I'm a bit surprised by the overall rating for this location. Talk about a hole in the wall. If you see the sign in front of the alley, don't be afraid to go inside. Coming from Southern California we don't typically expect to get good Mexican food in other states. The quality of the food was spot on. So fresh and spiced to where the food is savory and not too hot. The guacamole had an interesting texture and was very good. The sign advertised Chile relleno at $12 but was on the menu for $16. Apparently, the the price on the sign was for an a la carte. No matter. It was delicioso! Rice and beans were amazing too. Located down an alleyway, it really feels like you're transported to a different location. Food: Fairly average especially at this price point. Ordered: Veggie enchiladas 2/5 - The beans weren't great, they tasted like beans from a can with a bit of a strange flavor. - The rice had a lot of salt and were over cooked. - Enchiladas themselves had green bell peppers that were still crunchy and not fully cooked, with very few squash pieces. Wild for food that barely passes as Tex-Mex (coming from a Texan) I speak Spanish -- just not their dialect -- and still caught our server calling me "pendeja nomás" behind my back. If you don't speak any Spanish, good luck knowing how you're being talked about. Service was affected by them probably figuring we wouldn't notice. This used to be our go to Mexican restaurant when we lived in Poulsbo. They had the best food. We were headed to Seattle for the weekend and decided to swing by Casa Luna for old times sake. There must be new owners because the food was awful. There was a new menu, that should have tipped me off. The salsa was the first sign it had changed. It wasn't the tasty, fresh salsa from before. The portions are smaller but the prices are higher. My favorite item, Enchiladas Suizas wasn't on the menu anymore so I got cheese enchiladas with red sauce. It was awful. The side of rice did not look or taste homemade. It was a half of spoonful scoop with burnt, crunchy rice. The enchilada sauce tasted like it was out of a can and it was lukewarm. Hubby got the fajita burrito with chicken. He said the chicken did not taste fresh like it used to, almost like it was pre-sliced frozen chicken. It wasn't big chunks of chicken like it used to be. The server was nice but never asked how our food was or came back to refill our drinks. Unfortunately I don't see us going back to this place which makes us sad because it was always so good. read more

Tucked back off the street could smell the fantastic aroma as it filled the streets. The staff was very friendly and where hussling table to table and making sure orders where completed. Very good and unexpected! While the beans were not what I'm used to in a refried bean, they were delicious. The tacos I got had an excellent crispy exterior, and wonderfully flavored steak on the inside. It's in a great location in downtown Poulsbo, tucked away down a cute little alley. What a nice find in a fun little town. Even the alley leading into the restaurant is utterly charming. The service was quite attentive and we were quickly seated. The salsa had a great, smokey chipotle type quality that packed sweetness and heat. My partner's chicken mole was good and he enjoyed the smooth rice that was different from traditional Mexican rice. I appreciated that I could get huevos rancheros in the evening. I was so excited then pivoted to devastation when the eggs came out over hard. I was quite sulky over not having runny yolks. The pico and pinto beans were a good accompaniment. This would have been a solid 4 if not for the huevos rancheros (which the menu says are served over easy) coming out way overdone. Still, I'd be back. Maybe just not for eggs. read more

