There customer service Rep contacted me her name is Emilee R Stevens and after sharing my story with her thinking ok this might go some where ... she got me I was fooled again thinking CarMax might actually understand that when there is a concern they may actually want to address the issue ummmmmmm not the case then I get a call from the manager of the location and he leaves a message and goes to say " if I am not in just talk to anyone on staff " so that tells you how serious he wanted to talk .. I can only encourage you to make your own choice when buying I'm not saying don't buy there but if you walk in with no expectations then you won't be disappointed. Great car-buying experience. After getting the run around from a few dealerships, I finally gave in and went to Car Max. They had just the car I was looking for. It wasnt the least expensive car around but I was willing to pay the little extra to have a hassle-free, EASY, experience. Marc Young was my sales guy. I told him that I did not want to be pressured to buy their warranty plan and he did not pressure me. They have a 5-day money back policy. I heard a noise and took the car in before the 5 days was up and Janie in Service had my car sent to Toyota to find the problem becaause the Car Max mechanics could not find it. Well done! So I decided it was time for a new car and found something I liked at the CarMax in Torrance. I don't like car payments but since I have been saving for a long time, I figured I would make an easy cash transaction. I have an older 07 Honda Civic which was going to be used as a trade in, less cash out of pocket right! I set the appointment online for 3pm. On my way there I received a phone call from CarMax, I did not answer since I don't have Bluetooth and don't want to break the law. Once I Parked at CarMax, I listened to the message and it was from a Sr. Sales Consultant named James (first name), and he wanted to confirm my appointment and ask me some questions. Sr Consultant James had also send me an email basically saying the same thing as in the voicemail but added "I'll need to speak with you to ensure we make the necessary arrangements to reserve the time you requested" I replied to the email and was about to call Sr Consultant James, when he sent me a text and informed me the appraisal system is down and we cannot appraised your car right now..really?!? I made the appointment at about 1pm, Sr. consultant James had plenty of time to call me or email regarding the appraisal system. Instead Sr Consultant James waited to call 15 minutes before the appointment time. I'll take my business elsewhere, and reader you should too. read more

I've never written a review even tho i've been a yelper for quite some time. Had to do a recommendation here for the superb service this CarMax location had provided me. In the past few months I'd been trying to get a quote on my car, which was in a minor accident and the insurance company filed a wrong title erroneously on. The salesperson Rick and buyer Nancy were extremely patient and helpful during the entire process (I had to drop in to this location 4 times to finally get a fair estimate in the end due to the incorrect title). The final quote came out very satisfying, although I ended up selling the car to a friend who was willing to offer 1k on top of the CarMax quote. I would've totally sold the car to this CarMax for its offer and the hassle free process if it wasn't for the friend's slightly higher offer. Everyone here had been very friendly during my 4 visits and I would totally recommend the Torrance location. If possible, make an appointment with Rick. He's extremely personable and knowledgable of the process and everything you probably need to know about selling your car here. I don't think you get to choose which buyer to look at your car but as I'd been helped by Nancy, I was happy with her assistance as she knows her stuff and explains the appraisal process thoroughly, and is also willing to go that extra mile to make you feel like you're a valuable customer even though I didn't end up doing business with them. After calling local used car dealers and checking with the Kelley Blue Book, I decided to call Car Max to sell my car. First no used car dealer wanted to see my 21 year old Honda civic. They said junk it with out seeing it. I was the original owner and car had original interior and paint.Everything worked ac/heat etc. It had $100,000 miles. I called Car Max last Friday and Greg was interested in my car. The whole process from showing my documents, getting the valuation and my check was less than an hour. The valuation person did a thorough and honest assessment of my car. My car was $39 less that Kelley Blue Book and $10 less than Car Max scale. I was happy. I got top dollar for my make Honda and low milage and good condition of my car. Lizbeth who handled my paperwork was friendly and efficient. Greg helped get my uber ride and waited with me until it arrived. I would recommend Car Max Torrance to everyone. Ask for Greg. He is the best. read more

