Good carne asada plates and enchilada plates. The real gem here is their hard shell tacos. If you know anything about the legend that is Arturos Puffy Taco in Whittier CA this is the closest thing you might find in the Ventura, Ojai food zone. Breakfast on the weekends is the best. A cup of menudo with a order of Caramel French toast is amazing. We also made sure to order Christmas tamales for next week. Cheese are my favorite. The place is clean and often has customers on the weekends. But the one and only time I went, this was what happened: The waitress acted like she was completely distracted and she was. Didn't know how to answer a couple simple questions I had about ingredients, didn't listen when I decided what I could eat based in my restrictions, brought me something completely different, and also screwed up my boyfriends order too and he had no issues or restrictions. It was appalling and way over priced for such simple and pretty tasteless fare. Disappointed, and looking back, I've heard it referred to as the 'drinkin place' sothat explains alot. Been here a few times and have really enjoyed almost everything I've had. (One time I got the chimichanga and was not a fan) Today I got the giant quesadilla with Asada and it was DELICIOUS! Literally cooked to perfection and the meat was tasty and tender. I also splurged and got the fried ice cream, which was the best I've had in a long time! The service is decent. Friendly and accommodating servers but seems like there's really only one or two running the whole place. This was my first visit here and everything about it was quaint. I ordered the chicken quesadilla. It looked great once it was served but as i started eating i found it had way too much cheese! I spent most of my time trying to take out the mounds of cheese inside. Don't get me wrong, i love cheese but not when there's so much of it that i'm spending the whole time taking it out. I ended up tearing the whole thing apart instead of being able to pick it up and eat it enjoyably. read more

I have absolutely had enough of this restaurant. Over the last several years the quality of their food has been annually going down. Everything from their tacos to their burritos. Their meat is always overcooked and dry. If your a vegetarian looking to buy a burrito, don't. Unless you're cool with just lettuce and tomato .. wtf? Cheapskates? Vegetarian burrito should be the cheapest thing on the menu, perhaps because it doesn't require MEAT!? I understand if you have to pay extra for guacamole and sour cream, but rice or beans should be included. On top of all that, my fiance asked for an extra bag of chips because she was ordering for both her and myself.... and they said it would cost $3, for a small bag of chips. Again... wtf! And when my fiance questioned their logic, and inform them that she was ordering for two, they were rude to her and gave her an attitude, embarrassing her in the restaurant in front of a packed house of customers. If you're in Oak View and you have a desire Mexican food, don't go there. For us, never again. Sad too, I've been going to this restaurant for over 20 years... This restaurant catered an event I recently attended the food was delicious. Santa Maria style Tri tip, chicken, garlic bread, delicious bbq beans with a salsa kick. Can I tell you about the cheese and Chile tamales! Oh wow, you need to stop by this restaurant and sample it's authentic Mexican cuisine. ......you won't be unhappy I guarantee it! Always good food, great when they're busy. Prices make up for anything lacking in atmosphere, which needed a facelift 10 years ago. Staff is helpful. Your initial service needs are always accounted for & extremely prompt. Staff does have an unfortunate habit of getting lost in the shuffle if busy. Should you need a refill or check make sure you're accompanied, so the wait doesn't seem longer than actually is. read more

Did you know that they do not precook their chicken like most mexican restaurants. It is a great place to have casual meal and meet people you know form all over town. They are priced right and have your regular mexican cravings prepared with a twist of home. If you like cosy and familiar this is a good place to become a regular. Just came back from this place and it was so good. My husband had the chili rellenos and he said they were fantastic. He said they were so good that if they were his last mean he would die a happy man. I had the tostada grande and it was good too. The strawberry margarita was pretty darn tasty too. I was shocked when we got our bill. Besides the food, I had 2 margaritas and my husband had 2 beers and it was still cheaper then other Mexican restaurants we've been to. The waitresses are very pleasant, the atmosphere is homely, the food is amazing. If you haven't been to Casa de Lago in Oak View, please try. I'm somewhat of a mexican food connoisseur (self-proclaimed) and in my travels throughout California I have not found a place that is as consistent across each dish they serve. You come in and sit down, they provide chips with two versions of the same salas (one is hot, one is not). Careful not to eat the whole bowl, the delicious meal has just begun! If you're not here for the chips, you're probably here for the burritos. Sure, they have the Tostadas, Ensaladas, Nachos, Tacos and everything else (which are superior choices at most other mexican restaurants), but the gold star goes to their burritos. They're served wet, and you have an option of making it a combo plate which adds Rice and Beans. I order this when I know I have room in my refrigerator and no lunch plans established because I love their rice and beans, but it's way too much food otherwise. The burrito I recommend is... well... I haven't tried them all so I can't be definite about this because I have a problem (that most people have), which is each time I've tried a new burrito, I eat it for 6 months regularly; hooked! My first love was their Beef Burrito. It's beef cooked as if it's been in a crock pot. They throw some of their amazing salsa on it, beans and some of the things that make the beef in the crock pot and there you go, delicious. To get myself off that hook and try something else I eventually had the great idea to invite someone who had never been there and encouraging them to try something else so that I could sample a bite; it worked. She ordered the Chicken Fajita burrito. Wow. Words fail me. The man in the back making this thing is an under-appreciated magician, everything is seasoned, cooked, and wrapped perfectly. It's a mozart of taste sensation. For kids instead of the boring old Bean and Cheese burrito, ask for a side of Rice and Beans (they're absolutely great), with tortillas on the side. Let the kid make an experience out of it, and they'll love it way more then the simpler bean and cheese burrito. I live in Hawaii now, and when I yearn for great California mexican food, the first thing I imagine is Casa de Lago. read more

The ONLY great restaurant in Oak View! So, I have been eating here off and on for about 14 years now since it's been mere blocks from my house for about that long. I don't really eat inside the restaurant itself since I just get it to-go, so I can't attest to that anymore. My FAVORITE items now are: -Chicken nachos -#15 combo: Chile Verde Burrito w/ Spanish rice and beans -Chile Relleno Burrito -Beef Tamales I have also gotten their Carne Asada "Giant Quesadilla", but it just is too big and not in my list of favorites but still worth mentioning. Their shredded beef taquitos are also worth mentioning, too! They are my mother's favorite from here. And, the tortilla chips and house salsa you get for free are good as well. Anyways, unto to food! Everything is really fresh and delicious - you won't be disappointed and feel full and happy. The chile rellenos are cheesy, amazing, and have a great flavor to them plus are even better in their burrito counterpart. Their tamales are fresh and light but filling, too. The chile verde has extremely tender pork, great flavors and spices and if you get the combo the beans are spectacular with a generous portion of cheese on top and the rice is good. Any burritos you get "wet" are slathered in their own house sauces to compliment the dish and are awesome along with some cheese on top. But, really, if you're a fan of Mexican food - anything you get is delicious here! It is true the quality of food tends to vary once in a while, though - it's not uncommon that I've gotten my favorite chicken nachos and they've had burned and black tortilla chips in the corners or a bland or flavorless burrito. Good food and a DEFINITE local staple in the valley, I'll keep coming back again and again. read more
