If you're visiting Carruthers and you see it's busy, I suggest you keep looking. While the ambiance and menu are both appealing, it seems the aim is greater than the execution. Our roasted Brussels sprouts dish was an intriguing blend of sweet and savory but was so disappointingly overcooked it could have been spread on toast. Similarly the beautiful cod filet was so heavily browned it was crunchy! Where crunch was desired and advertised, the "crispy skin" duck breast was instead gelatinous. All the flavors were nice but in every case the kitchen wasn't quite up to the task. Perhaps on a less busy night the quality control will be better. The wait staff were all pleasant but almost comically inefficient. Our mains were brought to the table while our empty appetizer dishes were still there waiting to be cleared. There were just too many times when a visit for clearing the table or refreshing drinks would have been welcomed. All in all it was a case of "close but no cigar". TOTALLY NEW FOLKS!!! After closing this summer I was so pleased to see it re-open...and can I just say...WOW WOW WOW! The food is exceptionally good! We ordered appetizers and I tried the mussels and what a wonderful surprise! EXCELLENT. Then we ordered the Shrimp Pasta...again a HUGE winner. It was smooth as silk, shrimp was cooked perfectly. I couldn't finish it and reheated it the next day (basically bc I couldn't wait to eat it again). We ordered the chocolate cake for dessert..again absolutely amazing. Hubby ordered the cheesecake which was just soo good! The restaurant appearance is changing as well. A throwback to the history of the building built back in 1923...just great fun, great service and great food!! Headed back this next weekend for more! read more

Carruthers Restaurant was selected by my friend for us to try for dinner. We're all from out of town but my friend is very familiar with Astoria. I see other Yelp reviews that this restaurant comes highly recommended. This is a very popular restaurant so definitely call ahead for reservations any time of the week as we were there on a Thursday night. The restaurant has a good atmosphere, is clean and we were greeted by a friendly hostess. We started with the Carruthers salad and then had the Filet Mignon, Devil's Fried Rice, Confit de Canard and for dessert we had a double layer vanilla cake and strawberry mousse. It was all perfectly prepared and delicious. The presentation was creatively lovely and appetizing. The service was a bit lacking but it happens when one is very busy with numerous tables. read more

Waiter was nice. Soup was cold, fries burnt, chicken skin on the special was so tough, the knife provided COULD NOT cut it. The desert Creme Brûlée was expensive and I don't believe it was 1/4 inch thick. Tips should be based on quality of service. Instead, a mandatory 20%, plus a card fee so we chose to pay cash ( 3 couples). Remember when waiters could write one order, flip page, write the next. All was on 1 bill ($200.00 plus) & we had to figure it out ourselves. Nothing about this dining experience was good except the waiter who took our orders was nice. Five stars all day long! Everything we ordered was great. There were so many gluten free options! We had the best gluten free calamari dredged in rice flour and it was so light and crispy. We also shared cauliflower wings! So good! I ordered smoky drink with Mezcal. It was very good. Only issue was they didn't put the black rock salt on the rim and waitress didn't even say anything until I mentioned it and she said oh we ran out of salt. I came from out of state and this place definitely stood out to me during my vacation. Beautifully decorated with low lighting to create a calming and luxurious dining experience. The host and our server were incredibly attentive and kind. Every dish and drink was delicious. The plate that stood out the most was the Bourbon Pecan Salmon that comes with butternut squash purée, absolutely fantastic and well paired. We also got the Ribeye, Cioppino, and Seared Scallops (came with 6 large scallops) which were all enjoyable and good sized portions. I believe they update their drink menu often but we got: 1. Incredible Pulp Ale, Boneyard Beer - had a sweet and lychee aftertaste which was light and refreshing 2. Prickly Pear (small pink drink) - strong, smokey and fruity tequila cocktail 3. Liquid Gold (tall yellow drink) - bourbon cocktail, very well mixed, no strong alcohol scent/taste For dessert, we got a chocolate cake (extras from New Years, usually not on menu) and their creme brulee which was really good that I forgot to take a picture before finishing. read more

Full disclosure, we loved Carruthers before the pandemic, and despaired at the length of time they were closed. As luck would have it, they were remodeling to make the dining area more COVID friendly. The dining room has lots of space & beautiful dividers between the tables. They were the first place we've been to eat since last year that wanted proof of vaccination. Our meal here yesterday was more of an "experience," and a perfect experience it was! We sat at the bar and enjoyed champagne and a few of their small plates (which really aren't that small). We had the blackened fish tacos, chicken satay, Spanish shrimp and the date poppers. My personal favorites were the tacos and the shrimp. Just awesome. My wife's fave was the satay, saying it was the best peanut sauce she has ever had. While the food was really fantastic, the real stars of our "experience" were the bartender/servers. We were in for dinner for the first time since they reopened and it was terrific. The burger was delicious and it came with the best fries we've had in ages. First time trying this place with reservations. Went on Friday evening and I was very disappointed in the food and service. I ordered the pork chop dinner. After an hour of waiting, the waitress comes over to tell me that the pork chop was still in the freezer; therefore, I was not getting my food. Waitress only came by to check on our table once after we ordered. All our drinks were empty for an hour. The other dishes we ordered was the burger, ribeye, and cous cous which was extremely bland. The unseasoned shrimp on the cous cous tasted like they just blanched it and put it on top of the cous cous. The ribeye and burger was ordered medium and they were over cooked. Very high prices for poor service and unseasoned food. I will not be going back. read more

