The service for purchasing my car was fantastic as I am very picky, multiple days of shopping and they still hung in there with me. The purchasing was a breeze and had no issues there. The reason it is a 3/5 stars is because the car had a few broken/missing misc. items (not a big deal) as the manager of the auto shop came out to help me order the parts needed... I was told that I would receive a phone call 48 hours or so later, the call never came. About 4 days later I followed up with the shop about the invoice only to hear that it does not exist in there data base, and I have to bring my car back to have them check it out. Initially not a big deal except it would be another 48 hours for the follow up, at which in this point in time I would have to set up an appointment days after to have them slap on a few parts in which anyone is capable. Very frustrating that I'm chasing down $50 or so worth of parts, I am happy with the car and purchasing dept. just not the shop for fixing the issues that needed corrected. Be sure to verify all broken/missing parts in extreme detail and have them put it all in writing... And just maybe you will have better luck then I did. Happy hunting! read more

I have had two exceptional car sales and car buying experiences with CarMax in Torrance. The sales person, Tita, was so easy to work with. She put up with my many text messages and patiently worked with me on the purchase of 2 cars and 2 car sales in a span of 3 1/2 months. I can honestly say that there was absolutely NO PRESSURE, as I've experienced with other dealers at different dealerships. She sat by us as we signed the papers and made sure that the car was cleaned and ready for me at the end of everything. This has been my experience with her twice. I originally bought the first car but after a few months, realized it was too small for my needs. The second car purchase required two cars to be transferred (I paid for one car to be transferred). After test driving both, I chose the car that I felt best fit my needs. There was no pressure to buy the extended warranty. No pressure whatsoever! I highly recommend this CarMax and especially working with Tita!!! She is awesome to work with. And, you feel like she is family, after all is said and done. Buyer Beware! In November 2014, I purchased a 2011 Chrysler 200, from Carmax at the location identified above. On July 1, 2015, I brought my car into Carmax because the check engine light came on. Roger Rodriguez was the customer technician who received the car and processed the paperwork. Mr. Rodriguez informed me that once the problem was identified that they would contact me and provide me with an estimate for repairs. Mr. Rodriguez checked my warranty and explained to me that I have a $500.00 deductible for repairs. In fact, I have a $250.00 deductible. This would be the first of the many lies I have been told by Carmax employees. On the afternoon of July 1, 2015, I received a phone call from Mr. Rodriguez who informed me that my car had a problem with the emissions system and needed a vacuum seal for the gas cap, the car was to be ready the following day and the cost would be $225.72 On July 2, 2015, I picked my car up from Carmax at 2:00 and was informed that the problem was resolved. The following week, the check engine light came back on. On July 10, 2015, I contacted Carmax and I spoke with Ken who identified himself as the service manager who asked that I bring the car back, which I did that day. After looking at it for approximately one hour, Ken informed me that they could not identify the problem and requested that I bring the car back. He assured me that the car was "fine to drive but it just would not pass smog". We made an agreement for me to bring the car back on Monday July 13, 2015. On July 13, 2015, I received a call from Ken informing me that the technician scheduled to work that day was not in and asked me to bring it the next day. I had already scheduled to take that day off of work. On July 14, 2015, I took another day off from work, and dropped my car off with Mr. Rodriguez. He called me later that afternoon at approximately 1:00, explained that it was the "purge solenoid" and that they were replacing it and the car would be ready at 5:00 I arrived at Carmax at 8:00 pm and was informed by the women in the business office that my car was not fixed. She contacted Ken who had already left for the day and he asked her to tell me that the car was again, "fine to drive but it just would not pass smog". He requested that I bring my car back tomorrow resulting in losing another day at work. This morning, July 15, 2015, I received a phone call from Mr. Rodriguez advising me that my car repair was complete and that my car was presently being test driven. I was completely stunned. Having picked up my "non repaired car" last night, my car was not on a test drive it was sitting in my driveway. I brought my car back into Carmax and waited while they claimed to have repaired it once again. I do not believe that Carmax fixed my car. I believe that they charged me for work that was never done. I just filed a report with California Bureau of Automotive Repair. Thankfully, I work for a law firm and will now let the lawyers deal with it. So pissed off! First off, let's start by saying that I go to school an hour away at 1pm-4pm and work 6pm-6am so I really don't have time to drop my car off. Ok, that being said, I call carmax service to schedule an appointment because my transmission is going out. I get my appointment, no problem. My car is under the extended warranty and I try calling back to get some info on a rental. And calling, and calling, and calling and oh wait! Someone picked up the phone..and hung it right up. Call back...no answer, finally I ask for a manager and surprisingly someone from service magically answers the phone. Guess the answering service is only for amusement because no one ever returned my calls. I get my questions answered and my mom drops off my car at my appointment time so I can sleep. When I wake up, I find out that they don't work on transmissions and I need to take it to the Audi dealer. Wow. So why am I struggling to get my car to an appointment for a transmission issue?!?!!? Last time, they took my car to the Audi