In our new hood looking for a joint we haven't hit yet, and my wife remembered this place because we were at the Greek place next door recently. Ordered a beer and my bride had a margarita... waiter came back to tell me they don't carry that beer anymore. Service strike 1. Ordered the house guac... nice blend of avocado, onion, garlic, and cilantro. There was maybe a cup of guac, not enough to really share and certainly not worth $22. It was to be served with red salsa...we asked the server to which he responded "I'll check on it"(but never returned. Service strike 2. Our burrito came, and we asked for a second plate, and again for the red salsa. It was taking awhile to get a plate, and the hostess stopped by so we asked again. Maybe it's normal here, but it was a little strange watching her sit at a nearby table chatting with other staff while our drinks sat empty. The food was fine but nothing memorable. We were served chips with three different salsas, but there was no explanation of what they were, which would have been a nice touch. On top of that, several drink options were unavailable, no tea, no sparkling water, no Coke, and no espresso, which meant no espresso martinis. Overall, the whole experience felt underwhelming. Came to this place yesterday since I was going to the Dodgers vs Padres game. The place wasn't packed with people, and we had to wait like 10 minutes for someone to even acknowledge us standing by their "wait here to be seated" sign. Once we were seated, the waitress was nice. It took a while for my filet mignon nachos to come up. I've had filet mignon at a lot of places, and what they gave me was just regular carne asada steak meat, which was weird to me. Horrible service. Made a reservation and showed up on time. Took 10 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge that we were there waiting to be seated. Two groups walked away before us for non acknowledgment. Then was told that they don't accept reservations on game day...Well then remove that from your options. Went for happy hour. We were greeted rather quickly. I ordered a house margarita, which was just ok. It was a little sweet and seemed like they served it in the ice they mixed it with rather than putting it in fresh ice. After drinks, we ordered a few items. It seemed like the kitchen was really struggling. Everyone's food seemed to take awhile. The carnitas had a lot of liquid, and no crispy edges. The nachos and caesar was ok. I also opted to try their PB tequila, but I wasn't a fan. I had higher hopes, but everything was just so-so to me. Our server was very nice, but seemed overwhelmed. Walked into this place by mistake. Almost didn't stay, but the owner made a good impression so I took a chance and I'm glad I did. The Cadillac Margarita was on point and perfectly made. The Mahi Mahi Ceviche was outstanding. Price point was good considering you are in the high rent district. All in all I will go back just for the ceviche. Probably the best I've ever had. I really wish I could have great things to say about Casa Octavio. We had a large group of 13, and had made a reservation the day before. It seemed like they were only staffed for a random Tuesday, which is strange when you have a table of 13 coming and it's a Friday. Our waiter truly did the best he could, but it was just him. There was a manager sitting near our table on his laptop for a majority of the time. My perception when I realized it was a manager was that he didn't care. Even then, when it seemed like our waiter asked for help he just walked away. One bartender, one cook and one waiter with a manager that was just there to hangout and not jump in was sad. I was only able to order one drink the entire time I was there, it took so long for everything. To get our drinks, to get chips and salsa, to order our food...and seriously about 45 minutes before our food started to come out!! Again, group of 13 with a reservation made in advanced and just one cook who was also doing the best she could. We could see her from the window next to our table and it was disheartening because she was cooking for the entire place...remember I said it was a Friday?!? The chicken on the Mezcal Chicken Alfredo and Chicken Cesar Salad that was ordered was very dry. I lucked out though, the ribeye on my salad was so so delicious! This is such an awesome gem downtown. I love their Cochinita Sliders! Spicy but not hot but rather very flavorful. They also have one of the BEST burgers downtown too and the good fries not that battered type that every other restaurant has. Also the tequila selection is incredible! Food wise, well, it's pretty meh. For dinner we had chips and salsa, cheese quesadilla, carne asada tacos and chicken mole enchiladas. All were under seasoned, seriously, the smallest amount of salt would go a long way. I had scouted this place out for a reservable outdoor space for a large group on a busy Saturday night bc I needed something super close to the stadium. Found this place and when we arrived there was one amazing person working everything front of house - bartender host server. Somehow, and I truly don't know how, he was able to serve our group even as we had many people dropping in and adding more to their orders. Of course on a night like that, one check only !!! The food, when I was selecting a place, was actually less important because I just needed the location to be correct. However, I loved my salad with Tofu (maybe the only thing vegan on the menu?) as it was AMPLE. Tacos were as can be expected in SD, delicious. My partner got a seafood pasta dish and unfortunately said his pasta was undercooked but again it was such a busy night - bound to have one part that doesn't go perfectly. We had lots of dishes and it seemed everyone had a great time which was the most important part. In sum, was beyond grateful to have a large patio we could have a reservation for as many patios nearby are small. For a busy night all alone the server absolutely crushed it. read more

My first time eating at Casa Octavio was to support the lgbt center of San Diego! We ordered the casa Octavio nachos with tofu and chicken mole enchiladas to split between 3 people. The tofu was scrambled and had a cheesy texture similar to cotija cheese. The mole sauce wasn't too sweet and the chicken was juicy. We left very full. We also drank a hibiscus cocktail, chamango margarita, and a house margarita which were delicious. Our server also recommended baby mango shots which tasted like juice but got us feeling silly, I highly recommend the drinks. For a pregame stop this place is great. The service, open air vibe, and pricing is spot on. Service is laid back and attentive, it's not the insane rush of pregame happy hour you find at other places. Location is right between two entrances to the stadium and makes for super easy access. While I can't comment on regular service I will say that they were understaffed given the buyout, but made a good effort. Food: steak tacos and the burger. Tacos were fine, but the meat was definitely on the dry side. Burger was nice and had an appealing smoky flavor. Others had the mezcal chicken pasta which they said was nice. Not sure if this is always the case, but they didn't have any soda. It's a tequila spot with limited other options and apparently just water if you don't drink. I don't think I would come back here again on my own for dinner, but it could be ok for a quick drink before a game or something. read more

