We ate here recently with high hopes based on word of mouth reviews from friends in town. The people who work here are very friendly, and the atmosphere is good. The focaccia bread is delicious. The wait for food is agonizingly long. Over 2 hours in total. We received our food and it really wasn't great. The steak was cold and the fries were soggy. The pasta I tried was very acidic and was not what I'd consider "au poivre". There were no green peppercorns in the sauce or anywhere on the plate. The restaurant was very busy so I can attribute some of the wait and inaccuracy to that, but we waited a long time for drinks as well. I really wanted to like this place, but it just didn't cut it for us. read more

Surprisingly disappointing after buying into all the hype as seen on their facebook posts. The appetizers we ordered were the only highlight of the evening unfortunately. Setting and ambiance are nice and service was on par as well but the food just erased all that with its underwhelming performance. I ordered the beef ribs. They were overcooked and surprisingly had hardly any meat on them at all. If the taste had made up for it, it's something I could have overlooked but even the taste was not good. It tasted like someone had literally thrown them into a fire-pit with no seasoning. My brother in law ordered the ribeye. He ordered his med rare. It came out medium well. Asked for a replacement. New one came out rare when he cut into it. Sent it back to add some char to it. Came out again and was acceptable but no seasoning and very bland. We really looked forward to this place but unfortunately it did not deliver. Maybe it will get better after a few tweaks. read more

Started out with the most delicious and refreshing margarita, followed by two excellent appetizers and my all time favorite Caesar salad. Service was impeccable, server bringing everything out at just the right times. My wagyu flat iron was excellent, cooked to a perfect medium, just how I ordered it. The frites were absolutely freshly cooked, steaming hot! My guests ordered the black garlic burger, I was lucky to get a bite, and some type of brisket entree that looked amazing. I don't even know where to start, the croquets were phenomenal, of course the dry aged bone-in Ribeye was stellar, beautifully cooked and seasoned. First off, the coke was excellent. Just the right amount of ice to coke ratio but, drink it slowly because you're only going to get one. So this place is kind of a bate and switch because the menu on the website and yelp are not what the real menu is. No waygu and very limited steaks. The corn dip app was just canned corn with some olive oil and covered in feta cheese with a couple of pickled red onions and colored tortillas chips. Very bland and salty. The salad was warm and wilted like it was just sitting around for a few hours. I had the filet and fries. The filet was cooked to order with butter but the butter was lacking in taste. Fries were, well fries. My wife ordered the shrimp scampi with fettuccine. The Shrimp was dry and rubbery and the fettuccine had no sauce and the noodles were liken to a day old leftover reheated in the microwave. This place could benefit with some help from Gordon Ramsey. Cast Iron on 17th has delicious food. We were very happy with the serving sizes. Their bread is amazing, with just the right balance of crumb and crust. The atmosphere is strange and doesn't match the high-end food vibe. It feels like eating in a thrift store with mismatched knickknacks everywhere. Went there a few weeks ago on a date with my wife. The ambience was interesting with mismatch glasses and table settings. There was a bucket on the ceiling, assumably to catch a leak, which wasn't all that charming. Our server was decent, and the bread and sauce they brought out was absolutely fantastic. Our entrees (I think we got the wagyu flat iron and brisket sandwich) were decent, maybe not quite worth the price tag, but it was a fun place to try. I've been here a couple times and the food never disappoints. Tonight I had the Kurobuta Pork (they even had a small plate portion which I wish every restaurant offered!) and it was juicy, and so flavorful. Started off with the bacon wrapped dates and geez- I think these are my favorite anywhere. They are just so good! The bartender created a super yummy Mojito Mocktail for me since I wasn't in the mood for the real thing and it was great too. Our server was super knowledgeable about gluten (I have a severe intolerance to it) and what dishes I could and couldn't have. The decor is very eclectic and there's always been plenty of parking in the nice big lot any time we've gone, so 5 stars all around. My food was so good I forgot to take a photo - sorry! read more

