We went to Casa Gish Bac for dinner on a Sunday night with another couple. Unfortunately, we didn't know that there would be live music at ear-splitting levels--the volume was so high that we couldn't have a conversation, and my ears were ringing when we left. The food was good, not great. We ordered chicken mole, chicken coloradito, and chili rellenos. The two chicken dishes were served with rice and fresh tortillas. Service was good. I have meant for years to return but have only managed to do it a few weeks ago to this new location. It's larger than the old one, better for events, certainly, but a little less charming. The dining room was oddly empty, which, considering the food, is an undeserving state. We ordered a good spread for two: costillas de puerco, tlayuda gish bac, and barbacoa roja. Chips and salsa, as starters, were very nice; the salsas were neither watery nor bland. But we were comped a small plate of roasted goat intestine which went very well with the salsa verde to cut the relatively high fat content. We had not had goat intestine before; only pork; this was a generous introduction. The costillas were ridiculously tender, the sauce tangy enough to tempt but not to overwhelm, the rice and beans not afterthoughts. Unfortunately, the highlights of the meal were the other two dishes. I had come back for them. The tlayuda, with tasajo, chorizo, cecino, chicken, and nopales, was fun; we dove straight in. This is not a knife situation; use your hands and make your own chips. Of course we would rather have meat in a piece (cecina preferred over chorizo over tasajo for me, though all are good adventures), but the beans and quesillo provide a solid base to put anything atop. We too need the freshness of nopal or tomato or avocado for balance. And, for texture, asides from crunchy and chewy or firm, there's the crispness of cabbage, far superior to all forms of lettuce. Then there's the barbacoa. A bowl of red soup, some more cabbage, tortillas on the side. Back in Gish Bac, the tortillas came in a warmer; here, in Casa Gish Bac, they do wrapped in tinfoil. Considering the strain placed on table space by our order, the latter worked better that night. The soup is warm in ambiance and temperature. The meat is soft and the servings never enough. I wish it snowed in LA, for this is the soup I want in such a setting. Privately, adding rice to leftover soup stretches the memory into the next workday. To round off, more comped swan profiteroles. I went here for lunch today I was pleasantly delighted by the food I got to try here. I came here because I had never tried Oaxacan food and it came highly recommended so I thought I'd give it a try. I found out that this place has only been in existence for 3 months. It is located in the outskirts of Koreatown in a shopping mall off Vermont. I tried many of their popular favorites including the Horchata with all the fixings of walnut, cantaloupe, and prickly pear sorbet...Yum!!! The Jamaica sweetened hibiscus drink was good as expected. We got the Orden De Barbacoa Roja which was a young goat marinated in chile guahillo and Oaxacan spices served with a side of cabbage cilantro salad. I never had anything like this but the Tlayuda was recommended so we got it. It was so giantic in size. The picture in the menu does not do it justice. The actual dish was as big as a large pizza. This dish is a large Oaxacan tortilla with a spread of lard, refried black bean paste, topped with quesillo cabbageg, tomato, and avocado. The whole dish comes with 3 major meats laying on top which included 3 links of chorizo, beef, and marinated pork. One of my favorites ended up being the asada tortas. it comes in a traditional torta bread with quesillo, refriend black beans, mayo, tomato, avocado, onion, lettuce, and jalapenos. We added our choice of meat which was asada al pastor. We couldn't resist taking an order of their Chicken Mole each to go. They serve it with a boneless leg and thigh covered in their rich dark Oaxacan black mole sauce that is served with rice. I know it is simple but one of my other favorites were their fresh guacamole and homemade salsas. I am so happy I got to try authentic Oaxacan food that came highly recommended by a friend. Checked out this spot at there new location If you love oaxacan for you gotta come have you a plate We started of with pan de llema and chocolate drink , very delicious, we also had tlayuda with cesina , and red salsa chilaquiles, and emuladas with chorizo, disclaimer mole is delicious but has spice, all food was good and we eat, customer service is nice and attentive, location is an open space so there is alot of room for small and large groups, with a nice layout Would definately be back to try other dishes. read more

Food is good. But the attention to detail and the urgency is very much needed. Understanding that this location is new but we got there at 3:40 didn't get our food till almost 4:20 and didn't have anyone check in or anything. We asked for the check at 5ish and it wasn't until 10 mins had passed that we saw the check wasn't coming that I decided to get up and pay with the waiter. The nonchalant attitude and not even asking us if everything was okay was off putting. Didn't even tell me how much it was just grabbed the card and paid on the device. And mind you the place wasn't even full. I hope the waiters learn better customer service and have better attitudes. A smile and a thank you go along way. read more

The only thing better than a plate of barbacoa from Gish Bac is a TRAY of barbacoa from Casa Gish Bac. This stuff travels well and remains fall-off-the-bone tender. The consommé should be it's own thing - it's SOOOOO good, probably the best liquid I've had this year. Plenty of other fun bites like fried molotes or lardy memelas, but don't leave without a ton of barbacoa! read more

Checked out the restaurant on a Friday night. It wasn't busy at all and there is plenty of parking. The restaurant was very clean and the waitress was very attentive. The food came out quick and the portions were great. We ordered molotes and my god were they delicious. My boyfriend got a tlayuda with 3 meats and I got the memelas with tasajo. I couldn't help but stuff myself. For drinks we got Jamaica and an horchata. Both were the right amount of sweet. The owner was very sweet and asked us what we thought about the whole experience. I have been wanting to try this place out since I saw them open. But let me tell you that this has been an amazing experience from beginning to end. I ordered a Barabacoa plate which came with white rice and black beans. But Holly shit was this the best Barabacoa de Chivo that I have ever had. I couldn't even believed that I was eating goat meat. The seasoning and with the perfect amount of spices made it. The white rice and black beans were Bomb AF. It's served with two huge tortillas and a side of cabbage with cilantro, some limes, and a green salsa. The green salsa was okay for me. But even thought it was truly a perfect plate to have. The water never came, our food got to the table with no utensils asked for the water again. They can't say it was busy it was just one other table. Drinks shouldn't be taking 8 mins. Previously located off Washington Blvd, the restaurant recently relocated to Vermont at a shopping center with parking. The space is much bigger and has a lot of seating. The service is always reliably great and the food is amazing! Love the barbacoa roja place which comes with pansita (tastes like brood sausage with all the right spices) and fresh made tortillas. Everything I've tried here is delicious, including the tacos and burritos, which are perhaps not the most Oaxacan thing to order, but there's something for everyone. read more