dealer. Oh they don't do that anymore. I guess it's time to call corporate and complain. They should be more mindful of their customers time. The worse experience I've ever had with a car dealership!!! Most of the employees looked like they had just gotten out of jail! That was my first indicator that I should have left right then and there!!! I came to Carmax June 10th at about 5:38pm. Came in to test drive a 2012 Honda Crosstour and was given Gigi as a salesperson and it was very, very hard to understand her with her very thick spanish accent but I pressed on because she seemed like a nice person. She took forever getting the keys to do the test drive, then the gate was broke so she had to go another way which was irritating to say the least. I asked her questions about the vehicle and she pointed to the glove compartment which was where the owners manual was. You would think that if you work at a car dealership you would take the time to find out information about the car your taking the customer on a test drive!!! Anywho, I loved the way the car drove but I also wanted to test drive a 2012 CR-V. She said we have to go upstairs to the 3rd floor because that's where the SUV's are. Ok so once again she took a good 15 minutes to get the keys for that car!!! When she gets the key, the car won't start so she took another 15 minutes to try to find someone to charge the battery. That happens then she can't drive it because there's something wrong with the steering wheel and a warning sign was flashing every time she turned the steering wheel and it would do this popping action!!! So then she had to call the manager to come which took about 20 minutes. He came along with the guy who had charged the battery and said to test drive another one like until they figured out what was wrong with it. That took another 20 minutes!!! I can't say enough how unorganized this lady is and Carmax! We do the test drive I like the car and want her to run numbers on both. She can't figure out her damn computer to save her life! I had to help her numerous amounts of time it was ridiculous!! We find a loan that fits me for the Honda Crosstour and they don't take credit cards for down payments!!!! What car dealership won't take credit cards for down payments!!!!! CARMAX WON'T!!!!!!! She starts pressuring me to find another source by this time it's 9:30pm and her manager is telling her that they need to close! He didn't say hi or anything and she starts saying to call my insurance company to add the car onto my existing policy but I told her they are closed!!! Well you can't take the car unless you add it to your policy! I've had a many of cars and all you gotta do is call them first thing in the morning to add it on and then schedule a time to bring it in so they can look it over. It's 10pm by this time and the workers in finance are really pissed at me because I guess I was holding them up. They were soooo rude and the manager, I wish I had gotten or maybe even remembered his name but he was an old white guy with white hair who cared more about going home than anything. The end of the story is they tell me to come first thing when they open at 10am to finish up and the salesperson Gigi locks my car keys in the car while the car is running and asks me if I have triple A!!!!!! WOW!!!! There was noooooo hospitality what so ever and the guy even ask me if I have a spare key, of which I said of course it's at home where most people keep their spare keys you fricken idiot! They took no blame at all for it. She said my car locked on it's own which it NEVER does and NEVER has in the whole year I've had it. She was an absolute air head! My husband had to drive me home to get the spare key and drive me all the way back there and the manager was gone but he left her there all by herself!!! What man does that?? We could have come back with guns or kicked her ass and he leaves her there by herself!!! We left at 11:30pm!!! The next day she has the nerve to call me and ask me if I am going to get the car!!! I said hell no and not once did a General Manager call me to rectify the problem at all!!! She kept calling me because she knew she f--ked up! I wish I could give them 0 stars!!! Went to this location to find out how much they'd give me for my 2003 Mini Cooper - answer was NOT MUCH! But the process was straightforward and not too time-consuming. Found out the car had FIVE prior owners, not two, but the good news was no reported accidents or other problems with the car. I visited this place to get a quote to trade in my 2 years old Acura MDX. I didn't make an appointment, but I was greeted by a sales person right away. He politely asked me why I came here and brought me to a desk to discuss the trade in price. That's where the pleasant experience ended. I told him that I had 3 years of payment remaining for the car. Then he told me, without even asking for the remaining balance, that their offer would be lower than the balanace of the loan. I was disturbed, but still proceeded to talk about it, because I assumed that once he found out the remaining balance of the loan, and the current KBB value of the car, he would correct his offer. He then proceeded to show the CarMax website on the desk and searched for the 2 years old Acura MDX. It was similar mileage with similar options. They listed the car at around $39K. 'There you go!', I thought. Even if they take $5K for a profit, their offer should still be a lot lower than my loan balance. He offered me $29K for my 2014 Acura MDX which is in excellent condition. He was trying to make a profit of $10K by buying and selling an SUV. He didn't even want to look at my car. I had to accept that offer to continue the discussion. So, I left and went straight to an Acura dealer. Once I arrived there, they offered me a bottle of water and snacks while they inspected my car. They had to contact buying manager to look up current bidding price of my car. After appraisal and 10 minutes of marker research, they offered me $33000, offer valid for a week. So, dealership offered me $4000 higher than what CarMax offered. It's still unbelievable to me that someone was trying to rip me off $10K for buying and selling a car. That's a borderline fraud to me. Never ever go there to sell a car. read more

