I have been wanting to visit Castro's for some time now since a friend recommended them. We went for an early morning breakfast and found parking easily at the Post Office on Saratoga just across the street from the restaurant. We secured a table outside and ordered the 3 Leches French toast and Buen Dia plates and a latte. The food was scrumptious! Every bite was so flavorful but not overwhelming. The French toast was just sweet enough and the buen dia sandwich had a nice, savory garlicky cream flavor to it. We loved everything! The latte was also delightful. I also enjoyed the many different fruits that accompanied each dish. You don't normally get longan or rambutan at restaurants. I highly recommend this spot. Enjoy! read more

Who would have thought there would be great Cuban food in Honolulu- leave your hotel and have breakfast here. The cubanito coffee is to die for, as is the masa in the tamal. Consider splitting an order as the French toast and croque señorita are both huge. read more

Amazingly secluded and hidden nook and cranny. I came in for breakfast, and the meal that I had was fantastic. The fruit was ridiculously crisp, and the French toast was out of this world. I've never had such a strong desire for a Cubano as I do when I get one from Castro's in Waikiki. I hadn't looked up this spot before my husband took us there for breakfast. When the coffees arrived with flowers in them, and then the food (immaculately arranged) I was in awe! So beautiful and everything was so delicious. I got the crab and shrimp toast - I love a meal I get to put together and it was the board of my dreams. They really go out of their way to source local foods, give a gorgeous presentation and combine flavors in ways that make your palate leap for joy. I wasnt expecting much ordering food that wouldnt be as fresh as sittung at a restaurant, just wantrs to try somwthing new but oh man. So frickin good. Food is really nice. The only place in Honolulu (and I ate out at 10 different restaurants/cafe) that serves exotic fruit such as mangosteen and longan. Like a lot of people, we checked in the popular standard breakfast chain a couple doors down from Castro's. There was a little crowd outside staring at their phones and the wait time was about 75 minutes. So we decided to give this little Cuban joint a try. That was a very good choice! I had the Buen Dia sandwich which was an egg and tasty white cheddar with a creme fraiche dill sauce on a lightly toasted brioche roll. My wife had avocado toast that was not only delicious, but also a colorful work of culinary art. Just look at some of the photos with other reviews here. We sat outside at a little sidewalk table and had our food in about 10-12 minutes after we arrived. We enjoyed this outstanding meal while other unfortunate people waited on the sidewalk 2 doors down for well over an hour for a chance to order from a menu that more closely resembles your local truck stop - except for the prices lol. read more

Today, my family and I woke up hungry after a long of swimming in the beach yesterday and decided to visit the local restaurants to enjoy a good breakfast. It happened that we ended up in the Castro's Cafe with the Latin flavor and cuisine. The Chef Castro and wife and the entire crew were AMAZING and COURTEOUS! I highly recommend the Castro's Cafe if you are visiting Waikiki. I really wanted to like Castros, but there are some serious issues I've experienced and until they are fixed I can't recommend this restaurant. First let me say, I love Cuban food. I was so so excited to find out Castros opened, after the island's only other Cuban restaurant closed years ago. On my first visit I noticed something peculiar right away. Their menu has absolutely no prices on it! This is a major problem for me. For one, I'm not going to just blindly order something I have no idea how much I have to pay until it's too late and you get the bill. This forces you into a position where you have to ask the staff how much every item is, including the drinks. So freaking annoying, and a waste of time, likely leading to longer lines and wait times. I'm sure this drives the staff bonkers as well. They claim the reason for this is they have to adjust for market value. This is complete B.S. in my opinion. They aren't selling anything that would have dramatic price fluctuations like seafood. It would be fine if they had some items that they want to list as "based on market value" for the price, but they should at least have prices for the majority of their menu (including coffee). If anything, they could put up a digital menu and update it daily. At least people could see the prices and wouldn't have to ask. Next, they barely ever answer the phone. If you're lucky they'll pick up, but don't count on it. Staff are not welcoming or nice! You're lucky if they acknowledge you. Enough said. On my second visit, they gave me the wrong order for takeout. When I called, they didn't even offer to compensate me for the mistake. Instead, I had to ask them if they would throw in an extra side dish for me to have to make the return trip to Waikiki and pay for parking again. Next, their prices are pretty expensive. For example, a Cubano with no sides will run you $16. I will admit the sandwich tasted good at least. I don't want to completely write off Castro's, but until they fix the issues I outlined, I cannot recommend this restaurant. Hopefully, they will address my concerns as I'm sure it's affecting other customers as well. read more
