I was there last Friday to give the fish another try. This, on the strength of a couple of positive visits I'd had there recently for breakfast where their fluffy and delicious cheese omelette and excellent hashbrowns convinced me to give the fish one more try. It was a disaster. Again. The first piece wasn't so bad--albeit very, very swampy and muddy-tasting-- (catfish can be mild, check my review of Teddy Jack's.) The problem was that the cook was sloppy and the remainder of my order of catfish had been batter-fused into one big three-piece lump so that when I pulled the pieces apart the fish was raw on the inside - still pink and yet cooked on the outside. I enjoy sushi so II ventured a bite of pink fish and quickly ordered dessert to get that horrid taste out of my mouth. My bill was 15 bucks and change, with water mind you. The waitress was very kind, efficient and stunning to look at, so I assured her that my meal was delicious and she got the rest of my $20 bill. This place is great if you can get in! They are unfortunately only open for breakfast and lunch on weekdays. They have a huge following so if you go for lunch you better get there early (before 11:30) or try again some other time. My family and I tried this place last week and we were all very impressed with the quality of food for the price and the extremely friendly service! Visiting Lubbock and found Cast Iron Grill - what a great restaurant! We had the best chicken fried steak I have ever eaten and I have eaten many of them! The biscuits and gravy melt in your mouth and everything thing we ordered was cooked perfectly! Angela was our waitress and she was delightful as were the other staff members. I came here for the chicken fried steak, but as I walked in I started to question my decision, because the burgers looked really good. I was greeted very nicely by the hostess, and led to my table, and left with a sincere "enjoy your lunch". My waitress, Jackie, brought my sweet tea quickly and it was good. I asked her about the check in offer for the free chips and salsa and she said sure let me get the approval. In about 2 minutes chips and delicious salsa appeared before me. Quite a large serving at that. When it came time to order I told her I was torn between the burger and the chicken fried steak. She didn't hesitate and she said you want the chicken fry. So I ordered it with the mac and cheese and the mashed potatoes (Andy style with bacon, cheese and butter). I asked her for a side of cream gravy too, no problem she said. The steak was really good, with a nice crust and good cream gravy. The potatoes were great, especially when combined with the gravy. The mac and cheese was good, but not on oar with the rest. This place is known for their desserts, but unfortunately I was too full to partake. They looked fantastic and I noticed that almost all of the tables ordered at least one, which is kind of unusual for a lunch crowd. I highly recommend this place. Took a group of guys that work for me to eat breakfast. Pretty decent food however it's about the same fair you can get anywhere else. Nothing stood out. Scrambled eggs were a bit runny. The pork chops were plain. I'm not sure what seasonings they think they put on them but they weren't flavorful at all. The biscuits and gravy were good. Better than most places. I'll definitely try it again. Won't have the pork chops again. Think I'll try the chicken fry instead! The service was above and beyond. 5 stars for service. Very nice all around read more

GREAT food. They have good lunch meals, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and breakfast. Most people are crazy about their deserts, but to me they are moderately okay. I picked up breakfast from Cast Iron Grill last Friday for my co-workers and myself. Food was ready on time and everything was still warm when I got there. I had an the Cast Iron Omelet which came with a side of hashbrowns and your choice of toast, pancake, or biscuits and gravy, which I had. The omelet was pretty good, though it wasn't the best I've had and the hashbrowns were a bit soggy (could be from sitting in a Styrofoam container for 20 minutes before I ate), but the biscuits and gravy were very good! Wow! What a find. My wife & I RV full time & come back to Lubbock to visit our kids & grand kids. This was my wife's second visit and my first. Today we both had country or chicken fried steak. For sides we had french fries and she had fried okra and I had the spinach. The chicken fried steak was probably the best we have ever had at a restaurant. The gravy was remarkably delicious. The fries were freshly made & great. The spinach was spinach. Good but wish I would have had the fried okra. It was made fresh & was really great. All of the staff were very friendly and they all helped each other out. What a great place. Don't forget the daily specials. Chicken and dumplings, pot roast, meatloaf, enchiladas and catfish. We're always happy to go to Cast Iron Grill! The food is made-from-scratch good. We've been three times and haven't had a bad experience yet! Hubby usually gets their burger, because well, he's that way. I've tried both their breakfast and lunch. This seems to be the only place in town where if you ask for crispy hash browns, the cook understands that means, "Extra time on the grill," not, "Drop them in a fryer." The chicken is delicious and so is the green chile stew. Even the service stands out. Our drinks never go unfilled and the orders come out right. Unfortunately we're either too full or too much in a hurry to have dessert, but they're the first thing you see when you walk in. Planning ahead for next time.....! read more

Cast Iron is Lubbock best home cooking restaurant. The Chicken fry is amazing and the daily specials rarely disappoint. They are not without flaws, the Pot Roast can sometimes be over salted. The selection of pies and desserts is excellent, but the "cream" on the pies tends to run to the thickness of butter at times. BUSY at lunch,so come early. Service is excellent. read more