If you want to sell your car privately use Kelly Blue book and Carmax then come up with a price somewhere in the middle. We also got an appraisal from where we were trading it in and from the original dealer (and where I have had all the work done as well as we having bought 4 cars from them and it is a 'local' dealership and my car had very low miles) I also looked on-line. I went to the Torrance location a few months ago before I bought my car elsewhere. Nice place with a lot of cars and a helpful salesperson. Totally no pressure. Of course, anyplace that tells you that they have a no haggle, set price, is going to be low pressure. Bottom line is that their prices were way too high. Every car was at least 3k overpriced. I let them run my credit and they showed me where two banks rejected me, but that their own bank approved me at a very high rate. Sounded absurd to me but the whole sales process, and selection was so easy that I was really thinking about it. I shopped around and ended up getting twice the car for the money with an interest rate of about one third of what they quoted me. read more

It took approximately an hour just to be attended by an employee after I showed up for an appointment. I was offered only $2000 for my car after CarMax appraised it. I declined the offer and decided to post an ad on craigslist, auto trader, and cars.com. I was able to sell my car for $1400 more than what Carmax was going to give me and received multiple offers for more than $3200. Don't settle for Carmax because you're basically throwing money away. With a little more time and effort, I got $1400 more for my car. read more

I bought my jeep here a couple years ago but I forgot to write a review till now. Well, I got there and everything was great! The car salesman had answers to all my questions and was very courteous and patient. I think his name was Henry. I had no problems buying the car and while I was there but as soon as I left the lot with my jeep, they seemed to not care anymore about me. A latch was missing from the soft top of my jeep and I brought it back to show them. They said they'd order the part and get back to me. Let's just say, it's been over two years and I still haven't gotten a call back. I made a few attempts to get ahold of them but I never get answers if someone even answers the phone. I should just take me jeep back and demand things but I'm actually really over that company. The good thing is that I love my jeep and it runs great! I will never reccomend Carmax! Not even to my worst enemy. I bought my 2006 Ford Explorer in January of 2014, and since then, have had to continuously take my car into service AT LEAST 12 times. One time, my car was making a weird noise, the service man said it was my tires. I had my tires replaced, and what do you know.?! Noise was still happening. Turns out it was my brakes/rotors that needed replacing. The service man new he messed up so he didnt have me pay. He also washed my car and filled my tank. HAH! Trying to get me to shut up... Then I had a transmission problem. The service men fixed it. A week later, my car BROKE DOWN on me once again. Took it to Ford, they said Carmax cracked the transmission fluid pipe. It was their fault! So i didnt have to pay the 3000$ it wouldve cost me! So so many things have happened and NOW i took my car to get a smog check, and there is an ILLEGAL PART in my car!! The service manager is never helpful and always says he will give me a call and never does. I will never purchase from Carmax and I always tell my friends and my social media to never go to Carmax. If you make the decision to buy a car from here, I HIGHLY recommend the extended warranty. BUYER BEWARE !!!!! They sell lemons atleast that's what I got, I've had my honda civic for less than a yr. I've replaced the control arm, shocks, brakes, both axles, new tires transmission oil change and I've had to pay out of pocket for a few things that the extended warranty didn't cover. Believe me all the stuff that got fixed was because the previous owner didnt do maintenance on the car and knew it had issues and CarMax still resold the car. I barely even run the car if I would have known it was gonna be hell I would have gone straight to Honda and purchased a brand new car that's