This is the first whole food plant based restaurant I've been to and I absolutely loved it! Their food is organic, vegan (no meal, no dairy, no eggs) and whole food plant based (less processed foods, no oil, no sugar, minimal salt) and it's extremely nutritious. It's a cafeteria style food system where everyone pays the same price (14+tax, no tip), and you pick your food up in the kitchen, eat and put the dishes back. The day I went there I got a clear veggie soup, 2 salads, sautéed veggies and a side of beans. They also have an organic tea, 2 teas - but I didn't like them. However, my brother absolutely loved the hibiscus tea. This was the first restaurant where I ate and didn't feel weird after eating it lol. Vegan hippie paradise. I think that this restaurant encapsulates keep austin weird. Walking is it like coming into a zen mental state. From the green entry walkway, to all the chimes, how can you not be instantly calmed. I love how this is kind of like a cafeteria style restaurant - certain blew all my school cafeteria lunches out of the water. Everyone on my plate was basically green and I'm not complaining. My favorite was definitely the taco - the kale tortilla held together an Amazing guac with veggies. Honestly I just want to eat spoonfuls of guac. They are consistent as I have gone several times for dinner as any college food hall for a community. I do have to say the desserts are not as great and the variety of meals is lacking between weekdays. I've heard so many good things about Casa De Luz from my friends, both vegan and non-vegan. I'm mostly plant based, so I was pretty excited to try it out. The community here is great, I came here with a friend after a nice yoga class at 3rd Eye, and I really love the peaceful ambience. The portion size is really quite sizeable, but you don't feel sluggish or bloated afterwards because you aren't eating heavy meats or anything too oily. Everything I ate was good, from the soup, to the salad, to the pickled onions, to the guac taco, but nothing in particular stood out. It was like eating a bunch of veggie starters, and most everything was a mushy or puree like texture. You can parallel park curbside or in a City of Austin lot across the street. Either way, you're paying the meters. You walk in through a lush tunnel that immediately puts you at peace and ease. You may see people in lotus positions meditating. While it gives a real laidback, hippie vibe on the way in, the narrow walkway opens to a large courtyard with ample outdoor seating. You go inside to order. Order is a bit of a misnomer. Everyone eats the same meal, with your only options of beverage (included) or dessert (optional). It's prix fixe and served somewhat cafeteria style--although the line is short and mostly comes to you. The menu is insanely healthy and vegetarian. Seating indoors is dark and gives sanctuary. I've had many a serious conversation within these walls. They hold many secrets, I'm sure, but the relatively dim lighting is also relaxing. There are scant tables with a window view, which is slightly disappointing and almost contradictory for their namesake. The day I went they had greens with two nut sauces, steamed veggies, black beans, tortillas and squash soup. They also had oatmeal and another type of grain porridge. Perhaps the menu of items wasn't as tasty, but there seemed to be a lot of lettuce on the plate. I can't believe that I haven't reviewed the is place! We love going here! This restaurant is vegan and oil free which is hard to find. Most vegan food places have a lot of junk food - and even if they dont they still cook with oil. This place does not cook with oil. Not only that everything they serve is natural and organic. Love love love this hidden gem, in the middle of Austin downtown chaos! The moment I walk in, I feel a sense of calmness. The vibes of this place are very zen! There are hammocks and places to hangout by the tree stumps giving an illusion of a tropical giveaway! I usually come here about once a month for a detox and macrobiotic meal, which is sourced from their own garden. The menu is fixed everyday based on the daily harvest. A complete meal (soup+salad+entree+tea) is $14 plus taxes, which is a bang for all the nutrients stuffed in the food! The food is minimally processed, organic, always fresh and served with love by the volunteers in the kitchen. Their desserts are also minimally processed and they usually have a selection of coconut milk puddings, pies, and parfaits for an additional $4.50. This place also has a ton of wellness classes and activities throughout the day. I have taken an African dance class here with Jean and it was a lot of fun. The classes are about $17 for drop ins, which is comparable to other classes in the area. A massage/class at Casa followed by their meal with a friend or SO is my ideal self-care day. read more