This location was ok....but when you go to buy a car you expect a little better. U had a fiat I wanted to look at so I made an appointment and was already approved for the financing. Wen I went to check the car out we had a lady come help us. I honestly don't remember her name but I have her card sometime if I looked for it. She seemed a little low energy..pretty much it felt like she had other stuff to do that was more important. Did not really sell up the car...in fact I even went to look at another one and she was just there to open the door pretty much. The one thing that really bothered me was that the car was dirty. It had sap all over and sticky residue on the dash.i asked if they could clean that off and she said that she would tell them. Long story short they dis not really clean the car...they forgot to put back the air caps on the wheels and they did not top off the coolant..it was under minimum . I pretty much sold myself the car. Not sure if they get commission but it doesn't seem.like it. I would recommend this place if you don't want to be bothered by people and already know what uou want. read more

I had a wonderful experience at this location. I went to have my car appraised, and the process was the quick, painless 30 minutes that Carmax advertises. Jimmy White was my sales consultant and he was wonderful! Very friendly and helpful. The quote was actually a bit above Blue Book value for this type of sale (dealer), which was great news. I returned the following day to complete the sale, and everyone in the Business Office was great, friendly, and efficient, as well. A salesman who was waiting in the business area with his buyer even took me to the employee break room so I could get some coffee. Jimmy came over to say hello while the office drew up my paperwork, and he took the time to oblige my request to take a photo of me in front of my (now former) car before they moved it. All in all, it was a completely painless, stress-free, hassle-free experience that, between appraisal and finishing the sale, took less than an hour and a half. I would HIGHLY recommend this location to anyone looking to sell a car for a fair price and endure absolutely no stress. Edited to add: The home office of Carmax (located in Virginia) also provided me with stellar customer service. I was nervous that the payoff to Toyota Financial (who held the title to my car) would not occur before my bill was due, and I didn't want my credit tarnished by a missed loan payment for a vehicle I no longer own. They told me payoff is typically made within 10 - 15 days of the sale, however my payment was due just 6 days after sale. The customer relations department and the payoff department were on top of things, and scheduled the payoff for the day before my loan due date. I secured an extension with Toyota just in case, but it wasn't needed. I checked my loan account online and, as promised, Carmax had paid off Toyota 5 days after purchasing my car. If you don't feel like dealing with Craigslist, and don't want to be insultingly under quoted at a traditional dealer, definitely consider selling your car to Carmax. read more

I'd had issues getting the title from DMV, and when I came in with the title (rushed & fedex'd overnight from DMV - long story, they paid for that, their error!), and it turned out the title was not fully processed by DMV (we discovered this during the appraisal of my car), JD let me leave the car there overnight until the title was fully processed. I Went into carmax to purchase the 2nd car I have purchased from them this year. unfortunately due to covid none of the staff I had worked with previously was currently there. instead we had a group of sales people that were brand new, untrained and did not know or were familiar with any of the inventory. To make matters worse I came in based on a national published advertisement on a jaguar. the ad clearly stated that it had a rear view backup camera after ascertaining that it was missing certain items off the description, I brought it to the attention of our sales person who's name was Luis,. He knew nothing about the car. We then called over the manager Rebecca who then brought over I guess her boss Stephanie to re evaluate the car. As I was correct there were a few items missing off the advertised description including the rear view camera. I told them I was still intrested in purchasing the car today if they adjusted the price because more than one of the items described in the advertisement was missing on the car. Not only did they refuse to adjust the price but they told me that if the car in fact had those items the car would have its price increased. I was lured into carmax with false advertising. I do not like being taken advantage of and the old "Bait and Switch" doesn't work. please avoid carmax at any cost. they are dishonorable dishonest disreputable and they practice the bait and switch. they do not care what the customer thinks. horrible customer service. Bought a 2015 fiat 500e Saturday