicle causing your concern. In addition, he found two oil leaks (engine valve cover and oil pan gaskets) that I also reported to your extended warranty company. They have assigned an inspection company to come look at the vehicle to verify the concerns and administrate coverage. The technician also found a few concerns not covered by an extended warranty, which are as follows: 1. Rear brakes are worn to 4mm. Minimum specifications are 3mm; he's recommending replacement. Estimate parts and labor is $705.00. 2. Steering fluid service - estimate $189.95. 3. Fuel injection service - estimate $189.95. 4. Microfilter service due - estimate $160.00 5. 2 tires, one measure at 4/32 and one measured at 3/32 tread depth. Estimate $492.00. read more

First of all, if you are not in the door within 30mins of opening on a weekend, don't even bother, the wait time is like 5 hours. Came back on a weekday evening, told wait time is 30 minutes, ended up waiting for 2 hours. Carmax seems to be a hit or miss, all depends on the individual Sales person you have the (dis)pleasure of working with. Unfortunately, this time I had a total tool. This guy was unfriendly, condescending, and talked down to customers. He started the conversation with "don't bother looking on Kelly Bluebook, we work differently." Really? Nice opening a_hole. I get that it's late, but I've been waiting there for 2 HOURS too. The appraisal came out 2K less than KBB, I just wanted to ask how they came up with this number, and this tool bag actually said "we're kind of already taking a loss on your car, so... you know..." Then why would you even make the offer? Is Carmax in the business to lose money? Do you think people are idiots and would actually believe that BS? Then I asked about how the selling process works. I was financed with a credit union and I knew that they are hard to reach after business hours, but I can only come in at night or weekends. So I asked if I have to call my credit union during the day and come back to Carmax in the evening. The tool-bag cut me off before I even finished the question and said "you might not be able to get through, but we have a different line to call." I decided to sell just because I'm moving and running short on time, came back couple days later in the evening, and sure enough, they couldn't get a hold of my credit union because it was after business hours, different line my @ss! Oh, it's not ready for sale, and they don't bother checking. I asked one of them about a Porsche I saw on the lot, and he pulled up their website that was showing only one Cayenne instead of the handful of 911's I saw. While the brake light switch and tires had already been fixed, the A/C was still having an issue. It ended up being the blower motor that had to be replaced. Bought my car here about 2 years ago, and was considering going back until 2 days ago. Review is about the service repair: Tired calling CarMax to see if I could bring in my car (since I purchased warranty through them), but of course no one picked up. Kept calling back and fourth during my one hour lunch break and still nothing. I have a Nissan Altima, that would not turn on (keyless/wheel was locked). After my husband looked at some videos on YouTube, we were able to get the car on by hitting the steering lock column with a wrench. Long story short, I headed to CarMax since I was never able to get ahold of anyone, after walking in it took them 2 minutes for anyone to even look up and greet me, everyone was on the computer, which is understood you're working; but it would be nice to be acknowledged. Was finally greeted by a man at the desk. Let him know that I was having trouble with my car and that I had just got it to turn on after it shut off on me twice. His response was that I needed an appointment to have my car looked at. I didn't appreciate being told that my non working car would not be looked at until 12 days later, and on top of that told me I could have a rental but it would only be good for seven days, and by then my car still wouldn't be looked at. Therefor my rental allowance would run out. Honestly that situation could have been handled differently. They up sale you all these warranty's but when it comes to using it you need to wait days and your left with a non functional car. Meaning if something decides to go wrong, make sure you plan it so your car can be seen accordingly. Thanks CarMax . Only reason I went to them was because they were closer to my work and I didn't want to pay My deductible elsewhere, since CarMax normally waives off the deductible fee. read more

The one star is given due to a missed appointment and lack of proper handling by the front desk. I made an 11am appointment n 7/24 (Sun) with Freddie to have my car appraised. When making the appointment, I asked how long the appraisal will take and stressed that I have another engagement afterwards so the appraisal must be completed within half an hour of the appointment time. I had sold cars to Car Max before so I am very familiar with the process and the time it should take. I was assured by Freddie that the appraisal would be completed within half an hour. I arrived at Car Max early and waited for the store to open at 11am. After the store is opened, I went to the front desk and asked for Freddie. As it turned out, Freddie is nowhere to be found. I asked the front desk rep if Freddie is in and was told that he is 'around'. So I stood at the front desk waiting. Meanwhile, all other customers who arrived after me had been served. After a few more minutes, the rep at the front desk confessed that Freddie is 'running late' and offered another 'consultant' with no definite availability. Since there is not enough time for the appraisal to take place and for me to get to my next engagement on time, I left. It is bad enough that Freddie did not make the appointment on time despite knowing the importance of doing so. The matter is exacerbated by the front desk rep who should have offered to find another rep immediately upon recognizing Freddie is not available at the appointment time. While the actions that I witnessed are from two individuals, this is a systematic lack of training and respect for their profession. I will not do business with this location again. read more