Carruthers is a higher end restaurant in Astoria, Oregon. Cloth napkins, linen tablecloths and mood lighting made for a romantic setting at our table for two. Great for celebrating an anniversary or other special occasion. I enjoyed my braised sparerib on a bed of polenta. Delicious and filling. My wife had grilled salmon and really enjoyed the side vegetables. Nice presentation on a slate. Not a huge portion but she was happy with it. All the wait staff were friendly and professional. Had a reservation for 3 at 6:30pm, but when we arrived, the host said "You'll be sitting at the bar," to which two of the three of us said we were sorry, but we are mobility impaired, we could not climb up on or down from the barstools and asked if we could please wait for a table. No, the host said, they were full. All night. No apology. No kindness. No effort whatsoever to make it right, or to be ADA friendly. Need anything special? Another great visit to Carruthers! We stopped in during HH and enjoyed some shareable bar bites and two FULL pours of Pinot Gris. The mussels, loaded fries, and halibut cheeks were super fresh and piping hot. We couldn't leave without taking a look at the dessert menu; but of course two sweet treats were ordered... The peanut butter cheesecake was rich and decadent; the fruity crumble was sweet and tangy with some ice cream to smooth it all out. Excellent service and great atmosphere! read more

Ok the building is beautiful. Menu looks delicious. I sat at bar. Will, the bartender made it very clear who his favorites were, as he joked and spent time with them the whole time I was there. He was very rude to everyone else. Very off putting. Owner of carruthers, are you listening? Your staff is pompous and mediocre. He talked down to a little nice older lady who asked him what he was making. Bartenders make money off of being kind and personable, he was rude and only talked to people that were clearly his regulars. Everyone else just annoyed him. Also overheard him making fun about customers back in the kitchen. Its really ridiculous being so cocky when your drinks are mediocre at best. I can make a better mule at home. Hopefully the owner or manager puts some real thought into all your 1 and 2 star reviews. read more

You definitely don't want to miss the peanut butter chocolate cheesecake. It's one of those desserts you have to close your eyes and just enjoy!!! The flavor and texture are so sensual. A lot of things done well and some things that detracted from the whole experience. I don't care if there's a window pane between me and the next table over. It's too close. If you're going to insist on this kind of awkward proximity, at least use smoked glass ... Ribeye had a chewy texture. And the gravy was salty. A grassfed ribeye should cut and chew without a problem. Not sure where the beef came from, but I cook better steaks at home. The crabcakes and duck confit were spectacular. The duck, however, is seriously just a little drumstick. That's about all of the meat you get. The mashed potatoes that accompany it are delicious, but it doesn't make up for the fact they seriously scrimp on the main. Veggies were ruffage, super fibrous, hard to cut with a serrated knife. It was almost insult to injury. Chocolate cake with bourbon made it sound like it was akin to a tiramisu. Nope, you can get better results out of a betty crocker recipe, it was super dry. No drizzle, no raspberries adorning the plate. It was big, but it was a big pile of mediocrity -- Kind of like our server who forgot my tea and came up with some lame excuse. Or sat there and made us pay as soon as she brought her tablet over. They couldn't be bothered to drop off a paper check and let us take our last few moments unwinding? I get they are upscale and modern, but I don't care how ahead of the times you are, you don't rush customers in a fine dining establishment. read more

Carrithers was once our go to restaurant but with the change in ownership i believe we are done We were excited to go back with the new opening, so we took some friends from out of town and wow were we disappointed, 1st off service is slow, it took over 35 minutes to get our food (the restaurant wasnt full), when it came most of the food was so-so, the osabuco was delicious but my steak was overcooked and covered in a foul sauce, so i sent it back,well 30 minutes later everyone else is done eating and their plates are cleared and still no steak? Finally found a waitress and asked about it and 5 minutes later it Finally comes out, when asked what took so long i was informed that there were 8 steaks in front of me?? What? The steak i got was flavorless, and about 75% unedible grissle, the "loaded baked potato " had about a teaspoon of sour cream and 4 or 5 bacon bits, but what was worse is the potato was so old you couldn't really get the potato out without a knife and fork Horrible They did comp my steak but that just doesn't make up for a poorly run restaurant with sub par food read more

Wow I have to say I was throughly impressed with Carruthers. I had a dirty martini and the cioppino and was entirely satisfied. The shrimp in the cioppino was beautifully cooked, and the mussels and steamed clams were perfect. The tomato broth had a creaminess to it that was a great addition, and when dunking with the buttered crostini, it was truly a wonderful bite. Moreover, unlike some seafood places that skimp on how much you get, this was a large bowl of cioppino. All in all, loved it! read more

Came here last night on a Saturday for a reservation at 8. We added two more people to make the group a 6 too and unfortunately they could only accommodate us on the couches up front with a small table for drinks, not really set up for dinner. We made the eBay of it and got a few bottles of wine and a smorgasbord of appetizers so we could all snack! The service was great and friendly. They close up shop early which was a bummer because we wanted another bottle of wine with our desserts and we missed last call. We visited Carruthers on a Sunday afternoon. I'm not sure if they recently started to open on Sundays or if it was only during the peak months but on Sundays at Carruthers, the only area you can drink and eat is in their bar area. The rest of the dining room was closed off, so no minors are allowed in on Sundays. Located on the corner of Commercial and 12th Street, this restaurant was built in the 1920s era but the interior has since been updated but yet they kept some of the originality, very Art Deco and chic. Hubby and I are big on sharing so we ordered: - Halibut Cheeks: with beet pesto fried rice - Sloppy Fries: pork, smoked bleu cheese, bbq demi glaze, herbed shiitakes - Soup of the Day: Hearty Shredded Pork Soup The dishes we ordered had a lot of Asian influences but I would not call this place Asian Fusion. The halibut was amazing, tender and juicy and the beet pesto fried rice paired so nicely with it. The soup was awesome, almost like a chili but with broth in it. Delicious and comforting. I can probably forego the sloppy fries, but hubby wanted something to munch on with his beer.
