They do take reservations so if you have any idea of when you'll be arriving, I'd just put one in. They do, however, handle the line very well and get to you as quickly as possible. The service is also quite warm, quick, and friendly. Unfortunately, the food is just average. They give you a LOT of food for $25-30 depending on what plate you chose. I'd be surprised if you could eat more than half of it at most. The omelette is sooo much food - I can't believe they only used 3 eggs. And it's overflowing with cheese, maybe at least 40% cheese. They are not aiming for cute and frilly. Carnegie diner provides a solid diner experience with generous portions delivered with efficiency. You will be seated quickly (assuming you get there early enough to avoid inevitable lines), water and coffee are kept full, your meal will arrive promptly, and you will never feel rushed. On one of our visits here this trip I sat with a clear view of the pass. I always enjoy watching a well run organization; there was no wasted motion here. What I especially enjoyed about the breakfast is receiving both salad and potatoes, decent sized portions of both. Rather than trying to squeeze out a few extra fractions of a percent profit they provide a meal that keeps you coming back. Extremely rare today. On our 2 visits we had traditional eggs, a veggie omelette, and two orders of the eggs benedict (with a slice of tomato vs. ham). All were well prepared, tasty, and filling. As an added bonus the coffee was pretty good too. Based on our experiences you will not regret stopping here for a meal. We will definitely return. read more

Last night in NYC and wanted a stereotypical "diner" experience after attending a show on Broadway. (Colbert!) This fit all our parameters -- short jog from theater district; classic diner vibe; and a fairly classic diner menu. Place wasn't too busy around 8 pm on a weeknight; got a table w/o waiting, We each ordered variations of their pastrami sandwich. Mine was their "classic" -- a decent-sized pile of meat on rye. My wife's was an oversized version -- 1 lb of Wagu. (Goal was leftovers for a long train ride the next day.) This may sound weird, but my only gripe is that the sandwiches weren't greasy enough. Classic pastrami sandwiches feature thinly sliced meat with enough fat to moisten the bread -- and require a pile of napkins. Here, the meat was flavorful and tender -- but with literally NO grease. I added a lot of mustard, and enjoyed it -- but didn't need to wipe fatty drippings off my face once! The Wagu was great. Immense portion left enough for two sandwiches on our train ride. And the sides of cole slaw were TERRIFIC. Highly recommend. This isn't the old Carnegie Deli. You won't leave feeling too much nostalgia. (Or bloating from too much fat.) A friend of mine says this place is "mid" and a "tourist trap" when we tried to meet there for breakfast last month. We went to the place he suggested and it was lame. This time we went here and guess what...solid food. Is this place spectacular? No. But it is consistently good each time and each time I enjoy my breakfast before a fun day on vacation. My group was in a booth and the table was so narrow our legs were interlocked underneath, and the seats so close to it that it was squashing our chests. First, I'll start with the food. I ordered a side of bacon, side of hash browns, and a waffle since there was no waffle combo. The hash browns were actually pretty good. The coffee is not good, I literally put 7 sugars in the coffee and it still wouldn't get sweet when 3 should have been enough. I swapped it out for a latte. This place is busy, and although the food is decent, the service is lacking because of how busy it is. My waiter although polite seemed very irritated and rushed. Possibly too many tables but I didn't necessary feel welcomed there. Would I go again? More than likely because it was down the street from where I was staying but would probably try their other location and hope for better service overall. This location is small, they are making seats out of anywhere just to put guests and definitely felt squished against another party when I was dining alone.
