June 15, 2026, I purchased a 2025 Mazda CX-30 from Carmax. On July 31, 2026, I was driving up a steep hill and my gas dropped from 220 miles to 10 miles, with no gas station for at least 10 miles. I pulled over to try to figure out what happened and while the car was turned off the mileage went back up, not all the way but somewhat. We continued another 100 or so miles, only to have the gas drop again!! We were fine until we had to drive back home on Sunday Aug. 2, 2026, over 400 miles. As my husband and I were driving we got at least 200 miles and the gas dropped and we pulled over and shut the car off for about 10 minutes and then we were able to get back on the road. The mileage dropped another two times and we had to keep pulling over. On Monday, Aug 2nd I called Modesto Mazda dealership in the next city and set up an appointment to take the car in on Thursday Aug. 6, 2026. I had the car diagnosed and had to pay $230.00 out of pocket because the Mazda dealership was waiting for Carmax to pay for the diagnostic. The findings were that there were markings around the gas tank under the back seat and Mazda would not honor the warranty due to tampering. During this time I was also in contact with Carmax's Store Support Manager, Joey Vera. When I sat down with Joey he assured me he would do what he could do, which was nothing! The Mazda dealership was also in contact with Carmax and received no response. I emailed Joey on Aug.8th and I have never received a response. On Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, my husband and myself were out of town, again! As we were driving up a steep hill the mileage again dropped drastically!! As we drove home the mileage continued to drop but once the car was parked the mileage went back up. Today, Wednesday, Aug.26, 2026, I decided to call Mazda Corp. and spoke with Bridget and she let me know that the dealership is the one who determines warranty coverage. After speaking to Bridget at Mazda Corp. I called Mazda Modesto and spoke with the service manager, David. David actually took the time to look into things and let me know the reason the warranty would not cover the fuel pump, gage, and/or lines is because someone put an after market pump on the vehicle that was not disclosed to me when I made the purchase from Carmax in Modesto, CA. I should not have to come out of pocket for $2,327.08 for repairs that they should have caught when Carmax did two inspections and this big problem was not caught! Since Carmax does not want to take responsibility for the vehicle they sold me, I just make a report to the BBB Auto line. Carmax count your days!!! My uncle got a car there for about 22k way over price for the year of car he got and he's unable to pay the payment trying to sell it back and they're only giving him 15k for the car. They went from 16k to 7 days later only offering him 15k for the car. He bought it for 42k This is bullshit . It's sad because I have always heard bad shit when it come to this place. I purchased a 2023 Jeep Compass from CarMax and within 8 days the vehicle stalled while driving. I was originally told the start/stop system had been disabled by the dealer. After the failure, Jeep inspected the vehicle and found improperly modified low-voltage wiring that had been cut and altered -- not a factory or dealer change. CarMax service acknowledged the issue, and I was informed the vehicle likely should not be resold and may need to go to auction. The vehicle has now been tied up in repair for nearly 30 days. Despite this, the only resolution offered by the store was either: - Repair the vehicle without meaningful warranty protection, or - Cancel the deal and absorb the financial loss, leaving me without transportation No effort was made to provide a comparable replacement or offset the financial impact caused by this situation. This was a vehicle sold with an undisclosed modification that created a safety issue, and the resolution offered does not reflect that. I am currently escalating this matter. read more

I bought a car for 13,000 plus MaxCare. In the one year to the day since I've owned it, it's been to the mechanic six times. More than any car I've ever bought on Craigslist. This last repair they didn't cover due to a previous mechanics error, which was done prior to me buying it. So, they saw something was wrong and still sold the car. The mechanic I took it to said he was shocked they sold a car in this condition. Over $8000 in repairs in one year of ownership. They have a very large network thus they have an advantage over most dealerships. They are always busy and helpful. Never dealing with this place again. We made an appointment at 11 to look at a 3500 Sierra Denali and another appointment at 12 to look at the same type truck, just different color. The truck we had planned to see at 11 wasn't ready so they brought up the 2nd truck, which had horrendous interior damage not well represented in the pictures so we didn't even test drive it. We had to wait for over a hour for the 1st truck we were supposed to look at to be ready because it needed gas and that apparently takes an hour to do. Then after the test drive Mitchel TOOK THE TRUCK when we were still looking at it. Then Mitchel disappeared and never came back. Finally we just left in disgust. So let me tell you how my day went: 0 stars- Drove from out of town to make this purchase- had offer letter and everything already completed. Arrived at this carmax place at 6pm- apt was at 630pm, was seen at 6:15pm. Asked if it was going to be okay since they close at 9pm, he replied, " Oh yes, ofc you will be out of here before then." We waited to get everything done and processed, was there until 830pm, they close at 9. Even up until 830, the sales rep wasn't even sure that we would be able to leave with the car- apparently there were some "technial issues" with their computers. He was very rude and had no customer service skills. Was not apologetic at all. I felt very rushed- and he had an attitude the whole time. He was also working in between customers, having us and this other couple switch chairs back and forth while he did the other things. Very unprofessional and irritating. At this point- I already had enough. I am so disappointed and that I should've just had the car shipped to where I was at and then go from there. No one was