November 5th only to find out by Monday that the charger is faulty. Returned to carmax, was told I would receive car back on Monday the 14th. Due to the fact that charger needed to be ordered. On Wednesday I returned the defective fiat and purchased a 2012 BMW 328i. On my drive home I noticed alignment was off. I took to carmax next day and was instructed to bring next morning. Friday November 11th at 8:15 a.m. I dropped off car. Not giving any pressure I was told to wait for an hour, having waited 4 hours with no call or sight of service attendant, I walk in to service station and ask for update, I am told it's a barring and will need to be serviced that a loaner will be provided. She mentioned she was just going to lunch so I asked if she wanted me to wait. As if I had not already waited 4 hours. She said yes to come back in a hour. I did we agreed on 1:30 at 2:00 pm. I was given worst possible news. The car is not fixable and I have to return the car. At 3:00 They gave me a loaner and asked me to come back to purchase another car. With absolutely no sense of urgency whatsoever, I pleaded with the service attendants get me out in a timely manner, I was clear on the time I needed to be gone. This is the second time I've been sold a car which should not have been on lot or even sold to me to begin with. I've spent well over 24 hours at you facilities this week. I don't care to go back. I would like the car I purchased with everything that was promised. Help! This cannot be OK seriously, please have a manager of some sort help me. As the sales woman that sold me the fiat, unhappy I did not buy the BMW thru her, brushed me off with a smirk when I pleaded for assistance today. Please please please end this nightmare. UPDATE!!!!! a month later and NOTHING HAS BEEN RESOLVED! I found it odd that there was no urgency whatsoever on the matter from carmax's end. I would call every week if not daily Joe Anthony and sales rep to get a update on any available cars (as they had told me that they would inform me of any that haven't hit the showroom.) I was NEVER Shown the fabulous car that they were promising to have....... I don't understand why this was such a nightmare, I made it very simple I gave them three choices within days of initial problem, that I would be happy with. THEY DENIED MY REQUEST EXPLAINING THEY WOULD NOT COVER TRANSFER FEE, THEN DAYS AFTER AGREED TO PAY TRANSFER FEE BY WHICH TIME CARS HAD BEEN SOLD. OK so we wait....... weeks later I get an alert from my credit monitoring service that I have a new car loan for 25k I check my credit report and yes there it is a new CAR LOAN FOR A CAR I DO NOT HAVE HAS BEEN PROCESSED!!!!!!! I call carmax And speak to SAPRINA and immediately, the truth comes out, I am told by Saprina that I have been the difficult one and that I am making the process difficult by making the selection of the car difficult. Is this real LIFE?!?!?!?!?!??!? how am I making this difficult?!?!? so I proceed to ask her why they processed the loan to a car to witch I have never had possession of? her immediate answer was " are you buying elsewhere?" this really made my blood boil, I THEN REALIZED WHY THERE WAS NO URGENCY AS I HAVE BEEN TRAPPED BY CARMAX SINCE I NOW HAVE A CAR LOAN FOR THEIR CAR!!!!! I CANNOT BUY ELSEWHERE AND AM COMMITTED TO THEIR OVERPRICED CARS AT RIDICULOUS RATE! I returned the loaner car and asked for my deposit back which was another headache just to get back. I went to this place on recommendation from a friend before I tried to trade in my vehicle. I had done research on edmunds & blue book - but thought it couldn't hurt to see what they had to say. The place is so large it's a little intimidating. Add in all the sales staff & your preconceived ideas of a used car sales lot are forefront in your mind. BUT to my amazement- the staff could not have been nicer- and NOT trying to "SELL" me anything while they evaluated my car. I kept waiting for them to try to make me look at the lot - but no one did - instead they very quickly looked at my car & gave me paperwork & a GREAT quote for my car. After all was said & done, that quote was so good, no dealer could match it & I went back & sold it to CARMAX after I had bought my new car from the dealer. I was given $1500-2000 more than the dealer was willing to give me on it! Maybe I could have gotten more by selling it private party but who wants that hassle?? The process was so easy, I would go back to them in a heartbeat! Great service, easy to understand & overall GREAT experience!! read more