Enjoyed an excellent lunch at Casa Luna today (March 25, 2024). I'm relatively new to the area (two years) and have been trying out various Mexican restaurants in search of some authentic and traditional tasting food. I was particularly excited to try Casa Luna because of some things mentioned in a negative review ... cinnamon in the beans?? Bring it ON! Not familiar with this? Look it up online for yourself. To quote one culinary site, "16th century culinary fusion that resulted in Mexican cuisine, the Spaniards brought spices to the New World, along with olives and olive oil, almonds, grapes, dairy and wool-bearing animals, rice, wheat and citrus. These spices, including cinnamon, cloves, anise, cumin and saffron, joined pre-Hispanic herbs and chiles to create the sophisticated, multi-layered flavors that are the hallmarks of fine Mexican food." Just saying... Oh, yes, the rice here has saffron in it too. NOT your boring Americanized orange Mexican rice. Food appreciation is subjective, and if you like gooey cheesy refried beans then this probably isn't going to be your style. Do you typically fill up on multiple baskets of chips before your meal? Then you might not appreciate the fresh and simple salsa with (IMO) a great balance of onion and tomato and chips without a lot of salt. The green tomatillo sauce has a great spice balance btw. This kitchen doesn't cheat and aimlessly throw mass quantities of jalapeños around just to create the illusion of spicy. I've had some fairly banal Mexican meals around Kitsap county, and I don't waste time posting "bad" reviews. I simply like to point out good food when I encounter it and today was one of those days. I had a special combo of a chicken enchilada and a pork tamale. (I like to sample the basics on my first visit) The masa was moist. The portion was plentiful but I didn't feel like a stuffed piñata when I left. Just happy!! My dining partner had a Taco salad and the kitchen easily accommodated a request for half and half shredded beef + ground beef. Tons of meat... the fried flour tortilla shell was like having dessert at the end. We devoured our meals and shared an ice cold Negra Modela. What a lunch... deserving of nice afternoon siesta. ¡Que Bueno! Our server was extremely pleasant and professional. A nice get-away on a drizzly afternoon. Come with a good attitude and a sense of adventure and surprise your taste buds with a satisfying change from the ordinary. This place may not look like much, but they have the most authentic mexican food that I have ever tasted in Washington state. I'm orginally from the southwest. The staff are very friendly. We sat outside and four different people came to our table at different times, refilling cups, taking plates etc. They bring house made tortilla chips with delicious medium salsa to your table right as you sit down. They let you chose your table. The tacos were superb! They cook the tortillas in the sauce just like they do in Mexico. They were crispy and tasty. Rice, beans and guac tasted so fresh too. TERRIBLE SERVICE AND FOOD. After recieving our menus we waited 20 min for someone to take our order. I had to get up from my seat to get the waitress. The Queso is disgusting it tasted like it came from a can and the consistency was not right. Ordered the chicken tortilla soup, it was alright. Definitely NOT worth the price AT ALL. Awesome little Mexican place down an alley near the end of Front Street! We stopped in for a couple of Pina Coladas before heading home, but my were they tasty! Strong coconut flavor without being cloyingly sweet. Really nice! Our server was prompt and friendly, and we enjoyed our (self-selected) table in the cozy alleyway, enjoying the vibe and the surprisingly balmy October weather. Be careful when you order a margarita and ask for tequila other than the house. Charged for an $18 drink when it should've been $9 according to the menu. The dollar amount next to the classic was erased. To add better tequila was misleading on the menu. Either way $60 for 4 margaritas is outrageous. Waitress tried to say we ordered doubles- we did not. A $15 trio dip and 4 margaritas shouldn't be almost $100 for 2- not in Poulsbo. I don't mind paying more for MORE but that wasn't the case. I live in the area and ate here for the first time recently and won't be back. Overall, it was pricey for the quality of food we got. The salsa literally tasted like it was going bad plus it was so runny it would hardly stay in the chips. The margarita was so watered down and tasted like it was made with a cheap mix. The bean had cinnamon in them which just tasted odd. The portions were just enough for one meal but were priced pretty high for the amount of food. Casa Luna is a hidden gem!! I have very fond memories of this restraunt over the years. So returning after almost 2 years was amazing. The place is still mysterious and visually appealing which I love. Our server, Mario, was absolutley wonderful. When he saw us at the door he immediently smiled and made us feel welcomed again, even without knowing me and my boyfriend's good story with the place. He even helped put our food away a while after we paid! I highly recommend this place and will always spread the word of Casa Luna. They even have more seating in the back for bigger parties. ONLY improvement could be more seasoning on the main food to make it pop. The salsa with the chips was very tasty! Overall, glad to have been back and hoping to return again someday. read more

Outstanding Mexican Food! We had the burrito, Chili Verde and chicken mole enchiladas. A great burrito full of flavor. The same with the Chili Verde. The mole has great depth of spices. I don't do spicy, but I couldn't stop eating the mole enchiladas. And the beans, OMG. It doesn't get better than this. We took everything home to eat but thought the little alleyway had a great feeling to it and would be wonderful during the summer. The inside dining area seemed dark but might be a nice hidden gem. The hole-in-the-wall aesthetic is super cool, but the food isn't anything special. Their rice is really lacking in flavor. Tamales are $14 and come as a meal (w/ rice and beans), but would be way better if it could just be served and priced as a side dish or appetizer. We experienced over priced and watered down margaritas, tasteless and oversalted food along with lukewarm food arriving on plates that were much hotter than the food. We realize that restaurants are staff challenged but if you're going to charge what you charge for food and drinks, I think a reasonable expectation is that one will walk away satisfied after paying $80 for two people for dinner. This restaurant was such a let down. It's got a super cute exterior tucked away in an alleyway. I was hoping I stumbled upon a really good hole in the wall restaurant but sadly the best thing there was my root beer. My carne asada was the worst I've ever eaten -- was salty and dry. Rice and beans were bland. Side salad came with no dressing --just some iceberg lettuce and a couple silvers of onion and tomato. And it was $7 to make matters worst. My husband got a burrito and said afterwards it tasted like they just opened up a can of beans and wrapped it in a tortilla. We were super disappointed because we wanted to like it but we couldn't. read more

I enjoyed the character of the alleyway to the restaurant, and the interior was very well decorated. However, the lighting was poor and the ambiance was that of a not-clean-but-not-messy-dining-room. The waitress was very kind and she made small talk with us. The food was good, although a bit salty. Pricing was relatively accurate.