What a delightful experience! You can tell from the exterior that you are entering an eclectic venue. I personally love random table sizes and heights, mismatched chairs, China and glasses, etc. - it adds to the table conversation. Great wine and cocktail options - I settled on the Bikini Pineapple Margarita- very tasty. Several appetizer options- we selected the bacon-wrapped dates, which were quite good. Most of the entrees come with soup or salad. My husband tried the French onion and was quite delighted. I opted for the Caesar salad and was very happy with the robust flavor and shaved Parmesan and crispy croutons. The bread seemed to be a type of fluffy, buttery focaccia cut into small wedges. Extremely good. They serve the bread with a cream/beef reduction, but we all agreed it was better without it. The entrees we tried were the Black and Blue ribeye, the Filet medallions with portobello mushrooms, the Salmon, the flat steak with brown butter, and the Candied bacon and mango burger. Being family, we shared bites and everything was cooked perfectly and beyond yummy. The side dish was succotash- who knew we all loved it! Several to-go boxes were in order. I wish we had room for dessert! The options were limited and rotate, but they always have homemade ice cream. Service was very good. Horrible! HORRIBLE! Words cannot explain the awful, hell sent restaurant that this is. We showed up with a reservation for 6 and specific requests to match someone's vegetarian restrictions, which had also been made aware in advance. Our waiter informed us of a possible wait due to another large group. Completely understandable. Time slowly ticked by, and we got more and more hungry. We ordered appetizers. The appetizers arrived with a reasonable time and weren't bad, but a tad bit overpriced. We kept on waiting. We finally get the salads that had come with the meal. Very small portions, equivalent to the clown car of the salad world, but not at all bad in taste. We made jokes here and there about leaving, as it had now been about an hour and a half with no signs, not a living breathing soil of recognition of the food wait time. Finally after 2 HOURS of STARVING, AGONIZING, DREADFUL WAITING we receive the news it will be approximately 5 more minutes. We finally prepare. Practically gleaming with our forks and knives chanting on the table.. And then 1 minute left.. And then.. 10 minutes after.. And THEN.. 15 MINUTES LATER We received the first bit of food. Anticipation grows around the table. Drool dripping from our food awaiting mouths. Fully prepared to go fully rabid on these pieces of esteemed meat. We receive it.. AND.. ITS COLD. ITS MOOING. ITS SALMONELLA-INDUCING, COMA CAUSING SLABS OF DEMON COW. We return the food immediately. It's cold and undercooked. The pre prepared vegetarian meal isn't even in sight. We decide it's time to leave. Time to give up. The food almost entirely untouched do to the inedible nature. Just for our waiter to attempt to charge us $200 IN UNTOUCHED FOOD! We were able to negotiate it to just pay for drinks and appetizers. After being prepared to leave I heard our waiter..drum roll please.. JARED trash talking on our table for not wanting to pay full price and eat our uncooked, still mooing, cold steak. So raw it can't even be counted as STEAK. I give one star, as the ability to go into the NEGATIVES isn't an option. I would've rather poached and slow cook a rat then eat the food that was presented to me. Let me first say that we have eaten at Cast Iron in the past and have had a great meal. However, four of us just went the other night and had an absolutely horrible meal. To start, we wanted to sit in the bar and have a few drinks. we were told we could sit anywhere, and when we grabbed the table by the fire, we were told it was reserved and we had to move. There was only one other person in their bar. Then we just decided to sit down at our dinner table to order our food instead. one of us ordered a cocktail and they said they were out of the fruit flavor but could make it with a different fruit flavor. When the cocktail arrived, the waiter said it was a sour drink and that's not what was ordered at all. It tasted bad so we returned it. They were very reluctant to take back the drink, but they did and we ordered just a plain martini. When we ordered dinner, all four of us wanted the pear salad which was included with our meal. We were told they didn't have any pears. So three of us decided to order the Caesar salad and one ordered the tomato and mozzarella salad instead. For our main course three of us ordered the halibut and one ordered the filet. When our salad arrived, there was literally only three bites on the plate. I would guess less than a quarter cup of lettuce. And iceberg lettuce, which was weird for a Caesar salad. The person who ordered the tomato salad got three slices of tomato and one slice mozzarella on a plate. The Caesar salad tasted good but three bites?? And the anchovies were brought out after we had already finished. Dinner arrived, and the halibut was old tasting and had a hard dry crust on it like it was freezer burnt. It was obviously also cooked in a microwave oven or something as it was plain like it was boiled or something with no seasoning and just sitting on a small pool of creamed peas. It was supposed to have gnocchi, but we all struggled to even find any. It was also served on a very small plate so we wondered if we had gotten a small plate meal instead of the regular entrée. One of us ordered a glass of white wine to go with the dinner and was served the white wine after the meal was over. The steak was okay... nothing special. We decided not to order dessert based on what we had all experienced thus far. I have tried to reach the manager for three days to discuss our meal. I have left messages and have never had any returned. I have also sent email. In summary, our meal was $300 and we had poor service, and food that was subpar. We are extremely disappointed and will not be returning nor will our friends who were from out of town visiting (we wanted to take them out for a celebration meal...). read more

