We came back to The Carriage Inn recently because we were craving some hearty comfort food and a good cocktail, and it did not disappoint. I ordered the Ocean State of Mind which was delicious and definitely strong in the best way. I personally preferred it over ice rather than in the martini glass, but either way it's a great choice. My partner went with a Long Island Iced Tea which he also enjoyed. We both ended up ordering pasta dishes. I had the gluten free mac and cheese with grilled buffalo chicken and it was so good I had to dig in before even taking a photo. The flavors were spot on and the pasta was cooked perfectly. My partner ordered the chicken and broccoli Alfredo which looked just as good, especially with the side of toasty garlic bread. Portions were generous and we both left full with leftovers that were just as good the next day. Thank you for being such a consistently great place for us to come back to. Food was good but felt it could be a little better. Wife had shrimp and one was burnt and rubbery. Broccoli had no taste. Potato slightly undercooked. Turkey was good but tasted like it was not cooked in-house. It was extremely soft. Serving was large but could have had more mashed potatoes. Corn Biden under the turkey and it tasted like it was boiled to death. We did go in late 7:30 and online said the kitchen closes at 8. Maybe that had something to do with it. First off, the establishment is beautiful inside and out. All dining areas were well lit and very comfortable for a family or group of friends. Sound and ambiance were also very comfortable. Service was great. Our server did a great job of checking in on us in a timely manner and ensured we were happy with everything. Now the food. I gave a four star because the food was sooooo close to being really good! It wasn't bad but it missed some small things that are super easy to correct. My baked potato was just a hair undercooked. It was still decent and since it was so late at night we didn't want to make them make a new one. The shrimp were a bit overcooked and just needed a little more flavor in the stuffing. Unfortunately the broccoli was inedible. It was very bland with no seasoning and tasty mushy like it was frozen then microwaved. This was their biggest let down since I'm a big fan of veggies and for me it's pretty hard to miss the mark on something like that. So this was our second time here the first time we were here it was for a holiday event and the other room, so we were excited to try the actual food from the restaurant. We had amazing service from Marie (or Maria) as she was the one who recommended the Tower Hill tini and I'm glad she did because it was an amazing drink. I like the dark colors on the outside and I like how they have large windows at the restaurant so you can still see outside so if it's daytime, you get nice natural light. My husband's meal was the only one that was really hot. The rest of our food a little cold but it was still good, my pizza did get a little hard from it being cold so it was a little harder to chew but honestly, my kids and I all enjoyed the delicious food. We definitely plan on coming back and it was fun to see other people that I know who live in town as well so you know this is a delicious place to eat when you see your friends eating there as well. read more

A number of years ago, we dined there several times and liked it. We dined there a few weeks ago with friends and definitely enjoyed the dining experience. I loved the Yankee Pot Roast entree. It was so very tender and delicious. Hubby felt his entree was "heavenly!" It was a "carbonara dish" consisting of linguini in a creamy egg sauce tossed with peas, bacon & grilled chicken finished with black pepper & fried prosciutto. I ordered four trays from the Carriage Inn's "Prepared Foods to Go" menu for a Christmas Party that I was having in my home. I have eaten at the Carriage Inn before so I expected the food to be very good. However, I was blown away by just how incredible the service, quality and taste of the food was. First, let me say that I was able to have the trays delivered hot to my house prior to the party. I requested that the food arrive 15 minutes prior but the driver showed up 25 minutes prior. He had the trays in a hot box and brought it into my house. He told me that I could keep the trays in the hot box until I wanted to serve them. I could either drop them off during the week or he would come pick it up at the end of the week. When I put the trays out on my table, the food was steaming hot. Now, let me comment on the food. I ordered Chicken Fransciese, Roast Beef w/mushrooms, Gnocchi in Vodka sauce and Baked Stuffed Shrimp. The Chicken Fransciese was creamier than I am used to having and the chicken was sliced into large thin cutlets vs. thicker breasts. I could not believe the quantity of cutlets that were in the pan. They were absolutely delicious and so very tender. I requested that the mushrooms be served on the side rather than in the pan with the roast beef. They did not disappoint! I received a 1/2 pan filled with sautéed mushrooms in gravy, a half pan of aus jus, and a container of their homemade horseradish creme separate from the pan of roast beef. The roast beef was sliced on the thinner side and there was plenty of aus jus in the pan so the roast beef never dried out. Again, the quantity of roast beef completely surprised me. And, the first bite blew me away. The meat was incredibly tender and flavor full. This surprised me since it was delivered. I was expecting that it might be on the tougher side. The gnocchi was was delicious and had a lovely sauce. However, I made the mistake of putting all the trays on plugged in warming trays and turning up the heat. The gnocchi was in a single layer in the pan so it ended up getting dried out and slightly burned/hard by end of evening. My fault!! They were delicious when first served. Luckily, the three other entrees were fine. The baked stuffed shrimp surprised me as well. They were jumbo shrimp with a very generous mound of delicious stuffing on each of them. This was such a nice treat. My guests were expecting the same menu as years before: pizza, wings, lasagna and pot luck items. They were delighted that I chose to cater some of the dishes. Everyone raved about the quality of the food and went back for seconds. Even after everyone had their fill, there were still plenty of left overs. I have a stand alone freezer so we packed up the chicken and roast beef and froze them. Last night, we had some of the roast beef and it was still amazing and break apart tender. I just can't express how delighted I am that I decided to reach out to the Carriage Inn. I used other caterers in the past but one is no longer in business and some of the others were pick up and reheat only. So, I broadened my search to the Carriage Inn and will be using them over and over again in the future. The quality and quantity and service for the price is just absolutely unbelievable! read more

