Amazing cafe. Perfect for a coffee and breakfast bagel on the way to Precita park in the morning and great sandwich's for lunch picnics. Lovely location to sit and read a book as well. One of the most child friendly places around in that they actively engage with kids if they want to order for themselves even if it is slower, difficult to understand, or just not on the menu. Had not realized how many paces don't give of child can order vibes until I saw a little kid stammer through an order here without anyone rushing her. Thursday nights have pizza dinner and it is a perfect way to meet the neighborhood. I have found my new go to cafe and work location. (WiFi is more than enough for remote workers) read more

Visited Charlie's Neighborhood Cafe yesterday to grab a latte while waiting for a SF City Guide tour to start and I can't say enough nice things about both the man and the cafe's environment. Within 5 minutes I felt like I'd known Charlie forever. He was so kind and welcoming, engaged me and my wife in conversation and had so many wonderful things to say and recommendations to make about the community and surrounding neighborhoods. During the 45 - 50 minutes that I spent there I was introduced to 6-7 friendly regulars and was made to feel very much at home. I will most definitely visit again soon when I'm in the area and wish every town and community around the country had someone as warm-hearted and kind as Charlie! read more

At the western end of Precita Park, this neighborhood hangout spot has the ideal location - though poor timing has prevented me from becoming more of a regular. That's because I don't live in the 'hood, but the park is near the tail end of an afternoon urban walk I often take from Excelsior. That means the door is often shut by the time I get here since they close at 4PM during the week. I end up walking over to Precita Park Cafe just to get my caffeine fix before they close at 5PM. Sounds like my loss because it looks like they have live music and a bakery pop-up on the weekends. Oh well, I was able to sneak in under the wire on a recent Wednesday and order a satisfying $3.75 medium Cafe au Lait (photo: https://bit.ly/3xCL00U) and threw in a $1 Chocolate Chunk Cookie (photo: https://bit.ly/3naQMlD). It was a tad stale but who am I to complain at that hour? They offer sandwiches, salads, and breakfast bagels if you come at a more reasonable hour. Someday I'll manage to do that. Wonderfully friendly staff, fantastic location, but perhaps the worst coffee in San Francisco. The place feels like a time capsule. Which is a shame, because it could be one of the best cafes in town if they would just put a little paint and polish on the old place, and serve one of myriad varieties of fantastic local coffee that are available. read more

Charlie's cafe is a great neighborhood coffee shop with plenty of items. The large white chocolate mocha was a great value and stayed hot for a long time. Coffee tasted watered down and the bagels tasted stale. I don't get how this place can possibly have such high ratings. The only thing this place has going for itself is that it looks quaint on the inside. There are so many better coffee shops in the city, that the quaint look is surely not enough. The parking situation is awful, so I guess the people that normally come here are the locals. I'm glad they're supporting their local businesses, but I'll take a pass on coming here again. read more

I don't know when the live music happens, but I have not run into it. So far, not even loud cell-phone talkers. Also, coffee prices are below average, considerably cheaper than other local cafes. Love their lox bagel! Really nice and cozy place to get some work done. They have a variety of chips, drinks, sandwiches, and more. Charlie is very nice, but the lady who works in the front isn't very friendly. There is limited street parking around the area. We were so delighted to stumble across this gem. Charlie was so warm and welcoming and made us feel like we were old friends coming in for a visit. He was so attentive to our three-year-old and made her feel so comfortable. We had the Mediterranean Platter and it felt like getting a home cooked meal- it was delicious and clearly made with love. Charlie's is part coffeehouse, part deli and a popular neighborhood hangout spot. Moms come here with their toddlers before and after going to Precita Park. Kids stop by on the way home from school for soda, cake and a shot of sugar. Adults come in for the free secure wi-fi, to send a fax, to use the printer, to use their computers, etc. It's a friendly spot, not pretentious at all and a bit run down looking with mismatched secondhand furniture. Parking is easy, you can enjoy a view of the park, there are power outlets and they have a bathroom - not a bad laptop spot. The hours weren't posted but the sign said they were open later now and to come by for dinner. I stopped by on a Sunday morning and they were closed. The menu consists of organic espresso drinks, smoothies, made to order sandwiches, bagels, pastries, salad and piroshky. Specialty sandwiches include the Reuben, New Yorker, Turkey Club and Veg Burger. You can buy potato chips and drinks to round out your meal. * Tuna melt sandwich ($6.95): It looked nicer than your usual tuna melt, a pretty stack of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and jalapenos topped a fairly plain, mushy tuna salad. The cheddar cheese had started to melt and the thin wheat sandwich bread was nicely toasted. The ingredients were fresh but average in quality. read more

We celebrated a friend's birthday lunch here because it is a quiet, out of the way place in a rich countryside-like setting with old canopy trees everywhere in the Folsom vicinity. We could comfortably hear each other in this cozy, inviting place at 1:30pm on a wintry but sunny Wednesday. I ordered the large whole wheat grilled cheese sandwich, and savored every bite with a thick melted layer of cheddar. Whenever I crave a delicious grilled cheese, THIS place is where I will get one. The Mezze platter was somewhat of a letdown. None of the items quite hit the mark. However, the warm hospitality made up for it. He has rotating art shows in here, and he allows his space to be used for fund-raisers and art show parties. And I mean USE his space. Throwing on a little extra helping of the love for Charlie's, as they continue to wow me with their great food, prices, and service. Playing hooky for the first time in MONTHS yesterday, I decided to skip making myself breakfast at home, and instead took a stroll to Charlie's for an iced coffee and a Sesame Bagel breakfast sando with egg, cheese, and sausage. I then took myself to the park and dog watched and slowly enjoyed my sandwich, which was perfect. The whole morning was peaceful, tranquil, quaint. It was any adjective you could use to associate your morning with not having to walk past the morning drinkers of the Mission, shuffle around all the people on BART, breathe in the second hand smoke of smokers, read emails, answer phones, and problem solve all morning till you eventually crash into a cup of mediocre coffee from the office kitchen. Okay...I have never ever set foot inside/near this place. However, my co-worker has brought me cinnamon rolls, twice now. OMG. It's not covered in icing, but it has nice sugar crystals all over it, and it has yummy sweet/fruity stuff in between the layers. (Yes, tastes like cinnamon!) That said, if you aren't comfortable being up to your armpits in teens and their younger tag along siblings, leave by 2:30pm. I love Charlie's. As can be seen from some of the existing reviews, you will be disappointed if you expect a snappy Starbucks-type level of efficiency and sterile service. At Charlie's, it'll take you a little longer to get your coffee or breakfast. But that's because Charlie wants to make sure your bagel gets the right level of toasted. He also wants to make sure the neighborhood homeless guy gets his daily free cup of coffee, and that the construction worker who just comes in to heat his lunch, gets it warm enough. The Mediterranean plate is one of my favorite things to get here. It surprises me how many people just get a bagel to go, and miss out on the bohemian magic of Charlie and his friends/customers. read more

Everyone is friendly and relaxed, faces become more familiar over time, and it's commonplace for Charlie to be engaged in lively conversation with his customers. Just today, in fact, he came and sat down with us for sincere getting-to-know-you chit chat. Every time I grab a bite here, I see similar scenes between Charlie and other customers. He really invests in the people of this community and the community itself. I love Charlie's because it is convenient, good, and local. I love going into Charlie's when I need my mid-day refresher (aka iced coffee) and without any nonsense, I have it in-hand in less than a minute. Don't overlook the baked goods! I've had some cookies and a ganache tart there that were pretty impressive. I hear good things about their lunch, but have yet to partake.
