I had gone to CarMax looking to get a quote on my old car without knowing how any part of the process would work. I had a truly great experience here with the sales consultant Aaron Watts that I would definitely come back for any related matters. I parked my car in the back and went to their main floor room to ask for an appraisal. I did not have an appointment which was fine. There was only one other person ahead of me without an appointment as well and I was seen about 5 minutes later. Aaron came over and introduced himself and I showed him where my car was. I didn't have to move it for the appraisal, just handed over the keys. The appraisal takes about 30 mins and in that time Aaron walked me through the whole process and also showed me some used cars they were selling in their lot. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. I appreciated that there was no pressure to buy a car from them and it was more like he genuinely wanted to help inform me on what my options are. He answered all my questions and was great to talk to about cars. My appraisal came back and he informed me that it was valid for 7 days. No pressure to sign any papers or do anything right then and there. I decided to think my options over and left feeling very satisfied with my experience at CarMax. Been to this place a few times looking around. Don't come in any kind of a rush they always lake forever to get you a sales person. I don't know why because every time i come here it seems like sales people are standing around. This time I went with my GF she was looking for a car four around $7k. But the sales gal kept showing us cars for $9k and $10k. I just figured they could make it work for $7k. We find a car she likes drive it around and after a lot of siting around and wait the inform us they do not negotiate on price. So WTF did you show us all those cars for when we told you we only had $7k. This is where they try to convince her to finance. So let me start off by saying i really enjoyed my whole experience here! It started off with me on the app browsing through the cars because i desperately needed a new one ASAP , well i called and a really nice woman named Vianca answered and she was super helpful, attentive and patient with me. The day i called her i was in the middle of getting my car towed and i had to keep calling her back , never once did she get mad or have an attitude instead she gave me her personal number and remained super friendly . So she helped me pick a great car that was what i wanted and more! Well i was sad because i wasn't going to be able to meet her due to the day my appt. was she was off that day. She referred me to another nice employee named Jiovany he was super patient and attentive as well. He explained everything throughly and i did not feel rushed or like there were any loopholes. I came to carmax to sell my old truck it was a chevrolet silverado and was not running very good. The truck in the condition it was in was worth only about 1500. Anyway I came in to see what they could do for me. I was welcomed by a really nice gentleman named Jim. He took my info and gave my keys to a mechanic to look over the truck. The process took about 30 minutes and they came back with 3000 offer. Needless to say I took the deal. They send you back to there processing office and the staff there were very friendly as well. They cut me a check and 20 minutes later I was on my way. Super easy and stress free experience. I don't know about buying a car here but selling mine here was a great experience and they gave me by far the beat service and price. read more

Carmax is not the place to buy a used car. I spent over $35000 over 8 months ago on a used vehicle and still have not received registration. It is now over due and they are making me drive my vehicle with expired tags. They have not helped me at all. I have been on phone with them over 20 hours now trying to take care of this and still no help. My tags are expired and I still have to make $500 car payments on the vehicle. I can't believe a company this big could do this to people. The Carmax I purchased from was in Duarte California but regardless, even at a corporate level this is a horrible company to purchase something from, they have been absolutely no help at all. I've bought and sold 3 cars at Carmax and am a fan of their no haggle pricing. You can even return your car during the first 3 days after you buy it and they will take it back (I did it and it was really fast and easy). I had a car transferred from Texas to this location and paid a small fee but it was done quickly and without incident. When I have sold cars here the process is fast and easy and both times Carmax has been at least at the Kelly blue book price or above and always better than the surrounding dealers. Roger in the service department has been very good. The price of getting services at the Carmax department is much cheaper for high end cars (like Porsche or BMW) than the regular dealers. Negatives: 1. The service department is small and they have inconvenient hours. They are not open on the weekends at all and often times they are so busy you need to make an appointment a week away. 2. Car Max extended warranty. I've used this warranty a few times and have had things fixed by them. There is a $50 copay and they fix a lot of stuff. However, they will not pay for a rental car until they verify that the problem is covered under the warranty. So, if you drop your car off on a monday and they don't look at it until wednesday or figure out what's wrong until wednesday then you must pay for rental car yourself until they give the OK. Then they will reimburse you for the cost. Kind of annoying. If they say it's not covered or it's your fault then you are stuck with the rental car costs. read more

I came by CarMax this morning when they opened their doors at 10:00am to have a vehicle appraised. I was helped by Donald who was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about his business. Donald explained each and every step and was very easy to speak with. The appraisal went quickly and Donald walked me through every step. Donald explained how long I had to make a decision and what I needed if I came back to sell said vehicle to them. Donald offered me coffee which was a very nice gesture. The CarMax was HUGE; there were plenty of options inside of this dealership. I honestly have never seen a car dealership so clean including the bathrooms. The bathrooms soap dispensers were out of soap and they had placed soap dispenser that you would buy at Target along side of each of the sinks. The folks here are top notch. I have dealt with CarMax in Inglewood before and after visiting the Torrance location I can honestly say if I ever need to come back I will come back here instead of Inglewood. read more

