I mean, how can you not love Carmine's? This place is just so NYC silly in every way possible. One of us came here a few years back with her father before Phantom shut down (RIP!!!!!) and wanted to recreate the experience before the whole family went to Operation Mincemeat (don't bother--the current casting is terrible). It was Saturday night, and the place was packed. Like, PACKED. They even had a bouncer at the door preventing people from coming in unless they had a reservation, which, luckily, we did. One of us started with their frozen cosmo, and...so fun! So silly! Why not? It was so good! Our daughter will forever remember this place because we let her have a coca-cola for the first time in her life because she needed the caffeine to be able to stay up for the show. For food, we got the caesar salad, the chicken marsala, and the penne a la vodka. Portions for the salad and the pasta were indeed HUGE, but we'd say that the chicken was not piled as high, and we pretty much finished it. The food is not bad! It's not world-shattering, but considering the sheer quantity that is coming out of the kitchen, we do have to say that the quality is better than expected. We ate a good amount. One fun thing to note: there is a birthday celebration literally every five minutes here, so when we told our waitress that it was our daughter's birthday at the end of the month, she encouraged us to go for the song, and we did, and it tickled our kiddo pink. The tiramisu and the spumoni were OK...the latter definitely felt like it was something they got from a production facility elsewhere. Our waitress was really sweet, and we had a fun time. The whole scene was pure chaos but the restaurant also felt like everything was under control. There were large parties and a party going on, a murder mystery dinner with people dressed in outfits from the 1920s. The ambiance is great, cool chandelier lighting and old photos and plenty of nostalgia and history. Family style Italian food, you get plenty to eat. The staff was nice, quick, attentive, happy to take a group photo, and sing happy birthday and bring out a treat. We tried some of their bread, caprese salad, and another salad, calamari, clams, pasta, meatballs, a chicken dish, and a few other items. It was fantastic. Although we attend many Broadway shows, this restaurant somehow had never been on our radar -- but we're glad we found it. We had a 7:00 PM curtain and chose this spot partly because of its reputation for getting theatergoers in and out efficiently. Our reservation was for 5:30 PM, though we were not seated until about 6:00 PM, so I would recommend allowing at least two hours before showtime just to be safe. Once seated, however, the evening flowed seamlessly. Service was prompt and professional, cocktails arrived quickly (and were excellent), and the food did not disappoint. We shared the Italian salad and a pasta entrée -- both were delicious, and the portions were enormous. We ended up leaving about half. Total bill for three, including tip, was around $180, which felt like a very good value given the quality, portions, and Midtown location.
