They have this small back parking lot which kinda sucked but there's parking across the street from them that's more spacious. I was greeted quickly when I entered and everyone was so nice and welcoming as they passed by. Service was quick and food came out pretty quick as well. What a gem of a place. Only serves breakfast and lunch. At lunchtime you better order dessert first. Once it's gone there is no more until the next day. You'll see the cases right when you walk in. Pick something and order it. The selection at lunch is very diverse. Personally I love the grilled pork chops. So tasty and moist with a great seasoning. I'm not sure of this but I bet they brine them. The wait staff is the best. From the waitresses to the busboys. You never feel rushed but their efficiency moves people in and out very methodically. And not to a fault. We never felt rushed to get done. Never. Get there early for lunch. So worth it. Lines definitely form if you get there later. But worth it. I need to check out breakfast here. Wow! Comfort food at its finest. Large selection to choose from! From the moment we walked in we were greeted with a smile and a huge display case of homemade desserts. The host said they sell out quick everyday, so order at the beginning of the meal. I'm not usually big on dessert at restaurants however, these are your grandma recipes that completed our meal. This place is AMAZING. The staff is always friendly and the food is just THE BEST. Their specials are my favorite and they are such a steal for the amount of delicious food you get! Only $7.99 ($8.65 after tax.) Tuesday is the pot roast, which I had today, and it was UNBELIEVABLY yummy! Best pot roast I've ever had!! Come here for breakfast on Fridays a couple times a month, and it is always consistent. Really fair prices for how filling the portions are. Generally when I am there it's seat yourself, and for a place so large and with so much foot traffic, I have never had an experience where it was more than 3-4 minutes to be greeted, have my drink order taken, the drink to be on my table, and my server asking if I would like a few minutes or if I was ready to order. Food comes out promptly and hot. I tend to be there for a minute and do some school related scheduling tasks, and my server has always done well to be attentive and continuously refill coffee and make sure I don't need anything. Further, I am always asked if I need any coffee/water to take with. I've had Rae as my server the last few times and she is a real asset. Clearly takes pride in being great at her job, and it shows in shaping a great experience. I know she has 100 things going on but even when I'm done always makes sure all her tables are promptly taken care of. Does a phenomenal job of understanding of her tables prefer high levels of interaction, or, like myself are less social. read more

Wanted to try this place because it was rated so well! But never could because of their hours! Luckily, this past Monday, I had the time to make it for lunch...and I am SOOO glad that I did. I definitely know now why this place is #1 in Lubbock! The meal started off very nicely. We were waited and greeted, despite the amount of cars outside...there was absolutely no wait! Our waitress was very nice and friendly. The decor was pretty cute as well! Very Texan and homey...and boy, was it crowded! We also used the Yelp "free appetizer" for chips and salsa...so that was great too! I ordered the daily special, which was chicken ans dumplings with a side. I chose green beans as my side. My boyfriend got the chicken fried streak, with green beans and mashed potatoes. AAAAAHHH the food was great! The cheese bread was absolutely amazing. The chicken fried steak was the best ever! I definitely recommend it. The chicken and dumplings were delicious as well...warm and had a great spice and flavor. If you can go to Cast Iron...I definitely would. I wish they had better hours! Love breakfast at the Cast Iron Grill. My family meets frequently to visit and have our morning meal. The food is just good West Texas breakfast food. Hearty, tasty and filling. Great coffee! Staff is amazing! This building a historical landmark. I remember coming here in the 80's & 90's when it was Stubbs BBQ and listening to the bands. Ribs were burnt, half the meat was more like beef jerky; covered in bbq sauce that might have had sugar or vinegar in it, but it was definitely gelatinous. Normal mac and cheese that the kiddo willingly ate and properly cooked fried okra which seems to be hard to come by in Lubbock (looking at you Cowboy Chicken (now closed) and Slim Chickens). Coconut cream pie definitely had cream on top (though not much sugar I don't think), the problem was beyond a small hint of coconut, the filling tasted, well not bitter, but tasted like filler. I dunno. Chocolate mouse pie was good. Were it not for our waitress forgetting to return my credit card or taking a while to come get it in the first place, I probably wouldn't have left this review. But my seemingly annual trek to this place reminded why I only come here annually, just long enough to forget why it's been a year since I was here last. read more