This review is regarding service. I had them work on my car within the 30 day carmax warranty period in which anything that needs repair (including wear and tear like a clutch, brake pads, etc.) are covered by Carmax for free. I had my mechanic look at the car beforehand to find any items that do need replacing, and I gave work order to Carmax for their reference. Within 24 hours, CarMax called and I was told they would need to keep the car to wait for parts & to install said parts. Fine by me - they provided a loaner for free, which is the only reason they get a star. On the third day, I was told the repairs were done but they needed a part to test coolant pressure, and the part would unfortunately take an extra 3-4 days. Whatever, make sure it's done right, I thought to myself. A week passes, and I'm suddenly being told the part they got within the 3-4 day period stated before was the incorrect part, and the part they actually needed was on back order with no ETA. So they said they would take my car to a 3rd party vendor to test the pressure and get everything sorted. Got a call 24 hours later from Carmax stating a leak was found, and the shop was trying to find it to fix it. Might take another day or so. Getting really suspicious at this point. Lo and behold, today, my car is conveniently ready for pick up right when the 30 day Carmax warranty expires. I go to pick it up, of course Melanie, the service person "helping" me, was unavailable because it was close to 6pm when the service department closed. I look at the work order, and they only replaced half of what was on my mechanic's work order. I also looked at the 3rd party vendor's work order regarding the "leak", and it says in all caps: NO LEAKS FOUND. What does all this mean? TLDR (not really)? Took my car in for service under the CarMax 30 day warranty, CarMax then held the car FOR TWO WHOLE WEEKS while only doing half the work they said they would, AND FLAT OUT LIED ABOUT A LEAK TO HOLD MY CAR AN EXTRA COUPLE OF DAYS UNTIL THE 30 DAY WARRANTY RAN OUT. UNBELIEVABLY UNACCEPTABLE. I WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE HAVING A CLAUSE THAT SAYS IF REPAIR WAS DONE, THE 30 DAY WARRANTY IS THEN VOID. BUT DON'T HOLD MY CAR FOR TWO WHOLE WEEKS TO GET OUT OF IT. Sold my car here and had the best experience. Came in with my 11 year old Focus which had lots of scratches, dents, windows that didn't work, gnarly gear shifting, etc. It was definitely time for it to be laid to rest. And who has time to deal with Craigslist and sketchy wishy-washy buyers, really. My offer was exactly what I wanted and expected for the condition of my car, and it came in about 10 minutes. I don't even think they test drove mine. I did clean it out before I brought it in though. I took the offer, signed some forms, handed them my title and registration, and got a bank draft (basically a cashier's check). The whole thing took less than an hour and everyone was really nice and helpful with no pressure at all. I was looking to sell my car asap but wasn't getting any bites from my Cragislist post for my beloved Acura RL. I saw on this food blog I read (yup, food blogs can educate on car selling options too!) that CarMax was a pretty easy option for the blogger so I set up an appointment. 1. Used their online request for appointment form and was confirmed within the hour for a same day appointment after work. Nice! 2. Came in and the appointment guy was ready for me. He grabbed my keys and sat us down in a cubicle to wait. We were the only car getting appraised so he said it should take less than 20 minutes (apparently, there is a whole buying team in the back who take a look at the car and then research what they could buy that car for at auction and the supply and demand - sooooo my imaginings of a slicked back used car salesman coming out in a maroon suit was incorrect and yes, I have weird preconceived notions filed away in my brain). 3. There's a computer in your cubicle showing what's going on in real time - when your car arrived, where your car is in the wait to be appraised, and finally what the appraisal value is. In a weird way it feels like you're waiting for a prize watching to see what magical $ number awaits you. 4. Less than 20 minutes later our CarMax fella was back and loading up their offer on the computer screen...happily enough it was WAY above what dealerships were offering (approx. $3,000 more than what Acura was offering but about $2,000 below what Edmunds estimates for private party sales). Still, I was surprised and tempted to just sell to them to avoid the skeevies out on the internet. 5.Their offer is good for 7 days, though, which was great bc I wanted to give Craigslist just a bit more time and at least I had a solid offer in my back pocket. A couples day later I was able to sell my beloved Acura to a private party at a great price but even so - I will def. keep CarMax in mind for the future. read more

