I'm always on the search for a good taco spot. It's amazing that with all the good food in NYC, finding good tacos is a rarity. That said, Carnitas Ramirez is pretty damn good. Located in the East Village, they serve primarily pork. There's some seating in the front on a nice day with additional seats in the back. They have an amazing toppings bar for you to customize the taco your way. We ordered the surtida, costilla, and chicharron tacos. We also got the guacamole and side of chicharrones. The surtida was the best. I also highly recommend the side of chicharrones with the guac. Overall the food is pretty legit. They happened to be filming something today and the camera folks were pretty annoying getting in the way and oblivious to it. Otherwise, I would really recommend coming. read more

Big fan of Taqueria Ramirez so was very excited to try out their Manhattan spot and it did not disappoint!! I was initially a little nervous to come since Taqueria Ramirez's lines are always insane, but showed up around 6pm on Saturday (in February though) and there was no line. Seating-wise, they have seating inside in the front (probably comfortably sit about 8 people), and then additional seats in the back (probably comfortably sit about 16-20 more folks). They also have some standing tables outside if the weather is nice. In my two visits, I've gotten: - Surtida (mixed special, all the pork bits) - Maciza (pork butt) - Barriga (pork belly) - Lengua (tongue) - Carnudo (fried pork belly) My personal favorites were surtida, carnudo, and lengua. The surtida offers a mix of everything. The carnudo had great crispy textures. And the lengua was a nice tender texture. Overall, this is a worthy follow-up to Taqueria Ramirez and definitely worth a visit if you're a fan of pork! They also have some very out there cuts of pork like ovaries or snout if you're feeling adventurous. Service is FAST and friendly which is also a huge plus and the topping/salsa bar is great. I still might say I prefer the variety of the Greenpoint location since they have different meats, but this will definitely hit the spot if you're bound to Manhattan. read more

Just like Taqueria Ramirez, this place does what's in its name to complete perfection. Every cut of pork you can imagine, melt in your mouth tender. I'll be honest, I got the safest cuts on my first visit, loin and butt (as opposed to more exotic cuts like uterus). I also got one of their special of the day: cochinita pibil, which I once fell in love with during a Merida visit. Funny enough, the cochinita ended up being my last favorite! The butt and loin were both just perfectly cooked, amazingly melt in your mouth tender, went perfectly with their salsa's and a squeeze of lime with pickled onions. I'd like to go back and try their torta's, given how perfectly cooked and tender the meat is I think it would be amazing on a sandwich. It's a small place without a lot of seating (the seating is actually on upside down buckets on a window ledge), but has a *really* nice touch that there's a sink on the condiment counter to pre-wash your hands and clean your hands after eating some wonderfully messy tacos. Pretty solid spot! There's a quick rotation of people here throughout the day, although I did see a line here at some point. Of course I waited for a moment when it's chill, walked up straight to the register and asked for a recommendation. Their menu is in Spanish but if you ask they'll tell you their top sellers. It's only pork here and they pretty much use all parts of the pig. I asked for the least fatty ones:) The tacos are served as plain meat on a tortilla then you head to the salsa bar to choose your toppings. I love that they have pickled carrots. Yum! Carnitas Ramirez is the sister store to Taqueria Ramirez, specializing in carnitas (a traditional weekend/celebratory meal in Mexico) rather than tacos al pastor. Needless to say, each visit of mine has felt like a little celebration in itself. The store is quite simple, and in the usual Manhattan fashion, quite small. There is a bench with stools along the display case, as well as seats facing the window (and on nice days, seats facing inwards from the street with the window open). In the back you can see the cauldron of carnitas frying, and right in the front there is a display case with each part of the pig separately labeled. Service is as you would expect as such a store, where you order at the counter and wait for your tacos to be prepared. Once prepared, there is a counter with pickled red onions, pickled jalapeños and carrots, and salsa (in particular I was a fan of the avocado salsa, very tasty and free!) As is tradition, they use the whole pig. The display case shows you what each part looks like, and they have something for the brave, as well as the less adventurous. My two favorite cuts are probably the costilla, or fried rib meat, as well as the carnudo, which is an extra crispy version of pork belly. On your first visit I'd recommend trying a few different cuts (be adventurous, it's all good!), and then on your next visit order what you liked best the first time (or whatever looks particularly good that day). I cannot stress enough how important the toppings are. Carnitas on its own is very rich and fatty, you could quickly find yourself having an unpleasant meal. The toppings solve that problem. The pickled onions, jalapeño and other vegetables add a lovely acidity, and the salsa a welcome spice. I would also certainly recommend the chicharron for crunch (basically Mexican for pork rinds). Overall, a welcome addition to the New York City Mexican food scene, and somewhere I see myself visiting many times this summer for some tacos and a beer on a sunny Sunday afternoon. read more

Cool taco spot in NYC's East Village. Heard some good things about it online so checked it out when I was in NYC this past weekend. Went on a Saturday a little before 2:30 pm. There was no line at the time so went right up to the counter to order. Ordered a costilla (rib) and barriga (pork belly) taco. Pricing for all tacos was simple, $5 each. Carnitas Ramirez is interesting because they offer taco meat from parts I didn't even know they made tacos from (butt, cheek, uterus, tail, ear, etc.). They have a separate station where you add your own sauces, pickled red onions, limes, etc. which was convenient. The costilla and pork belly tacos I tried were very good, in particular the pork belly taco, which I thought was excellent so got back in line and ordered another one. Also loved their spicy salsa, which was pretty damn spicy! I wasn't brave enough this time to try the taco meats from the more "exotic" portions of the pig but I'll try to check some of the other tacos out the next time I'm here. Carnitas Ramirez is a small restaurant. Maybe 8-10 seats on the inside and a small section where you can stand eating outside. But since they weren't busy at the time, I didn't have a problem finding a seat. Didn't notice any forks or knives readily available (personally didn't need them for my tacos) but they may have them upon request, not sure honestly. But dope spot overall! Super authentic Mexican restaurant that had the Mexican music blazing and a menu that was primarily in Spanish (though they can certainly explain the options to you in English if necessary). In terms of food quality, I might rate this spot even slightly above Los Tacos No. 1 - seems to be a relatively new spot that doesn't have the super long lines you often see at Los Tacos, which I appreciated. If a trip to Mexico City isn't in the cards for you soon, just come to this tiny no frills taqueria and be transported. Seriously the best carnitas tacos I've had in my life. Get the one with a combo of all the cuts and have your mind blown. Don't skimp on the green salsa with avocado! There are two steps to get inside and a button to press if you use a wheelchair. As I had an able bodied companion go in and order, I don't know what happens when you press it. There are a couple of counters indoors and one outdoors that are appropriately wheelchair height and an easy perch for consuming your tacos. read more

The real deal. I honestly think if you did a blind taste test of this versus some of the best street tacos in CDMX this would do pretty well. Interesting taco spot that serves only pork tacos. We ordered a few to try and I like the leaner ones or the half lean and half fat ones. The fat ones are just too oily especially since the tacos themselves don't come with anything besides the pork cut. It's nice that there are sides you can help yourself to at the front.
