My husband and I decided to get some dinner at Castanea Sicilian Cafe. It's a small cafe that is well lit with bright colors and a little bit of seating inside and outside. We walked in and checked out the menu that's posted on the wall. We were then greeted by one of the owners working behind the counter. He told us to let him know if we had any questions about the menu. After finding a place to sit we eventually decided what we wanted. The owner came over and took our order. He then proceeded to offer us bottled still water and bottled sparkling water on him. So we weren't charged for that which was very kind. We ordered Focaccia Sticks, Prosciutto Crudo e Parmigiano Pinsa and a Margherita Pinsa with added Prosciutto. The Focaccia Sticks were hot and airy. They were addictive. The Prosciutto Crudo e Parmigiano Pinsa had Arugula, Prosciutto, Different Cheeses, Cherry Tomatoes, and Sun Dried Tomatoes. I enjoyed the combination of ingredients and liked that you could taste the freshness of the ingredients. It made for a tasty pinsa. The Margherita Pinsa with added Prosciutto was just as delicious. Because we went to eat late and it was before closing the owner also offered us a free pastry to go. We kindly accepted and shared it at our hotel later that night. It was very good. Overall the service was great with a very friendly owner who checked in on us through out our meal. The food was fresh and delicious which provided a very tasty dinner. read more

Desperately seeking sfogliatelle... I wanted to come here because sfogliatelle is a very hard to find Italian pastry in the U.S. I was introduced to it on my trip to Naples where this pastry was perfected. I saw Vito K's raving review here and thought I must try it out. We purchased several bakery items -- cannoli, cornetti (Italian's version of croissant), and ofc the sfogliatelle. The sfogliatelle was on the small side but absolutely perfect. It had the right balance of highly crunchy outside layers with a moist inside. Deliziosa! On the other hand, the cornetto was very large and nicely layered inside each bite. I found the cannolo to be a little dry with the outside shell (I have yet to find a shell in LA that I truly like) but overall it was pretty solid compared to other cannoli around LA. I def need to come back to try the pinsa, as there is a whole pinsa menu here. This is Roman-style pizza that I fell in love with when I was in Italy. read more

OBSESSED. Nando is a an absolute dream to work with on catering, you can not find a more considerate or thoughtful food vendor. I catered a small group of what ended up being 22 people people the other day and called Castanea because of the reviews but was deterred by the "Surprise me" option. The owner reassured me by phone of what would be provided and let me tell you that my guests were incredibly delighted. The offerings were scrumptious and excitingly unique. I had a pistachio croissant that had pistachio cream oozing out of all corners, and it was perfectly crispy (how do you do that?!) There were goodies I could not even imagine on the table and a great array of iced drinks. The pizzas looked incredible, but being a nice hostess (ha), I let my guests have at them and there were ooos and ahhs at all corners of the table. Everything was carefully labeled and filled with the most divine yummy options. I think the 6 extra folks who joined us simply came for the treats as they heard whimpers of food joy through the halls. I will definitely be ordering from this company again, they are literally a dream to work with. I highly recommend eating there, ordering catering from there and enjoying the best of Sicily in the States! I am looking forward to visiting again also, like, REALLY looking forward to it! Man of man, where do I start?! This place is phenomenal!!! It all started when my wife and baby were taking a walk in the neighborhood, and she sent me a picture of their storefront knowing how much I love and have a hard time finding Italian food places here in LA. Well technically, Italian food places that I like lol Being an Italian American, born and raised in New York City, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to Italian foods and pastries in LA. So when my family and I came in not too long ago to give them a try, my guard was up lol But our first impression blew me away! The customer service was phenomenal. The young ladies behind the counter was so friendly and patient as my wife and I were deciding on what to get while dealing with our baby running around the store. And then we met the wonderful, generous and sweet owner, Nando. Who on his way out, took the time to introduce himself and chat with my family and I. We instantly connected on being Italian and now in the Los Angeles area. Since then, my family and I have been inside a handful of times ordering and enjoying a handful of mini items. Their Italian coffee is delicious, so much so that I've even started to purchase their espresso for me to enjoy at home. And their cannoli, is a real authentic cannoli. Something I have missed dearly since I've been here in Los Angeles. Even when I have found places that also have real authentic cannolis, there's just something about this that is delicious. It is freshly made and filled to order. How it should be! Although the pastries are fantastic. But honestly speaking, because I'm always honest in my reviews. Some of their pastries are not for everyone. They have pastries that are on the sweeter end, if you are into those and pastries that aren't so much. Including another childhood lifelong favorite Italian pastry of mine called, sfogliatella. I'm not ashamed to admit, the first time I been to this, tears came to my eyes lol This place to me is special, it reminds me of home and my family in so many ways. I can go on and on about how delicious everything is and just how overall fantastic the vibe and energy is when you walk in those doors. I came here to have lemon gelato in a lemon like the ones in Rome but I found out that they are sold prepackaged, already in a lemon, and for 12 dollars! Needless to say, I did not buy it but instead I had a focaccia sandwich that was okay at best. The bread was extremely mediocre but the cheese in it was fresh enough I guess. Happened to be walking by the Beverly Hills location yesterday and stopped for a classic cannolo. Cannolis are my favorite dessert. I've eaten them all of the world including in Sicily (Catania and Siracusa) where the dessert originates. Overall, Castanea's Sicilian Café made a good version. The ricotta was piped in only after ordering it. The shell remained crunchy and crispy. That said, it was overly sweet. It seems to me that they added additional sugar to the filling. Ricotta is naturally sweet and does not require additional sugar. It is a dessert that emphasizes the crunchy / creamy textures with a mild sweetness. Recommend they reduce their sugar usage. read more