So I walked back here and hit here at 12 straight up. Was told that the guy who called me is out to lunch. Won't be back until 1:15 and they had no other information. My truck was still in the back. Fast forward to today where I wanted to do an appraisal on my current car. Complete waste of time with an associate who seemed like he could not have cared less. From him leaving constantly to check on things (taking over 90 minutes from when I walked in the door) to a low-ball offer that was insulting (I know they have to make their money but as the only owner with all service records I know they underbid by at least $1K), Carmax in Torrance has lost my business and I will not be referring them to anyone else. read more

My experience with this carmax was a bit mixed, i dealt with Joe B. who is awesome and a great salesman, he was attentive, didn't rush and gave a lot of insight and advice on what my wife and i should do. He was great, i went on a thursday (my day off) because my car was messing up and i had to make a long drive , unfortunately the car i wanted was in ontario which is about an hour away and we went early in the morning so i was told it would be there for sure that afternoon, that wasn't the case , i went back on Friday night about 15 minutes before closing, picked up my new car and bounced. That very same night i noticed something was off with the car, it was lagging pretty badly and shaking. When getting a used car and you have only 7 days to return it you have to drive the f@$! out of it, drive it hard, turn the ac on , turn the heater on...Do it all because the car will usually tell you what's up . Anyways i called Joe and told him what was happening and i had two options (take it in for inspection or trade it) being that i had just got it and was returning it the next day for inspection i decided it was best to just trade it , i didn't get a car after mine was messing up only to have it messing up. The trade was easy, unfortunately the other car i wanted was a bit more expensive so i had to put down another 300$ and my payments were about 30$ higher ‍ But Joe , again was pleasant and didn't mind me constantly texting him asking him questions. It was bothersome that i had to pay more for basically the same car but i was hurried for a car . I've had the car for about 2 months now, and so far no issues with it, i drive A LOT . So i'm glad i've had no issues. Do your research , know what you're looking for in a car and know what the signs of a lemon are . I guess it's a hit or miss at any place that sells used cars . Get a good salesman , drive the hell out of the car and get it back before the 7days if it's no good. Also, whenever you trade the car and get another , they transfer everything over , except for your insurance so make sure to call them and let them know, you do get another 7 days to drive the car and that's about all i can remember for now. No one said hello, no one offered help, and the whole time Jonathan was "helping us" he barely spoke and just seemed like he didn't care to sell us the car and like he just didn't want to be at work that day. CarMax as a concept seems okay. The no haggling policy and the overallquality they seem to promise to the client (time will tell) is a better option for me than dealing with 'shabby dealers'. Bray Adams, who was our sales point of contact, however is heavily disorganized and kept walking away to check things during the buying procedure. We spent hours and hours just waiting without being informed why we were waiting. When we had our 10 am appointment and a confirmed wire transfer, he still had to wash the car and fill it with gas which took another hour. There's a lot of personnel not doing anything (they keep asking if they can be of any service)... I'm just not sure what's going on there. read more

I am very happy with this facility. Tony is the salesman you should go to when you are planning to buy a car. He is very honest and does not haggle you to buy any car nor getting any additional warranties like most salespeople would do. Carmax truly stand by their word when they say "no hassle 7 day grace period." This means you can return the car during the 7 days after purchasing it if you change your mind with no mileage limitations or restocking fees. You even get your deposit check back immediately. I purchased a vehicle from them Sept. 2022 and nearly two months later the vehicle started giving me issues. They had it weeks at a time and returned it back to me less than a week later I had to return it back to service for them to "diagnose" and "fix" the issue once again. This has been on going since the beginning of November and is now the end of January. I took it in to get an appraisal to try to get out of the vehicle and turns out what the service department diagnosed it with is not what they say and is actually transmission issues. Every time I have called the service department manager Ricardo, he never answered or returned my calls after leaving voicemails. The guy who helped me out with my appraisal told me if I call that they will keep running me in circles which is quite ridiculous if you ask me. I have had no luck trying to get any help with this issue and no longer will recommend anyone to carmax again. If you can, do ANYTHING to avoid giving them your time or money because they do not care for their customers at ALL. read more

I recently visited this location to get a appraisal done on my vehicle. Upon entering I made my way to the showroom desk l, gave my name and phone # and was told it would be about 10 minutes. After 20 minutes of waiting with no update I approached the desk and asked how much longer it would be. The salesman said that it would be at least another 20 minutes before they could even get to my car. I am not unreasonable, as I understand businesses get busy (this one was overwhelmed), but either give your customers a more realistic wait time or provide them with updates if you can't meet the given timeline. Telling me it will be 10 minutes and then me having to ask to find out it will be more like 40-45 is a big waste of my time. I will not return to this location. read more

