The breakfast menu is very large, and hubby chose a Taylor Ham, egg and cheese on a Kaiser roll, and I ordered a cheese omelette with toast. Paul's Family Diner has been around since 1947, but has been family owned and operated since 1997. It is open 7 days a week and was open on New Years day when my ski buddy and I ate breakfast before heading to the slopes in Pennsylvania. The hostess directed us to a booth moments after we entered. They offer table and counter seating, as well. The waitress was an older woman. She was friendly, professional and checked up on us frequently. The menu is LARGE. My buddy ordered the Taylor Ham sandwich with egg and cheese ($7.95). There was a good ratio of layers and he enjoyed his breakfast. I hate it when only one slice of Taylor ham is on the sandwich. I ordered the 3 egg mushroom omelet which came with hash browns ($8.95). The quality of the food and prices make Paul's Family Diner the best diner in the area. Paul did not jack up his prices nearly as much as other diners have in the area. The diner has undergone a number of renovations and today is a cozy place to eat, clean with a traditional Jersey diner look. They offer local delivery, sit-in or take-out. I have dined at Paul's many times over the years. It checks all the boxes and is a better than average diner. Without going into specifics all the breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches and wraps that we have ordered have generally been very good. For dinner I typically go for the Greek Combo which is a fave. Generous portion of Gyro meat, Chicken souvlaki over a Greek salad with French fries and pita wedges. Over time, we have ordered a few sea food dishes which have been hit or miss. But to be fair that is usually the case at most diners. The service is always fast and friendly and the aesthetics of the diner are very pleasant. I really want to like this place, it's been good in years past and is a mainstay. But today six of us had a terrible experience. We were seated quickly. The waiter did not write anything down. We all ordered different breakfast dishes. Even while we were ordering we knew he wasn't getting it. He came back at least three times to ask one of us what we ordered. One of the meals did not come out until we were almost done. They didn't have banana for the Nutella pancakes. Then after suggesting strawberries he told us they were out of that too. Not what I would call "Classic Diner cuisine". Today the lone waitress was busy cleaning tables and ignoring my friend and I. We sat for several minutes watching her clean tables and she knew we were there. I ordered the eggs with corned beef hash and hash browns. 4 bites later I was sick and done. The waitress took away the full plate and never asked why I did not eat my food because she really didn't care. My friend got a mushroom omelette and noticed the same funky vinegar taste in the hash browns. Neither one of us ate even half of our meal and we both got sick. Vinegar taste and smell on everything. Nasty. 34 plus dollars. Never again. We were there at 10:35 on Thursday morning. Paul's diner is done in my book. Double the price and buy the cheapest stuff the supplier has. Brought my father here for breakfast. We both ordered omelettes with toast and hash browns. My omelette had chorizo, tomatoes and avocado in it. The chorizo wasn't that spicy, the avocado and tomatoes were nicely mixed in but the omelette was way over cooked. The hash browns were nicely well done, which I like. The toast and coffee was very good. The service was good. The only downside was the over cooked omelette. My father's was also overcooked. The ambiance was that of a diner. Also, it had snowed that morning and even though it was a dusting, the sidewalks leading to the entrance weren't shoveled or salted. I probably won't be back. What happened to this diner? We used to come here fairly often. Met a friend fir breakfast today, along with my daughter. I ordered the challah french toast and 2 scrambled eggs. What I expected was a couple of nice ,thick, challah shaped pieces of french toast. What I received was two slices of square white bread french toast. When I asked the waitress about it she got us the manager. At first he said it was challah just thin slices. He offered to het me something else so I opted for pancakes. They were good, and about twice as thick as the french toast. Meanwhile my daughter and friend tried their food. The hash browns were nicely browned and crispy but cold, there was no cheese on my daughter's "omelet" and both omelets looked like scrambled eggs with stuff mixed in, not even folded over. The manager was nice enough to remove the charge for my meal from our check, but for the $51 I paid for 2 meals with a tip, to say I was disappointed is a gross understatement. My friend scheduled a "let's reconnect" meet up and he picked Paul's. I hadn't been there for years since we moved out of my Lakes. I remember they had Good good with excellent service but I have driven by hundreds of times and never stopped. Too bad because my Greek salad with chicken was a huge feast. The greens were fresh and crispy, the dressing (served on the side so you can add as much as you want) and the grilled chicken was done to perfection! My wife and I try to visit as many NJ diners as we can. So don't ask me why in all the years of driving past Paul's, we never stopped in until today. I'm just glad we did, because Paul's was a great stop! Right on Rt 46, easy parking, and a nice window booth...all good! For breakfast, I went with the Italian omelette. The omelette was made with sausage, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese, and came with a delicious tomato sauce. Hash Browns nice and crispy, along with whole wheat toast made a great breakfast. My wife had French toast with bacon. Also very good and plenty enough bacon to share! The service was very friendly. The girl handling our table did a great job. Paul's is an institution. I grew up going here in high school a long long time ago. Still the same on the outside and a bit updated inside since 1981. The menu