the truth. And the service dept in Torrance really sucks and everything is always ok w/ the car. The stupid point inspection is bs take a mechanic before you purchase a car. TOTALLY UNETHICAL!! I was recently forced to sell my brand new car due to an unexpected personal hardship, and I had to sell it quickly. I heard that CarMax buys cars and called to make an appointment. The vehicle (which was just days old and had just a few hundred miles) was examined by a "buying specialist" at the dealership. Rather than confirming the value of my car according to the usual industry-accepted standards (NADA value, Kelley Blue Book, Edmonds, etc.), the buyer fabricated a value scenario supposedly based on what he called "data points" (which he quickly glossed over). The price he offered me was MANY THOUSANDS below what I had paid for the car just a few days before. His most coherent rationale for offering me such a low price was because he said that the dealership would re-sell the car for only $2500. more than what they would be paying me for it. Because of my pressing personal circumstances I had to take their offer. When processing the paperwork, the CarMax business office overcharged me $150. on my loan payoff note, even though I handed them the exact payoff quote I had just received from my finance company. I handed over the keys and went home feeling completely taken advantage of. Just a week after my transaction with CarMax I logged on to their vehicle locator website and was able to find my car (which was being offered for sale at another CarMax location). I was shocked to discover that the asking price for my former vehicle had been marked up by $6,000., not by the lower amount on which they supposedly based the lowball offer they made to me. Again, I couldn't help but feel taken advantage of. DON'T TRUST THESE PEOPLE. THEY ARE LIARS!! read more

While I have successfully sold cars via Craigslist in the past, I knew this time I wanted something quick, easy and hassle-free. I had the car cleaned, dropped it off for an estimate, ate lunch and then returned within 90 minutes. Nikka made a fair offer and I accepted. What surprised me is that when cleaning out my Dad's car and turning in they key I suddenly became very emotional, feeling the loss of my Dad while saying goodbye to his car. Nikka was very considerate offering water, tissue and her attention. She was very kind, professional and understanding. Nikka earned the 5 stars when she went the distance and even followed up after her part of the transaction was done just to check on me and listen to a story I had started earlier before I became so emotional. The account/cashier woman and the manager were also both very helpful and efficient handling the bonus paperwork required to settle the sale of my Dad's car. Unlike real dealerships, the people who help you are clearly glorified office bitches as opposed to seasoned sales people; this might work in their favor, if they were actually friendly and good with people; we all know real car salesmen are aggressive, fast talking fake friendly with dollar signs in their eyes, shoving the contract into your grill; Carmax bitches are minus aggression, a bit more friendly, but clearly work for minimum wage or some shit. My husband and I went over to Carmax the other night first time we've ever been there and we got a great salesman and I guess he was training under a guy name Mike and they showed us a car that we were really interested in we test drove it and then we said we wanted to buy it. But then the supervisor said that it was on hold for one of the sales people they had someone coming in to look at it the next day. Ok yes, I was bummed and we left. I called them Wed night and the customer still had not come in to look at the car. I spoke to Mike again this morning still no customer still no information of when they're coming in. HELLO do you want to sell the car or what ? we want to buy it sell it to us it's been over 48 hours. I'm so frustrated. I must admit over all we were impressed with Carmax the sales people were good they appraise our trade in car OK but now holding this car for someone else that isn't even showing up to look at it when we want to buy it is completely ruining the good experience we had. read more

