Completely lowballed me, thankfully I received an appropriate appraisal via CarGurus!

While looking for a great deal on a certified pre-owned BMW 840i Gran Coupe, I decided that I should start the process of selling my current vehicle (2016 Lexus GS 200T). Based on my previous experience with selling a vehicle to the local CarMax, I figured that I would do the same this time around. Also, the local CarMax had a BMW 840i Gran Coupe in inventory, so I figured that I would test drive the car to see if it was actually what I wanted. Without an appointment, my son and I showed up to receive an appraisal on my Lexus and test drive the BMW. Upon arrival, we were greeted by an employee at the main desk who inquired about our visit and put us on a waiting list. While waiting to be called, my son and I explored the plethora of vehicles (including the 840i). Roughly 30 minutes later, my name was being called on a loudspeaker. Once inside, we were greeted by an employee named Daniel who would assist with initiating the appraisal process and the test drive of the 840i. Daniel asked questions regarding the vehicle's condition (very good condition) and I advised him that the vehicle did have a few modifications (lowered suspension, chrome delete, carbon fiber steering wheel). Simultaneously, he obtained the keys to the 840i so that we could test drive it while my car was being appraised. Here is where things got a little weird. Before handing the keys over to the 840i (FYI CarMax allows you to test drive the car by yourself, which I absolutely love for many reasons), he told me that the 840i was a very nice car and that I needed to make sure that my test drive did not exceed 15 minutes. Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a sensitive person (no offense to my sensitive brothers and sisters); however, his tone sounded very condescending. Almost as if I was a child that did not have any responsibilities, not an almost 40 year old, married father who is gainfully employed (I say that with a humble tone). After the "lecture", I took the keys and my son and I proceeded with the test drive. Thankfully, traffic was scarce, so I was able to put the car on the freeway, open it up a bit, and park it into my garage...it was significantly longer and wider than my current car, so I figured that I should see if it could fit into my garage. My son and I were super pleased with the car and I was sold that it would be the next car for me. Returning to the dealership, Daniel handed me the $15,500 (pretty low in comparison to the Kelly Blue Book value) appraisal offer good for 7 days (the car was appraised by James M.). Although, I liked the 840i that we test drove, I was not fond of the above market asking price that the vehicle was listed at (CarMax has a no-haggle rule). I was highly disappointed by the customer service that we received at this CarMax. Maybe comparison truly is the thief of joy, because I vividly remember how friendly the employees were when I sold my vehicle at this CarMax in 2018. Also, I learned that CarMax does not always offer the highest amount. I ended up submitting an appraisal inquiry via CarGurus and receiving over $2k more for my Lexus (please reference my review for Niello BMW). CarMax of South Sacramento, you must do better!

Sold our car today. Stressless, seamless and easy and got the amount we hoped for. A great place to buy a car and a great place to sell one.

If the payments sound great you test drive the car when you go down and the whole process takes about an hour.

Chris Really cared about us and our situation, what kind of car we were looking for, and worked extremely hard to get us into a car that would be fun for me but also practical for family life. Made the process easy for us and thoroughly answered any questions that came up. 100% recommend this dealership. 100% love my new (to me) car.

Both of those claims turned out to be completely false. When we got there, the car had obvious damage and poor repair attempts that were never disclosed on Carfax or their listing. The front chrome grille was warped/peeling off, and underneath it we discovered the previous owner had clearly hit something - part of the bumper was chipped off, sanded down, and painted a dull matte black that didn't even match the rest of the car. The area wasn't flush and looked like a cheap cover-up. The rear left side had multiple circular scratches, and the antenna was completely popped off, exposing the inside of the roof to rain. The antenna itself had a large white scratch which clearly was it by something hard enough to pop it off and dent the roof of the car. During the test drive, the alarm kept going off on the screen which now makes sense given the antenna damage. We asked several times throughout the process if there were any cosmetic or structural issues to be aware of, and both Gian and Diego repeatedly said the car was in great shape except for a "slightly warped" chrome grille. None of the other major issues were mentioned. To make matters worse, the car hadn't even been cleaned - it was dirty outside, covered in bugs, and the interior had crumbs, dirt, and fingerprints all over the screen (they mentioned this would be detailed inside and out prior to our arrival). Now we understand why they advertise this car as the "best priced" in the market - it's because it's damaged and covered up to appear like a "great value" on Carfax by marking them as having no damage. I never thought a dealership could be this unprofessional and dishonest. We wasted four hours of driving round-trip for a car that was completely misrepresented. If you're considering the 2024 Tiguan SEL R-Line in black, beware - this vehicle is not worth anywhere near $32K out the door. This experience was deceptive from start to finish.