I hadn't been here in years (literally decades!) and though it's changed hands a few times since and undergone some facelifts, I'm happy to state that the food is much improved and better than my past visits. I had their jambalaya which was flavorful and carried a real spicy kick (which was even better the next day as the portion was generous); this dish paired perfectly with a cold IPA draft (Whalers East Coast). My daughters had a pulled pork sandwich and a patty melt, respectively; and my wife had their veggie burger. All were deemed well cooked and tasty, and with nice crispy fries. We felt this was an average, at best, dining experience. The food was old fashioned pub food. We weren't dissapointed with our order but weren't wowed either. This place has been around for a long time and has a fairly consistent local following, so it must hit some folks' wheelhouse. The worst part about this place was that it was freezing cold inside. We wore jackets and were still uncomfortably cold ... most of the other diners were wearing their jackets as well. Though the restaurant boasts '2 fireplaces' on their website, we were told they aren't in use because 'they smoke the place up.' The stone walls made it feel like a cold basement and we couldn't wait to get back to the warmth of our car. Beyond that, everything seemed dusty ... from the hanging light with cobwebs to the wall decor. The light above our table flickered, which got incredibly annoying so I touched the bulb to see if it was loose and a cascade of dust fell onto the table. The bathroom was also filthy. We had a burger and fries. The burger was okay ... kind of bland. The fries were the best part, likely homemade. Though ordered medium well, the burger was bright pinkish-red. Pizza was average bar pizza. The cheese and sauce lacked any taste, other than sweetness. The crust was cracker-style, typical to bar pizza and did not look like the picture on the menu. The best part of the meal was a well curated draft beer list. They have 12 rotating special draft beers ... something for everyone ... and some hard to find ones. The restaurant is laid out kind of oddly and the dark wood and stone pub seems a bit old and grimy ... although with a fire it might have been cozy. The main dining room is cavernous and a bit stark with white walls and booths. We probably won't return but if you like classic old-fashioned pub food and aren't too picky, you probably could do worse than this place. Plenty of parking and the menu hits all the bases for classic American fare. Just don't expect a meal to write home about. It's very similar to The Gristmill Restaurant in Seekonk but I'd give The Gristmill an edge. read more

Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and we certainly didn't leave room for dessert, which I regretted based on their dessert menu options. We had the mozzarella sticks, wings and French onion soup as our appetizers. For our meals, we had Mac n cheese, the sirloin tips, kids chicken fingers, and a burger. If you get the sirloin tips, get it without the whiskey sauce because the sauce doesn't go with the peppers and onions on it. The kids Mac n cheese is real Mac n cheese (PTL!) and all of our appetizers were great! Our waitress was great! She had great recommendations and was on top of things! Got into the area for 4th of July weekend and was looking for a place nearby that would be exciting. We found this place on Yelp and it fit the bill perfectly. We started with the Prime Rib Poutine. The fries, cheese curds, and gravy were great, but thought the meat was a little bland. For dinner I got the Veal Sorrento which was massive and delicious. I took half of it home and was able to pick at it all weekend. Pasta was pretty basic, but the garlic bread was on point. My wife got the Chicken Saltimbocca, chicken and sauce were very flavorful and she loved it. Mashed potatoes were a bit bland, and the pieces of broccoli were a little large for her (she likes the heads not the stalks). Visited Wicked Tulip Farm in nearby Exeter, RI today to pick their beautiful flowers and searched for a restaurant in the vicinity via YELP and discovered the Carriage Inn! We've lived in Rhode Island for nearly 15 years, so how could it be we never heard of this gem before today? The beautiful website and many positive reviews convinced us it was well worth driving a little out of our way to try it out. What a grand historic building it is, beautifully restored and updated a decade ago. We were greeted immediately and allowed to choose where we wanted to sit as it was early, shortly after opening on a Monday. The main dining room is bright with lots of comfortable booth seating by big windows looking out onto the front patio. The large menu is reasonably priced and full of great options. Kristen, our server was fun, personable and seemed to really appreciate the food served here, the atmosphere, management, co-workers and customers of The Carriage Inn. Lunch was fantastic! Pulled Pork Sandwich with sweet potato fries for my husband and an outstanding Nashville Fried Chicken with fries and slaw for me. Half sour pickles served with both sandwiches are awesome! Seasoned house french fries and sweet potato fries are crispy outside and puffy inside. Pulled pork was tender sweet and savory, and the seemingly modest amount of spicy sauce on the Nashville built, and built... but not over the top. Condiments on every table, including K, M, malt vinegar and hot sauce.We took a little tour of the place as we were leaving and I had the good fortune to run into Carissa, the events and banquet manager as she was working in the stable party dining area of the restaurant. She gave us a little haunted history, special events coming up in the restaurant. Once again I got the feeling that the people working here really care about their business and their customers.