This is our third car from car max they have been good to us... First time for this location. Henry was a great salesman I felt like he was in our side which for Me . The lot is very small compared to Costa Mesa location where we bought all cars . We had a car transported to this location and worked w Henry on it. He was funny and chill thru whole process . Walked out happy... Why I give it four stars cuz when we were paying deposit the cashier made an oops and we had to stay almost an hr later till they fix the glitch with this it dept due to that error. Did they offer drinks nope did I ask for one.... Yes . Still did I get one?? Nope after watching customer after customer come in and out and sign and off they go I am sitting there watching someone on the phone with their support on the phone walking them thru the process. Then finally we get outside its on we need a signature from u here and there and then went good to go but wait where is our envelope?! Car max Hi, I am a doctor and I don't have time to play the game with Car Max's strategy with their costumers. unprofessional, dishonest, and lie to people. I am very very disappointed and unhappy buying this car. The interior has been glued and polished, and exterior has been painted covered. They bought my car (Jaguar) for a few hundreds and they sold me $33,000 car. The car Seems to be brand new BMW 750, 2008 it looked Great inside and outside. At the time of purchase one of the key for the car was not working, navigation was not working...... I asked them if they can show me how to match the garage door opener in the car and they said all when you get the navigation it will work. Then I tried to reach the sale person for the missing stuff for the car left a messages over and over again but I never got a call back from him. I called Car Max I asked to speak to the manager explained the whole thing and he said he's going to talk to manager because she, Manager are not available. So this is an ongoing process they just made my, and my 3 daughter's life miserable. Finally I made a decision to return the car before the 30 days policy. I talked to the manager before 30 days deadline, which was mentioned by the car max advertising and their sales person,... explained about all issues unresolved, she didn't accepted. read more

I really like the car I bought but the next day when I started it up, the low tire light came on and the check airbag light came on. So I took it back and they fixed the problem in two days, tires on first day and airbag on the second day. When I got it home the next day, I noticed dried water spots all over the car, really noticeable on the chrome. When I complained about that, they said they would take care of it. It's still spotted and now I have to get it detailed. Don't ever let them wash your car. Awful job. Now today, three weeks later, the airbag light came on AGAIN! So now I have to take it back again! I thought they were supposed to do a COMPLETE diagnostic on it. Why all the lights and warnings... and the spots??? Like I said, I really like the car so I'm keeping it. I bought my Ford Mustang here a few years back and buying it was easy hassle free(I knew she was the one ;) I did get the warranty package on the car and it has come in handy ... If my AC starts acting funny or if I have any concerns it's there as a piece of mind. I brought my car in recently for a concern and they FIXED it the same Day!! I was so happy I dropped of at 8am told Rodger it was my day off n he said not to worry they'll take care of it, find out what's wrong n give me a call with a claim # for a rental ... Last time they put leather in my car n gave me a rental for a week and I went to Vegas (Free mileage) :D but today it was fixed same day, I was very impressed. Everyone was very kind and friendly, Rodger really takes initiative he takes Carmax to the next level. Bryan also is very patient and understanding and helped with any concerns on the phone. first time I brought a car in for sale the .experience was good second time I brought a car in it was not that good they have many reasons to say why they didn't get you better price even if your car is mint condition inside and out with low mileage too. although they will turn around and sell it at a lot higher price on their lots and use your added features...and transferable dealer warranties as incentives for the new buyer to purchase from them. new tires, new wheels, new battery, transferable bumper to bumper warranty long story short...if you have titled and its it excellent condition get a quote from CarMax and then try to sell it yourself they like it when you need to sell it quickly to them.. sales staff was pleasant not so sure the back room appraisers care what you think. since most likely they never see you anyways... ps..don't bother to come back in a few weeks and expect more they simply will not raise it...not wanting to 'offend' the previous appraiser I think read more

