Charlie (right) and me (also a Chuck) taking in the day.

Visited Charlie's Neighborhood Cafe yesterday to grab a latte while waiting for a SF City Guide tour to start and I can't say enough nice things about both the man and the cafe's environment. Within 5 minutes I felt like I'd known Charlie forever. He was so kind and welcoming, engaged me and my wife in conversation and had so many wonderful things to say and recommendations to make about the community and surrounding neighborhoods. During the 45 - 50 minutes that I spent there I was introduced to 6-7 friendly regulars and was made to feel very much at home. I will most definitely visit again soon when I'm in the area and wish every town and community around the country had someone as warm-hearted and kind as Charlie!

At the western end of Precita Park, this neighborhood hangout spot has the ideal location - though poor timing has prevented me from becoming more of a regular. That's because I don't live in the 'hood, but the park is near the tail end of an afternoon urban walk I often take from Excelsior. That means the door is often shut by the time I get here since they close at 4PM during the week. I end up walking over to Precita Park Cafe just to get my caffeine fix before they close at 5PM. Sounds like my loss because it looks like they have live music and a bakery pop-up on the weekends. Oh well, I was able to sneak in under the wire on a recent Wednesday and order a satisfying $3.75 medium Cafe au Lait (photo: https://bit.ly/3xCL00U) and threw in a $1 Chocolate Chunk Cookie (photo: https://bit.ly/3naQMlD). It was a tad stale but who am I to complain at that hour? They offer sandwiches, salads, and breakfast bagels if you come at a more reasonable hour. Someday I'll manage to do that. COFFEE - 4 stars...a smooth brew AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...a bit sparse when I was here SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly and efficient TOTAL - 4 stars...all the fun stuff happens on the weekends, otherwise it's pretty chill RELATED - Exploring Bernal Heights? Charlie's cafe is a great neighborhood coffee shop with plenty of items. The large white chocolate mocha was a great value and stayed hot for a long time. The bacon egg and American cheese on everything bagel was super tasty and just what I needed. No online ordering but you can call ahead.

Just moved to mission and find this neighborhood cafe that feels really cozy away from all the chaos on 24th, owner is super friendly and the lighting is great with a nice view of precita park.

Charlie's cafe is more than just yet another deli. On Friday evenings, it transforms into a neighborhood hub hosting events varying from a cozy concert to an art gallery to social activism events. Charlie himself is a lovely guy whose main concern is to make everyone comfortable and feel welcomed. Good food and coffee is an added plus!

The best place to get your breakfast bagel , fresh brewed coffee and enjoy local culture of Bernal Heights. "Charlie's Cafe" located in the heart of Bernal district with 5 min walking distance to Bernal hill where you can observe panoramic views of the city , close to Precita Park where you can enjoy great weather and your coffee from Charlie's. Bacon, Egg & Cheese bagel is a Must try! Fresh fried eggs and delicious smoked bacon will give you a good start of the day. LOX Bagel is delicious as well - good portion of salmon, cream cheese and you can add extra veggies for your health gut :) Best experience! Highly recommend!

Bad bagels, really expensive. Seems like they were made a few days ago and bagged up. I don't get what all the fuss is about.

Saw a friend post about this place saying it was the best jambon beurre she has had in the states…read moreso I had to try it. I agree it's definitely a top jambon beurre and I also tried the chicken caesar baguette sandwich was also great. The cinnamon bun here was also one of the better ones I have had in a very long time so that was a nice treat. Lots of other great looking pastries, sandwiches, cookies, etc, so will have to come back try some other things. It's a small unassuming place from the outside but easy enough to find. Parking on Cortland I find can be a little difficult at times but usually I can find a spot on one of the side roads fairly easily during the day. WIll definitely be back. Staff were quite friendly as well.

They offer a wonderful variety of both sweet and savory pastries, and they also have lunch items such as made in house pizza ( I definitely will be back to try the pizza!) which looks absolutely delicious! We grabbed a couple different pastries to try, and the pastries were good, but the savory selection was delicious! Banana loaf slice: this was a generous slice that was moist and tasty, but it really missed with the overall flavor profile of banana. Almond croissant: a properly made croissant should be late and buttery and the almond croissant just wasn't. It tasted more like a dinner roll than it did a croissant. There was barely any almond flavor in it, and I would take a pass on this next time. The seasonal Cherry tomato pastry: go now! You want to try this while they are making it. This savory pastry is such a perfect breakfast/brunch pastry. The flavor profile is absolutely phenomenal, and it is mouth watering and delicious. It's filled with different cheeses, and topped with tomatoes. We heated up, and that was the game changer. The cheese was gooey and melty. Mmmm, mmmm, good! The staff is nice and helpful, and they were very welcoming. The case is filled with so many options, there's something for everyone!
