We took our son and his family to the Cast Iron Kitchen for his birthday breakfast. Every time we come to Wilmington, we always stop in for at least one breakfast. It is a small restaurant with a friendly staff. The last two times that we have gone have been on the weekend and I highly recommend that you make reservation since the line starts forming shortly after it opens at 7:30AM. A hostess greets you at a desk outside of the restaurant and shows you to your table, the waiting area is outdoors. The servers are friendly and attentive. They were especially good with the kids. This time I had the Day's Special Omelet: Crab, Lobster & Bacon with Arugula, Onions, Tomatoes & Swiss topped with Hollandaise Sauce. It came with grits and Sourdough Toast. I also had a side order of bacon. My wife had another one of their Specials of the Day, French Toast: Mixed Berry Bread Pudding with Honey Bourbon Syrup with candid Pecans and Whipped Cream. She also had a side of crispy bacon. Bothe meals were cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. I had a delicious lunch today via takeout. I have been in the restaurant a few times but every time I go there is a huge wait. Sometimes the parking lot is completely full. I guess that is a great sign that they are good. I absolutely loved the macaroni salad. It was very unique. We arrived at 8:45 on a Sunday morning in June, and there was already a wait and a crowd outside. They do have a free tea station outside to keep you hydrated while you wait. Based on the long wait times and number of people waiting, it would be nice if they had more places to sit down outside (currently they have just 2 benches and 1 chair). If you want coffee while you wait, you can order and pay inside ($2.75 for a cup). We were seated after waiting about 20 minutes. Our waiter was great; he recommended a few things on the menu. Our table ordered the waffles (very underwhelming, thin, and lacked flavor); a biscuit with pimento cheese, sausage, and eggs (nice flaky biscuit but didn't love the sausage), the red eye pulled pork hash (flavorful and a huge portion), the root hash (yummy and all veggies), a southern biscuit (big portion and flavorful), and grits (very flavorful and our favorite thing we tried). Overall, I would recommend this restaurant. Come early and be prepared to wait, but the food is worth it if you like rich, country cooking. If you are on a diet or trying to eat healthy - skip this spot! read more

I went here yesterday morning for brunch after some Black Friday shopping. The meal was on point and the decorations were very fitting for the name. We were in a group of four and had to wait a little bit because they were pretty busy. After eating I do not regret having waited! Our table started with the "Buffalo Pig Ear Crackens" and oh my gosh it was good! It came with a side of pickled salad that was just delicious. My main meal couldn't have been any better! I had a breakfast biscuit with potatoes on the side. My breakfast biscuit was bacon egg and cheese, the cheese I chose was pimento and it was amazing. They actually sell pimento cheese tubs there. As I type this I am now regretting not purchasing some! I had more shopping to do though so it's probably good that I didn't purchase any and let it sit in the car. Cast Iron Kitchen receives a lot of well-deserved attention in the food community of Wilmington, as well as the greater coastal area. We came later in the afternoon, closer to their closing time, and were able to get a table in under 20 minutes. Although it isn't publicized, our waiter told us that we could call ahead to get on the waitlist around 45-60min ahead of time. The environment is that of a collective farm house, with displays of information regarding where the food is sourced in NC. The food itself was very fresh, filling, and relatively quick. The restaurant doesn't have a lot of small tables, so we saw a lot of 6-top tables occupied by couples, so maybe bring some friends with you! Overall, the ambiance is good, there is outdoor seating available, everything is fresh and well-season, and I would highly recommend to anyone who doesn't mind waiting a bit for a table. read more

I'm a big diners, drive in & dives fan and saw that Guy had favorites on the menu so it was automatic yes for me! I got the Chicken & Pancake (comes with hot honey syrup or regular syrup, I got both lol). The hot honey syrup was so good, especially for you like the sweet and spicy thing. We yelped Cast Iron Kitchen for a brunch before flying out of town. I was in search of shrimp and grits, and these guys gave me exactly what I was after. The grits were rich, the sauce was bright with some good spice. Lots of big, juicy shrimp too! My wife ordered a biscuit special they do with fried chicken, bacon, and sasuage gravy. It was way over the top, and though I was there for the shrimp I definitely traded plates for a few bites. Friendly staff, quick service once you get seated, and free drinks outside while you wait.