No sure what has happened? Last year the food and atmosphere was great, but last Tuesday we had a very disappointing experience. The halibut was old and had a freeze burn surface. We've eaten at Cast Iron many times. For this evening, we had made reservations, and after waiting two and a half hours, our food was slowly delivered over fifteen minutes. No, you read that right, two and a half hours of waiting. The food, once delivered, was cold and undercooked. I cautiously touched my filet with my finger, which was room temperature externally and even colder internally. Four steaks were undercooked and cold, and a burger was an unhealthy pink in the center. One order never arrived. This review is one hundred percent true, no exaggerations. I hope the owner reads it and learns that you cannot treat customers this way. The staff, while "apologetic", offered us a fifty percent discount for our inedible food. Wow! One of my party overheard this staff complaining how we didn't want to consume overpriced uncooked food. We literally paid for TWO appetizers and standard beverages, to the tune of 100 dollars. The owner should be ashamed of allowing patrons to be treated this way. My party was accommodating and patient during the two and a half hours. We enjoyed some fine conversations. This consideration was taken advantage of and we will not return. I've recommended this restaurant to many people - but with the turn of events, I'll be headed to any other restaurant instead. My wife's birthday celebration was turned into a bad experience that will not be forgotten. Never dining here again. read more

My wife and I went here for our anniversary and we ordered the fries, a New York strip with bacon jam and we had a side salad. The fries were very good but the main course was bland, the outside of the steak was moist instead of crispy and I was hoping for some sweet and salty since I ordered the new York strip with the bacon jam but it seemed like all the flavor was in the bacon jam and the bacon was overpowered by everything else in the jam so there was almost no saltiness to it. Upon entry the establishment is very unique and not done in poor taste. A mix of classical French music playing between splashes of Louis Armstrong gives a very comfortable feeling. There seems to be a steady buzz of patrons enjoying their meals. I was seated promptly by a friendly waiter. You'll immediately notice that your surroundings are a matching game that will never be won. You could hold the world championship of I-Spy from any table. The chairs, the tables, the glasses and salt shakers. Nothing is uniform or expected. I did hear that this establishment will cut your tie off if you're bland enough to wear one. So in preparation I am wearing my Sunday best. I've been seated for 5 minutes and though I have placed my order (Truffled Parmesan Steak Fries and the house recommendation for my entrée), my hideous orange tie remains in tact. I was asked how I like my steak after being seated for 9 minutes. At 18 minutes these fantastic fries landed in front of me. They are spicy and salty with just a hint of truffle. Wide flakes of parmesan add a nice taste. The flavor is top notch, but the texture needs help. A French Fry should, from outside to inside go from crispy to fluffy. These go from soft on the outside to firm in the inside. The fry sauce is fantastic. A nice enough salad was next at the 28 minute mark. I did have to ask for silverware as there was non at the table. The dressing was decent but had a slightly...off flavor. Not as in it had gone bad, but that there was an ingredient that did not belong. I could also do without the full rings of red onion on the top. I don't especially love raw red onion, thought that is my opinion. I believe others would agree it is difficult to eat a 2 1/2" circular slice. A 50oz Tomahawk Steak rocked my table at the 64 minute mark. Which in my opinion is a bold choice for a single diner. I love steak as much as the next red blooded American, and I'm not opposed to leftovers. But 50 ounces of prime beef has no chance of being consumed in one sitting by a sane person out for dinner. So here I sit, the lone masochist by the door quietly running this beef marathon. The steak has a great crust, which is very refreshing on a cut from a local restaurant. It is seasoned well and cooked exactly as asked. The steak came with a side of vegetable medley. It seems to be seasoned, roasted potatoes with herbs, mushrooms, shallots and tomato. Though I do not drink alcohol, they seemed to have a well stocked bar with a knowledgeable bartender. I did pass on dessert after failing to finish the marathon. Overall I had a nice experience at Cast Iron on 17th. The staff was attentive and respectful. The food was well made and when regarding the quantity, prepared in a timely manner. I recommend stopping by when you have the chance. My tie did survive the night, but it will be back for a second try. Like a rookie, I left a good 25 ounces of tomahawk steak in a to go box on my table. Oh well. read more