Where do I begin! Would give negative stars if I could. First red flag should have been the restroom that literally had poop everywhere, on floor, on toilet, so disgusting. We started with appetizers that were not appetizing at all! Prok Belly Guac had what could only be days old pork belly that was so hard you could not eat it. The guac, was more like a hunk of avocado that was partially smashed on the end and a huge clump. We also ordered queso, which was just melted shredded cheese in a cast iron pan that that moment it cooled, turned into a giant lump of hard cheese accompanied by stale hard tortilla chips. Then we move on to the surf and turf tacos, which are marked as spicy, but the level of spice was absolutely awful. The moment the food hit your lips and mouth it went numb and you could not even taste the food anymore to tell if it was good. When we mentioned it to our waitress (who was very sweet) she told us that people complain about this all the time, to include both tables around us who overheard our conversation and agreed. She said she would talk to the manager (later told he was the owner), who never came and spoke to us. He stood across the room yelling at her in front of everyone. She came back very upset and apologized that he would not come and speak to us and he took $6 off our $254.00 bill which was actually charged us for 3 surf and turf tacos and we only had two. We were not even asking for discount but merely to speak to him about the meal. That is shameful behavior to not come and address your guests, and then to treat his staff that way and humiliate her in front of the whole restaurant is downright despicable. Additionally, we were seated in front of the window to the kitchen, and it was concerning to watch the cook smell the plate of meat that he was about to cook, as the other cook questioned him about it. The food here is very average and overpriced. We ordered the guacamole and carnitas burrito. The menu stated that the guacamole had tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and jalapeno. The jalapeno and tomatoes were missing. It was a very small portion for $22. It also was supposed to come with salsa, which was absent from our plate. When we asked for salsa, we're given a small 2 ounce portion on hot sauce. The burrito had flavorful carnitas but was very small. Also, the bathroom was a mess and service was subpar. If you're looking for decent Mexican food in this area, I would skip this place and go to City Tacos or Tacos el Gordo. read more

Casa Octavio is a new agave/tequila bar and lounge on the ground floor of the DiamondView Tower in East Village. The building is one block north of the right field corner entrance to Petco Park. When you walk into the place, what immediately stands out is the rows and rows of liquor bottles adorning the shelves on multiple walls. The sofas and tables in the back of the suite make for a nice area to relax and chill in a low-lit ambiance. The first page of the food menu listed the appetizers and entrees. It was primarily Mexican cuisine with a few noodle dishes, a ribeye steak, and scallops also available. The other page featured street tacos, a kids menu, and dessert. It was odd to have a couple of items for kids because this doesn't seem to be a spot where you would want to bring minors. If anything, the addition of a cigar bar would make this an even more adult establishment. I chose the Seven Seas Linguini for my meal. The noodles were served in a tomato base with roughly four pieces each of shrimp, mussels, and clams. Some whitefish and crab were also a part of the mix. The amount of protein in the dish was sufficient, however I would have liked more linguini for better balance. Perhaps the menu will be expanded at some point because as it stands, the Italian and American offerings seemed to be afterthoughts to the Mexican fare. The service was fine as I was one of only two parties dining at the time. My impression of Casa Octavio is that you would come here to imbibe after a meal elsewhere or following the conclusion of a baseball game or concert. The atmosphere feels more conducive for that compared to a full evening of food and drinks. read more

Service was awful from the start. I had a reservation because it was a concert night at Petco Park. When I checked in the hostess tried to be funny and said "Oh, we gave your table away." I didn't find it amusing. We were seated quickly though and waited about 10 minutes for a server to come to our table. We ordered our drinks and the server told us we needed to order our food right away because the kitchen was backed up. We were in no rush but because of the way she made it sound I ordered the first thing I saw in the menu. I can't even remember the name of it now. Our drinks eventually arrive and it's one of the most lackluster margaritas I've ever had. It was a simple "House margarita" but even those can be delicious if made right. Not here. Our food arrives and it looks like it was just thrown on the plate with a literal bunch of cilantro. Stems and all. Would not recommend this place to anyone. I wanted to try this restaurant because I love tequila and they have a beautiful tequila wall and all of my favorite tequilas. Let me start off by saying that this place is randomly empty 99% of the time and that they have one waiter (he has braces) who is so nice and makes the experience a 10/10 when he is there. The game was going and we could head the cheers and watch the TVs which made it feel like we were almost there ;) Enjoyed aguachiles, surf and turf tacos, and mole chicken enchiladas. The aguachiles were super spicy we struggled a bit but they were tasty. Another server let us know that you can get green sauce as well that was less spicy so opt for that if you're not a huge fan of spice. The surf and turf tacos were delicious and a great portion for the price point. 4 tacos, rice and beans for $24. The mole chicken enchiladas were also tasty, I'm not a huge mole fan so these were not so intense with a strong chocolate or smoke flavor like some places do.
