I had the smoked Salmon avocado Benedict and my spouse had the chicken fried tenderloin with chorizo gravy, gravy and eggs. We both loved our meals. Large portions and sooo flavorful! I really really really wanted to love my experience here. I had been wanting to come in for dinner for months and finally got a babysitter for our anniversary so my husband and I could enjoy a nice dinner together. Unfortunately, we were super disappointed by the service. We had reservations for 7pm on a weeknight. When we arrived there were several open tables, but it did look like there was only 1 server and 1 bartender, both of which were busy. We checked in at the front and were told they were going to get our table ready. We waited 30 minutes to sit down! And there were tons of open, clean tables! We weren't offered a drink, to sit at the bar, or even an explanation (an "I'm so sorry, we're understaffed tonight" would have made a huge impact). Instead, the server avoided eye contact with us and ignored us for a half an hour, before the bartender sat us, again without any apology or acknowledgment to the fact that we'd been waiting for so long. We finally sat and ordered our dinners - 2 steaks cooked medium. I am quite pregnant and asked for my steak to be cooked medium ( noting medium + would be ok since I'm pregnant) and my steak came out rare to medium rare. So I sent it back and watched my husband eat his dinner, almost finishing it before my plate came back. Overall I imagine if the service would have been more attentive and we would have had a much better experience. I'd like to say I'd try it again, but for the price and with the complete lack of acknowledgment of how poor the service was, I doubt we will be. read more

I had dinner with them. I got the crab and artichoke dip as an appetizer and found it to be tasty however some of the dip was cold at the center. I would have preferred if the entire dip was warm but I really like that they served it on a half artichoke so if you didn't want to use the bread you could use the artichoke leaves. I got their beat gnocci and while the sauce was very delicious there are few things I would have changed. The gnocci was almost too big and they didn't quite fry it or crisp it slightly the way I've had in the past. All in all a fairly good experience. read more

The food, the drinks, the service...all phenomenal! It was so good we went two nights in a row so we could try new things. Don't get scared by the $$$, it's totally worth it and the Bar Menu All Day Happy Hour menu is actually less expensive than any food at any of the breweries. In the two visits, we tried 5 dishes and two desserts, spectacular. The chef definitely knows how to use salt, acid and heat to create bold, scrumptious dishes that you won't find anywhere between here and PDX. And FYI, the $5 House red is just perfect and generous on the pour, but the cocktails were on point too. Seriously, try this place and you won't be disappointed! read more

