I've been wanting to try this bar for a couple weeks and finally made it out! We walked over from the San Pedro area which took us a little less than 10 minutes. Immediately after walking in, I appreciated the decor, ambiance, and how clean it felt! I went on a Monday evening so we didn't have to worry about any crowds or seating issues. The bartender was nice and very helpful. When she heard it was our first time she went through the entire menu. We tried the whiskey apple (freshly juiced apple!) and the greyhound (freshly squeezed grapefruit!). Both so simple, but very good. They do have two ATMs though, so no worries if you don't walk in with cash. They have a limited menu, though some creative offerings. The second night I had the daquiri, which was flavorful and a bit more balanced for me. Drink prices seemed reasonable to me. Friends had the frozen Irish coffee and loved it. They call their vibe "west coast honkytonk," which I think is spot again (though again, maybe just not quite for me). I am currently in the process of working my way through their entire menu (update: I have drank everything on their menu), but these are the impressions I have so far: -frozen Irish Coffee: amazing. I have no frame of comparison (apparently it's big in NOLA?) but it's delicious, sweet, and perfectly balanced with booze. get this! -greyhound: fresh squeezed grapefruit juice makes this drink, and they do it here. so get one! -daiquiri: the OG recipe made with 3 types of rum - if you like sweet, you'll love this. If you don't, try out the... -derby: a daiquiri made with bourbon instead of rum, it still hits that sweet/tart/boozy note. I like it a bit more than the daiquiri but that's personal preference. -7 dollar sazerac: is it the best sazerac I've ever had? No. Is it the best I've had for $7? yes. -smoked jack & coke: this one is a miss for me. I'm not sure how they infuse it with smoke, but it tastes a bit artificial and unpleasant, especially with the ice. Not a fan. They also have a small selection of pickles and nuts - traditional bar food you'd expect - but the vibes, the drinks, and the overall concept work so well I've been back several times since opening. Sooo, same problem about IDs. The person at the door took super long time to check my friend's ID, saying his "app" doesn't scan the ID. I don't know what is up with his app and the bar's way of checking ID but I guess it will up to his decision whether an ID is fake or not, or if he has bias on specific groups of customers. We tried to have some chill time on a tuesday night and thought the bar was a good choice but I guess the frustration is not worth the second try. I liked how the grapefruit juice was freshly squeezed. Had a nice tartness and really complemented the vodka. The inside has interesting decor. Bartender was very friendly. They have nice stools inside for sitting, so also like a lounge feel. However, please note that it is cash only! My friend had an apple whiskey drink and said the apple juice was good too. The ambiance is nice and the clientele is eclectic. Personally, I appreciate the vaccination proof requirement because I have a pre-existing condition that makes me super vulnerable to a heavy battle with Covid-19. It's dimly lit, has old bar paraphernalia and a jukebox. The artwork commemorates Johnny Cash (it's a Johnny Cash inspired bar) and really ties into the overall vibe. They have pool tables in the back room to complete the "dive bar" feel. We ordered some of the apple whiskeys which are delicious and simple: some whiskey and a whole juiced green apple. We also ordered boilermakers which are variable i pricing. I got a shot and a beer for $8. For downtown san jose, this is one of the cheaper places to drink. Beware, the name Cash Only isn't just because it is a Johnny Cash bar, it is actually cash only. They have an ATM for your convenience if you forget. The service is good and the ambiance of the bar is unique, the lost star comes from the drinks. I ordered the whiskey sour (they are known for this drink) and it tasted like watered down whiskey. I also ordered a daiquiri and it was not blended nor made very well. This is a great bar and definitely worth a visit. Cool atmosphere, great service and friendly clientele. It's definitely whiskey and beer focused but their specialty cocktails are great. As soon as we started to get in my friends were refused as they were told their real IDs were fake. We left as we did not feel the need to try to argue with a short angry male bouncer. We left without our REAL IDs and had to cut the night short as we had lost our way to have any chance of getting in anywhere else. 12/19/2024 Hi ladies ... was waiting for the restroom an intoxicated guy in a sharks jersey came leaning against the wall hovering over my friend. When the restroom became available I didn't feel comfortable leaving her so I had my friend come in with me. Theres a sign that says one person at a time but I've been to this bar multiple times to know this is not being monitored at all, others do the same. I didn't realize the guy had told my friend to stay out as I had walked in so he kept the door open as im starting to take off my clothes. He proceeds to tell me it's one person at a time as he's visibly drunk. I have her wait outside and when I walk out we had a verbal altercation to the point this guy starts cussing me out and tells me he's an employee(off the clock). I don't care who you are there's a way to go about things, while your drunk is not it. Employees on the clock should have noticed this and told him to walk away. A bartender that I let cut the line comes out and doesn't even bother to understand what's going on tells me I have to leave. They start yelling for Mickey and he comes and says I have to leave while I'm still waiting for my friend to finish using the restroom. As she came out we walked out of the bar and didn't say another word....sharks jersey comes out the bar yelling to "suck his dick". I'm near the corner light while he's yelling this and makes a jerking motion. I didn't even have a drink all I drank was water. For the owner Cache it's disgusting that you have people like this working for you and don't try to make an excuse that they're good people or that they're trying. From your previous comments you've said "folks get turned away at our door for being aggressive, intoxicated or otherwise unsafe amongst our respectable and laid back clientele". Check the cameras he's not the exception. I hope none of your daughters, nieces, moms or wives ever experience a night out where they encounter this. If I felt comfortable to go to the restroom alone I would but even in pairs it's clearly not safe even from your own employees.
