Cast Iron on 17th has delicious food. We were very happy with the serving sizes. Their bread is amazing, with just the right balance of crumb and crust. The atmosphere is strange and doesn't match the high-end food vibe. It feels like eating in a thrift store with mismatched knickknacks everywhere. Even your salt and pepper shakers on your table don't match. They were trying to be eclectic but it didn't quite work.

The food was decent, but honestly I didn't see the value for the cost. I've had better steaks elsewhere in town for half the price. The atmosphere is pretty cool, none of the glassware at our table matched and a few other oddities that made for a fun dining experience, mostly the company we were with.

Dressed up and on reservation, we arrived a tad early and were promptly greeted. Maybe hospitality isn't Wyoming's forte, but all of the staff did not seem happy to see nor serve us from the beginning. The booking site only offered high top tables, so that's what I selected. When the hostess asked if we'd like to switch to a table, she was sternly corrected in front of us that it "wouldn't be possible" by another staff member. The interaction felt unprofessional in front of guests, and as if they weren't willing to accommodate us. On top of that fiasco came plenty of glares and stares from staff throughout our visit. Crawfish & Dumpling - 9/10 For the table. Pungent; a few bites satisfy. I've never had crawfish in this setting. Perfect gnocchi. Delicious all around. Oyster Shooter - 8/10 Fairly priced, fresh. Nice bloody mary. Rabbit Ravioli - 6.5/10 Stingy portion of meat. Ravioli is just okay. The fried carrot nest was fun but it was too much for the serving. It's a carrot salad with a bite of meat and maybe 5 ravioli. Bar Steak - One came overcooked and one under. Sides were mediocre. Uninteresting mashed potatoes. Our waitress tried to take our order almost immediately after being seated. She visited few times after ordering. With a 5:30 reservation, we left by 5:57 thanks to the small portions and staff seeming to rush us out. In a tourist destination, I would imagine better hospitality and warmth from local workers. Not many smiles here. I typically tip well, but they didn't seem to want us there and the experience really dampened my entire party's mood.

Kids had chicken tenders and the steak and fries. Both kids enjoyed their meal. The chicken tenders were huge and kid got 3 of them. The steak was about 5oz, which was a decent size for the kid. It came pre-cut, so the kiddo didn't have to handle a huge steak knife to cut it--which was nice. Both came with a generous serving of golden French fries. Fresh cut or frozen, these fries were good! Either a second ramekin of ketchup or a larger one is definitely needed for the amount of fries served. I had the burger. It wasn't fancy--just cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onions--but it was a thick patty with fluffy bun with lots of flavor. It also came with a ton of golden fries. My mom had the BLT that didn't skimp on the pork belly. I wish the stores sold thick cut bacon like that. She said it was delicious. Hubby had the lobster roll. The kids brought the purple potato chips were the neatest thing (they were good, too). The lobster roll was perfectly dressed--not too much and not too skimpy--and tasted surprisingly fresh. This place is a little more upscale than some of the other places we've eaten at this week. We were welcomed as we were--shorts and tees. Other guests were dressed casually, not overly fancy. The adjacent museum was a cool place to visit, too. It housed 3 restored Navy planes that were neat to see. Since we're headed home tomorrow, we won't be back, but if we were staying longer, we'd make the ~hour long drive just to eat there again!

However, our food experience was also mixed. We shared a soup du jour (potato bacon broth based) which was awesome. Parmesan fries app came as a generous portion and were pretty good as was our elderberry mocktail. The big disappoint was the tandoori chicken which the waitress recommended but we found to be very dry. It was described on the menu as having a yogurt marinate, which was already mixed into the dish, but we couldn't really taste it. The tabouli/rice that came with it was also dry and didn't have much taste. The waitress was nice and tried to get more sauce but when she couldn't, she brought olive oil and vinegar which was ok but at that point I would have just liked something different as it was pretty mediocre. Forage is a nice restaurant with some nice options but you should expect to spend a fair amount. I would expect the fine dining experience quality to match the price, but we had enough good food here that I would come back to try something different.

After a few days of "well, that was expensive" meals, this place felt like striking gold. We're not meat eaters, which can sometimes make dining in these areas a bit of a scavenger hunt, but The Blue Lion delivered anyway. The scallops were spot-on, the scampi pasta was bright and balanced, and everything tasted like someone in the kitchen actually cared. And then there's Colin, the manager--who somehow manages to be attentive, engaging, and completely unpretentious all at once. He chatted with us about food like we were old friends, made sure every detail was right, and turned dinner into an experience rather than just a reservation. Our server was equally dialed in, catching nuances in our order that most places would miss. It's the kind of service that feels effortless but clearly isn't. The vibe? Cozy, welcoming, and just the right amount of lively. The kind of place where you linger a little too long and start thinking about what you'd order next time. Our servers were spot-on with service, drinks and sharing her favorites. It is cozy and casual, people meeting people. The spirits here are for the pros with knowledge of wine, beer, spirits and bubbles. We started with the wild mushroom mozzarella with balsalmic butter, parmesan and balsalmic glaze served on crunchy baguettes. It was unbelievably flavored and tasty, a great start to the night and must have! The Spanish salad with arugula, apple, fennel, almonds, manchego and a honey-sherry vinegarette was good but not on par with the other dishes. The tuna crudo with cucumber, arugula, crunchy grains, orange wedges, citrous vinegarette, fried capers and preserved lemon was light, a real palate cleanser, and refreshing. A pleasant surprise and would order again. The lamb pintxos was our final selection and a great dish to end the night on. The fork tender lamb tenderloin was served on 2 skewers with mojo verde, Spanish aoili, and pickled red onions on crisp baguette slices. Another Homerun! The menu changes frequently and the tapas allow you to try several different delectable dishes. It encourages sharing and forces you to open up and try different dishes. My pizza had one slice of jalapeno and one piece of pineapple per slice for a $20+ small pizza. The so called General Tso steak sauce was like a thimbleful smear and completely irrelevant. BBQ Ramen seasoning? Not even enough to get a taste profile of it. The trout with a green curry sauce was good but again, ummmm.... Trout has a subtle flavor. Green curry coconut sauce, and stuffed with another type of Asian something something....might as just as well better to use a neutral tasting fish like a better quality tilapia imho. Let trout taste like trout. Use a different, neutral tasting fish for these kinds of sauces and fillings. Well at least it wasn't covered with a garnish of micro greens lol. Just a little cilantro heh heh heh. I mean don't get me wrong. Both entrees were okay. But a waste of quality fish when a less costly fish would have been fine what with all those other flavors. And the foam and powder embellishments on the steak were barely noticeable. The whole menu reads like a community college cooking school graduate little bit of this little bit of that. When I get home I'm going to have fun writing the different components of all the menu items on index cards, shuffle, and see what combinations come up each time. And I love the idea of a General Tso steak sauce and want to try creating one. And using a packet of Ramen seasoning instead of Cajun seasoning sounds like a fun thing to try. I just won't do it on a fifty dollar piece of meat. If you are counting calories you skip the gross doughnut hole dessert. Dense ball of dough. Gummy. Like they used a cake doughnut recipe instead of a yeast doughnut or beignet recipe. But if not counting calories , go for it. It's fun to try the sauces, even if not that great a doughnut.
