After spending time in Mt. Hood, our family of four was weary and hungry from traveling all day. I had my eyes set on Castaways since it was a short drive from picturesque Cannon Beach. The pictures and reviews naturally made me bookmark the restaurant in anticipation. About a week prior to our visit, I placed a reservation and looking back, I'm glad we did this. Upon arriving at 6:30, I gave them my name and we were immediately seated by our hostess. As the dinner crowd began to trickle in, I noticed the restaurant was getting close to capacity. A sure sign this place was popular with not only the tourists, but the locals as well. Moments later, our server arrived and greeted us. She asked if we would like anything to drink and my husband and I decided to get a cocktail. He ordered a Zombie and I got the Blood Orange Margarita. Both were excellent, large, and made well. My only regret was not getting a second drink! Our server did a good job guiding us through the menu and highlighting the specials for the evening. We went with one of her suggestions and ordered the scallop appetizer. It was sublime! The perfectly seared scallop paired well with the citrus relish. It was so delicate, and the colorful presentation was spot on! Our main dishes for the evening were Mary's Free Range Chicken Breast and the Seafood Linguine. Aesthetically, the chicken had a nice brown color and the garnishments were pleasing. The chicken gravy was delightful; however, the chicken itself was a tad salty. Despite this issue, I enjoyed the cream cheese mashed potatoes and veggie side dishes. My husband had the better of our two entrees. The linguine was an ample portion with tender pasta. The rich, red pepper lobster cream sauce gave this entrée a nice spicy kick while the grated Grana Padano cheese atop the pasta provided an extra level of complexity. The dish had plenty of Maine lobster meat and jumbo prawns which was a big plus. I tried a few bites simply because I couldn't have just one. We thoroughly enjoyed this meal and highly recommend ordering this entree. The service overall was very good. Our server was courteous and the chef even made the rounds, visiting each table to make sure everything was satisfactory. We left very happy. Pricing was moderately expensive with dishes averaging around ($23-30+). Overall, dress code leans more toward smart casual but jeans and shorts are accepted. We didn't see a lot of families with young children and the crowd consists of a slightly older set (40's-50s). Ok, this is a sticky situation. I was on the verge of giving this restaurant four stars. Due to the ridiculous amount of wait time. I rounded it up to a five star cuz of several factors. First of, we came at 6:20pm on a Saturday. The restaurant opens at 5pm, and it was already packed with people eating and drinking at the bar. The hostess told me that dinner for two adults and a baby will be around 8:15pm. Say whoa?! Then she said they don't have high chairs for the little one. What?! You know they are serious with their food when they don't expect children to dine here. I still put my name down, whatever, food must be good. They only take reservation for party of four or more. What the heck! So we went back to the hotel and watch the Huskies game. Came back to the restaurant at 8 on the dot, found street parking. Then my phone rang, and it was them calling because there was an opening for us! I love their prompt service! That's a plus in my book. They have very limited menu, which is good! That means they put time and effort in every dish they have for the night. I ordered the cajun jambalaya, it came with the usual you'd find in a jambalaya, but the basmati rice was the star of the show. Never knew basmati rice paired up so nice with jambalaya! Jambalaya: 5/5 We got 4/4 spicy and it was SPICY! Same level of spicy as a really spicy Serrano. So delicious and full of flavor. Smoky sauce underneath a bed of rice. Juicy pieces of shrimp and sausages. Loved it. Jerk chicken: 5/5 Wow. Talk about a blast of flavor. Everything from the chicken to the sauce to the co salsa(?) on the side was DELICIOUS! Again, packed full of flavor. Nice balance of sweet, savory and acid. Pork belly and polenta appetizer: 4.5/5 Would get this again for the polenta itself. The pork belly is always good but man that polenta. Such delicious corn flavor, nice and soft inside and oh so crispy outside. Amazing! Everything here was so delicious and so well put together. We lucked out getting a reservation due to a last minute cancellation the day of our arrival. The hostess/bartender/owner was accommodating and friendly. First off this restaurant is super cute, bright, and welcoming. They even knew who we were without asking for our name! There was only two working the floor which I think might have been a husband and wife team? They kept moving the whole time. He took our food orders, she took our drink orders and then went behind the bar to make them. They both checked on us frequently and even took the time to chat for a minute even though the restaurant was busy. The drinks were very good! The Mai Tai is made with a strawberry puree which makes it unique. And the pineapple chili margarita was refreshing and not too sweet. The food was fresh, well plated, and delicious. I had the filet which was cooked perfectly