helpful there and everyone seemed to mind their own business. He even commented that because the manager is new- he didn't know anything. Just wanted to show you what type of sales rep person we were working with. Also asked us with a attitude as to "WHY WE DIDNT WANT TO GET THE CARE PACKAGE." We said it was not needed and I believe he got even more irritated. I thought that CARMAX was supposed to be "haggle free" but it felt like haggle more. Carmela Enos was especially rude, dismissive, and had absolutely no sense of customer service. She barely acknowledged us, acted like answering simple questions was a chore, and had the worst attitude I've ever encountered at a dealership. The entire experience was a joke. The employees were unhelpful, uninterested, and completely lacking in professionalism. If you hate your job that much, at least try to fake it for the customers. My car-buying experience in CARMAX Florida was excellent, but Modesto CARMAX location fell short. The staff here seemed inexperienced, with a primary focus on earning commissions from used cars. Raul was great and genuinely wanted to help; unfortunately, he was unavailable the night we visited. We ended up dealing with Kevin and his trainee, Quest, who I do not recommend. I had an online appraisal for my 2018 BMW 330ix at $13,000. However, when I brought the car in, I received an appraisal with the same criteria applied, but the offer was drastically lower at $8,000. I asked for an explanation and was told it was because the car wasn't all-wheel drive, which I immediately corrected--it is all-wheel drive. Then, they claimed the lower value was due to an accident, a fender bender. They also mentioned there was no recall on the vehicle, but that was incorrect as well; there was a recall, which was why I brought it to Modesto BMW in the first place. This appraisal discrepancy and misinformation undermined my confidence in this location's trustworthiness and competence. (Carmax Modesto, ca) I paid $300 to have a vehicle shipped to my Modesto Carmax. In the end, I never purchased the vehicle. We tried closing the sale Sunday evening as the store was closing. Unfortunate, we weren't able to complete the sale and trade in of my paid off vehicle because the manager couldn't find or get the verification on the trade in quote, that we received from the same car 10 days prior. staff was gone or leaving for the day. We had the official Trade in Quote with us but that didn't matter. The manager told us to come back when they opened the following day. On the way back to car max the following day, we decided to check on rebates and rates for a brand new at the Kia dealership to compare with the 2 year old vehicle w/60k miles that I paid to ship to local carmax. The better deal for us was buying new at the dealership. I leave a 3 star rating because we were unable to buy the vehicle we wanted at the time due to Carmax technical errors. 5 stars for our sales rep CLEO WILSON. She was phenomenal. She was very accommodating and helpful offering activities and snacks for our two restless toddlers. She volunteered to come in to complete the sale on her day off. She was very professional and understanding when we informed her 10 mins prior to our next morning appt that we're not going to finish our purchase at Carmax. I don't remember the manager's name but he was great, very friendly, and professional. However, because Carmax was unable to close our guaranteed sale that night. We ended up finding a better offer elsewhere. I'm glad it worked out this way but I can't help to think, that I would have bought the car from Carmax had they not told us to come back the following morning due to technical difficulties with the trade-in verification. He asks if I had any other offers. I say no. Then he tells me to go have a seat, and they will call may name. I wait till 6:00 thinking ok surely I will be called shortly, nope. These people literally give you grains of information so that you consistently have to return with more questions because they do not tell you everything you need to know in the first call. We went in to get an appraisal on the vehicle. My father is wheelchair bound and not able to come to the site. We were told all we need is a signed DMV power of attorney form. We get that paper wet signed we ask about making an appointment now we need a packet of paperwork. I call and speak with Brandon in the business office who tells me all I need is this packet signed. wild because when we picked the packet up the packet doesn't just need to be signed. It needs to be notarised. if people in your business office are not equipped to provide all of the information needed to complete their own process, what is the point? read more

They are great as far as getting you going with a new vehicle, HOWEVER we drove the beautiful truck for only 60 miles max and the check engine light came on and the transmission went out. I was thinking no problem they have their 10 day policy!!!! As much as I just wanted them to make it right so I could keep the truck it would have been weeks before I could get it back. CarMax left me underwhelmed on their Service, Quality of the car selected, and Communication. 1. Every communication request had to be initiated my me across 2 different vehicles. Not once did they call me to discuss the issues or delays on vehicle transfer or repairs. 2. The 125 Point Inspection by CarMax FAILED to disclose damage to the vehicle and only on my inspection and pointing out the issues to CarMax did they pull the vehicle from the lot. This resulted in my cancelation of a shipped vehicle. 3. My fault... Ordered a new vehicle and again it had to be shipped. Now understand this is going on over a 45-50 day period and it was almost 2 months in dealing with a vehicle purchase from CarMax. 4. My observation is that the sales representative helping me was displaying a very negative attitude towards me as I was keyed up on the poor service provided by CarMax and the sales representative through the whole process. 5. Took possession of 2nd vehicle only to discover a damaged windshield, and potentially a brake issue that I need to take back to CarMax for a warranty repair. I have bought cars from CarMax in the past, but after this experience I will no longer do business with this company based on the reasons stated above.