Haggle-free would be a GREAT idea if the cars were actually a fair price!! I was in love with a car there and it was at least $2500 over highest Kelly BB value for the car. It was an 8 year old Mazda and they wanted almost $14k for it (including fees)! You can get a new Mazda for not much more! I went in and offered them cash for the full sticker price (ALL I had) and asked them if they could include the fees if I handed them cash that day. I understand that their policy is no haggle, but they weren't even friendly about it. It was like "nope, no way, too bad, get one somewhere else then..." Just sad because I would have loved the car, and it was grossly overpriced. The only reason someone would make a purchase like that is if they really didn't do any research or have any knowledge cars. They are totally taking people and it's not okay. The one positive thing I will say, is that they were nice about holding the car and giving me more time to think about it. Their business model would work great if they actually had the customer's interests in mind. Haggle-free is not customer service if it's highway robbery. Bummer. Make sure you do your research before going in! P.S. Came in here and had good experience with getting one of our cars appraised, but then when we came back to look at cars we got some guy who was just running us around looking at a very small number of cars and didn't even look at suv, trucks or anything besides compact cars, and then he wouldn't let us test drive the car until we filled out our loan application forms. And the guy told us westlake financial was a really good lender for our car loan and that place is the worst so if you do go here don't finance with westlake. I really wish we had gone to the costa mesa location or elsewhere. read more

We were looking at a car at the Ontario store and then decided to purchase a model with a larger engine at the Irvine location. The salesperson called the Irvine location and spoke to JIM BAKER, who said he would place the car on hold for us. We then provided our name and phone number. So we drove from Ontario to Irvine. When we arrived, we were told the car had left the lot an hour ago and was being transferred to the Kearny Mesa store! We said we spoke to Jim, who said he would place the car on hold. The salesperson went to talk to Jim and told us the following- she apologized and said Jim wasn't able to place the vehicle on hold fast enough, so it was transferred on an inventory switch of some sort. I asked why we weren't notified prior to making the long drive and she couldn't answer. It was even more upsetting that Jim would not come speak to us himself! She said we could wait a couple of days and have the vehicle transferred back so we could purchase it. I asked if they were going to offer any type of compensation for their mistake and was basically told we wouldn't get anything more then a "sorry". All of my other experiences at various Carmax's have been positive and the level of customer service is usually much higher then this. I did maintenance for my BMW 740i in Carmax Irvine, CA in 07/09/2015. When I dropped off my car, everything was fine. when I was there to pickup my car, the service guy said she cannot open the door with my remote. so the manager TANYA gave me a free loaner, which was very rare to Carmax and I had to leave my car 1 more week. then I got call saying they cannot fix it which had to be done at BMW dealer. if they went to dealer, it was going to wait longer because they were competitors. TANYA wanted me to go to dealer. but when I let dealer to fix my car, the estimate is $1200. when I went back to Carmax asking them whether they wanted to fix it or pay for dealer to fix it. The STORE MANAGER TANYA was acting like a jerk, saying it was an incident. We were not responsible for the damage. You drove away your car, everything is set. Carmax is Scam or Service department is scam. when they broke something, they will try their best to let your drive your car away and when you come back they back up. Do Not come here. I am getting a lawyer right now to let jerk TANYA and Carmax pay more on what they had done. read more

I saw that they were offering a similar car for around $35k so I thought maybe they can offer me 30-32k. But instead they offered $25k. Kidding? lol. Even if I parked the car for the remaining 2.5 years of the lease and paid the monthly all payment to bmw ($10k) then return the vehicle at the end of the lease, I'd end up ahead. Yes, in the age of Craigslist, it seems downright irresponsible to dump your car at a dealer, but the service here was so refreshingly professional that I still felt good about it. They offered $50 more than KBB Trade-In (Excellent cond), and while that's still a lot lower than Private Party, you would not believe how shady the people who contacted me on Craigslist about my car were. They even gave me back my license plate frame when I came back a day later having forgotten it on my car. That's another $30 saved! (price tag was still attached..) read more