and so tender. My husband had the jambalaya which had blueberries that kind of threw us off, but the flavor worked. The Texas egg rolls are as if a cream cheese wonton and a jalapeño popper had a baby. We craved it for days after. I definitely recommend eating here while visiting Cannon Beach. Do not miss this culinary treasure on your next trip to Cannon Beach. When I first discovered them, the kitchen had closed for the evening, but I was able to imbibe in COR Cellars' Momentum, a blend of Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc that I had discovered earlier in the day when exploring the Columbia Gorge. On my return, I almost missed out again on tasting their food options, but a miraculous cancellation meant that I could try their tasty, spicy, New Orleans- and Caribbean-influenced cuisine. Jerk chicken, served with perfectly-spiced rice and vegetables, was my choice for the evening. It did not even remotely disappoint! The food might be good but when we went the owner/manager. Gentlemen who was behind the register was crazy rude. First we tried to do a takeout because that's what their voicemail says they do as of today. He was so annoyed we even asked. Like we were stupid. Then we got our family and sat down. I went to order while my husband sat with my small child. The same guy came out and rudely kicked him out for sitting before ordering. He walked back up and asked me what I wanted. I was confused as to what happened... when I paused he rudely snapped at me to order. In the time I was standing in line of 4 people. 3 people did what we did and he didn't say anything. This guy clearly had an issue with our family. I know Covid is causing tension to be high but he could try and show a little kindness. He acted like he hated his job and hated people. The reviews, both good and bad, prepared me very well for our dinner at Castaways. So let me pass along the favor by consolidating some key points. The owners, one is the bartender and runs the front of the house and the other is chef, have put together a lively menu of tropical food and drink. The space is small and festive. It was busy when we arrived on a Friday night and the only two tops available were around the corner by the kitchen. As soon as possible, I changed our location to grab two seats at the bar and it made a world of difference. You never want to be that back table by the kitchen (in any restaurant), although they did put a second TV back there in an attempt to provide a little entertainment and distract from the kitchen noise. But, the main restaurant, and in particular the bar, are really the place to be. The owners and staff were working flat out and hustling. So, yes, there were waits for that first drink to arrive and taking our food order, but it was clear they were dancing just as fast as they can. I can understand those delays. The ones that kill me are when a place is dead and you have to wait. We worked our way through the cocktail menu... margarita, dark & stormy, whiskey sour and then it all becomes a bit blurry. Everything was great, especially all the fruit juices for the cocktails that were squeezed in front of our eyes. We just chatted with the bartender for guidance on our next round. Rather than be cloyingly sweet, which can easily happen with tropical drinks, many of their choices have something to add a little bite or complexity. The food was equally good. Our favorite was probably the East meets West appetizer. Two jerk chicken skewers and two Asian-style chicken satay skewers. Four dipping sauces to compliment each style (mango salsa and jerk sauce, plus sweet-and-sour and peanut). For our main courses, we had the coconut curry shrimp (with large chunks of mango) and the jambalaya with the addition of prawns. The entrees were served on large oval platters rather than plates. We could have pretty easily split one of those entrees, but managed to pretty much belong to the clean plate club by the end of our meal. The thing that really sealed the deal is that I can't think of anything like this in the area. I get a similar feeling of 'this is something special' at the Irish Table on the other side of town. There is so much that falls in the uninspiring zone on this part of the coast, that Castaways felt like discovering a treasure. They are about to close for a month sabbatical, but will reopen around New Years. At the pace they were working, I can understand the need to rest and recharge. I don't have a single negative thing to say about this restaurant. The people, the food, the environment...all of it was perfect. A very home-y yet casual spot with such lovely, happy people running it. The chef even came out to talk to each table and check in about the food which was very considerate. At one point, the kitchen realized they forgot the cheese that goes with the pasta we ordered, and the chef ran out with a bowl of it about halfway through our meal and apologized. We were so engrossed in our food already that honestly, we completely forgot about cheese being a part of the dish. It was already 5stars amazing as is! The gesture just showed how attentive they are with their customers and how much they care about the quality of their food. We both got entrees off the Specials menu: I got the ribeye and my boyfriend got a cajun pasta. Ribeye cooked to medium rare