To start... SUPER happy that this proprietor opened this magical place. See my review of Abracadabra (same person) to understand why. We had a bit of a difficult time getting a reservation but sat at the bar instead - had the best time ever. Great food and friends go together so well. So it is the food that you want to know about. First round appetizers were... perfect. I cannot say enough good things about the bacon wrapped dates. What a twist. The salads were really great as well. We all had a variety. Mine was the serrano ranch salad. From now on, I am just going to skip the greens, homemade croutons, carmel roasted walnuts and just drink the dressing. So frickin delicious. French onion soup just danced off my tongue. We all ordered steaks and I had the Osso buco. The prime rib, black and blue ribeye, the flank Wagyu, the filet was perfectly cooked and seasoned and priced perfectly for the portions. I will get the Kurobuta ribeye is my choice next time because while the osso buco was seasoned perfectly- better than perfect... it was classic and timeless. However... I was left a bit disappointed. The meat was not tender. It was soft but not fall off the bone and velvety. I hope they let it slow cook another 2 hours or use an instant pot. Because it wasn't perfect the price point was way too high ($50). Also, try something new with the cake frosting. In my opinion, it was WAY to sweet. Toothache sweet. Please try something different. Desserts should be the beautiful subtle ending to a perfect night, leaving you totally satisfied yet yearning for one more bite. This stopped me cold after the first bite. Thank God I had coffee to wash it down. In short, I cannot wait to return. There are at least 5 other dishes I am looking forward to eating. More to follow. Come and eat this delicious food. Wonderful restaurant. I don't know why the prior restaurant there toadies, but trust me, the new team with Cast Iron is 1,000% better. The lamb ossobuco was the best I have had in years, and the steaks our party had were excellent. Cooked to precise requested doneness. Great wine list and well made and presented cocktails. Was busy, nice to see. Might be the current top restaurant in the area. BTW, as for the 1-star over COVID below, the staff were wearing masks, and I felt the table separation was more than 6 feet. Table height varies, both fun, whimsical and maybe safer. Personally, I find it hard to eat with a mask on, but I'm trying someday to make it work! read more

Very disappointing experience. We waited 40 minutes for our server to greet us. His excuse was he thought we were waiting for another person. We ordered a New York Strip steak and a ribeye. The first wine we ordered was truly awful. We had them return it to the bottle and took it home for cooking (not sure I'll use it). Our second wine choice was slightly better but not much. I would have expected a discount on the wine since it was clearly subpar. The NY strip was a good cut of meat spoiled by a mediocre preparation. Very little flavor. To cap it off, they served Brussels sprouts without warning and in dim light. I thought I was eating mushrooms until the first bite caught me by surprise. I can't imagine why any restaurant would serve a strong flavored veggie like this without giving the customer a choice. If this was voted the best new restaurant in 2020, I think I can skip trying all the others. It's back to Sandpiper for me! read more

i had a wonderful black garlic hamburger tonight, and it's one of the best burgers I've ever had. It was so flavorful I didn't need the normal fixins I like on a burger. i just enjoyed the taste of the meat and the bun. I also had their parmesan fries, and I could become addicted to them. The server was very friendly and professional, and I enjoyed listening to some big band music and looking at what they had in their kiosk. 4.5 stars for the food and service. 0.5 stars for the manager (owner?) who was nice enough to let me have the little cat salt shaker when we couldn't find the matching pepper shaker.