is full with sandwiches, breakfast and meals. My Greek salad with gyro had anchovies on the side. Hmmm. Not Greek. It was just ok. The steak sandwich was very filling. The three salads with tuna, egg, and chicken was also filling. I had to laugh because the specials came with your choice of soup. I had cream of spinach. It was very thick. Wasn't my thing. Dessert was a small jello, rice pudding, pudding or ice cream. Growing up in NJ and moving to the west coast reminds me of the differences in restaurants and diner fare. Serving jello as an option is one difference. Or maybe Paul's caters to an elderly clientele? I love how you park and drive right out of your parking space onto route 46. My son and I tried this diner last night. The food was extremely good and the service was fast and very friendly. My son ordered the sliders and sweet potato fries. The sliders were bigger than I expected and it came with a very generous portion of fries. I tried his fries, they were truly amazing. I ordered the chicken gyro with seasoned curly fries. The gyro was very good. The chicken inside was well seasoned and tender and it came with a lot of diced tomatoes, onion, and lettuce. The curly fries were out of this world. If I had to pick which was better, the sweet potato fries or the curly fries I would say the curly fries but they were both very good. I would highly recommend this diner. Came upon this diner when visiting a family member in the hospital a few miles away. I've eaten here every day just about during my week+ stay in town. With the exception of one "salty" waitress everyone was very pleasant. The food came quickly and absolutely delicious. They know how to do eggs very well here, fluffy and delicious - both the omelettes and egg sandwiches!! I would however pass on the home fries, it's really shredded potatoes (dry). Not a fan, I had to switch it out to french fries which were very good and plentiful. I'm very thankful I didn't get this salty waitress on the first visit otherwise it may never have returned and would have been missing out on a good experience. Breakfast, lunch and dinner specials are all very delicious and the portions are quite large. Coffee is full bodied and is a great eye opener. French toast and omelets are Great here. Paul's french fries are some of the best around so be sure to try them. Specialty sandwiches are also really great here my favorite is Paul's sandwich. Service is very friendly and helpful here at Paul's Diner and they have plenty of parking in their own lot located right off of Route 46 Eastbound. I visited Paul's the other night with several (8) family members, The host was very helpful and was able to seat us in a timely manner. The waitress was extremely helpful and went the extra step by brewing a fresh pot of coffee for us. My sons sampled a variety (5) of their hamburgers and found each one cooked to order and delicious. The Calamari was the size of onion rings but were cooked well with a great sauce on the side. The fish in the fish and chips has a strong fish taste, almost like it was blue fish. The chips were cooked perfectly. This was my own observation and should not deter anyone from ordering these meals. My husband and I love this diner. We come here a few times a month for any given meal. Always good, fast, friendly service. My favorite is the Souvlaki special sandwich and the minestrone soup. They also make awesome eggs and pancakes for brekkie. My husband loves the disco fries, Rueben sandwiches and burgers. Desserts are excellent too! We recently had the "chocolate explosion" cake there and oh boy. I could have died and gone to heaven. I do find that it always seems oddly quiet in there- I think it would add to the ambiance if they had some music playing in the background. Maybe a very silly thing that only I notice. And it's usually on the chilly side in there so bring a sweatshirt if you run cold. Also- note to manager: bring back the old home fries that you used to serve! On our way to go hiking at High Point State Park, we stopped at Paul's Family Diner in Mountain Lakes, NJ. When we got to Pauls Family Diner around 7 am, there were only a couple of other parties in the diner. Atmosphere: Paul's Family Diner looks like a modern, NJ Diner. The outside is chrome and draws you in.  The inside has plenty of seating including booths, tables, and a bar. There is a massive dessert case which captivated me every time I walked by. Coffee: The coffee was brewed hot and fresh. The coffee was excellent and at 7 am on a Sunday, you hope it is! Food: Paul's Family Diner has all of the regular options from breakfast meals including pancakes, omelets, and french toast. There are many different lunch and dinner options as well as a page of specials. They even had a sheet of breakfast specials (which you don't always see at a diner). I knew we were going to be out hiking for a while, so I ordered the steak and eggs. Steak and eggs is one of my favorite diner breakfast meals.  I'm more likely to order an egg meal versus pancakes. The steak itself was massive, and I ordered scrambled eggs which were cooked well. It came with buttered rye toast and hashbrowns, both were good. The meal was exactly what I was looking for, and quintessential diner. Service: We couldn't ask for better service. The waiter was friendly, and the food came out within 5 minutes. My co-worker and I ordered lunch from here and I received the most disgusting side order of onion rings I've ever had the misfortune of eating. They were coated with what seemed like Italian breadcrumbs and were just.........bad. Horribly, disgustingly bad. One bite and the entire order went into the trash. Dined in for a post-vaccination celebration meal. Kids got chocolate chip pancakes, A+. I got the Paul's sandwich which was quite good. I got the straight fries and my wife got the curly; my advice is get the curly fries, there was nothing wrong with straight fries but the curly fries were much better. My wife got a gyro which she enjoyed, it was very fresh. Only disappointment was the side of bacon we got, which was bland. Service was good.