juicy perfection with a beautiful glaze accompanied by perfectly sautéed veggies and smooth, buttery mashed potatoes. Pasta had a flavorful spicy kick (we got 2 stars), and it was filled with perfectly cooked sausage and other things that I can't remember because I am terrible at remembering the menu. I was also a little preoccupied with scarfing down my ribeye. The portions are huge, so you might be lucky and have some leftovers for the next day. Anyways, it seems like no matter what you order at Castaways, it will be a hit. It's a small restaurant, so a reservation is recommended. I went on a Sunday evening right at opening without a reservation, and we were the first customers. A 5pm dinner is actually early for us, so I wasn't surprised that the restaurant wasn't filled until maybe 5:30/6pm. At first we were not sure we had arrived as we didn't see the signage right away. On second look we see that we had arrived. A tiny hole in the wall type of restaurant. Mu husband was raised on southern cooking and I had never tried it before. We were both looking forward to the experience. We both ordered the Etouffee and added the prawns to the dish as well. I ordered a hard cider the raspberry peach made by Bauman's Century Farm Cider Co it was very good! My husband ordered an ice tea which he was happy to find was a fresh brewed one. Those are hard to find now days as most have shifted to a fountain drink style of ice tea. Not here though! The Etouffee was wonderful. The flavors exploded on my tongue The spices melded together without overpowering each other and the shrimp were tender and flavorful. The rice was so light and fluffy the grains practically sprinkled one at a time off of each other. I have never seen nor tasted such perfect rice. In fact I had to ask the staff what kind it is and how the chef made it. Our waitress was attentive and knowledgeable AND the chef came out of the kitchen and spoke with the customers including ourselves. Meh. WAY over- rated. The potatoes are clearly from a Betty Crocker pkg. Not happy with the lack of loyalty to locals who frequent even in the very slow winter months. Some things are good served along side packaged fake potatoes and frozen zucchini's. Prices are extremely high considering this. Food has gone downhill. They used to make a very decent seafood chowder. We would come in order a couple of bowls along with an appetizer and alcohol. The waiter tells us that "we don't Make any money off the soup so the chef hates when people order it" They started giving us attitude when we'd come in. Mind you we were still dropping $70/80 without a main course. And coming a couple times a month. This is a small restaurant. Only 7 or 8 tables. They are only open in the evening Wednesday through Saturday and you must make a reservation. The menu was eclectic but focused on Caribbean and Cajun. Service was excellent and the cocktails were light and pleasant, not overly flavored to hide the lack of alcohol. Our food was very good. I had the salmon, my husband had jambalaya. This was our first time at Castaway's. We were here for weekend celebration of our anniversary. Loved the feel of the restaurant. Menu was great. I had the blood Orange Margarita that was excellent. We shared the Tiki salad that was also excellent and sufficient for the two of us to share. My husband had the seafood pasta which was excellent. The sauce was exceptional! I had the filet mignon cooked to perfection. We would definitely recommend and would come back when we return to Cannon Beach. read more

A year later, we visit the infamous Castaways! It was just as good as the first time we went here. It's easily my favorite restaurant in Cannon Beach. The style of the food is just something I don't eat very often, so when I eat it it's like heaven. This time I ordered the Jambalya which had sausage, peppers, blueberries, chicken, and I added jumbo prawns for an extra $7. The amount of flavors in the dish was astounding, and the portion was generous so you should feel full afterwards! The menu here shifts around here and there offering different specials on a certain basis. I'd like to give a shoutout to our server "Colin." He's a really friendly guy who was accommodating and made our dining experience pleasurable. Great service especially during COVID. We were able to call in our order, pay and they offered curbside pickup! Quickest curbside we have experienced to date. Ordered the Jambalaya with Jumbo Prawns, 2* spice and boy were the jumbo prawns JUMBO! Delicious, spice was enough to feel the heat even after the bite, but not overpowering. Also had the seafood linguine which had tons of crab claws, prawns and veggies. The two dishes were enough to share between 2 adults and 2 kids we with some leftovers, generous generous serving size for the price. The chef would come out several times to chat with us and make sure everything okay. It was a nice personal touch. Also, the food was AMAZING. A few years back I wrote a scathing review for Castaways based on treatment of our party of ten. We had been told we didn't need a reservation but when we showed up we were asked to leave because we didn't have a reservation ... Major conundrum ~ Over the past few years my girlfriends and I have been back to Castaways in both the old and new locations with reservations in hand.
