We highly recommend this as an appetizer! My husband ordered the half rack of barbecue ribs. He said they were good. The portions are really big. I tried his corn which was really good but a little spicy. I had the French Dip sandwich which was juicy and full of flavor. We finished off with the Carmel Cheesecake Creme Brûlée. Extremely disappointing birthday experience at Catalina Kitchen I made a reservation at Catalina Kitchen at Terranea specifically to celebrate my mom's birthday. When making the reservation, I clearly indicated that we were celebrating a birthday. When we checked in, I mentioned it again to the staff. After we finished our meal, I even got up and went to the concierge personally and reminded him that it was my mom's birthday and asked if they could bring out a nice dessert with candles to make the occasion special. I went back to the table and waited, expecting the dessert to come out. Instead, we were handed the bill by another server, making us feel like we were being rushed out. At that point, I followed her and explained that we had told multiple people that we were celebrating a special occasion and that nothing had been done. The entire experience was extremely disappointing and unprofessional. What should have been a special birthday celebration was completely ruined by the lack of communication and attention to such a simple request. After I told them not to bother anymore, they insisted on bringing something out anyway -- and what finally arrived was a frozen, overly sugary, cheap-tasting cupcake with a candle on top. At that point, it felt more like an afterthought than a genuine attempt to celebrate my mom's birthday. For a restaurant at a resort like Terranea, and especially considering how much we spent, I expected a much higher level of service and attention. We are locals who live in Palos Verdes and have been to Terranea and Catalina Kitchen multiple times before. Unfortunately, after this experience, I have no desire to return. Service was slow and our water cups were filled only once after we requested it. Food was meh. Cantina burger was good. 4 stars but the ahi tuna salad, the pizza and the beer dip were average if not worse. 2 starts maybe? My wife had the chicken Sand that came without out any of the fixings. Terranea has been on my must-visit list for years, so I (finally) made the drive from Weho to Palos Verdes on a TGIF #daycation - and the drive was worth it: The resort & grounds are very nice, with stunning views of the ocean, dramatic cliffs, shoreline, & more. Rather than dine at the pricier Mar'sel restaurant or the casual Nelson's, I opted to dine at the casual Catalina Kitchen patio overlooking the main pool. Food was delicious at generous portions & reasonable prices - I had the Superfood Salad with mixed endive, greens, beets, cashews, Goji berries in a zesty vinaigrette, plus French dip sandwich - delicious with shaved rib eye steak w/ au jus and fries - I could barely finish it. + i had a non-alky beer to wash it all down. Service was friendly & attentive. Afterwards, I took time to stroll around the property/grounds, taking in the breakingtaking views. Valet parking available for $15 with valididation - not bad for resort parking price point. Waited over 15 minutes to get served. Food arrived before the drinks and had to ask the busboy to get our server. When the food finally arrived my friends French fries were cold. After waiting 5 minutes I eventually had to ask the bus boy to send our server over. It was not busy so I still don't understand why service was so slow. Also I had a tiny tiny glass of wine. Looks like maybe 3 ounces for $20. I had the California salad with salmon. The salad was very good however the salmon was a little over cooked. Ok, so I'm going to be brutally honest here, their breakfast brunch buffet isn't too impressive; however! Their À la Carte menu's pretty amazing! I loved the chocolate vegan parfait with the chia seed puddings, their potatoes are sooooo goood, my son was going at it with their breakfast burritos, pancakes, etc. My husband loved their smoothies, he would be getting a smoothie from here with every meal! So, if I could give it a 3.5, I would. This restaurant is surprisingly hard to find....at least the first time (I didn't realize how MASSIVE this resort is). Once located though, I was disappointed on several fronts. First, there is no view of the ocean cause this restaurant's outdoor area is next the pool area so not only do you not get a view but you have to listen to kids at the pool. Next is the service. There seems to be plenty of waiters around yet for some reason the service is slow. Lastly, when we showed up on a Sunday for brunch, they told me that only the buffet was available, no ala carte. Interesting. Ok so I went to the omelet station and the cook behind the counter was friendly enough but was working 2-3 skillets/customers at once. As you can imagine, my omelet tasted overcooked. On a positive note, it's a very beautiful restaurant and is very clean. Decided to have lunch here on a lovely