First time purchasing a car from Carmax back in July of 2016. THIS WILL BE THE ONLY TIME I WILL EVER PURCHASE A CAR FROM CARMAX! Here's my entire ordeal! Within 2 months the 2007 Lexus GS450H Hybrid I purchased from Carmax in Torrance, CA needed an oil change so bring it's my first hybrid vehicle I've ever purchased, I didn't want to just take it to an ordinary mechanic for an oil change. So I decided to take it to a Lexus dealership (paid $80) and the dealership told me that the rear shocks of my car were leaking and needed to be replaced (cost was $1500), but I let it go since I didn't want to fork out the money (yet). Within days after my oil change, I was driving in the freeway and the check hybrid system message came on along with the check engine light. I immediately took it to another Lexus dealership (paid $130 for a diagnostic fee) and the service advisor told me that I needed a hybrid battery (Cost is $7000) and he also mentioned the shocks as well. I wasn't in the best of moods for obvious reasons! I drove the car for a few more months hoping it doesn't breakdown on me and I even took it to another place the specializes in Lexus hybrids to see if it would cost less (it did! $5500 for both the hybrid battery and rear shocks)! I was a little happier since it's lower! NOT! So I decided to take it back to Carmax to see how much they would buy it back for. They appraised it for $10.000 5 months later and by the way, the sticker price was $16,998! I decided to keep it since I would have to come out of pocket either way! Fast forward to about 3 weeks ago! I decided to call their customer relations department in hopes of a resolution that would benefit me a little. My car has been at carmax in Torrance for over 3 weeks now and the phone call I got from Ken the service manager last week was not at all favorable since he said that carmax will not participate in assisting in paying for the repairs. I then called Crystal from their customer relations department to let her know my concerns. She said that she will work with Ken to see if there's anything that the store is willing to do for me, but no promises. I get the another phone call from Ken today with the same answer. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED WITH MY EXPERIENCE THAT I WILL TAKE THIS MATTER TO ANYONE I CAN UNTIL CARMAX ADMITS THAT THEY SOLD ME A LEMON! YOUR CLAIM OF DOING A 100 POINT INSPECTION ON EVERY CAR YOU SELL IS FALSE! This will not be the last time you hear from me. I WILL NOT, I REPEAT WILL NOT RECOMMEND CARMAX AT ALL. read more

My experience at CarMax could not have gone any better. I went in to look at used cars with no appointment and was warmly greeted by two reps who were super helpful. Within 5 minutes of browsing cars Mike Rosenberg assisted me and was patient, incredibly knowledgeable about all the cars, kind and just a joy to work with. I feel he really cared about finding me the right car according to my wants/needs. He put the car on hold for me and I returned a few days later to purchase it. Mike even went above and beyond and helped me pair my phone with the car - and he was super patient while doing that as it took a little bit longer than usual. I wish all sales people could be like Mike. Truly changed my perception of buying a car as I was kinda dreading it and it truly was actually a good experience. I have had two exceptional car sales and car buying experiences with CarMax in Torrance. The sales person, Tita, was so easy to work with. She put up with my many text messages and patiently worked with me on the purchase of 2 cars and 2 car sales in a span of 3 1/2 months. I can honestly say that there was absolutely NO PRESSURE, as I've experienced with other dealers at different dealerships. She sat by us as we signed the papers and made sure that the car was cleaned and ready for me at the end of everything. This has been my experience with her twice. I originally bought the first car but after a few months, realized it was too small for my needs. The second car purchase required two cars to be transferred (I paid for one car to be transferred). After test driving both, I chose the car that I felt best fit my needs. There was no pressure to buy the extended warranty. No pressure whatsoever! I highly recommend this CarMax and especially working with Tita!!! She is awesome to work with. And, you feel like she is family, after all is said and done. The service for purchasing my car was fantastic as I am very picky, multiple days of shopping and they still hung in there with me. The purchasing was a breeze and had no issues there. The reason it is a 3/5 stars is because the car had a few broken/missing misc. items (not a big deal) as the manager of the auto shop came out to help me order the parts needed... I was told that I would receive a phone call 48 hours or so later, the call never came. About 4 days later I followed up with the shop about the invoice only to hear that it does not exist in there data base, and I have to bring my car back to have them check it out. Initially not a big deal except it would be another 48 hours for the follow up, at which in this point in time I would have to set up an appointment days after to have them slap on a few parts in which anyone is capable. Very frustrating that I'm chasing down $50 or so worth of parts, I am happy with the car and purchasing dept. just not the shop for fixing the issues that needed corrected. Be sure to verify all broken/missing parts in extreme detail and have them put it all in writing... And just maybe you will have better luck then I did. Happy hunting! read more

