I've visited this place twice, and both times, I've been disappointed with the quality of the food and drinks. However, the service has always been exceptional. During my recent visit, I ordered a cocktail called Purple Haze, and it tasted like they used a lot of 99 shot liquor. Which is very cheap and tastes like rubbing alcohol. I have always passed by but never stopped. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews before coming, because I wouldn't have stopped. It was worth the effort. We got there around 11:30 on Sunday and were seated immediately. The menu had plenty of options, vegetarian and healthy meals as well. I ordered the taco plate with beef, my husband ordered the mole and a side chile relleno, mother ordered the chorizo and a chili relleno. My husband is picky about his mole and he was impressed with the flavor of the sauce. The chili relleno was also well done and tasty. The plates were large and filling. We all had "to go" plates. Food overall was good. I think they use less salt to cater to those who can't have much in their diet, but that can be added and it was still flavorful. The booth was old school and cozy. I really enjoyed reading the old framed newspaper on the wall. Servers were kind and attentive. We will be going back and am glad I didn't base my decision on the reviews. read more

Been wanting to try this place for a while since it is busy most of the time. I asked the waiter which of 2 dishes he recommended as it was my first time. Shredded beef taco and Chile relleno plate is what was recommended. I was hoping for a great experience but it just didn't happen. The chips were greasy and neither of the 2 salsas or chips had salt. The spicy salsa did have some decent heat but both were too tomatoey and lacking flavor. The plate was much smaller than I expected but it was packed to the rim of the plate. The refried beans were really good but that was about it. The rice was fluffy and okay. The shredded beef taco was big and crispy but the meat was lacking flavor. The Chile relleno was the biggest disappointment. Lots of batter and it appeared that they included a piece of American Cheese in the battered portion along with some kind of white cheese inside the chile. The sauce used over the Chile relleno seemed like pure tomato sauce again with no salt. The service was good and the ambiance is good for get togethers and the bar was well stocked. My wife and I have been here only a couple of times. There were several years in between each time and when we go there we think the place was just okay but decided to try again. We went there yesterday and again its just okay. Nothing special at all. My wife had the two chicken tacos w/ rice n beans and I the chicken nachos. I was surprised at how quilckly the food came out and then when I saw my nachos, the cheese melted very much at all which explained the speed. The chicken on my nachos was not seasoned at all and the whole meal just lacked real flavor. My wife said the same thing about her tacos. The meat wasnt very flavorful and the rice was just okay. She did however like the beans. Overall, for a price of $50 for nachos and taco combo and two ice teas (not including tip) I think is over priced. Ked in today for dinner, the parking lot 8s pretty small and there is not much room to park. We walked in to a few folks waiting and we're not seated right away. The bar area seems pretty busy and like there is high chatter in the area. We waited maybe 10-15 Minutes to be seated. There is also an outdoor patio area. I am surprised we waited so long when there were seated, I noticed more than 6 booths open. Once seated we got drinks, chips, salsa right away. Once orders were in our salads and soups Came out quickly. The salsa is good, but needs salt. Good chips too! The abodigas and tortilla soup is good. Salad is good too, they have good ranch!! Coffee presentation is good, and it comes with the cutest cream! I ordered a Skinny Margarita. It's taking a really long time to come out, I think they forgot.... Our food came.out pretty fast. We picked up a to go dinner earlier and we were extremely disappointed with the food. The flautas were soggy, sitting on top of melted cheese and beans. Guacamole had no flavor. The burrito was cold, covered in cheese and a sauce with no flavor. Tacos were skimpy, very little meat, cheese or lettuce. I thought about my disappointment with the food and made a call to the manager on duty tonight to express my disappointment and frustration. After explaining my disappointment with the meals she just hung up on me with no response to my comments. Most of our $70.00 meal was thrown in the trash. I have been coming here my whole life. I can't believe I have not reviewed it. This is gringo Mexican food (and I am a gringo). 40 years ago it was an adventure but now it's comfort food. All the food needs lots of salsa for flavor. The good news is that they give you two of them: one mild and one spicier. The stand-out at the restaurant is the chips: they cut and fry them in-house with regular corn tortillas not the thin chip tortillas everyone else uses. I'm not sure how long it's been since the new owners took over, but I went there on a Wednesday with my friend and the following Wednesday with my wife for lunch. The food was the same, it's good. It's not as authentic as one would think, such as Las Palmas, but it's made more for the pallet of the northern culture.I was there about 3:30 on a Wednesday, and we were the only people in the dinning area. Many of the tables hadn't been wiped down but they had been bussed. The atmosphere is what was different to me. It was low energy and quiet--not the vibe that I used to get when Art owned the restaurant. I know there's always a transition when a new owner takes over, so I'm waiting to see how it turns out. I did notice that only one or two of the employees that I recognize are still there. According to them, the owners not changing the food or menu too much but I did notice that instead of just the health nut chicken salad there were like 12 different types of health nut salads which some of the meats on there are definitely not in the healthy category. The service was fair, the person that took our order was very on edge it seemed. They kept asking us four or five times if we're ready to order and if we wanted more water when our waters were almost to the top. I wanted to place an order for my wife first because I wasn't sure what I wanted and the server asked me if I needed more time or should she take away the plate or if I wasn't going to order. she said it would only take a few minutes for the burrito to be made, so she would put it together. Interestingly enough that's not what I asked. To me it felt like I was being pressured into ordering. The prices are fair. The lunch specials are good and there are large portion. If you do have lunch there I would suggest getting the mini burrito with a shredded beef and beans. It comes with rice and beans as well, and definitely you can share it. For me it also seems that the clientele has changed. I'm a resident of the city in which it's located, and I know many of the people that used to go down there. When I fined there, the clientele was quite different. It seems to me since Zendejas closed down some of that clientele has migrated to Casa del Rey and they are quite a different ilk. I grew up blocks away from the Casa del Rey location in Temple City. It was my parents favorite place and the price was affordable. I moved near the San Dimas location 15 years ago. That said... The restaurant did not seem overly crowded yet we waited almost 10 minutes for anyone to appear at the front desk. We did get seated immediately after someone showed up. The food here at the San Dimas location was just not worth the price. Its an all new menu with way too many options. The Margarita was very weak at almost $15. Burrito was not bad. Flautas were the worst, no flavor, dry, etc. We will give the leftovers to our dogs. I always order a cheese quesadilla at every Mexican restaurant as my base item. If you can make a good quesadilla the rest of your food is probably good. Casa del Rey used to be my favorite cheese quesadilla! The one I had tonight was terrible. Cheese did not even go to the edges. At just under $13 it didn't have much cheese and now side items like sour cream and guacamole are an additional expense at over $2 each. So I guess it was the bartender that greeted me and said they were short staffed and it would be about 5 minutes, I was by myself and said no problem I will wait, she took my name and put it on the list, ten minutes later I didn't hear anything and other customers were coming in and being seated, so I walked up and waited about 5 more minutes and finally someone else walked up and said can I help you? I said you're kidding I was on the list and I was in the waiting area but this didn't seem to mean anything to them and they said I just started working but I can seat you and I said no thank you I'm leaving. So it's up to anyone that reads this that it's up to you to take a chance and maybe you will get better service. read more