Been a while since I was in here, but never got around to giving them a shout out. Nice bar menu, and food was good, but the Manhattans were even better!! I'm picky about my Manhattans and Steve/Dave? nailed it. Carruthers is nothing short of a great experience! We were promptly greeted and brought to a table by friendly staff. I got an Old Fashioned and my boyfriend got the Colombian Breeze - which were both lovely. We decided to both get the "little Italy night" meal. Both of the appetizers were absolutely phenomenal as well as the dessert. My boyfriend loved his entree, I just felt like my pasta didn't have enough Alfredo (but that's just a personal opinion as I enjoy heavy Alfredo sauce.) I wish I would have caught our servers name tonight because she was absolutely lovely. She was prompt and very kind. Christmas dinner was horrible. We made reservations. $35 a plate. 15 minutes to get a cocktail to then never have plates cleared or checked on. When I went to the manager to express my concern for zero service I was told I was wrong and that I had not been waiting 15 minutes. Later she came up and apologized explaining she thought I was sat at a different table but then not compensating. Never again will I visit this establishment. We dropped in without a reservation on a Saturday night and they stretched but accommodated us. The service was stellar, the food was fantastic. We ordered the Brussel sprouts and I have to say they are nothing short of culinary magic. Our entrees were great as well. If your in Astoria I would highly recommend this place. Absolutely loved everything about this place! Food, ambience, service.. everything was amazing! We started with Thai Brussels Sprouts for the table and it set the mood right. We then ordered Beet Cashew Gnocchi, Chicken Risotto, Avocado Noodles and Seafood Manicotti for the main course and everything was at par! We were so full that we couldn't order any desserts (though I was tempted to order Torta de Santiago and Creme Fraiche Panna Cotta. The chili cauliflower wings were a shock - yummy flavor, great texture, perfect portion size. Husband loved the cioppini - so much savory flavor. My mushroom and cavatappi was enormous (should have eaten half of it so I had room for dessert) and rich in flavors. Stopped in for Thursday lunch, while driving thru on vacation. Ok...4.75. Firstly, the good news: the service (bartender) was amazingly friendly. And second- the food really was phenomenal. PHE-NOM-ENAL. We had the posole (how did they get this right in Oregon?!?) "Amish" egg salad sandwich, and Thai Brussels sprouts. All were very, very good. I do not understand why the place was so slow (maybe too early in the summer for tourism?)- but everyone should be eating lunch here. EVERYbody. It's a mixed bag. Ambience was great and service was fine. From dish to dish, the quality varied greatly. I ordered the beet and blueberry bruschetta as a starter and it was fantastic. Interesting blend of tastes and each component was on point. My husband ordered the veggie lentil soup and enjoyed it. Things were off to a great start, but definitely hit an uneven foot when the entrees arrived. Both my husband's Cod and my Pad Thai came with an abundance of undercooked Brussels sprouts. Large halves of undercooked Brussels sprouts !! And there was soooo much cauliflower in my Pad Thai. Seems like someone went to the Farmers market and decided to use what they found in every dish. In abundance!!! Setting aside the experimental veggies in the Pad Thai, the real issue was lack of attention to prep of some key items . The noodles in my Pad Thai were so overcooked as to have turned into a glumpy mess. The flavor was fine, but a mass of gluey noodles hiding tons of cruciferous veggies was just not appetizing. The same was true for the risotto accompanying the cod. It was mushy. I understand that it's hard to prepare risotto to order, but the obvious solution Is to offer a different accompaniment to the fish. All in all, we applaud the concept of the cuisine at Carruthers, but found the execution uneven. If we are in town again we'd might give it another try. read more

Blown away by our meal! Definitely going back when we visit again, good service (our waitress was personable & knew how to do the job), price wasn't too bad either, but who cares when the food is delicious we had Purple Potato Gnocchi with the addition of scallops & Fideos with add. scallops.....Amazing! Scallops were cooked perfectly, all seafood and the gnocchi was very, very tasty and meals were seasoned correctly. Portions were good size too! Drew in by the striking elegant salty ocean blue interior with huge gilt mirrors and marble tables, we stopped for lunch. It was our dream come true! We'd been searching for innovative fresh food in Astoria and here we found it. My husband's Cubana sandwich elicited his numerous exclamations as well as the accompanying prawn andouille sausage soup. Accompanied by a fresh IPA, he raves about his meal. My arugula beet feta and chicken salad was delicious, beautiful, and right on program!!! We love this place and will return soon. What a wonderful addition here. read more

We were nearly the only people in there at 11:45 on Tuesday morning which made me nervous but the food we got was delicious! We had the shrimp and grits which was NOT overly greasy or spiced even with chorizo and the grits being FRIED ( which was sooo good), and a cute salad with strips of some kind of radish things with green polka dots. Great service. Fun "Carruther's Mimosa" with rosé bubbles and grapefruit juice. Note: the sign outside said "happy hour all day" but it didn't say you have to sit at the bar or the bar tables in back for that deal. The bar food menu looked good too at a glance. We ordered the Filet. It was tough. The sauce was a chimichurri but it had so much garlic the only part of the steak you could taste was how tough it was. We ordered it medium rare. The vegetables were cold and flavorless. The potatoes were rubbery like they were cooked the day before and warmed up in a microwave. Immensely impressed! The atmosphere is unbelievably classy & cozy. I couldn't get enough of it. We were promptly greeted and sat at the awesome bar top. I believe we were taken care of by a woman I thought was the bar manager. She was so nice & attentive. We came in before dinner so we were able to have her attention for a bit while she made our amazing first round of cocktails. She answered all of our questions about the awesome city of Astoria, as we are visiting from Camas, WA. I'm a bartender myself, and the quality of craft cocktails this place provides is great! I ordered the pork chop, possibly one of the best I've ever had. Everything from flavor to presentation was a ten. Kudos Carruther's for providing a phenomenal dining experience!