Saturday afternoon! We had to wait about 5-10 minutes to get seated. Our server was Alyssa and she was very nice. I had the mushroom sandwich(vegan) with a side of macaroni and cheese. And husband had the crispy chicken sandwich with a side of coleslaw. For dessert we had the caramel cheesecake creme brulee. Everything was delicious and even though it looked like it wouldn't fill you up, it definitely did. We were welcome to the outdoor seating and it was very lovely! This is my second time eating at Catalina Kitchen and it did not disappoint both times. First time was lunch a month ago. A few of us went to do a walk through of the meeting rooms where we were going to hold our meeting at work. We ordered: Tuna Tartare and Crispy Shrimp Taquitos to share. For our entrees, I ordered Pan-Seared Stripe Bass. All our order were flavorful and cooked to perfection. Fast forward to this past weekend during our stay at Terreanea, my partner and I made a reservation for 9am for their brunch buffet. At first, I was hesitant to go since its $95 per person and I dont eat a lot. They have a vast selection of different food even have seafood and sushi. We liked everything we had. I would say its worth the price. I would definitely go back here in a heartbeat. Service is great too. Catalina Kitchen in Rancho Palos Verdes, within the Terranea Resort is such a great spot for a family meal or special occasion. You can either self-park or have your car valeted ($10 with restaurant validation). The outdoor seating is perfect for kids - plenty of space and a relaxed vibe - plus you get a gorgeous view of the ocean while you dine. I ordered the Pan-Seared Chilean Sea Bass, which was perfectly cooked and did not smell fishy at all (like a previous Yelper had mentioned.) The fish was fresh, and a nice portion for the price ($38). I also had a cocktail, the Caliente Kiss, which was good for a nice summer night. My daughter had the Kid's Mozzarella Cheese Flatbread, which she liked. I just wish the kid's plates would offer a veggie or fruit on the side. I appreciate it when restaurants actually have a kid's meal that offer healthier options. They also do an amazing job celebrating birthdays. We were surprised with a beautiful complimentary birthday dessert board that really made the experience extra special. It was large enough for our table of 8. The board consisted of small pieces of the Caramel Cheesecake Crème Brûlée and a full-size Chocolate Lava Cake with icecream on top. There were also fruits and flowers decorating the board. Probably the best complimentary birthday board I've ever seen/had. One of the worst restaurant experiences we've had in a while, especially with what would be expected at a "luxury resort." We had a reservation, and also a dining credit for "dinner for two" though couldn't get a clear answer from anyone working there what that covered, or even from the front desk. When we called, they said it supposedly covered 1 appetizer, 1 dessert, 2 entrees -- but we ended up being charged for at least one of those things (which we wouldn't have ordered if we knew it was not covered.) The Service when we were greeted and brought to our table was great, but our waiter was not. He was very frantic, running around (despite there not being that many tables full), and mumbling, barely staying at our table long enough to get our orders or anything. It also took forever-- our reservation was for 7:30 and we didn't get back to the room until 9:30 or 10, and all we did was wait for food and eat, we didn't linger. To start, got the Garden Party Mocktail, which was just a thyme-berry-soda, not worth the price, and not very sweet, had to add splenda to it. Fried Devilled Eggs - Didn't taste like an Egg, the frying of the white made it kind of like tofu or a not-cheesey mozzarella stick, the yolk on top lacked flavor -- overall was very bland and not a great combo. Also $13 for 2 eggs is steep. The Entrees. The Chicken was incredibly bland. Like, no seasoning at all. I never salt/pepper my food but had to here because it seemed like they just threw chicken into an oven and called it a day. The texture was also rubbery/a bit overdone. Horrible tasting and there was no flavor or elevation to it, just a hunk of meat. The fries were also soggy and bland since they were dumped on the plate with the meat juices. The Filet was cooked well, very tender BUT also lacked any flavor. Just meat. The mac and cheese... was just mac. Actually, it was just pasta. It barely had butter (unsalted) and a little powdered parmesan on top. Crazy for the prices, even with it being partially covered, the bill still ended up being $55 (from ~$140) for horrible food and service, and being told that it was a complimentary dinner. The one star is for the Creme Brulee Caramel Cheesecake, which was very tasty. read more