I mentioned it to the waitress and she took my soda to the back to replace it with a new glass and you could tell the glass was still the same and it was just wiped down. I met with an old friend of mine who I haven't seen for over a year and decided to meet up for a dinner. We came around 530pm on Monday night and the restaurant was almost packed. The parking lot is quite small but you can also park on the side street. The place looks the same after all these years. And the service good as the server keep coming by to check on us. We got complementary mild and spicy salsa with crispy hot chips. I requested pico de gallo which was of course free of charge. I ordered chicken taco with cheese enchilada combo plate. The taco was delicious and crunchy. The rice portion was way too much. I enjoyed my meal. My friend ordered cheese enchiladas with vegetables on the side instead of beans. The cook misunderstood and my friend got the vegetables stuffed inside the enchilada. My friend liked her dish. read more

Outstanding food I live in Washington state and on my trip to California. That's one of the first places I stopped to eat great food.

Been coming here for years. We got the chicken flatas dinner plate and the carnitas dinner plate both come with salad or soup we choose the salads. Everything was really greasy way more than normal. Beans were really off from what they use to be. Both salads were old and browning all over. We drive from chino hills to come this is going to be the last time. Something must have changed.... Management... ownership etc. if it was just one thing I would think it maybe was an off night but everything we ordered was not to the normal standards. read more

The good: Our waitress was friendly, switched out a flat coke for a soda water like we asked, but still charged us for a coke which was 3 dollars more . The bad: As a mexicana, I am used to my familys' home cooking, so unfortunately this just did not do it for me. I ordered the #10 which is a Chile relleno and an enchilada combo. My husband ordered a beef taco with a Chile relleno. Now the difference between myself and my husband is that he is way less critical when it comes to food. After biting into his Chile relleno, he said this tastes like a dirty sock . No I have never served the man a dirty sock but hey ... to be honest the texture of mine was thick and stiff ... the sauce ? Well . My enchilada had delicious melted cheese on top, yet the cheese inside was cold and grated ? They brought a "spicy" and a "mild" salsa with chips. Unfortunately they both were pretty bland. All in all I'd say the food is not quite authentic and possibly caters to the demographic which is understandable. I'd highly suggest playing soft music or something in the background because its so dead quiet, you can hear everyone else's conversation. I cannot believe I have not reviewed Casa sooner!!! Our family has been coming here for about 25 years. It's hands down one of our favorite spots and is a definite comfort food for all of us. Food is consistently amazing. My favorite items are the chicken tacos, enchiladas, health nut chicken salad, side salad (THE BLUE CHEESE IS TO DIE FOR), bean burrito. My family also loves the vegetarian burrito, taquitos, and tostada salad with beans. Their refried beans are the best (even my fiancé who doesn't care about refried beans loves them!). Margaritas are always good (I do raspberry blended with sugar rim). But the best part... the chips and salsa!!!! Chips are always perfectly warm and salted. Salsa is so good (mild and hot!). It's almost forearm-sized and comes with even more rice and beans on the side. It's filling and a good value for the price, though it's pretty much just beans and cheese in a large tortilla. I noticed others recommend adding extra cheese, which might be the move next time. Tamale & Chicken Enchilada Combo - The chicken enchilada was a bit dry but decently seasoned.
