Most of the damage to the vehicle I purchased happened at Carmax while it was being processed. I had an SUV shipped from a Carmax in Colorado to this facility. It had a few very minor scratches that were documented. I inspected the car first thing and it looked good and I asked to take it out for a drive and we began some paperwork to make it happen. The salesperson pulled the SUV into a receiving area for my test drive. While getting in, I noticed multiple vertical deep scratches on the driver's side door I hadn't noticed when I did my preliminary walkaround inspection just 20 minutes earlier. They were actually more serious than any of the minor documented scratches disclosed when the vehicle was shipped so I didn't understand how they could have been missed. I mentioned it to the sales rep upon return and was promptly dismissed. He didn't seem concerned at all and urgently ran off to return the car to the secure lot. Maybe they became more noticeable from the different lighting and direct sunlight. He mentioned later that he had trouble putting the lockbox back on the window because it kept rolling back down while he was trying to resecure it in the full up position. The plastic wind guard trim didn't help, Im sure. Apparently the car was detecting the lockbox as an obstruction as if there was a finger in the way triggering it to fully retract as a safety feature automatically, taking the lockbox down with it. I didn't think much about his comment at first, but put it all together after the fact. When the window was rolled down, the heavy lockbox Carmax struggled to hang on the window glass scratched the door...multiple times as they were fussing with it. The scratches are vertically aligned and exactly below where the lockbox was. Most scratches are horizontal, so these were odd looking. They weren't disclosed in the car listing because the car was most likely damaged in the care of Carmax after I paid to have it shipped. Since I am already into the car for shipping costs, no matter what I do, even if I return it, I'm out at least the $800 I sunk in shipping. So even walking away would be really expensive. The 2023 SUV only had 5K miles on it. Now I own it, and it looks like hell. I'm actually ill over this for not being more assertive. They ruined a really great SUV and stuck me with their sloppy damage and negligence. It looks like it was aggressively keyed. What I ordered and shipped, wasn't what I got. Now I get to drive it around, potentially for years, looking like someone who gets their car keyed. BUYER BEWARE. Don't give Carmax ANY money in advance. Don't have a car shipped. Just wait for the right one to pop up locally. Before you drive away, do a final inspection and match up any damage with what was originally disclosed. read more

After doing a little research on their website and submitted her information, she received a text message that prompted her to enter the vehicle information and to upload photos. Waited 3 hours for customer service even though salespeople were standing around. We knew the car we wanted so we decided to wait. By the time we got help it was too late to finish the deal so we had to return the next morning. For some reason they had to void the transaction from the night prior and start over which dinged our credit twice resulting in less favorable finance options. All of this plus attitude about being Oregon residents and we had to prove it with more than our license and insurance like we were trying to scam was really the last straw. This was a little to easy, I found a suv hybrid that would work for me. However it was at a CarMax in the Seattle area, that would have been a long drive. With CarMax I was able to reserve it, and have it transferred down to the Vancouver location. It was there in like 2 days. I had my trade appraised online, and was happy to see they were offering me 10% more than any other dealership. I also applied for financing online, and was approved for a better interest rate, than my Credit Union was offering. This all seem to good to be true. Showed up for my appointment about a hour and half early. Didn't have to wait long. Took the car out in a test drive. Decided it was in fact what I was looking for. They verified my trade, and nice, they gave me the same amount that they told me online that o would get. It's interesting, this type of dealership, they asked me if I wanted service plans, it was a yes or no question. No pressure at all. Since Kia is a 23 with less than 3K moles on it, I opted out, as it still has the factory warranty. It was pretty quick, less than 2 hours in house from arrival, to leaving. I like this hassle free way of making a purchase. And I very much like the fact, if they don't have in stock what you are looking for, there is a good chance, they have it transferred in for no extra fees, or commitment. Had a great experience here. I was trading in my car and getting a truck. I paid to have the car shipped from another state. They let me know when it arrived. They did a final check and cleaned it before I arrived. I did all the financing online beforehand but still had to sign some things in person and I did a test drive. I was out of there in just under 3 hours but didn't feel like I experienced the gross car dealership vibes. They don't push you into the warranty. There is no haggling the price. A bank that has had 49 individuals file lawsuits for predatory lending practices and has had a 93 million dollar improper car repossession class action settlement filed against them. Alright so about 3 years ago I was a super desperate and super uneducated in the realm of cars. I was 21 and alone with no one to help guide me or tell me right from wrong in the car buying scene. So I went to CarMax because I heard good things about them in regards to not taking advantage of you or making commissions from your purchase. So I go and look around at the cars on the lot not knowing what I was in for. I had just started building my credit and so I only qualified for one car they had. A 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback. Super cute and only with 70,000 miles on it. So I'm sold and we start going over the lender details. I was approved at a 28% interest rate. And mind you I hadn't even known what an interest rate was because I didn't have anyone in my life that explained that to me. I was signing up to pay $490 a month for 8 years. I asked the guy helping me if that was a high interest rate and he replied "it's a little high" not knowing that a high interest rate would be 8% let alone 28%. But he continued to tell me that I could easily refinance in 6 months and all would be well. It's been 3 years and I've paid $16,000 on a $5,000 dollar car and still owe $13,000 . I was loaned by American Credit Acceptance $16,000 but with interest I will have paid $35,000 over the span of 8 years. Why haven't I refinanced? Oh I've tried. I have good credit and have been on time with my payments. No dealership wants a car that's worth maybe $5,000 in prime condition with $13,000 still owed. No bank will refinance it because of the negative equity. When I pay almost $500 a month for my car only $200 is going towards the actual principal amount when the rest is going towards interest. I am stuck in an absolute nightmare. And come to find out AMERICAN CREDIT ACCEPTANCE (the bank I got my loan from) has had 49 individuals file lawsuits against them for predatory lending practices and CARMAX KNEW THIS. THIS IS PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. So if you'd like my opinion on CarMax take your money somewhere else. They work with banks that use illegal lending practices just to gain sales. read more

