Buffet is good on most items, but very expensive, so it should have been great. Missing some items shown on the menu and not refilling empty trays. The lobster tails were so overcooked, they could have passed for turkey jerkey. For $150+ per person, you expect better. Drinks were more than what showed on the menu (+$3 for Bloody Mary, +$2 for wine) for "holiday pricing" on Mother's Day. Had to ask bus boys twice to find a server before one came. They take away your silverware if you leave them on the plates, but don't bring new ones, so we had to keep taking them from other tables. Valet clearly says $10 and they validated my ticket at the restaurant, but the valet pickup charged $30 and didn't accept the validation, because it was a "holiday". I had to stand in line to pay the valet for 10 minutes and then wait 15 after that for them to get my car. What did I pay $30 for? 5 star service my ass! read more

Decided to have lunch here on a lovely Saturday afternoon! We had to wait about 5-10 minutes to get seated. Our server was Alyssa and she was very nice. I had the mushroom sandwich(vegan) with a side of macaroni and cheese. And husband had the crispy chicken sandwich with a side of coleslaw. For dessert we had the caramel cheesecake creme brulee. Everything was delicious and even though it looked like it wouldn't fill you up, it definitely did. We were welcome to the outdoor seating and it was very lovely! Very disappointed. I really wanted to like this place. We are locals and have visited several times for cocktails while my husband plays golf, so we were excited to finally try the Father's Day breakfast buffet. First, I want to say that the view is beautiful, and the golf course itself is well-maintained and enjoyable. Those are definitely the highlights of the property and the reason we kept coming back. My husband and I are foodies and don't mind paying a higher price when the food is fresh, high quality, and worth the experience. Unfortunately, this buffet fell far short of our expectations. For a special occasion like Father's Day, I was surprised there wasn't an omelet station or waffle station. The scrambled eggs that were offered were runny and mushy, and overall the food selection felt limited and underwhelming. The quality simply did not match the price we paid. The service and overall experience left us feeling let down, which is disappointing because we had hoped this would become one of our regular spots. For the amount we spent, we expected much more. Looking back, we would have been better off spending our money at the Royal Sunday Brunch aboard the Queen Mary. Sadly, this experience did not provide the value, quality, or attention to detail we were expecting. Catalina Kitchen in Rancho Palos Verdes, within the Terranea Resort is such a great spot for a family meal or special occasion. You can either self-park or have your car valeted ($10 with restaurant validation). The outdoor seating is perfect for kids - plenty of space and a relaxed vibe - plus you get a gorgeous view of the ocean while you dine. I ordered the Pan-Seared Chilean Sea Bass, which was perfectly cooked and did not smell fishy at all (like a previous Yelper had mentioned.) The fish was fresh, and a nice portion for the price ($38). I also had a cocktail, the Caliente Kiss, which was good for a nice summer night. My daughter had the Kid's Mozzarella Cheese Flatbread, which she liked. I just wish the kid's plates would offer a veggie or fruit on the side. I appreciate it when restaurants actually have a kid's meal that offer healthier options. They also do an amazing job celebrating birthdays. We were surprised with a beautiful complimentary birthday dessert board that really made the experience extra special. It was large enough for our table of 8. The board consisted of small pieces of the Caramel Cheesecake Crème Brûlée and a full-size Chocolate Lava Cake with icecream on top. There were also fruits and flowers decorating the board. Probably the best complimentary birthday board I've ever seen/had. Gorgeous ocean views from the patio. Service by Chanel and Mario was perfection. We enjoyed the ham, cheddar and spinach omelet with crispy red bliss potatoes. One of the worst restaurant experiences we've had in a while, especially with what would be expected at a "luxury resort." We had a reservation, and also a dining credit for "dinner for two" though couldn't get a clear answer from anyone working there what that covered, or even from the front desk. When we called, they said it supposedly covered 1 appetizer, 1 dessert, 2 entrees -- but we ended up being charged for at least one of those things (which we wouldn't have ordered if we knew it was not covered.) The Service when we were greeted and brought to our table was great, but our waiter was not. He was very frantic, running around (despite there not being that many tables full), and mumbling, barely staying at our table long enough to get our orders or anything. It