It's difficult to know exactly what I was thinking when I awarded Castro Tarts only 3 stars in my earlier (2016) review. Despite the presence of that "people love us on yelp" sticker and Jane Wiedlin (of Go Go's fame) declaring it a favorite, I likely felt I'd tried too little of the menu to rate it more highly. Now, all these years later I'm here to make up for that oversight. 22 yelp check-ins should be adequate evidence that I really like this casual, welcoming cafe. Every time I come, I stare at everything being delivered to other tables, eyeball that big menu with its still very reasonable prices, and decide I want the fresh Shrimp Spring Rolls which have never once failed to delight. For their consistency and all of the other assets mentioned above, these 4 stars are long overdue. read more

I love this place so much! The food and service is amazing. We tried the Vietnamese coffee and banh mi. The banh mi bread was SO good - it's actually fresh baked. We got the Lemongrass Pork and BBQ Pork Egg flavors. Would recommend both but the Lemongrass Pork was my absolute favorite!! The coffee was strong and not too sweet. The service is excellent!! Charming neighborhood restaurant run by a wonderful couple who work their butts off to serve you. Can't say enough great things about Raymond and Judy from Castro Tarts. I used to come in every morning to get a blueberry muffin. Raymond noticed the trend and started timing the oven so that the muffin that I always ordered would be warm when I arrived. I came here for the first time on Tursday 1/25/2024. This is very tiny resturant . The employees are sweet and friendly . They hava boty inside and ourside siiting area. I ordered their house special . The lady behind the counter chsrged me on her own for tips which I didnt apprecite. The food was not to my expectation . A Dolores Park picnic requires picnic food, so we called ahead to order some bahn mi sandwiches and fresh roles from Castro Tarts. They quickly prepared our order and it was ready as soon as we stopped in to pick it up. Service was friendly and the gentleman at the counter was so kind! It seemed like he knew a lot of the people coming in and I loved the local feel of this small shop. Bahn mi sandwiches are my favorite! The bahn mi sandwiches were good, but they lacked some flavor. They were a little bland in my opinion and required sriracha to spice them up! Same with the fresh rolls. I would get them again, because they definitely satisfied a craving I was having, but I would have liked a little more flavor in the protein options. Stopped by here for a weekend lunch on a sunny day, and the owner was super sweet and friendly and rearranged the tables outside so we could sit in the shade. It's a cute spot serving Vietnamese food and classic breakfast dishes and pastries. We decided to try their Vietnamese food and went for the pho, the lemongrass vermicelli bowl, and the Vietnamese iced coffee. The pho was pretty bland and a little disappointing, but the vermicelli bowl was actually quite the opposite and packed with flavor. It's also not very cheap considering the food and the portions, but overall it is a cute spot if you happen to want to grab a quick bite in the Castro. read more

Chicken was well seasoned and not dry. There was also a lot of vegetables, which I prefer in my bahn mis. Definitely one of the best sandwiches you can get in SF! The spring rolls were less my style. I'm a big fan of banh mi, and NOT a big fan of going to the Tenderloin, to Little Saigon, where the parking is sparse and the crackheads aggressive... so I tend to stick to the Castro area and make do with my local options. Dinosaurs is very tasty... not inexpensive... but runs out of things a lot. The one manager there is gorgeous but tragically prefers women... so unbreak my heart. But I digress. I checked out Church Street Cafe next. Delicious also, cheaper... cash only. Nice little coffee shop scene. This was my third banh mi excursion in the Castro... and maybe overall my favorite. The sub was a little more bread and less meat than the other two places, but the owners couldn't have been any nicer, the crowd was more chill, the coffee was better, and I liked the coziness of the interior. I'm a fan. Though for different reasons, I have to give a three-way tie to the three banh mi shops in the area... so I guess I'm either conflicted, or easygoing, about it. read more

I love the Vietnamese sandwiches at this humble little shop. This is a nice fast and delicious option for us on weekend mornings. The people who run it are super friendly and I love being able to get a thai ice tea fix with my breakfast. They have some yummy croissant breakfast sandwiches as well as some basic breakfast options. I'm not a huge fan of the Pho, but I can be pretty picky about my Pho broth!