This should have been posted in November, so here goes, we decided to downsize our Ram 1500 Laramie pick-up with an SUV/ Crossover. Didn't care for the Durango, or Explorer and turned to GM's lines, i,e, Traverse, Acadia and Enclave and for what we wanted was all about 45g's Then I saw a Cadillac SRX and checked it out and found that new was about 5g's more than I wanted to spend. A friend suggested Carmax and all shapes and makes but with more miles than I wanted. But wait what do I see... A 2013 SRX with less than 12,000 miles on it with every thing we wanted on it, even the color was fine, all wheel drive, everything for a great price. (It had been a manufacturers car) We went down the next day and they delivered it from Ontario. They then took my Ram and appraised at 4g's higher than I thought I would get, done deal! This review was for selling a car. I would give them 6 stars if it would be possible. The first time I went to CarMax was a spontaneous visit. I didn't clean out my car, there was an old muffin in a styrofoam box in the backseat and a bb gun in the trunk. The people at the front desk were polite and the liaison for the assessor was amazing. He insisted that I sit in a comfortable cubicle while they assessed my car- I get self-conscious when alone in large areas. There's free wifi throughout the facility. The assessor was polite, friendly, warm, and informative. The offer was written clearly and easy to understand. When I went back to sell my car- it was the easiest experience. I cleaned out the car- gave them the previous assessment paperwork. I thought they would haggle about the price, but they just directed me to the cashier. The cashier was very clear about the process- she was warm, friendly, and knowledgable. When I realized that I left my sorority license plate frame on the car- I asked if I could borrow a screwdriver to remove it. The cashier was very kind about it and had the mechanics remove it for me and place it in a very nice fabric tote bag. They got me processed quickly and I was out the door with a check. The most important factor was that everyone was extremely nice. Not just polite, but there was a genuine warmth. Everyone. Employees who didn't even have any obligated interaction with me would give me a smile. It's difficult to have such a standard of customer care- anywhere. Of course, the price they offered me was great. The car dealerships didn't even come close to their offer. A sales manager at a dealership told me to go to CarMax ASAP, because it was such a great price that they couldn't even come close. I'm glad I went there and highly recommend CarMax. read more

DO NOT GO here to have a high end vehicle appraised, if you don't want Carmax employees joy riding in your car. I went in with my 2017 Porsche 911 to have it appraised. I expressly let the salesperson who did the initial walk out to the car, know that I did not want anyone driving it. I told him that if an appraisal could not be done without driving the car, I would want to be present in the car when they drove it. And, I let him know that if that was not possible, I would not need the appraisal. He said he would find out, came back and assured me that they would not drive it. An hour later, after I got my appraisal, I went back to the parking area to find my car in a completely different parking spot than where I had left it! What happened to not driving my car???? I did not sell/buy my car here but the experience was very helpful! Made an appointment with one of their sales representative, Saidah, over the phone and went into get my car appraised / possibly shop for a new car. I had to change the appointment schedule multiple times due to my work schedule but Saidah was nice enough to accommodate to my schedule. She already had the car that I wanted to test drive ready and assisted me through all the process and answered all the questions that I had regarding the carmax process. Appraisal was very quick (it was done by the time I got back from the test drive, maybe around 15 minutes?) and I was able to receive slightly lower than KBB value which gave me a good idea of how much my car is worth out in the market. Ended up getting a better deal at a used car dealer but that would not have happened without the carmax appraisal first! (Used dealer literally just said we'll add $500 on top of carmax offer, carmax offers good price on used cars now so we can't go any higher than that). I think buying a car at carmax is rather costly vs dealers but this makes sense as carmax is for people with bad credit and they have no right to complain. Not to mention that the warranty they offer is actually very good too. Overall, it was a quick and easy experience! Definitely recommend going here even if you are not going to sell or buy at carmax as it can be very helpful later down the line! read more

After a terrible car buying experience at South Coast Subaru, I shopped around at many different dealerships to replace my vehicle, which was totaled in an accident. One of my colleagues raved about his experience at Carmax--he has purchased several cars from them and had nothing but good things to say, so I decided to give them a try. I browsed around online and compared the cars I liked to the Kelly Blue Book value, and they seemed very fair and reasonable. Jim Kika went above and beyond to help me. When something went wrong with the transfer of a car I wanted to see he went to the Buena Park lot and drove the car up to Torrance himself. He got the car there by 3pm on the same day, so I was able to come check it out. What wonderful customer service! I was annoyed that the Buena Park lot screwed up, but Jim went out of his way to make it right. Sh!t happens--it's inevitable, but a true measure of a person's character is what they do to step up and resolve the problem. Jim never acted like it was a nuisance, and was very pleasant and patient--even though I wavered and went back and forth making my decision for about an hour. I test drove about a half-dozen cars and narrowed it down to 2. In the end I replaced my 2011 Subaru Forester with a 2009 that had more amenities and a sticker price $5000 less than what I paid for my brand-new car.
