If you can get a table here, you'll really enjoy your breakfast. Carver's has remarkably good toast - random, but a nice surprise, good eggs and pancakes. I also think the staff is very warm and friendly. I wish i could give it 4.5 stars - the two areas it falls a little short in is portion size and venue size. What the?! Minding the sign to wait to be seated, we stood in the doorway to be greeted by the host (or basically anyone who worked there). Having made eye contact w/ about 7 different employees (behind the counter and not), we were visibly ignored and passively looked over. It was clear that we were waiting to be seated, and it was also obvious that our names weren't taken down as the people who were given a wait time would go outside the restaurant as space inside is limited. After about 15 mins of being neglected, we decided that we had waited long enough and decided to leave for another restaurant. No matter how busy your restaurant is, you should show enough respect to the customers to at least acknowledge them...... :( read more

Food was nothing special. Owner & servers seemed more concerned with regulars than first time customers. It was a weekday so they weren't crazy busy. We waited a bit for someone to come and even get our drink order, never offered refills even though glasses were empty when our food finally arrived. Stopped in about 2 hours before closing time, ordered a breakfast special, a cup of soup, and an egg white omelet. I've had decent food from this place in the past, but today the egg white omelet came over done, the toast came barely toasted for both orders, and the soup never arrived at all (which would have remained on the bill had we not pointed it out). To top it all off, our waitress seemed to be in a bad mood and was entirely inattentive, barely checking on how the food arrived and never offering any refills. I've been working right next to Carver's for about 3 months now but have only had the chance to actually eat there on the weekends and my schedule just hasn't allowed me to venture into this little gem. So they're open from 6-3 (I think) which are some pretty sweet hours in general, on the weekends there is most certainly a wait, the place only seats about 15-20 people and everything is homemade. The staff are all super pleasant and friendly. I came in around 1 after finishing up with my clients and my own workout and I needed some grub. I took a look at the menu, it's very breakfast heavy which is fine because that's the majority of what they do--but I wanted lunch. They had 2 special boards up, the breakfast one included pumpkin stuffed french toast and a prosciutto omelette, the lunch board offered their soups, cream of cauliflower (interesting), escarole and beans, and something else I can't recall---also listed were their lunch sandwich specials. A pecan cranberry chicken salad and the cuban caught my eye--chicken salad for gramma, cuban for me. I placed my order and sat down while they go it ready. It really is a cute little joint that's very comfortable and very friendly. My food was ready in about 10 minutes and I was on my way. The sandwiches are quite large and very tasty. My cuban def had homemade roasted pork, ham and swiss obv--and pickles. It wasn't pressed like I'm used to with a cuban but it was still super awesome. The chicken salad was overflowing out the sandwich--and let me tell you I am not a fan of chicken salad in general but this was very good. The balance of the cranberries with the pecans was just awesome. They include some potato chips and coleslaw in your box as well. The chips got soggy and the coleslaw soaked the bottom of my sandwich--the only downside. I am not a fan of coleslaw by any means but I did try a bite and this wasn't bad. I will definitely be back to Carver's---gotta get the hubs up early enough on a weekend to indulge in their breakfasts. My husband and I just visited for the first time this morning. Ambiance: small restaurant with a homey feel, there are booths on the walls but we ended up sitting in the middle where you share a table with someone else, it was rather cramped. The table behind us was so close that maneuvering to get out was a chore. Food: we ordered the corned beef hash, a chocolate chip banana pancake, and a French toast breakfast special. The food was all very good, the bread for the French toast is homemade and added a nice touch. Most places include drinks in the breakfast specials but drinks are separate here. Service: The service is the reason for the three star review. The staff all seemed frustrated and rushed. It felt like we were a burden even asking for basic items. One of the creamers was rotten, and upon telling the staff and showing them the blue/white blob from the coffee they replied that that does happen sometimes. When we asked for a refill of water, the cup left and never came back. Our food was delivered long after the couple sharing our table, who arrived after we did. The only pleasant and efficient part of the service occurred when we were given the bill and paid. I was very much looking forward to coming to Carvers based on the reviews, but left saying that I wouldn't visit again. Perhaps I would give it another try, but only for takeout. read more

I've been here many times and the food always ranges between decent and very good. Servers are always polite and know what they're doing. If you stop in for breakfast, I recommend trying one of the specials on the board, which change weekly and are always something interesting. read more

There is no better breakfast or brunch spot in North Jersey! The food is fantastic, the staff is friendly and attentive, it has the perfect atmosphere for a morning bite - I love it. Omelets, french toast, pancakes, eggs - Doesn't matter what you order because everything will be delicious. Huge portions so be prepared to eat. Carver's is reliably fantastic - so much so that we've gone almost every single Sunday for the past 4 months. It's somewhat of an open secret that this is the best breakfast spot in the area, so wait times can get long after about 8:30 - 9am. The ambiance is somewhat unassuming, but certainly unpretentious, and - let's face it - we're here for the menu, and the nearly flawless service, not for the décor. All the breads are homemade, and the multi-grain raisin is a must-try. The specials are eclectic, change every week, and truly are unique as opposed to recycled menu items. My husband and I decided to give the place a shot for Sunday brunch as we had never been there before. We saw reviews stating the food was good, but the service was terrible and decided to wait it out anyways. When we walked in, no one greeted us to take our name and we waited inside til we finally had to pull someone aside and ask about a wait list and how to leave our name. We asked the waiter how long and if we were supposed to do something else and he said" we have a lot going on today, you can come to the counter or we come to the door, doesn't matter." There was a sign posted that said "please wait to be seated" so we were following that. We added our name to this long scribbled pad he had, and went outside. After waiting 45 minutes outside and watching people go in, we asked where we were on the list and the waiter said were not on the list. We were furious and decided to leave and told them that's terrible service. They didn't seem to care about our business at all. If that's the case then we won't ever go there again. read more

A lot of regulars which says a lot about how they run the restaurant. This place is almost always packed, sometimes you will get seated with other people, which I guess some people could not like. Couldn't agree more with the other reviewers. The food, service and staff are the best. My family and I look forward to going to Carver's (formally Doc's ) at least once a month. Chrissy and the staff are like family and we feel like we need to see them as well as enjoy the delicious homemade everything! Their pies are to die for, we always order two for the Holidays! Another highlight is that they are toddler friendly and are always so helpful and friendly with family with little ones. My kid eats everything, but it gives me a peace of mind that when she goes to Carver's she is getting homemade cooking with lots of TLC! This is exactly the kind of place I would have frequented with my parents after church when I lived with them. My pancake was unbelievable (I had it with banana, coconut and almond), my home fries were good, but pretty typical. I can eat a LOT and I was full after one pancake and half my home fries. I ordered eggs scrambled, home fries, and a piece of French toast. My food was mediocre. Egg over cooked, home fries were dry and French toast was dry as well. The bread for the toast was hearty and thick which was nice, hubbies blueberry pancakes had a nice batter taste and sausage links were decent. Decided to try Carver's for breakfast today after reading the Yelp reviews. Showed up around 9am and the wait was only 15 minutes. Not too bad considering what we were expecting. The servers were friendly and fast, and the food was very good. We especially liked the corned beef hash and the multigrain raisin bread toast. Only drawback is that there was no kids menu. For starters, it is real corned beef, the over easy eggs were done exactly right without extra grease and to top it off, 3 slices of homemade Rye toast.