Having dealt with a few dealers in the last two years (my boyfriend and I both bought cars) I was seriously skeptical. We needed to unload my boyfriends 20 year old 100,000+ miles car. The dealership that he bought his new car offered 300. Carmax offered 1000, after we told them the other dealership offered 300! No games, or haggling. The whole process was efficient and transparent. With in two hours we had the appraisal, the offer and the check. There really isn't a better way to describe the experience besides hassle-free. Very happy with my new (pre-owned) car and the Carmax experience! I can only testify on my car buying purchase. I did not sell my car here as I didn't feel they were offering enough. However, I came back to purchase a car and would recommend it. My search for a new Honda began with Costco. I filled in the information online. The next day I think every single sales person at the Rancho Santa Margarita Honda dealer called me to make an appointment. I had to keep telling them I was already contacted. Upon talking to someone on the phone, the salesperson says he has one used Odessy that he thinks I'll like. Just one and the day I wanted to come in was his day off. That led me to Carmax. Emil was my salesperson. When I told him I wanted a Honda but was open to a Toyota, we test drove both, plus a Nissan. Once I set my mind on a Honda, we talked about price and options, and were able to look at the inventory in all Carmax's. Emil found two and had them shipped in. I was able to look at them side by side. Emil does not try to upsell you, and is really honest when he says you don't need to spend the money on extras. He also does not force you into a decision. I was indecisive, so I appreciated not having to make a decision right away, and had a couple days to think about what I really wanted. I also did a little internet research on the vehicle and found the Carmax price was more than fair, actually below KBB value. More importantly, I was getting piece of mind that all the vehicles are inspected and in great condition. Paper work was quick and easy. They even cleaned and polished the car inside and out. I had a lovely, hassle-free car selling experience!! I cant speak to anything else. I talked to Mehrab and Neal for my appraisal both very nice guys! Easy to communicate with often over text which i found weird at first, but it was convenient for me. Maybe not other people. At first my appraisal was a little low almost insulting for my car. I was about to write a terrible review (like a few others here) until i took my car to mazda and honda dealerships for appraisals and they quoted me lower, and MUCH lower oye -____-. Despite what your car is actively selling for, carmax makes money off your trade-in so of course it's going to be lower to make money. The appraisal process was relatively fast 30-45 minutes from the time i walked inside. If everyone is super busy, just ask the front desk smack in the middle of Carmax and they will send an associate over right away. When we actually brought the car in to sell, everyone in the back office was very nice (but not too chatty which i dislike), professional, smiling, efficient, and fast (about 30-45mins). Once you have the appraisal, you can just go straight to the back office with your paperwork. No need to talk to the sales people again. I just bought a 2011 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Sr5 TRD Off-Road truck from CARMAX IRVINE and I've had it now for a few days so it's time for me to share my thoughts. I'll start off with the good: This is my 2nd vehicle purchase at CarMax and overall they're a pretty decent place to buy a car from. Here's what makes me happy: 1. They have good vehicles at fair and honest prices. 2. They transferred my truck from Vegas free of charge for me to look it over to see if I wanted to buy it (I was NOT obligated to buy it...very cool!) 3. They offered me a fair but somewhat of a low price to buy my previous truck. Their appraisal was higher than another dealers offer but slightly lower then what I sold it to a private party for. 4. My sales guy, STEPHEN GIBSON was super cool, non-pushy, extremely honest, very informative and kept me in the loop about the transfer status of my truck. Definitely the guy to see!! Here's the bad news: 1. The truck looked just like the photos (Mostly) except the brakes felt "funny". Their service guys discovered lots of built-up brake dust and had to clean & lube the brake assemble to get the brakes to work properly....which they do now. 2. By the time the paperwork was done it was dark outside and I noticed the headlights were not aligned properly and rushed back in to notify the manager. 1 light was pointed straight down instead of being level. Instead of raising that headlight up, they lowered the other headlight. I had to go to a mechanic and have them properly align the headlights at a cost of $60.00. 3. The tires were the original factory BFG Rugged Trail tires with almost 42K miles on them and showed noticeable cracking. They measured 6/32 which meant they were near the end of their life. I immediately installed new BFG All Terrain T/A KO's at a cost of $1,000.....ouch! 4. The cabin air filter was filthy dirty and had to be replaced.....it was easy for me to do but another unnecessary expense for me. 5. Here's the kicker....night 2 after buying the truck it was cranking slowly when I tried to start it....I immediately went to Autozone to have the battery checked before I was stranded someone with a dead battery. Sure enough the battery was bad and had to be replaced at a cost of $130. O.K., I've bought and sold many vehicles over my lifetime and I realize it's a USED truck but......I paid $25K for a vehicle that was SUPPOSED to have passed "the rigorous CarMax 125-Point Quality Inspection. I asked to see the completed checklist that was fill out by them showing what was inspected...I wanted to see what they had corrected....everything was checked O.K. meaning they changed/corrected/repaired/fixed NOTHING.....come on, really??!! Their 125-Point Quality Inspection is a JOKE!!! If they actually did the inspection they rave about then they would have caught the items I listed!! I'm still satisfied because I did my homework and bought a vehicle at a fair price that is bulletproof, has a high resale value and will provide me with many years of dependable service. My advice is do your homework and double check everything so you get everything you pay for. read more