Overall, both of my kids have bought cars through CarMax with little to no problems. HOWEVER... I am currently helping my daughter get out from under a predatory loan with Santander Consumer USA. I would like to know how the CarMax representative could present someone loan paperwork with a 24.03% interest rate with a straight face? Irresponsible at best. Horrible human being at worst. My 3 month old even slept the entire time without a care in the world. There would documents we were missing and they helped us get them online and everything. We traded in and purchased a vehicle in August 2023 from this CarMax location, and the following months have been incredibly frustrating. CarMax owes us nearly $350 from this transaction due to an accounting discrepancy (they sent a different amount to the bank to pay off our trade-in than what was agreed upon in the purchase order). I have spent hours on the phone and in person attempting to get our money refunded. Numerous managers have agreed that this money is owed based on the transaction accounting, though we have not seen the $350 (nearly seven months later). Fast forward to this week - we decided to give CarMax another chance as they had a vehicle we were interested in, though of course frustrated by the previous experience. Following our test drive, we were shown a "clean" report on the vehicle, indicating no accidents or other reportable information. After spending nearly three hours at the dealership, we were in the midst of completing the financing process when our bank notified us that the Carfax report showed an accident where the airbags deployed, as well as an odometer rollback. None of this was disclosed by CarMax!!! Needless to say, we cancelled the transaction on this car. We located a similar vehicle at a different dealership in Beaverton, and had a better and more professional experience with staff from the moment we walked in the door. However, upon appraisal of our vehicle for trade-in, we were shown several locations on the car that indicated the vehicle had very clearly been in one or more collisions, and was repaired poorly. Again, absolutely none of this information was disclosed during our purchase of that vehicle with CarMax in August. We are incredibly grateful to be out of our CarMax vehicle, and will not be returning. read more

Made an appointment to test drive the car I wanted, did the trade setup online, had all my ducks in a row. Got there at appt time, worked with the gal to get my info setup for insurance, etc. Got all done, they brought car up to drive, we looked it over, noticed the tires were less than 40% tread, so, knowing we just replaced ours two weeks ago, asked if they could swap the tires-we let her know that we will cover any cost incurred to do this. She said while we were on our test drive, she'd ask the manager. We test drove the car, loved it, got back, she said the manager said no on swapping the tires, so we said no to the sale. Now, to some, this may seem silly, but it was the principle-the car we were looking to buy was quite expensive, my car would bring them at least 5k on top of what they were offering me. Then, to top it off, got home, daughter said when she and hubby bought from same Carmax, the car they purchased needed tires, so they asked the sales person to put new tires, and he did it. read more

