Was sold a car that was certified to have passed the inspection, when I ran my own carfax report I found that the car had been in an accident, it was reported, sold to auction and then to me within a few weeks. But wait, the real problem is that Carmax never finished the paperwork with DMV, so while I possess the car, I never got a pink-slip proving that I am the owner. I am unable to register the car with DMV, so it is sitting in my garage (since December 2020, its now march 2021). I have been borrowing cars to run errands in case I get pulled over (no registration card, stickers, nothing proving that I own it). I have spoken with Carmax store managers and have been told that they are not at fault. Now dealing with corporate HQ in Virginia and am still have no resolution. Customer service was supposed to get back to me but never did, so when I called again I was given a lot of excuses and promise of a return call that also never came. Warning to those looking into a car, it is worth the money to run your own CARFAX report prior to buying, do not trust the Carmax documentation. My experience has been a nightmare and I see no resolution in site. I have nothing positive to say about my experience with them, they completely screwed me. read more

I have no problem with the buying and selling process, it definitely beats dealing with a dealership. My complaint is about the service department. When I bought my car at Carmax they told me that I could bring it back to their service department for maintenance. However, when I called to make an appointment for an oil change they told me that they don't do "routine maintenance." Which leaves me wondering what they actually do. Wells Fargo would honor it. they got me careless and on hold for 10 days before hold is released. they lie to the customers and laugh about it later. approve people for car loans saying the bank approve but really they didn't. find out the bank didn't when the car gets taken back the next day. We had heard the used-car market was pretty hot during the pandemic, so decided to see what we could get for an old car we had kept around on a just-in-case basis, but was rarely used. We had already ruled out Craigslist because we had heard about the possible dangers of dealing with strangers and large amounts of cash, and filing the correct paperwork, etc. And we knew it was too old to sell to a dealership. So we made an appointment with the nearby Carmax, after checking Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds just to get a ballpark of what the car was worth. The wait was longer than expected, but when they finally got to us, they were very quick, professional, and pleasant. An appraiser took pictures of every inch of the car and within 10 minutes, handed us a printout with a quote and gave us 7 days to decide. That night we decided their offer was very fair and the next day we took the car in with our ID, car's pink slip, all sets of keys & manuals. They had us sign a release of liability form (very important!) and a couple of other documents. They assured us that none of our personal information would be passed along, and told us to cancel the car insurance coverage on the car, as we were no longer liable. They gave us copies of our signed documents and a check for the amount promised. The process was so quick and painless, and the staff was so courteous, accommodating and helpful that I can't imagine doing this any other way. What a great experience! read more

They told us an hour and a half before they closed that they were too busy and there was nothing that they could do. We went to the Carmax about 30 miles away. they took us right away, said because we already had a negotiated online that we could just go over the business office. we had no problem and there was the same amount of people at both of the Carmax facilities so the bottom line is they are lazy at pleasant Hill. They are not in line with the Carmax philosophy and had no desire to accommodate us. I do not recommend them. They really should be closed . read more

So easy! I compared the value of my car online with three different vendors (CarGurus, CarVana and CarMax). CarMax provided the highest offer so I scheduled an appointment and was directed to sign in. Shortly thereafter, Victor greeted me, told me he would take a quick look at the car, take photos and submit the information. Store was clean with vending machines for drinks and snacks in the waiting area. After about 15 minutes, Victor returned, indicated that the offer was approved. He did all the paperwork, provided me with a check all within an hour. I was really impressed with the facility, the staff and the process. I would definitely return! read more

I purchase my Mini Cooper Roadster from a CarMax in Los Angeles. My car was not inspected in LA and had many problems. There were two scratches that went through the paint. This was not the CarMax in Pleasanton's fault. It was the LA CarMax dealerships fault. The run flat tires were so bald they all split at separate times. Four new tires later I needed an oil change and to have the fluids in my car. I went to Big O Tires and they did everything but the computer in my car was still showing I needed an oil change, brake fluids checked and I needed , and I needed my car serviced. This was already done by Big O Tires. I tried bringing my car in last week and BMW told me that if I don't bring it to BMW...they can't update the computer. I called CarMax because I don't have a copy of my extended warranty. The woman I spoke with was so kind and knowledgeable. She gave me a number to the department that handles warranties. The number I called connected he to Otto. Otto was so helpful and kind. He emailed me the documents from my last visit and walked me through what is covered. CarMax is the best! read more