We were able to look at several makes in one location and that was what we were hoping for. We did try to reach a particular sales person by phone and had difficulty with that. Either the office staff is poorly trained or their phone system is inefficient, or they don't have a decent phone carrier. Whatever the reason, they couldn't connect us with the right person but offered a personal cell number. What?!?! We passed on that option and left a message with one of the other sales people. I found a car I wanted on Sunday and told them I'd be down to finish purchasing it on Tuesday (since Monday was a holiday, the banks were closed). Went there for an appraisal, they came back with $10,000 but they listed for a similar car with 8,000 less miles but less equipment for $16,495. I know they need to make a profit but that was a bit much and it is the second time that has happened. But I've know others who have been happy with the price Carmax gave them. The real problem I have is the moldy smell of the place. Damn! It was worse than a locker room and made my throat swell for the next two hours after I left. Cars are overpriced. I mean overpriced more than it's acceptable for a car store, even with guarantee and such. The sales rep was less than eager to sell, but a nice guy. I also didn't like that there were no low-budget cars under 7K. But I understand why. I don't know if I'll use CarMax in the future. I like buying from reputable dealerships, big ones like nissan or honda etc: they sell inspected cars at better prices and. I'm pretty good at haggling and there's such thing as Contract Cancellation Option Agreement if I want to return the car within 2 days. So what if CarMax gives me 3 addl days to return the car - I don't need that long and wouldn't pay extra couple of thousands for that. Bottom line, I feel that CarMax does basically the same thing all used car dealers do - take advantage of the fact that consumer is ill informed. They just do it in different ways. read more

While I liked the no haggle policy. I absolutely hate the back and forth with managers. Don't be fooled. They are probably making more money than anyone out there. I got a great deal in my new/used car. Blue book value, right in the middle. But when it came to selling my car. I thought I had gotten a fair price, it was the same as the lease turn in, but I had really low mileage and thought it was worth more. But again no haggle. Now I see my car that they paid $22k for on sale on the lot for $26.9. A five thousand dollar markup. Pretty good profit for maybe 1 week for sale. read more

I just sold my 2007 Lexus SC430 to them and had a great experience with the place. It was my second car and I didn't need it so I decided to bring it down and get an appraisal. I was really mentally preparing for them to bullshit me and haggle me into a new car but they didn't. The appraisal price is the price and it doesn't matter if you buy a car from them or not. Stress free. The entire process was simple, took about an hour, and was way more convenient (and offered more money) than the Lexus dealership. Before you trade in your car to another dealer, check them out first. You won't regret it. However, while i was there. . . I had my eyes set on a 2010 Range Roger. . . I just might have to post an update on how the sales portion went. . . it's Christmas right?? I'm allowed to buy something for myself. . . :-) read more

These guys really are the kings of lowball offers. Whatever you do don't take your car there for a 2nd appraisal. As an example I took my pristine Challenger RT there mid October. After waiting around they came back with a 15k offer for it. I felt it was way low and thought I'd sell it privately. However due to family cicumstances I couldn't commit to that, so two months later took it back to get it re-assessed. Bear in mind it had done 40miles extra. Yes, 40miles. I have another car already. After waiting around for an appraisal the figure came back as... 12k. In 2 months, and with 40miles extra it was worth 3k less to them. Really? WTF? I had a quick look at their inventory and of course the prices they want for the same models and years are identical between October and December, 20k. The sales guy didn't have a clue why it was valued so much lower, and didn't care anyway. Oh, and their cars are overpriced and often completely incorrectly labelled in terms of their equipment and styles. read more

Let me explain the 3 stars instead of 5. My salesperson Gina gets 5 stars for sure! She was great to work with and 4 days later is still helping me with issues! She was very patient with me as I had no idea what I was looking for. I got a wild hair up my butt to go buy a car! The process after you find your dream car is ssssssooooooo long! It's like buying a house with all the paperwork! Now the service desk is a whole different story! I have called and left a message, they call me back, I call them back and it just keeps going in circles. As far as I know you only have 3 days to get things noted and taken care of but I have been calling for 4 days and getting no where! Plus they close at 6 - most people work 8-5 and can not make it in time and they are closed on weekends. so that is why I had to give it 3 stars. Maybe if they hurry up and get back to me and get these issues fixed I can change it to 5 stars. read more