I teach people how to be managers and entrepreneurs. I see in CarMax something that is difficult to imitate - a caring, fair, and friendly culture of professional salesmen. Professional sales, is not "how do I sell the most" it is "how do I help a customer feel like they have found what suits their needs." Used car sales is awash in people seeking commission, people trying to sell you something, people trying to get as much as they can out of you - not at car max. At CarMax they are trying to help you find the vehicle that will meet your needs. Doing so means you're going to pay about the middle range of a certified-used, and upper range of a dealership, price. But by paying more, you'll often end up paying less! Take my most recent experience for example: I was interested in a car for about $30k. Having just come off of a horrible experience with a used car place that quoted one out the door price then tried to charge more, I knew going back to CarMax, even if the price was $300 less at a local dealership, was the right idea. I test drove it. When we finished the test drive, the dealer had lined up 4 similar cars next to it so I could compare; even though I hadn't asked. The $30k vehicle was the highest price of the three mind you; so he was actively seeking to sell me a car that cost LESS than the one I was in! I tried one of the less expensive vehicles and it had a feature I loved (a forward-back sliding middle row); AND it was $25k! It doesn't stop there - We then went back to the computer; and I was ready to buy. But the salesman said "let's see what we have online, so we can make sure you get the features you want." There was one feature my wife wanted (auto-pilot). So we looked over the cars that were free to transfer. Boom - we found the same car as I just drove, with auto-pilot, for $21k. Placed an order and set a guarantee to try that in 3 days. That's a $9k SAVINGS because I was willing to pay $300 more for professional sales. And that's CarMax - They want you to explore and find the right car, even if it's thousands less than the car you had in mind at first! That night I told my wife and we checked the IIHS crash ratings between the two cars. Both were very safe, but the one we first looked at was a little safer (green instead of yellow in the 3/4ths offside front row passenger crash). Because this is the most important priority for us, we went back the next day and purchased the original car. Financing was fantastic. First, they offered me a fairly competitive rate against my above average income and exactly-average credit. Second, if they can't offer financing in house, they send it out to numerous places that can make an offer. Third, I got a loan from my bank at payments of $575 instead of $600; so I'll come back within 3 business days to replace my bank's loan with their loan. Max Care. I've had MaxCare on 2 of my 4 cars now. Including this most recent one. When the AC went out this summer I needed it fixed; to be honest, I forgot I had max care! Had I remembered, I could have had Gaynor fix the 2k problem with the AC for the $50 deductible. I suggest scoping out the CarMax web page, making an appointment, and spending time with CarMax. Their service, attention, and culture of caring is cannot be imitated. Car per Car you'll pay a few hundred more than if you haggled at a used car place - but the professional sales that truly helps you feel comfortable with the car you find may end up saving you thousands. read more

Please check bluebook value before buying a car from CarMax. Many of their vehicles are overpriced, some by as much as a few thousand dollars. The car I was looking at was priced at $7,000. Based on mileage and condition the bluebook from a dealership was about $4,500. I checked three different blue book sites and comparable vehicles on auto trader and the highest price I could find was $5,200. The same vehicle that is 5 years newer is selling for around $7,000 on various sites. I thought this may be a one off, then I started looking at other vehicles they had, almost all were priced way too high. read more

Car Max emailed me a link to fill out this review, however the link was not valid, and I was unable to send return email to have them correct their error. Horrific experience so far. Car was supposed to be "certified", whatever that means. I found NUMEROUS problems that escaped their "certified mechanic", problems that anyone with a basic knowledge of cars could have easily found. Battery was corroded, (something ANY backyard mechanic could have spotted) fluid levels were low, some smelled burned, fuel was promised to be full, it was not. I drove the vehicle about 108 all highway miles, filled the car, and calculated mileage to be 17.7 mpg, this in a car that promised 38mpg hwy. Three subsequent tanks of gas have yet to exceed 25mpg, (28 mpg combined), of MOSTLY hwy mileage. Other minor and major problems have come to light since purchase, and I've been promised the problems would be resolved......that was about 3 weeks ago, and NOTHING to date has been done to fix things. Their 30 day "warrenty" is a complete JOKE and is pretty much meaningless and useless. Made even worse by the fact that they are clearly engaging in delaying tactics (by failing to respond to my concerns and issues with defects in their car, which they promised to take care of) in what can only be an intentional evasion of their written and stated responsibilities, and to have the 30 day warrenty clock expire so they don't have to honor their warrenty and fix the lemon they sold me. I am expected to travel between 1hr and 10 min to three hours away, (which I am unable to do because of medical restrictions on travel, I asked for reasonable accomodation for my disabilities and was refused.....three times, now I have file a claim with Washing State Disability Discrimination office) and spend an unknown number of hours or days doing THEIR JOB. Now I am expected to waste my time and resources and endanger my health to fix THEIR defective car. I have continuously, from the start, and in some cases daily, voiced my concerns in person, by telephone, and by email, yet they have done nothing. If you want an honest, reliable, fair, reasonable "dealer", I'd look elsewhere if I were you. read more
