I hadn't been to Swan Thai in a while, but I was in the area on a lazy Sunday and decided to give it another try. I ordered my usual soup, noodles, and lettuce wraps. Everything was ordered EXTRA SPICY -- Level 5 through the online menu. When we got home, we took our first bites and immediately thought, "Wait... did they give us someone else's food?" No spice. Zero. Barely any flavor at all. This wasn't Level 5. This wasn't Level 1. This was apparently Level 0: Thai food for people who are afraid of black pepper. So we called the restaurant. The woman who answered told us, incredibly confidently, that they don't make their food spicy. Excuse me... what? This is a Thai restaurant. We have ordered spicy food from Swan Thai before. And, more importantly, your own online ordering system literally has spice levels, including Level 5. So either the online menu is completely meaningless, or someone in the restaurant has decided that customers no longer deserve to know what they're ordering. We asked to speak with a manager. Apparently, there was no manager. We asked for the owner. We were told the owners "come and go as they want." So who exactly is running this place? Is it just a group project where everyone shows up, does whatever they want, and hopes nobody asks questions? The food was so bland and disappointing that we barely ate it. And honestly, after the ridiculous phone conversation, we didn't even have much interest in finishing it. What makes this worse is that I used to like Swan Thai. That's why this was so disappointing. Restaurants can have an off day, but when the food is wrong, the online menu contradicts what an employee tells you, and there apparently isn't even a manager available to address the issue, that's more than an off day. Swan Thai, you used to be much better. Somewhere along the way, the food lost its flavor and the customer service apparently lost its direction. Went here on a Thursday night with my family and doggy and it was amazing! They are fully outdoor with a beautiful view of the ocean and there are heating lamps since it does get cold at night. There is lots of parking as it is located in a shopping mall. As for the service, it was wonderful; very attentive and friendly. Lastly the food was very tasty and good. The service here is always top notch, they really take care of you from to start finish and are so warm and kind to their guests. The food here is incredible, from the drinks to the starters as well as the entrees. Also, the coconut smoothies are to DIE FOR!!! You have to try them when you go. Same goes for the Tom Kha soup (with chicken), which is soooooo good. Lastly, I have to mention the ambiance of this place is simply superb. For $16.99, we got a delicious soup, salad as well as an ample amount of entree. The wife and I ordered the Red Curry with chicken with white rice and it was SOOOO good. Our friends ordered the Red Curry with Shrimp and the Terriyaki Salmon and loved them. The Red Curry is so good, even decadent but not too sweet and it has a good bite of spice. I've been coming to Swan Thai for some time now and always enjoy their food and service. They're located in Golden Cove plaza and there's plenty of parking and stellar views of the ocean. Been here a couple of times when I'm in the area and I can say this is def a really good date spot but def come before sunset as the ocean view is marvelous (I totally forgot to take a pic). There's ample amount of parking as it's in a huge shopping plaza. It's also easy to find this plaza as it's at the end of Hawthorne. I can safely say the food here is a solid 3. Everything we've tried is decent. We've tried the coconut soup, pho, spicy beef salad, spicy beef basil, and crab fried rice. The fried crab rice came with a piece of soft shell crab on top which was quit tasty. The hot Ginger tea is pretty good here. We're def here more for the scenery then food as it is amazing. The relaxing outdoor theme with the ocean view. It draws us here every time we are near. A solid 5 for the ambient hence the 4 star rating. Only good things here at SwanThai. Made a reservation ahead of time. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the hostess Elyse who was very polite, courteous and friendly. We were seated within a few minutes at an "ocean view/beachside" table that had phenomenal views while the sun was setting. Our waiter Cameron promptly greeted us after being seated at our table, and was helpful in recommending certain drinks and appetizers. He was great! We had a second waitress Chloe who brought out some of our dishes as well once the food was ready who was also very courteous. Great job Swan Thai management for having attentive and courteous staff members! As for the food. For starters, we ordered the cream cheese puffs and crispy spring rolls. Both were delicious! We ordered takeout while staying at Terranea couple days ago. The ordering process was easy as we walked up to their counter set up near their entrance. We ordered crab fried rice and panang chicken curry. The curry was tasty and we had enough for a small lunch the next day. The crab fried rice was ok. I got the thai coffee without boba, and it was exactly what you'd expect from a thai-style coffee. I liked that it was strong. My family and I have come here multiple times and Ive consistently noticed that this place is mostly about the view. The food was pricey, mediocre, and came in smaller portions. The pad see ewe was WAY on the sweeter side compared to other thai places, the crispy pork & chinese broccoli was dry and chewy, and the rest of the food was really nothing special. I got pad see ewe and Thai iced tea. The portion was small but I'm normally fine with that. But my noodles were way too sweet. I've never had pad see ewe taste so much like sugar and not at all like soy sauce. It made the Thai iced tea not taste sweet. Maybe it was just an off day. My friends all seemed to enjoy their food so it might be my dish was the one off. Otherwise, our service was friendly and fast and I had a good time. The shrimp fried rice is one i will be ordering again. Upon entering the restaurant, we were a bit confused on where the entrance was located, but fortunately a lovely lady standing outside directed us. We were asked if we made a reservation, and even though we didn't, we were immediately seated. There was such a breathtaking view upon looking at the ocean, and the vibes were peaceful and calming.