They take away your silverware if you leave them on the plates, but don't bring new ones, so we had to keep taking them from other tables. Valet clearly says $10 and they validated my ticket at the restaurant, but the valet pickup charged $30 and didn't accept the validation, because it was a "holiday". Went there last sunday to hike and hang out by the cove. A stay-cation without staying the night. Went and walked the gorgeous grounds of hotel. It is similar to an older Spanish hotel and you feel like you are truly outside of LA. Similar to a 4 seasons Biltmore in Santa Barbara vibe. Sushi place was packed; it was almost 5 so we got in here quickly and sat outside. Had a newer server named Chloe- service and food were on point. Very happy with my swordfish sandwich; my guy had the burger with Mac and Cheese. Very reasonable. Also had a nice Grey goose and tonic. Total bill was about $80. Cannot beat the view and service. Would recommend. Lobby bar upstairs is our next venture. read more

We are locals and have visited several times for cocktails while my husband plays golf, so we were excited to finally try the Father's Day breakfast buffet. First, I want to say that the view is beautiful, and the golf course itself is well-maintained and enjoyable. Those are definitely the highlights of the property and the reason we kept coming back. My husband and I are foodies and don't mind paying a higher price when the food is fresh, high quality, and worth the experience. Unfortunately, this buffet fell far short of our expectations. For a special occasion like Father's Day, I was surprised there wasn't an omelet station or waffle station. The scrambled eggs that were offered were runny and mushy, and overall the food selection felt limited and underwhelming. The quality simply did not match the price we paid. The service and overall experience left us feeling let down, which is disappointing because we had hoped this would become one of our regular spots. For the amount we spent, we expected much more. Looking back, we would have been better off spending our money at the Royal Sunday Brunch aboard the Queen Mary. Sadly, this experience did not provide the value, quality, or attention to detail we were expecting. While we'll likely continue to enjoy the beautiful views and golf course, we would not return for the buffet. read more

I've gotten better service at a Holiday Inn. Especially for a nearly $1000 bill. Came here for Mother's Day. Food quality was ok, but buffet was picked over the whole time, meats were charbroiled, offerings missing 4-5 items the whole time, and gnats all over one section. Our waiter was missing most of the time, he forgot to get my mom a water, and when we finally got it, we were halfway done eating and it was warm, no ice. To add insult to 18%-gratuity-injury, they refused to validate, claiming they hadn't been validating the whole day, despite admitting to me they had just taken away the stickers that they had to that point been validating with, a placard at valet advertising said validation, and my MIA waiter telling me I could validate at the front desk. The ambiance was lovely. But I credit that to the Pacific ocean--not catalina* kitchen. read more

Came here with my family during a staycation and made a reservation in advance. It's $85 per person and you can charge it to the room if you're staying at the property or with credit card. Indoor and outdoor dining available. There is a kid's buffet area with wings, pizza, mac & cheese, etc. as well as meat options (ie prime rib, tomahawk, Mary's chicken). The dessert bar was well stocked and they have ice creams as well. The mango sorbet was the surprise hit of the night and my family went back for seconds (and thirds). It is good for large parties as well as for special occasions, though many people were dressed casually. Overall, this was a spot to go to if you're hungry and looking to eat at a fancier buffet. This is such a delightful restaurant-- with well positioned umbrellas - it's lovely to sit outside on the patio watching the people at the pool, with the ocean in the distance. Exceptional service; our server (Angelique-- I think was her name), the dynamic young man who refilled our water (Paris), and even the bus staff. The mezcal moment was gorgeous to look at and equally delicious to drink! Loved the flower embed in the beautiful big ice cube. The fig/prosciutto flatbread with goat cheese was absolutely divine. Just the right amount of sweet to counterbalance the salt forward prosciutto and then the goat cheese and arugula added a really well harmonized textural element. The fries - oh the fries. We all know that there's an art to making good sweet potato fries- but when you perfect it in waffle fries that is just a whole other level of respect from me! These were just perfect. Crisp, hot, with flaky salt which was obviously added immediately as they came out of the oil added a nice counterpoint to the sweetness of the sweet potato. Yum!!!! Bruschetta-- decent-- i'm not a fan of tomato jam but my friend wanted to order these - I could have done without. I did appreciate the well toasted, not-soggy, not-tooth crackingly crisp bread. Finally the Brussels. If there are brussels sprouts on the menu, I can't NOT order them. Sadly, these fell short of my expectations.