Scheduled for an oil change for my 78k milage Mazda CX-5, I was met on time and with sincere interest for my other concerns; tire condition, filters, brakes, and general operational integrity. Always reassuring, Max completed my service in a super speedy 40 minutes, including a car wash! He even pointed out to me a broken fog light lens I was completely unawares of. I'm really a stickler for detail, but, Super Max manages to keep my family and me confidently on the road. Thank you again Super Max for the amazing service. We walked in with a very fair online offer (much higher than others we'd gotten from local dealerships and sites like Carvana). Car Max is absolutely Awful. Once they have your money and you drive the car off the lot, you are completely forgotten. They were supposed to make repairs on my car, but there was no follow up, calls were not returned despite messages left for several people. Three months later, and nothing has been done and no messages returned. When I tried to talk to a manager, they tried to deter my call as much as possible. We were dropped like a hot potato. I had a good experience with this location. I was able to do all of my car research online. The location was clean everyone was nice. I didnt get a second key to my car so im going back soon and they will get me a spare key. I was thrown off when they said I needed to "sign in" to my payroll account on their computer. I did not like that. Why should ppl trust the safety of Carmax computers. When I set up the appointment with a representative on the phone.... they told me to bring my pay stubs. When i got there i was told that they wouldnt use my printed stubs. That i needed to sign into my paYroll ADT ACCT in front of a sales rep. I felt like i was being discriminated against. I have NEVERR heard of that. (When my went with my husband to The Fairfield location to buy his car..... THEY DID NOT REQUIRE HIM TO SO THAT) this is a very inappropriate process. My issue isn't with the company itself, but a particular employee named Antonio Garciacruz. I had two appointments with CarMax in order to sell my vehicle: the first salesman handled everything very well. I'm not certain of the gentleman's name but he was very respectful, friendly, and professional; however, the transaction was not completed because I was told I was missing a document. He valued my car at $1400. My next appointment was my last, and it was with the aforementioned individual. I was there with a family member and they noted it strange how long it was taking Antonio to appraise the vehicle. He came back offering me $500, nearly $1000 less than it was worth just the previous week, then said there were a multitude of things I needed to do and bring before trying to sell. Excuse me? I ended up going to Carvana in Daly City and they bought it for $1500.:) read more

I was putting $8,000 down on a 2018 Yukon XL. I had to call them, multiple times to get information to get the vehicle ready for express pick up. To much avail I ended up speaking to multiple people regarding coming down for a test drive 15 days after the vehicle was transferred and after having set over multiple documents and them asking me for everything outside of my first born child it seemed that I was given the run around. I was emailed detailed information to who I would be financing with to later be told something told a total different finance company over the phone. They are all over the place. If I could give this establishment zero stars I absolutely would. I have never experienced a car dealership that showed every indication that they had no desire to sell me a damn car in my entire life. I came in to the showroom yesterday (Friday) and without hesitation, despite spending over an hour with a CarMax rep over the phone to make the experience as smooth and as easy as possible, I was turned away with no desire to work with me on my needs. I have worked as a salesperson and sold cars for four years, the staff at this dealership are both young and incredibly inexperienced. The first salesperson I encountered could hardly finish a sentence or answer a question without breaking away to receive help from his manager. After being turned away I went home, found the proper paperwork requested and made an appointment to return the following day (Saturday) to finalize my purchase. I arrived in the showroom a little past 6:30 and was completely shocked to once again be turned away. The reason this time? The dealership closes at 7:00 PM so therefore they simply did not want to sell me a car. Which begs the question: Why does this dealership schedule appointments as late as 6:30 PM if they will turn you away once you arrive because they close soon? This was a complete shock to me. In my time as a salesperson I have willingly stayed beyond closing time to help customers and sell cars, but without any hesitation the young lady and young man at the front desk were quick to tell me that they were closing soon and they didn't want to help me nor sell me a car. I have never experienced anything like this, a blatant refusal to sell people cars. I will never do business with this CarMax location again. It's clear why Fairfield and Pleasanton are the superior CarMax locations. read more

I needed a car because my previous vehicle was stolen. I was more stressed about dealing with car salesmen and finance officers than I was about losing my car. I checked out the CarMax website and was impressed with what I saw. I found a vehicle that I was interested in and made an appointment for a test drive, but the earliest appointment I could get was Thursday. I called them and I was told I could walk in earlier if I wanted to try and do the test drive sooner. I went over there today, and within 15 minutes, a sales rep was helping me. I was impressed with the condition of the vehicle and took my test drive. I was pleased and decided to purchase the vehicle. I am extremely happy with it. It took some time to do the paperwork, but there is no haggling. The price shown is what you pay plus your tax and registration. There is no hassle at all like other dealerships. I was offered an extended warranty, but I declined it and there was no pressure at all. I have to express my thanks to the sales rep, Zaadin Skinner. He is a friendly, respectful young man, and was so happy to help me. If you are looking for a vehicle, but dread dealing with salesmen and finance officers, RUN to CarMax. I would buy a car there again in a heartbeat. Some reviews complained about the wait time, but I think it depends on how busy they are. There was no one there when I arrived, but when I was completing my purchase, it started to get very busy. They also have a great return policy. If I decide I don't like the vehicle for whatever reason, I can return for a full refund within 1500 miles or 30 days, whichever comes first. read more