also took forever-- our reservation was for 7:30 and we didn't get back to the room until 9:30 or 10, and all we did was wait for food and eat, we didn't linger. To start, got the Garden Party Mocktail, which was just a thyme-berry-soda, not worth the price, and not very sweet, had to add splenda to it. Fried Devilled Eggs - Didn't taste like an Egg, the frying of the white made it kind of like tofu or a not-cheesey mozzarella stick, the yolk on top lacked flavor -- overall was very bland and not a great combo. Also $13 for 2 eggs is steep. The Entrees. The Chicken was incredibly bland. Like, no seasoning at all. I never salt/pepper my food but had to here because it seemed like they just threw chicken into an oven and called it a day. The texture was also rubbery/a bit overdone. Horrible tasting and there was no flavor or elevation to it, just a hunk of meat. The fries were also soggy and bland since they were dumped on the plate with the meat juices. The Filet was cooked well, very tender BUT also lacked any flavor. Just meat. The mac and cheese... was just mac. Actually, it was just pasta. It barely had butter (unsalted) and a little powdered parmesan on top. Crazy for the prices, even with it being partially covered, the bill still ended up being $55 (from ~$140) for horrible food and service, and being told that it was a complimentary dinner. Service here was great. This is the restaurant located inside of the Terranea resort, overlooking their pool area and the ocean. There is a nice variety on the menu and considering the location the prices are fair. I've gotten better service at a Holiday Inn. Especially for a nearly $1000 bill. Came here for Mother's Day. Our waiter was missing most of the time, he forgot to get my mom a water, and when we finally got it, we were halfway done eating and it was warm, no ice. To add insult to 18%-gratuity-injury, they refused to validate, claiming they hadn't been validating the whole day, despite admitting to me they had just taken away the stickers that they had to that point been validating with, a placard at valet advertising said validation, and my MIA waiter telling me I could validate at the front desk. Went there last sunday to hike and hang out by the cove. A stay-cation without staying the night. Went and walked the gorgeous grounds of hotel. It is similar to an older Spanish hotel and you feel like you are truly outside of LA. Similar to a 4 seasons Biltmore in Santa Barbara vibe. Sushi place was packed; it was almost 5 so we got in here quickly and sat outside. Had a newer server named Chloe- service and food were on point. Very happy with my swordfish sandwich; my guy had the burger with Mac and Cheese. Very reasonable. Also had a nice Grey goose and tonic. Total bill was about $80. Cannot beat the view and service. There was no view and no decor outside. There was no parking available and valet took a significant long time to retrieve our vehicle. Why on earth would you DISCONTINUE the Friday night seafood buffet? It's always crowded during prime time hours showing how popular it is. Just because it doesn't make enough profit? So raise it by $5 or something. It's been an institution for Catalina Kitchen and Terranea. If there are dishes that aren't being eaten, remove them. But the seafood, sushi, and steaks (including the ribeye and skirt steaks) were a highlight of many people's weeks in addition to the weekend guests. Even last night, many of the staff I spoke to thought it was a loss because the guests and staff all loved the weekly experience. It's easier for the waitstaff because they don't need to constantly take orders and bring them from the kitchen. They just need to get drinks and take dishes. They should be used to help bring food to the buffet lines and keep plates and sauces stocked. Makes things much easier. The quality of the food was always 5 star as long as the chef cooked the meats correctly and kept the sushi and cold bar stocked. I know very few people can eat $85 of food so I'm not sure why you aren't making the profit you expect. I know there are always complaints of chef staff not keeping up but that just means change the process, not discontinue the event! I know hundreds of people of not thousands hope you change your mind and keep this institution continuing. It is such a loss and coming to get just an a la carte steak at the Kitchen is such a boring affair compared to the lavish affair you present every week. Maybe if you really need to save on costs, do it every other week instead of every week? read more