A co-worker from the area took me here for lunch, since I've complained about being tired of eating all of the same chain restaurants Lubbock has to offer. To say I was suprised at how GOOD it was and the service - would be an understatement. I had the meatloaf special with fried green beans and Mac& cheese. We received our meal within 10 minutes of ordering and I have no complaint about how good it all was! We did get there at 11:15 am, for lunch, and beat the rush- which is what I'd suggest. From now on, I'll be taking any out-of-town visitors (work included) to the Cast Iron Grill. If this is anywhere on their agenda, they will leave Lubbock with a good taste in their mouth. LOVE this restaurant. It's family-run, and the service is wonderful. The only downfall is that it's only open for lunchtime during the week, and is closed on weekdays. The rumors I had heard about their chicken fried steak led me to have some pretty high expectations. Well, I have to say, I was not disappointed. The sliders were heavenly! I came here last week for a goodbye breakfast with some friends. I ordered the pork chop with hash brown, eggs, and a pancake. I'm sad to say, I wasn't overwhelmed. The pork chop was pretty average. Eggs and hash were just fine. The pancake was pretty good, but they only serve plain buttermilk pancakes so if youre looking for chocolate chip or strawberry, look else where. My friend ordered a chicken fried steak and it was pretty good! We also had a slice of chocolate pie. I wasn't overly impressed what that either. Half of the pie was whipped cream. Nothing was bad, but nothing was great either. The service was friendly and attentive. Prices are good. I'll probably come back and try dinner but I'll pass on breakfast in the future. read more

As luck would have it, my work brought me over to this area on Tuesday and it was the opportune time to check it out. So glad I did! I tried the marinated chicken breast, seasoned green beans, mac n cheese, and a slice of coconut cream pie. The marinated chicken breast was delicious with lots of flavor, no dryness to it at all. The mac n cheese was tasty, and the green beans were really good. The roll they add in was just okay for me. That pie, though... that pie was AWESOME. Definitely grab your slice of pie the minute you walk in or it will be gone later. Love this little gem in Lubbock and will definitely be back very soon! read more

Today was my 4th visit and the experience was consistent with past visits: Great food, good service and fair prices. I had chicken strips with mac and cheese and fries. My wife had pulled pork sliders, my sons had chicken strips, chicken-fried steak and a club sandwich and my daughter-in-law, chicken-fried chicken. Everyone's food was fresh, hot and flavorful. As with previous visits, the restaurant was very busy but service was good. Most entrées are $7-$8. No desserts for us today but they are delicious! My only complaint with CIG continues to be that they are not open for supper or on the weekends. read more

In addition to the café being full, my wife and I viewed the yummy deserts on display - Talk about excellent looking deserts! The portions were huge! I had two pork chops, one grilled (better in my opinion) and one fried. The sides were their signature fried green beans with their ranch sauce (YUMMY!!) and fried okra. My wife had a huge chicken fried steak with regular green beans and sautéed brussels sprouts. Each meal came with a cheese roll that was out of this world. We had their daily special of cherry banana split pie. I wish I took a picture of it but it didn't last long enough to snap a picture of. This is my first time in Lubbock, Texas. Dropped by this place feeling a bit jetlagged hoping to get some decent food. What I ended up getting was the best chicken fried steak, and fried okra ever!! They have this Green Chili Gravy that is straight from Heaven!! I'm going to have to go back to California and try some recipes out to copy this stuff so I can get my fix of it in my own kitchen. Besides the delicious southern home cooked feel and food, the service was exceptional. Our waitress was Mariah, and my tea glass was never empty. This place is southern cooking at its best!