So I had done some research beforehand to have a general idea of the price range. I went there without an appointment and waited just a few minutes. I came to the Service department today to get my VW serviced at 8:15am. I parked and walked in went up to the counter to check in. Untold to me is that you are assigned to a service rep and no other reps can assist you but your specific rep. So I waited...and waited. Finally my service rep showed up and helped a gentleman who arrived after me even offered the man a loaner vehicle. No one spoke up and pointed out that i was there first and had a scheduled appointment. After waiting from 30 minutes or more I was told my work would take "a couple hours" I said good because I have to go to work at 2:30pm..the rep assured me it would be done by then. I contacted the department to check on the status at 1:00pm and my Service Rep was assisting other customers and I was promised a call back..I didn't receive one. I then paid for a Lyft back to the location at 2:00pm to find my service representative out to lunch and my car still unfinished without a real estimation of when it would be completed. They offered to Uber me to work...(they told me to wait outside for it..waited another 16 'minutes for it to show up...i went back inside and they had forgotten to order it) I guess I'm on my own to get back home from work and back to the service center in the morning because i won't be off in time to pick the car up. I'm pretty dissatisfied and disappointed to say the least. The purchasing of the vehicle was flawless but if you plan to ever get service..clear your schedule and make sure you have extra money for rides back and forth. Unbelievable read more

Have to admit at first contact, I had an absolute HORRIBLE experience with Car Max. The website says call for over the phone quote and the guy we talked to at first contact says "no over the phone quotes". Once he realized that was incorrect he went on to give us a quote for a car he found for us at another location. He says the car will be here the next day @ noon and he'll call me when it arrives. Said they would accept a post dated check for down payment. He said that we didn't need to bring proof of income which I thought was strange and that everything was ready to go. I had my wife call in advance the next day and confirm the quote is still legit, he said yes and no proof of income was needed and he'll call when the car is there. We also confirmed again that a post dated check was ok. Noon comes and no car so we decide to roll over and check out their current inventory. We show up and pretty much EVERYTHING he said was false! Quote was good but nothing was entered into the computer, transfers from other locations take 4 DAYS, not next day and a post dated check was NOT acceptable. I was furious. I was ready to walk, then Jeff came into the picture. He helped us look and test other cars and COMPLETELY turned the whole thing around. Got our new quote approved, held the car till payday, got ALL the paperwork in order, walked us through everything and got us in and out so we could go pick up our daughter. This place has terrible service. The guy that sold me the car was nice. Obviously because they were getting money coming in. These people sold me a car that had so many problems with it. I had to press so hard on the brakes to stop even had to pull the emergency stop brake it I was going to smash into the car in front of me. The horn didn't work at all. Ed them back and it just went down heel from there. They tried to protect themselves behind that bs ass sticker that says quality carmax inspection. Long ass horrible story short. I've talked to the store manager I've called and emailed their customer relations and corporate I've talked to their service manager. All of which has done nothin. SAVE YOURSELF THE HEAD ACHE. CARMAX IN TORRANCE IS LIKE YOUR WORSE NIGHTMARE COME TRUE. people tried to warn me about this place but I really needed the car. Guess the jokes on me, should of just listened to everyone read more

I was extremely surprised and happy with the Customer service at Carmax.My Sales person Richard Bralver knew what customer service looks like in the eyes of a consumer. I spent 16yrs as a Customer Service mgr for a major utility and Richard could work on my team anytime. I brought my car in to get it appraised for sale ,I had listed the vehicle on Auto Trader and Craigs list and got more calls from Dealers with cash offer all for the same amount,so I figured why not see what Carmax would offer.Well they came up with the same offer,but added that if I put the stock wheels back on the car they would give me a higher figure. So I get more money and get to keep my custom wheels and tire to sell,sounds like a win win for me. After reinstalling the stock wheels and tpm's I took the car back expecting the run around, got a different appraiser this time but the previous appraiser had put the info in the computer and the new appraisal was the same higher offer he had mentioned.It took approx. 20 min in the office and I was out the door with check in hand. Very efficient everyone was courteous and friendly.Great business model. I would recommend anyone who is having trouble selling a vehicle in today's economy to give Carmax a try. read more

I took my 2002 Honda Civic in to see what they would give me for it after I bought a new car. Several friends told me that they got more than they were expecting at CarMax. Louie helped me and he was very friendly and helpful. They gave me $1500 more than I was expecting based on KBB and I was done with the appraisal and the paperwork in less than an hour.