Buyer Beware! In November 2014, I purchased a 2011 Chrysler 200, from Carmax at the location identified above. On July 1, 2015, I brought my car into Carmax because the check engine light came on. Roger Rodriguez was the customer technician who received the car and processed the paperwork. Mr. Rodriguez informed me that once the problem was identified that they would contact me and provide me with an estimate for repairs. Mr. Rodriguez checked my warranty and explained to me that I have a $500.00 deductible for repairs. In fact, I have a $250.00 deductible. This would be the first of the many lies I have been told by Carmax employees. On the afternoon of July 1, 2015, I received a phone call from Mr. Rodriguez who informed me that my car had a problem with the emissions system and needed a vacuum seal for the gas cap, the car was to be ready the following day and the cost would be $225.72 On July 2, 2015, I picked my car up from Carmax at 2:00 and was informed that the problem was resolved. The following week, the check engine light came back on. On July 10, 2015, I contacted Carmax and I spoke with Ken who identified himself as the service manager who asked that I bring the car back, which I did that day. After looking at it for approximately one hour, Ken informed me that they could not identify the problem and requested that I bring the car back. He assured me that the car was "fine to drive but it just would not pass smog". We made an agreement for me to bring the car back on Monday July 13, 2015. On July 13, 2015, I received a call from Ken informing me that the technician scheduled to work that day was not in and asked me to bring it the next day. I had already scheduled to take that day off of work. On July 14, 2015, I took another day off from work, and dropped my car off with Mr. Rodriguez. He called me later that afternoon at approximately 1:00, explained that it was the "purge solenoid" and that they were replacing it and the car would be ready at 5:00 I arrived at Carmax at 8:00 pm and was informed by the women in the business office that my car was not fixed. She contacted Ken who had already left for the day and he asked her to tell me that the car was again, "fine to drive but it just would not pass smog". He requested that I bring my car back tomorrow resulting in losing another day at work. This morning, July 15, 2015, I received a phone call from Mr. Rodriguez advising me that my car repair was complete and that my car was presently being test driven. I was completely stunned. Having picked up my "non repaired car" last night, my car was not on a test drive it was sitting in my driveway. I brought my car back into Carmax and waited while they claimed to have repaired it once again. I do not believe that Carmax fixed my car. I believe that they charged me for work that was never done. I just filed a report with California Bureau of Automotive Repair. Thankfully, I work for a law firm and will now let the lawyers deal with it. I would never buy a car from these people again. read more

Went to this location to find out how much they'd give me for my 2003 Mini Cooper - answer was NOT MUCH! But the process was straightforward and not too time-consuming. Found out the car had FIVE prior owners, not two, but the good news was no reported accidents or other problems with the car. So pissed off! First off, let's start by saying that I go to school an hour away at 1pm-4pm and work 6pm-6am so I really don't have time to drop my car off. Ok, that being said, I call carmax service to schedule an appointment because my transmission is going out. I get my appointment, no problem. My car is under the extended warranty and I try calling back to get some info on a rental. And calling, and calling, and calling and oh wait! Someone picked up the phone..and hung it right up. Call back...no answer, finally I ask for a manager and surprisingly someone from service magically answers the phone. Guess the answering service is only for amusement because no one ever returned my calls. I get my questions answered and my mom drops off my car at my appointment time so I can sleep. When I wake up, I find out that they don't work on transmissions and I need to take it to the Audi dealer. Wow. So why am I struggling to get my car to an appointment for a transmission issue?!?!!? Last time, they took my car to the Audi dealer. Oh they don't do that anymore. I guess it's time to call corporate and complain. They should be more mindful of their customers time. We have never encountered a more honest and informative salesperson as Mike at the South Bay Carmax. We we looking for a specific type of car with a trade in. Mike did not have a car we wanted but spent so much time looking for one and giving us all the pros and cons of each one. He is still looking for a car for us and we feel so comfortable with him and the company we will probably only buy from him. His estimate for our trade was also very fair.