For seafood lovers, the Friday Seafood Extravaganza at catalina kitchen at Terrenea may be a good way to spend an evening eating all the sushi, crab legs, scallops, and poke you'd like. Came here with my family during a staycation and made a reservation in advance. It's $85 per person and you can charge it to the room if you're staying at the property or with credit card. Indoor and outdoor dining available. There is a kid's buffet area with wings, pizza, mac & cheese, etc. as well as meat options (ie prime rib, tomahawk, Mary's chicken). The dessert bar was well stocked and they have ice creams as well. The mango sorbet was the surprise hit of the night and my family went back for seconds (and thirds). It is good for large parties as well as for special occasions, though many people were dressed casually. Overall, this was a spot to go to if you're hungry and looking to eat at a fancier buffet. This is such a delightful restaurant-- with well positioned umbrellas - it's lovely to sit outside on the patio watching the people at the pool, with the ocean in the distance. Exceptional service; our server (Angelique-- I think was her name), the dynamic young man who refilled our water (Paris), and even the bus staff. The mezcal moment was gorgeous to look at and equally delicious to drink! Loved the flower embed in the beautiful big ice cube. The fig/prosciutto flatbread with goat cheese was absolutely divine. Just the right amount of sweet to counterbalance the salt forward prosciutto and then the goat cheese and arugula added a really well harmonized textural element. The fries - oh the fries. We all know that there's an art to making good sweet potato fries- but when you perfect it in waffle fries that is just a whole other level of respect from me! These were just perfect. Crisp, hot, with flaky salt which was obviously added immediately as they came out of the oil added a nice counterpoint to the sweetness of the sweet potato. Yum!!!! Bruschetta-- decent-- i'm not a fan of tomato jam but my friend wanted to order these - I could have done without. I did appreciate the well toasted, not-soggy, not-tooth crackingly crisp bread. Finally the Brussels. If there are brussels sprouts on the menu, I can't NOT order them. Sadly, these fell short of my expectations. Came here with some friends for a Sunday buffet. 4 adults and 4 kids. It's pretty family friendly, which is fantastic. They had booster seats and high chairs, but don't think they offered coloring or crayons to the little ones. Don't love that buffet is their only option, but they did have a variety of foods! So great when you have kiddos too. The ones that stood out: bacon, pancake/french toast, fresh fruit, customized omelette, etc. Food was good quality and fresh, but was it worth around 65 dollars or so per person? Uh no. That said, the service was decent. Our waiter was Augusto, and he was friendly enough but didn't really make conversation and was probably was overwhelmed and overworked. Everyone in the buffet area were friendly and had a smile on their face, so that was helpful! If you go in the morning, you won't get the gorgeous view because of the fog, but it's all so beautiful. Parking: you can get free parking if you don't mind a 5 minute walk or so and get there around 10/10:30 AM. When we got back to the parking lot around 12 or 12:30, it was PACKED and cars were circling around, looking for parking. I think valet was a steep price. All in all, good food, decent service, and gorgeous location. Price is steep but I would say it's worth it once in a while. From a food perspective, I prefer Bashi, but don't think it was open for brunch :). read more

Snow crab legs was lightly seasoning and could be eaten as prepared or with cocktail sauce. Tuna poke was well seasoned and melted in your mouth. Catalina Kitchen should take better pride in food and service. It was Brunch at $150.00 a person for Christmas day was not worth it. The seafood had a strong fishy smell, the Prime rib was dry, the Warm food was not so warm, service was below average, to say the least. Have been here for the brunch buffet a few times and was never disappointed, and finally tried the evening seafood buffet on Friday. Again, not disappointed. The selection is excellent. As you walk in, there is a charcuterie table with dried fruits, cheeses, and cured meats, including aged Iberian ham. There's also a salad bar with many options to build your own in addition to a few premade salads (the roasted beet kale salad stood out as one of my faves). There are lots of seafood options including shrimp cocktail, raw oysters, snow crab, Jonah crab claws, poke, sushi, baked salmon, chowder, creole seafood boil, and ceviche. If you're not into seafood, there's a carving station with steak, prime rib, lamb, sausage, and pork loin; a variety of vegetables, and Asian selections and empanadas. There's plenty for kids as well including sliders, fruit , chicken tenders and pizza. There are a lot of desserts to choose from but I wasn't especially impressed with any of the ones I tried. The cakes were a little dry and just didn't live up to level of everything else. I didn't try the gelato but my husband enjoyed it. They have an extensive wine menu and inspired cocktails. The service is outstanding. Parking is valet only and costs $10 if you validate at the restaurant. Reservations are available through Opentable.