I love the concept... Who doesn't want to look over an inventory of cars, all the while dodging the shady used car salesman. The prices seemed a touch high, but the quality seemed to be there. WELL ... then they screwed me. I found a car, made an agreement to pick up and buy, had them run my credit (and my wife's ) got all the paperwork lined up, financing done... I was told I could come pick up in about 4 days, could be up to a week. Well a week a week goes by... turns out they sold the car to someone who walked in AFTER we made an agreement and got financed. They super apologized and admitted they screwed up, but they ran our credit reports and had a few others run reports, to get best offers. Dropped each of our credits 8-10 points, and no car to show for it. I saw a few other reviews stating sane thing, but thought it won't happen to me. Well... they got me. Now I'm still looking for a car but credit scores are lower and have been told my rate will be higher. Lame. I wanted to believe it CarMax. I am now on my 3rd visit here in less than 2weeks. The customer service line is comoletely useless and all the things we did over the phone were pointless because we had to redo EVERYTHING in store and the requirements were different. Upon our second visit to purchase the car we were paired with somebody lazy who wanted me to do the paperwork ALL OVER AGAIN FOR THE 3RD GODDAMN TIME. I broke down in tears and the rep eventually asked the previous rep i was working with and then from there things went smoothly. Next day, car starts vibrating. We bring it in the following day (Tuesday) and we are told that even though we LITERALLY just bought the car, we have to wait WEEKS for them to look at and fix a car that they LITERALLY JUST SOLD US TWO GODDAMN DAYS AGO. So if this is not resolved in a manner I feel is appropriate I will be filling a lawsuit read more

First I would like to say Antonio and David made my car buying experience less stressful and worked with me every step of the way especially since my case was a very special one. They were nice and pleasant and glad I was able to walk away with a new car as a birthday gift to myself. What I did not like was that this was my second time here and unfortunately the whole process took about 4 hours at my second visit even after I completed and sent everything they needed in advance. Wanted to see the value of my car so I could trade it in for an EV vehicle. It was easy to make an appointment online. My appointment was at 2pm and we got there about 30 minutes late but they still had a waiting list so we did not get helped around 3pm. While we were waiting to browsed the used car lot but it was a little limited in the EV vehicles. The staff are really good about COViD policies, they make sure that the interior is not at capacity and wipe down the seats at the kioks between each customer. read more

I went to Carmax to get an appraisal on my car - their opinion of trade in value. I called them to get an idea and they would give me no indication of value and said I needed an appointment. I went in and they sat me down and went through a list of questions, one of which was "why am I selling it" I told them my lease is up and it's worth more than the payoff, which I told them was $19,000. It's in great condition, I've babied this thing. KBB told me the trade in value range was 21-22K, and retail value was 23K+ They made me wait about 30 more minutes (in total I was there over an hour). They offered me $19,000. It was a joke. I should not have told them my payoff amount. But they should haven't wasted my time. I was so pissed. An hour for a shit offer. I called Vroom and within 20 minutes they offered me $21,000. read more

In my experience, this is classic " bait and switch" marketing by CARMAX to get me to drive to Pleasant Hill expecting them to buy my car after offering $15,000. I printed out the offer amount. Once at the CARMAX location, I was only offered $13,500. My car was actually in BETTER condition than described in the form which netted the first $15K offer. I left their facility feeling like the company was really trying to take advantage of car owners. I ended up selling my car for $17000.00 myself. I would not recommend CARMAX based on the misleading high ball offers they give on line in order to get you to drive to their store. read more

CarMax corporate as well as the Pleasant Hill branch is all over the place. Inconsistent, waste of time answering the same string of questions regardless of 'notes in the system' from a previous person, and staff could use additional training. Arranged an appt with us and said they have everything they needed from our finance place; they didn't, waste of time spent there. 2nd attempt, the dates were not correct on our paperwork, despite us calling this out 2x (that it was backdated) the response was it was the date the paperwork was generated. Took the vehicle home only to be called/text in a panic from CarMax to come back asap due to the date discrepancy. Resulted in 3 addn'l hours to "return" the vehicle, correct paperwork- with yet another date discrepancy which we stopped and brought to their attention again. They compensated for the many errors, which was very costly due to their poor operations and lack of training their reps. Lesson learned to avoid this company go-forward. I will never do business with CARMAX. I inquired about a vehicle which was out of state and I refused to pay the shipping fee of $1900. They shipped the car anyway then told me the car needed to be reconditioned before I could even view it. So against my better judgement I set an appointment to see the car and it looked just like the photos. I took it for a 24 hour test drive a few days later and brought it back and was told it was too late in the day to process my finance paperwork. There are a few mechanical issues with the vehicle that I wanted to have checked out and the idea of Maxcare was presented to me. ( I have now found out CarMax doesn't stand behind their cars. ) I ended up having health issues and needed to reschedule my appointment and when I came back for the car after being hung up on several times today I was told that the vehicle was on reservation for ANOTHER CUSTOMER. Edward Megia, a manager refused to acknowledge that CARMAX dropped the ball by canceling my reservation even after I called in to let them know what was going on and was told my rescheduling was NOT A PROBLEM. Needless to say I was upset but I learned a lesson in this. They offered to call me if the new customer cancels the sale.. Frankly, they did me a favor because I don't ever want to do business with disingenuous people. That isn't the only vehicle out there and I will find another one but I will NEVER do business with CARMAX since they don't stand behind their word or their vehicles. read more
