View from the outside - it's on your right side when walking down from the Naval Academy
    Mark N.

Annapolis houses the Naval Academy, but a visit to Annapolis would not be complete without a stop to Castlebay Irish Pub. Visited with a bunch of guys after touring the Naval Academy campus...a short walk from the campus, it's a great Irish pub with a great ambiance and selection of Irish beer on tap (Guinness, Harp, Smithwick, Kilkenny) as well as the usual American brand. In addition, it houses a great selection of whiskeys: Irish (Bushmills, Jamesons, Red Breast, etc. - the different varieties), bourbons (to include Pappy's, Blanton), scotch (MacAllans), etc. The dining experience pairs well with the beer and whiskeys. The meat for the reuben sandwich and traditional corned beef are selected and prepared in a traditional manner making it delicious. If you are lucky, you will meet the owner of the establishment, who will regale you with stories about past Academy graduates who would return to the pub after graduation or even about his playing in a rock & roll band. Great food, beer, whiskey, atmosphere, and if lucky, great stories and an experience. When visiting the Naval Academy, take a yonder down the street, you won't regret the visit.

Great local Irish pub that made us feel welcomed. Nikki was our bartender and treated us like we were friends. The burger was delicious! Caramelized onions made just right by Kenny the cook! Thank you for the exceptional experience!! See you next time

Ordered the fish and chips. In an area of fresh fish, this dish was underwhelming. The 'chips' were wedge potatoes which were each a quarter of a russet potato so felt more like eating a baked potato than fries.

    Great pint!

Order was a baked brie, French onion soup and beef stew. Also a black and tan. The beer was perfectly poured and as expected. The baked brie was about 1/4 wheel served with bread, honey and apples. It was warmed and tasted pretty good. French onion soup was very generic buy not bad. You're probably wondering why this got a 2 star.... the beef stew was extremely lacking. Literally, 5 small pieces of beef, 5 tiny potatoes, 1 tiny carrot and 1 tiny piece of celery in a thin gravy. It was supposed to be (and was priced as) a meal, but it scored about 10% as a soup. I wouldn't have served this to my mother-in-law.

It was ight good ambiance and pretty lowkey but the food was pretty meh. Nothing really special to write home about and I couldn't tell why the Irish Burger was Irish

Huge food and service disappointment tonight for this otherwise great beer-garden venue…read more Live music and good company (not included) helped to salvage a mediocre (At Best) Friday evening at Reynolds Tavern. Our group ordered: 1) tomato-watermelon salads; 2) mussels; 3) steak frites; and Cobb salad. Unfortunately, the meal did not live up to prior experiences. Wait staff was confused and stretched (far from the authentic, trained group we've previously known) and the food was off - Mussels over cooked, fatty Steak Frites. Hope management can get it together, otherwise this great evening ambiance will fall off our "Go To" list. HITS: the live music was still a highlight.

This was advertised as a COBB salad with shrimp (2), scallops (2), lump crab meat. The musty, grainy, white rice-like substance was their version of lump crab. (The BIG white stuff was feta.) We complained and were haughtily informed by management (and their apparently not-so-knowledgable chef) that this was indeed lump crab because it was labeled that way from the vendor. All we can say is...Was it preshredded somehow? Frankly, somebody is being ripped off. We Annapolitans would be happy to school you in the difference in actual size and quality of good crabmeat. Selling fishy-tasting crap as CRAB to unsuspecting tourists should be a crime. Shame! We are CRABTOWN! In addition, your cavalier treatment is making us rethink future visits. First, I will say that the staff was SUPER welcoming and friendly because I saw nothing but smiles. The staff even offered to open, not one but two, umbrellas for my dog and me (even though the dog didn't "use" the umbrella). I never really had to wait for wait for anything because the staff made sure to check on me...maybe it was because of my handsome doggie. ;) The restaurant has a HUGE menu (I stopped counting after menu item #20), which can be a good or bad thing depending on whom you ask. Some may say a huge menu is great because customers will have a variety of various items. Other may say a huge menu is concerning because the restaurant may not excel at preparing any dish. In addition to the huge food menu, the restaurant has a HUGE cocktail menu filled with multiple varieties of Crushes (BTW, the Orange Crush is Maryland's official cocktail). From my POV, there is NOTHING wrong with a restaurant having an extensive cocktail menu. ;) For my dining pleasure, I went with a bowl of She Crab soup and an oyster po'boy. I thought both dishes were fine for an easy breezy lunch. I was a bit surprised that the She Crab soup was not cream-based, but that's my fault for not reading the menu's description of this dish. From my limited knowledge of the area, Middleton Tavern is a bit of a tourist spot, so I thought the prices were fine in that context. However, nothing seemed super overprice considering the portion sizes.

Adam behind the bar slinging John Dalys for $6.75 like Little Bill forgot to outlaw liquor in Big Whiskey. Then dinner rode into town. Chicken Cordon Bleu: 4.5/5. Moist as hell, ham and cheese doing exactly what God and France intended. Only crime? Needed more sauce. Not enough to hang the cook, but enough to knock half a star off the bounty. Then came the risotto. I believe it was forged somewhere beneath the earth's crust. One million degrees. Molten fucking steel. I tried to approach it. It threatened my family. No rating. By the time that thing reaches an edible temperature, Clint Eastwood will be smiling in a movie. But those slow-cooked green beans? Jesus. Sweet onions, what tasted like some ham-hock sorcery, cooked down until everything knew everybody else's name. I hit them with a dash of Tabasco and suddenly we weren't eating a side anymore. We were settling a score. Top-five green beans I've ever eaten. And understand something: I come from the South. Green beans aren't vegetables down there. They're a competitive sport. I ordered a second damn bowl. Adam kept the John Dalys coming, the happy-hour price stayed ridiculous, and when I asked his favorite movie? Unforgiven. Well, Adam... "Deserve's got nothing to do with it." Except tonight it does. Those green beans deserve five stars, a second order, and their own goddamn horse. Fork around and find out, Naptown.

This time, in April 2025, we arrived around 7pm, and found parking in a garage about a block away, though with better timing we might have parked right out front on West St. This was intentionally a little early for their 8pm live show, and we found a table in the front window, with fun people-watching, and walls lined with a gallery of local artists' works. One of the regulars suggested their generous creative 49 West Salad of fresh greens, cucumbers, tomato, and red onion, with blueberries, apples, almonds, and gorgonzola cheese! An exciting flavor experience! They also, steered us right on 49's Reuben sandwich, with traditional house-made tender juicy corned-beef and melted swiss, with house-made Russian sauce on soft marble rye, with the sauerkraut substituted at my request by house-made creamy cole-slaw. A rich delicious messy sandwich! And well-made drinks: a refreshing lemony minty fizzy Mizuwari with Baraky Japanese whiskey, and their Old Fashion 49 which includes some orange-y Grand Marnier. Both were creative strong and flavorsome takes on classics. Of course they also have a broad ranging menu, especially after 5pm. When the back room opened, we sipped our drinks (and got refills :-) while swaying to one of our favorite musicians, Tom Mitchell, playing this evening with Jim Stephanson as the talented and versatile Blue Rhythm Boys: Jazz, Western Swing, Blues and more, for a $15 cover. It was fun to hear them riff off classics and off of each other, mixing in stories and reminiscences, and this evening sweetly dedicating some to a friend's 75th (more or less) birthday.
